He was born on May 27, 1927 to Walter Burton and Erin Vanston Hailey. He lived his early life in Mesquite,  Texas, where he became the youngest Eagle Scout in Dallas County. After attending Kemper military School in Boonville, Missouri, he served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He returned to the University of  Texas where he earned a B.B.A. degree in marketing and advertising.

He went on to work for Burrus Mills in Dallas,  Texas where he rapidly became a sales manager. For many years he was also emcee for the company’s popular country music band, The Light Crust Doughboys.

With his well-developed sales skills he became an agent for Lone Star Life Insurance Company. After acquiring the company, he created an innovative marketing strategy for selling insurance to the Independent Grocers Association. This led to the rapid expansion of the company, which eventually went public and was then purchased by a large national retail store, K-Mart.

He went on to co-found two additional public companies-Coda Energy, a  Texas based oil company, and American Physicians Service, a medical malpractice insurance company.

He was very active in leadership positions in many community service organizations including serving as President of the  White Rock Rotary Club and Chairman of several Boy Scouts of America districts. He was founder of the Cowboy Artist Museum in Kerrville.

After an impressive entrepreneurial career, he chose to spend his remaining years unselfishly sharing his wisdom with others through seminars and speeches. His Hill Country Ranch in Hunt,  Texas became a frequent venue for the training of entrepreneurs, professionals and business people from throughout North America. Most recently, the training company he founded, Planned Marketing Associates, Inc. has become the leading practice management training resource in the dental industry. He was a frequent featured speaker at major dental conventions throughout the United States, Canada and Australia as well as at his Dental Boot Kamp seminars.

He extended his influence to younger people by founding Eagle "U"– a youth success seminar giving high school and college students a seven-year career head start. Thousands of young people have benefited from this training held at university campuses throughout the country each summer.

His positive influence has been felt by thousands of people who he inspired and encouraged in a very personal way through his seminars, speeches, books, tapes and personal relationships.
