SAN BENITO, TX — Conrado Balli, Sr., 75, passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Visitation will be held Thursday, November 29, 2001 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 30, 2001 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church at 2 p.m. with Father Pedro Briseno officiating. Interment will follow at Garcia Cemetery in El Ranchito.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home.

Celestino Ortiz

MERCEDES— Celestino Ortiz, 63, died Tuesday at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel & Delores Ortiz; his brother, Albert Ortiz in 1988 and is survived by a daughter, Imelda Ortiz of Chicago Ill.; three brothers, Daniel Ortiz, Jr. of Santa Maria, Ernesto Ortiz of Mercedes, Ubaldo Ortiz of Porterville,  Calif.; four sisters, Adela Villarreal of Bowe, Wash., Santos Ramon of Sidrowolly, Wash., Aurora Mejia of Harlingen, Ernestina Martinez of Mercedes.

Funeral services will be held Thursday time and place to be announced.

Arrangements are under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Carl D. Piatt

HARLINGEN, TX — Carl D. Piatt, 85, passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2001 in Valley Baptist Medical Center. Carl moved to Harlingen in 1980 from Georgetown Illinois, when he retired from the University of Illinois. Carl was born April 11, 1916 in Cayuga, Indiana to Edward and Mollie Piatt.

Carl was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth E. Lindley; wife, Dorothy Piatt in January 2000; his parents, his sister, Gertrude Howard; and brother, Stanford; and stepson, Larry Vance.

Carl is survived by his daughter, Jeanne (Norman) Rademacher of Gifford, Ill; son, Dean (Jane) Piatt of Armstrong, Ill; stepdaughters, Sandra Beaver and Judy Boen both of Harlingen; stepsons, Robert Vance of San Antonio, William (Pam) Vance of Goreville, Ill., and Albert (Bonnie) Vance of Madisonville, KY., several grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; Sister, Grace Daniels of Danville, Ill; brothers, Morris (Evelyn) Piatt of Westville, Ill; and Truman Piatt of Georgetown, Ill.

Carl was a member of Morey Chapel Church East Westville, Ill. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Candice Downing along with the nursing staff 5th floor at Valley Baptist Medical Center and staff of Twinbrooke South Nursing Home for the wonderful care given. Even though he shall be greatly missed, we know he is at peace, free from pain, in the hands of the Lord.

Visitation hours will be held Thursday, November 29, 2001 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. with prayer services to be held at 6 p.m. with the Rev. David Mann officiating in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Alma Pike Holmes

MALAKOFF, TX — Alma Pike Holmes, 96, passed away on November 26, 2001, at Cedar Lake Nursing Home, Malakoff, TX. Burial was held at Restlawn Memorial Park, La Feria.

Alama, a 45 year resident of Harlingen, was an elementary teacher in the Harlingen ISD for 20 years. She and her husband, Harold (deceased), were charter members of Wesley Methodist Church in Harlingen. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows at Wesley Methodist Church in 1976. Alma moved to Malakoff, TX in 1997 to be near her daughter.

Survivors include her daughter, Lois Welch of Mabank, TX; sons, Richard Holmes of Harlingen and Dr. E Bruce Holmes of Macomb, Illinois; grandchildren, Debra Christian of Seven Points, TX, Wade Welch of Springtown, TX and David Welch of San Antonio; great grandchildren, Cassandra Christian, Christopher Welch and Jessica Welch; and niece, Lorene Perez of Rancho Viejo.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Kreidler-Ashcraft Funeral Directors.

Marjorie Sue "Suzy" Johnson

HARLINGEN, TX — Born to Emma Katherine and William Walter Grayson in El Dorado, Arkansas on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1912, Marjorie Sue  Johnson Passed away on November 26, 2001.

Suzy was a loving mother, homemaker, and member of the First United Methodist Church of Harlingen. She enjoyed sewing, interior decorating, music, playing the piano, playing golf and she especially loved knitting. She also had a fondness for pets, particularly dogs and a gift of fresh red roses would always light up her day. Suzy will be missed by all those she touched.

Her parents, Emma and Walter Grayson, a brother, Billy Grayson, and her loving husband of 41 years, Harry Herbert Johnson, preceded her in death.

Suzy is survived by her two sons, John (Johnny) Walter  Johnson (Susan) of Harlingen, and Thomas (Tom) William  Johnson (Anne) of Gilbert, AZ; 4 grandchildren, Deidrea Johnson, Marjory Hatfield (Tim), Christopher Johnson, Candace Johnson; 2 great grandchildren, John Pankhurst, and Savannah Pankhurst, and her loving caregiver and friend of 16 years, Rita Gutierrez.

Pallbearers will be Ronie Flinn, Lamar Smith, Joe Pennington, Scott Campbell, John McKelvey, and Joe Gutierrez.

Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. David M. Reed and the Rev. Judy K. Sessions of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church at Mont Meta Memorial Park, San Benito, TX on Thursday, November 29th at 2 p.m.

Visitation hours will be Wednesday, November 28, 2001 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Mary Lou Powers

HARLINGEN, TX — Mary Lou Powers passed away Wednesday evening, November 21, 2001, at the age of 65. She had resided in Harlingen, since 1992, having previously resided in Houston,  Texas from 1969 until moving to Harlingen. Mary Lou was a 1954 graduate of Parkersburg High School in  West Virginia. After graduating from high school, she moved to Columbus, Ohio where she worked in ticketing for TWA until 1959 when she married. Mary Lou was a wife and stay at home mother rearing her children for many years, returning to work in 1975 as an administrative assistant and bookkeeper for accounting firms in Houston until her retirement in 1992. She was a devoted wife to her husband and beloved mother and grandmother, as well as a kind and giving friend to all those who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom S. Powers.

She is survived by her two children, son, Michael F.  Taylor and daughter, Lisa L. Taylor; her daughter-in-law, Jeannette Taylor; her son-in-law, Robert C. Pemelton; two grandchildren, Devin  Taylor and Dylan Taylor; and three step-grandchildren, Hannah Pemelton, Katherine Pamelton, and Garrett Pemelton, all of Harlingen,  Texas. She is also survived by her brother, James Tippens of Cleveland, Ohio, and his wife, and family.

A memorial service celebrating Mary Lou’s life and the joy, love, and friendship she gave to so many will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 602 Morgan Blvd., Harlingen,  Texas 78550, on Saturday, December 8, 2001 at 11 a.m. Donations may be made in Mary Lou’s name to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Harlingen, Building Fund, at the Address listed above.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Marjorie Mae Mauldin

WESLACO, TX — Marjorie Mae Mauldin, 88, passed away on November 16, 2001 at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital in San Antonio,  Texas after a lengthy illness.

Marjorie was born in Arab Alabama on January 18, 1913 and moved to  Texas in 1936. She was a resident of Weslaco for 63 years.

Marjorie is survived by her children, Norma Jean Fichter (Randy) of Houston, Gay Nell Juenke (Henry) of Boerne, Tx, Laverne Norman (Robert) of Grand Saline, TX; Grandchildren, Debbie Fichter, Bradley Fichter, Leslie Stephens (Dan), Glenn Juenke (Mary), Spencer Juenke, Michelle Spigelmyer (Billy) and Matthew Norman. Also surviving her are great-grandchildren, Justin Stephens, Faith Stephens, Hannah Juenke, Sarah Juenke, Kinsey Spigelmyer, Jayden Spigelmyer, her sisters, Kathleen Hawk (Wilton) of Harlingen, Wilda Chandler of Corpus Christi, and a brother Stewart Whitlock of Pearland, TX.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 1, 2001 at 1:00 P.M. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco with the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Becker, Pastor, of the First Baptist Church of Weslaco, as the officiant. Interment will be private.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Ernestina Ovalle

LYFORD, TX — Ernestina Ovalle, 71, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX. She was born July 18, 1930 in Mercedes,  Texas. She lived in Willacy County all her life.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Lyford with Fr. Dave  Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Lyford Evergreen Cemetery. A Rosary will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Duddlesten Chapel.

She is survived by her husband, Felipe Ovalle of Lyford; one son, Juan Jose Ovalle of Lyford; four daughters, Guadalupe Serrato of Lyford, Ernestina Sanchez of Colorado, Lydia Maldonado and Rosa Garza of Lyford; three brothers, Pablo Mares of Indiana, Roberto Mares of Ohio and Juan Mares of California; three sisters, Donicia Mares of Harlingen, Paula Mares of Elsa and Ramona Martinez of California. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jose Antonio Garza, Juan Luis Garza, Estevan Serrato, Lawrance Serrato, Juan Jose Ovalle and Ray Mares.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Leta Mae Strickland

ARLINGTON, TX — Leta Mae Strickland, 87, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2001 in Arlington.

Private family memorial service was held in Fort Worth. Burial was in Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito,  Texas.

Leta Mae Strickland was born in February 8, 1914 in San Benito,  Texas.

She was preceded in death in 1956 by her husband, Shaw Strickland.

Mrs. Strickland is survived by her daughters, Patsy Feller and husband, Carl of Salado and Joann Richey and husband, Gerald of Arlington; son, Michael Shaw of San Angelo; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one great great grandson; sister, Johnnie Owens of Fredericksburg; and a sister-in-law, Lucy Bateman of Houston.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Arlington Funeral Home, Arlington, TX (817) 548-1791.

Aaron N. Fourdyce

LA FERIA, TX — Aaron N. Fourdyce of La Feria, formerly of Illinois, passed away on October 25, 2001 at the home of his daughter in Illinois.

He married Lillian Link on April 6, 1938.

He retired from International Harvester in 1976 as a Master Mechanic and he also ran Pleasant Acres Trailer Park in La Feria from 1978 until his death.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian (1976); 4 sisters, and one brother.

He married Susie Moore in 1978.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Joyce Sackville, Karen Waugh and husband, Vace, Audrey Saddoris; and son, John Fourdyce and wife, Kathy; 12 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Larsons Funeral Home in Rock Island, Illinois.

Heriberto Garza

MERCEDES, TX — Heriberto Garza, 53, died Monday morning at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, JaNene Garza; two sons, Emilio and Joe Garza; a daughter, Yvette Garza Cordova; his mother, Josefina T. Garza; and a brother, Jose Eloy Garza all of Mercedes.

Visitation will take place Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mercedes Christian Church. Interment will follow at Mercedes Memorial Restlawn Cemetery in Mercedes.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Lawrence Wiesman

HARLINGEN, TX — Lawrence Wiesman, 75, passed away on Saturday, November 24, 2001, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas after a six-year battle with cancer.

Mr. Wiesman was born to Carl Wiesman and Ida Lueb Wiesman February 18, 1926, in Lindsey,  Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Woodford AKA 86 during the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of World War II.

He was a farmer in the Rio Hondo area, manager of Arroyo Cotton Gin, and retired as manager of Valley Grain and Elevator at Port Harlingen.

He was a seed distributor for Pioneer Hi-Brid Int’l. Mr. Wiesman was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2410 and the American Legion Post 205. He was also a lifetime member of the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Keralum Council 2785. He served on local and state levels in the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the Rio Hondo ISD School Board, Cameron County Irrigation District #2, and Board of Directors for Southmost Soil and Conservation District.

Mr. Wiesman is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a sister. Survivors include his wife, Mary Barbara Wiesman, of Rio Hondo whom he married September 9, 1948 at St. Benedicts Catholic Church in San Benito, TX; five sons, John Wiesman of Rio Hondo, Thomas Wiesman of Rio Hondo, William (Bonnie) Wiesman of Cameron, TX, Charles (Karen) Wiesman of Kingsville, TX and Richard (Sherry) Wiesman of Harlingen, TX. He is also survived by a brother, Leroy (Dolores) of Tulsa, OK; sisters-in-law, Bertha Wiesman of Gainesville, TX and Leona (Ben) Miller of Dallas, TX; brother-in-law, Rufus Turnam of Denton, TX; 4 grandsons, 11 granddaugthers, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2001 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. The Knights of Columbus will provide an Honor Guard prior to the Rosary.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Rio Hondo, with Father James Foelker, OMI Celebrant.

Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, TX. military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 205. Pallbearers will be Billy Mac Simpson, Matthew MCCarthy, Rolando Muniz, Bob Hatch, LT. William Wiesman III, David Gusler, David Newell, and Travis Wiesman.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, along with special friends, James McCarthy, Johnny Goodman, and Jim Cutler. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society (5413 S. McColl, Edinburg, TX 78539), Oblate Missions of San Antonio (P.O. Box 86, San Antonio, TX 78212) or a charity of your choice. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Todd Shenkenberg and Dr. Robert Collier along with the Nursing Staff of Valley Baptist Hospital for the care given on the multiple occassions of his confinement there.

Even though he shall be greatly missed, we know he is at peace, free from constant pain, and in the hands of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
