Rufus Johnson
Services for Rufus Johnson, 83, of Oakwood, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Andrew Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Billy Joe Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.
Mr. Johnson died Wednesday at Palestine Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 8, 1919, in Leon County to Savannah Thomas and Sheffield Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was retired from Palestine Contractors.
He attended St. Paul Shiloh public school.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his wife, Lurlene Johnson; daughter, Rubye Johnson; son, Rosoe Johnson; and grandson, Wayman Lane.
He is survived by daughter, Margie Johnson of Oakwood; sons, Fred Johnson and Larry Johnson; stepsons, Wayman Lane of Houston, Edward Joe Leonard of Dallas and Bobby Gleason of Mesquite; stepfather, Ed Cawthorne; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Calvin Jackson, Leo Walker, Milton Campbell, Willie J. Allen, Charles Carter, Demond Watkins, Leonard Randle and Claude Carter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Johnson, Fred Johnson, Derilyn Johnson, Wayman Lane, Bobby Gleason Edward and Edward Leonard.
Alice G. Shepherd
Services for Alice G. Shepherd, 80, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. A. Bennett Stubblefield officiating. Burial will follow in the Shepherd Family Cemetery in Grapeland under the direction of Emanuel Funeral Home.
Mrs. Shepherd died early Wednesday morning at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.
She was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Grapeland, to W.L. and Mary Ann Warfield Shepherd.
Mrs. Shepherd attended Grapeland public school. She attended Mary Allen College and Houston-Tillison College. She graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a degree in home economics. She taught at W.R. Banks and Grapeland High School in the Grapeland ISD for 37 years before retiring.
She was a substitute teacher for the Windham School District. She was a member of Greater New Hope Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher and church treasurer.
Mrs. Shepherd was preceded in death by siblings, Joe Houston, Rosetta Dickson, Jennie Wagner, Eva Daily, Mary Alice Shepherd and Jesse Burnett Shepherd Sr.
She is survived by son, Freddie Gerald Shepherd; sister, Jessie Mae Wise of Ocala, Fla.; brothers, Samuel P. Shepherd of Houston and the Rev. T.J. Shepherd of Crockett; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Luella English Madison
Services for Luella English Madison, 95, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lone Star Baptist Church in Trinity. Burial will follow at Trinity Cemetery under the direction of Emanuel Funeral Home, Crockett.
Mrs. Madison died Thursday at East Texas Medical Center in Trinity.
She was born July 28, 1907, to Abe and Laura Dean English.
Mrs. Madison was a member of Lone Star Baptist Church. She was owner of Odds & Ends Grocery Store for more than 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Madison; and five brothers, Manous English Sr., Abe English Jr., Varee English, George English and Dennis English.
Mrs. Madison is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Raymond Jeffcoat

Elsie Perkins

Isham Alexander
Services for Isham Alexander, 96, of Tucker, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tucker Church of God in Christ with the Rev. Norris Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.
Mr. Alexander died Monday at Palestine HealthCare Center.
He was born Nov. 15, 1905 in Mount Zion Community.
Mr. Alexander attended Mount Zion Community schools and was a lifelong resident of Anderson County. He was an employee of the Missouri Railroad, a farmer and a member of Tucker Church of God in Christ Church. He taught Sunday school and was superintendent of Sunday school and a deacon of the church.
He is survived by his wife, Maydelle “Aunt Pal” Alexander of Tucker; son, Nebemiah Alexander of Houston; stepson, Joseph Ector of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter, Ola C. Wade of Houston; brother, Johnny Alexander of Hitchcock; sister, Asalene Kirby of Houston; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Othello Alexander, Anthony Foster, Robert Samuel, Garylen Crawford, John A. Smith Jr. and Rogers L. Samuel III.
Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Page, the Rev. Roy C. Davis, Nathan Yong and John A. Smith Sr.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Delphinia Mur Spurlock
Services of Delphinia Mur Spurlock, 88, of Palestine will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Temple Church of God in Christ with Preston White, the Rev. Dewayne Simpson and Tommy Crosby officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.
Mrs. Spurlock died Tuesday after a brief illness.
She was born March 5, 1914 in Anderson County.
Mrs. Spurlock was employed at the Hamburger Bar for 30 years. She was reared in Palestine and educated in Palestine schools. She was a member of Grace Temple Church of God in Christ.
She is survived by sons, T.J. Spurlock Jr., V.C. Spurlock, Willie J. Spurlock, and Edward Spurlock; daughters, Gloria Dial of Los Angeles, Alama Watson and Nancy Brisy, both of Palestine, and Marian Spurlock of Tyler; 42 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Alton Carr, Ray Simmons, Robert Dawson, Morrell Barrett, Anthony Hodges and Jimmy Mims.
Cleo Fain

Juan Jose Ramirez
Services for Juan Jose Ramirez, 36, will be Monday in San Antonio De Padua Church in San Migual de Allende, GTO, Mexico. Burial will follow in Garden of Destine Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Mr. Ramirez died Monday at Palestine Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 28, 1965 in Mexico to Jose Ramirez Hernandez and Marcelina Chavez Ramirez.
Mr. Ramirez lived in Palestine for 17 years. He worked at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center No. 6005.
He is survived by his parents of Mexico; brothers, Jose Chavez and Armando Ramirez, both of Palestine, and Acencion Ramirez of Mexico; sisters, Maria Elena Ramirez of Fort Worth, Maria del Carmen Ramirez, Gloria Ramirez and Angelica Ramirez, all of Mexico.
Viewing and family visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Edith Avant Calcote
Services for Edith Avant Calcote, 101, of Athens, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bailey & Foster Chapel with Dr. Tom Rousseau officiating. Burial will be in Tennessee Colony Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Calcote died Thursday at Park Highlands Nursing Center in Athens where she had lived the past eight years.
She was born Oct. 26, 1900 in Tennessee Colony to Marcus Eugene Avant and Mary Tennie Campbell.
Mrs. Calcote was a homemaker. She was a member of First Christian Church of Palestine. She was a life member and past Worthy Matron of the Tennessee Colony Chapter 102 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Riley Calcote, in 1954; daughter, Rosemary Kendrick; son, Charles Richard Calcote; grandson, Michael Kendrick; sister, Alma Avant Wofford; brothers, Homer, Sam, Frank, Albert, Milton, Bruce and Shelton Avant.
She is survived by a daughter, Jeanne Helms of Houston; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bruce Calcote, A.B. Calcote, Howard Calcote, Ryan Cummings, Todd Dugan and Alec Wofford.

Robert David “Bob” Honeycutt
Services for Robert David “Bob” Honeycutt, 61, of Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Roselawn Park with Dr. Barry Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Park under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mr. Honeycutt died Friday at his home.
He was born June 26, 1941, in Anderson County to Wren David Honeycutt and Faylene Griffith Honeycutt.
Mr. Honeycutt was a Baptist and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Before retiring, he had worked as a sheetmetal man in aircraft production for Ling Tempco Vought in Arlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Honeycutt is survived by brother, Kenneth Ray Honeycutt of Palestine.

Sallie Mae Barnett

Mrs. Barnett died Thursday at Palestine Health Care.
She was born Jan. 30, 1910, in Elkhart to Elbert Eugene Owens and Addie Clark Owens.
Mrs. Barnett was a homemaker and a member of the Oakwood Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wade W. Barnett; sisters, Willie Dell Owens, Mary Lou Holloway and Etta Wright.
Mrs. Barnett is survived by daughters, Maxine Alexander of Tyler and Lela Coates of Oakwood; sons, James Barnett of Arp and Jack Barnett of Sachse; 10 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Eddie Vera Johnson Allen
Services for Eddie Vera Johnson Allen, 80, of Buffalo will be at 11 a.m. today at First St. Holland Baptist Church of Buffalo with the Revs. Joseph Brown and C.L. Boulden presiding. Burial will follow at Sandhill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home of Buffalo.
She died Wednesday at East Texas Medical Center of Tyler.
Ms. Allen was born on Dec. 17, 1921, to Ranson Johnson and Eddie Glover and Iola and M.H. Green.
Ms. Allen received her education at Buffalo public schools. She was a retired cook and a member of First St. Holland Baptist Church of Buffalo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Allen; daughter, Ola Adkins; sisters, Caroline Green Edwards and Luberta Stewart; and brothers, Solomon Johnson, Frank Johnson and Robert Nealy.
Ms. Allen is survived by daughters, Vera Randle and Patsy Allen Randle, both of Buffalo, Dolores Smith of Fort Worth and Paulette Allen of Dallas; sons, Eddie Allen of Midwest City, Okla., Jack Allen of Houston, Dennis Allen of Anaheim, Calif., Jay Vance Allen of Missouri City, and Bennie Allen of Garland; 32 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Samuel Hayes, Larry Tatum, Don Hayes, Jim Scott, Fragil Anthony and Gary Vargas.
Honorary pallbearers are W.B. Randall, Fred Randall, Floyd Manigo, Nicholas Smith and Reginald Amos.
Owen Dean Finley
Services for Owen Dean Finley, 78, of Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. today at Eastland Cemetery in Eastland. Arrangements are under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
Mr. Finley died Friday at Cartmell Home for Aged.
He was born Dec. 1, 1923 in Eastland County to Jesse George and Maude McClarney Finley.
He was reared in Eastland County and had lived in Palestine since 1989. He was a retired precinct superintendent with the Texas Department of Transportation for 35 years.
Mr. Finley was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Eastland. He served in the Army during World War II.
He was preceded in death by daughters, Sandra and Karen.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gladys Finley of Palestine; sons, Jim Finley and Larry Finley, both of Palestine, and Terry Finley of Spring; brother, A.G. Finley of Florida; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. today at Bakker Funeral Home in Eastland.
Memorials can be make to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
