Samuel F. Shankel
Samuel Fields Shankel, 83, of Shankel Mill Road, Bristol Tennessee, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Bristol Tennessee and a member of the Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder.
He was owner of Shankel Milling Company, Shankel Poultry Farm and retired from Leroy M. Hull Company.
Mr. Shankel was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Baker Shankel.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Shankel Dunn, Charlotte, N.C., and Mrs. Freddie L. (Cathy S.) Arnold, Bristol Tennessee; a son, Dwight Shankel, Charlotte, N.C.; two grandsons, Patrick Dunn, Charlotte, N.C., and Lee Arnold, Bristol; a granddaughter, Rebecca Arnold, Bristol; and a great-grandson.
Akard Funeral Home is in charge.

Mattie F. Smith
MENDOTA -- Mattie Faye Sproles Smith, 85, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Mendota, a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and the widow of Herman "Harm" Smith.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Calvin (Hazel) Tester, Mrs. James (Bobbie) Hyland, Mrs. Mark (Teddy) Bentley, Mrs. Barrett (Chris) Dye and Mrs. Phillip (Peggy) Smith; a sister, Ruby Smith; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Barbara A. Stidham
DAMASCUS -- Barbara Ann Stidham, 66, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Claude Stidham; two daughters, Sherry Hubbard and Shelly Moore, both of Pound; a son, Chris Stidham, Mebane, N.C.; her mother, Pearl Hopkins Countiss, Pound; a sister, Geraldine Mayorshi, Roanoke; a brother, James Countiss, Pound; and seven grandchildren.
Baker Funeral Home, Pound, is in charge.

Virginia F. Bishop

Ms. Virginia Frances Bishop, 86, of Bristol Virginia, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of McComas, W.Va., and had lived in Bristol for the past 21 years.
She attended Shakesville Tabernacle Baptist Church and was a retired nurse employed in Washington, D.C., Arlington, Va., and Johnston Memorial Hospital, in Abingdon.
Survivors include a son, David McCracken, Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Robbins, Bristol Virginia, and Mrs. Ruby Cofflin, Wilmington, N.C.; two grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Minerva O. Brown

NORTON -- Mrs. Minerva O. Cyphers Brown, 92, formerly of Richlands, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in a Norton hospital.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home, Richlands, is in charge.

Marion E. Dougherty Jr.

KINGSPORT -- Marion Ewing "Buddy" Dougherty Jr., 61, of 2009 Pinebrook Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at his family home in the Nottingham Community of Scott County, on the North Fork of the Holston River.
He was a native of Scott County, Va., grew up in the Nottingham Methodist Church and was a member of the First Broad Street United Methodist Church, in Kingsport.
He grew up near Hiltons, Va., and attended East Tennessee State University. He served in the military in the 502nd MP Company, 2nd Armoured Division and retired from Eastman's Technical Services Laboratories, after 29 years of service. He also worked on his family farm, and coached for many years at the Kingsport Boys Club. He was a charter member and coach in the Kingsport Youth Soccer Association.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Chilcote Dougherty; a son, M.E. "Buck" Dougherty III, Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Shirley Ferguson Pearson, Nickelsville, Va., and Nancy Godsey, Gate City; six nephews; seven nieces; several aunts and cousins; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Gate City Funeral Home, Gate City, is in charge.

Elery E. Elliott

Mr. Elery Ellington Elliott, 79, of Bristol Virginia, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Wise and had lived in Bristol since 1946.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Edna Mae Elliott; a son, Billy Ray Elliott, Bristol Virginia; a brother, Otis Elliott, Bristol Virginia; three sisters, Nada McDaniel, Bristol Virginia, Ruby Gilly, Canoga Park, Calif., and Margie Baker, Newark, Ohio; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

John R. Marshall

WISE -- John Ralph "Jake" Marshall, 69, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Norton Community Hospital, Norton.
He had lived in Athens, Texas, for several years prior to moving back to Wise in 1998.
He was a retired electrician with Ford Motor Company, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean Wheatley Marshall; a son, Douglas Marshall, Haverhill, Mass.; a daughter, Sharon Vandiver, Fairfield, Texas; a sister, Lois Smith, Wise; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise, is in charge.

Gladys Price

LEBANON -- Mrs. Gladys Price, 72, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Russell County Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Russell County, was of the Baptist faith and was the widow of Vernice Price.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Freddie (Mary) Shreve and Mrs. Randall (Louise) Herndon, both of Lebanon; a son, Kenneth Price, Lebanon; seven grandchildren, Teresa King, Gregory Shreve, Randall V. (John) Herndon Jr., Gary Shreve, Greta Caudill, Robbie Herndon and Tracy McCown; and six great-grandchildren.
Russell County Funeral Home, Lebanon, is in charge.

William D. Rasnake

MENDOTA -- Mr. William David Rasnake, 61, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at the home of his son.
He was a native of Dickenson County, had lived most of his life in Lebanon and Abingdon, and was a member of the First Assembly Church of God, Bristol, Va.
Survivors include his former wife, Shirlene Rasnake; four sons, Michael David Rasnake, Mendota, William Brett Rasnake and James Brian Rasnake, both of Abingdon, and Gary Keith Rasnake, Meadowview; two daughters, Pamela Mae Woodard, Damascus, and Anita Christene Montigue, Beckley, W.Va.; four brothers, Dentin Dewel Rasnake, Madison Heights, Mich., Graham Kenneth Rasnake, Clyde Elmer Rasnake and James Phillip Rasnake, all of Abingdon; four sisters, Mrs. Billy (June) Lester, Mrs. Gary (Lynn) Thompson, and Mrs. Charlie (Annette) Branch, all of Abingdon, and Mrs. Ray (Nadine) Wagner, Danville, Va.; and 11 grandchildren.

Preston L. Rife

BIG ROCK -- Preston Lee "Pet" Rife, 60, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of New Zion Freewill Baptist Church, Big Rock, where he served as a deacon and treasurer.
Mr. Rife was a retired employee of Virginia Pocahontas Coal Company No. 1 Mine and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 1509.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Helton Rife; a daughter, Diane Rife Lester, Big Rock; two sons, Bradley Keith Rife, Honaker, and Kenneth Lee Rife, Big Rock; three sisters, Lillian McMillian, Satsuma, Fla., Marie Ashby, Hurley, Va., and Berchie Looney, Ohio; seven brothers, Kermit Rife, Crystal River, Fla., Curby Rife, Grundy, Hufford Rife, Hurley, Hassell Rife, Satsuma, Fla., Franklin "Dee" Rife, Ralph "Bobby" Rife and Jimmy Rife, all of Hurley; three granddaughters; and a grandson.
Grundy Funeral Home is in charge.
