CLEVELAND, Va. -- Madie Musick, 97, of the Weavers Creek Community, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Russell County, a member of Weavers Creek Baptist Church, and the widow of Steve Musick.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Sargent of Castlewood, and Eva Ruth Musick of Cleveland, Va.; three sons, Samuel C. Musick, Robert B. Musick and Henry Musick, all of Cleveland, Va.; a sister, Adalene Sykes of Lebanon; ten grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Earl J. Phelps
Earl J. Phelps, 84, of 520 Vance St., Bristol, Va., died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Bristol Nursing Home.
He was a native of Washington County, Va., and had lived his entire life in the Bristol area.
He was active in evangelistic work and sang with his family gospel quartet since childhood. He was one of the last survivors of the Bristol Sessions recordings with Ralph Peer in 1927.
He attended Westhighlands Church and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Medical Corps. He was a life member of the DAV.
He owned and operated Phelps Used Cars for 34 years.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Hunt Phelps; a son, Paul J. Phelps of Bristol Tennessee; a daughter, Lois Phelps of Bristol Virginia; a brother, Roy Phelps of Denison, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Aldin (Mabel) Morrell of Bristol Tennessee, and Mrs. J.S. (Elma) Cotter of Blountville; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons.

Louie L. Quillen Jr.
SEASIDE, Calif. -- Louie Lincoln Quillen Jr., 72, died Monday, March 15, 1999, in Veterans Administration Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif.
He was a native of Virginia, and a resident of Monterey County, Calif., for 38 years.
He was a retired major in the U.S. Army, serving 23 years. He earned numerous decorations, including the Combat Infantryman's Badge and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Retired Officers Association.
Maj. Quillen's hobbies included carpentry. He enjoyed golf and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Silvana; a son, Larry Targioni of Phoenix; three brothers, Kenneth Quillen of Grafton, Wis., Paul Quillen of St. Paul, and Bill Quillen of Colonial Heights, Va.; a sister, Anna Ruth Henegar of St. Paul; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday in California.

HONAKER -- Fayrene Compton Ray, 67, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in a Grundy hospital.

Arthur Roth
Col. Arthur Roth, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999.
Col. Roth was a graduate of West Point and a career Army officer who served in World War II, and had numerous overseas assignments from 1927 to 1957.
In retirement, Col. Roth lived in San Francisco for 30 years, prior to moving to Bristol House in 1993. He was the widower of Ruth Giffin Roth.
Survivors include a son, Art Roth of Bristol; and a grandson, Stephen Roth.
Services and interment will be held in West Point, N.Y.

APPALACHIA -- W.C. "Tom" Skeen, 88, died Wednesday, March 31. 1999, in Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.
He was the widower of Vinnie K. Skeen, and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Appalachia.
He was a member of Appalachia Lions Club and a former Chief of Appalachia Fire Department.
Survivors include a daughter, Faye Read Hill of Rock Hill, S.C.; a sister, Reba Skeen of the home; two grandsons, Thomas Read and Mike Read; two granddaughters, Tracy Skeen and Patty Crumb; and four great-grandchildren.

Smith Jr., 73, of 141 Brook Lane, Bristol, Va., died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Wellmont Hospice House.
Mr.
Smith was a lifelong resident of Bristol Virginia, and a long-time funeral director. He was a former co-owner of Blevins Funeral Home, serving as vice-president and general manager for many years, and most recently as the Senior Director. He had been serving families through funeral service for the past 58 years.
He was a member and past president of the Southwest Virginia Funeral Directors Association, and a member and past president of Post Q of the Travelers Protective Association.
Mr.
Smith was a U.S. Army combat infantry veteran of World War II, where he received several decorations including three Purple Hearts.
He was a member of Reynolds Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Billie W. Smith; two sisters, Ruth Davidson of Washington, D.C., and Dottie Haze of Bristol Tennessee; three nieces; and three nephews.

He was a lifelong resident of Abingdon and a member of the Chestnut Grove Community Church.
He was a retired employee of Southern States.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Wise; five sons, Bradley Wise, Eugene Wise, Clyde Dudley Wise, Bobby Wayne Wise and Manual Keith Wise, all of Abingdon; a daughter, Darla Wise Willis of Meadowview; his mother, Mandy Tignor of Abingdon; seven brothers, the Rev. Paul F. Ackley Jr.
Paul F. Ackley Jr., 56, of 330 Godsey Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Wellmont Hospice House.
He was a native of New Jersey and moved to Bristol in 1980, after completing a 20-year military career.
He attended St. Joseph High School in Camden, N.J., and received his diploma from the Army-Navy Academy in Carlsbad, Calif. He attended Bristol College and Tri-City Technical School. He was a retired chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy, and a member of Fleet Reserve Association.
Mr. Ackley was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, and a 4th degree with the Knights of Columbus, Council 6695 of Bristol.
He was employed with Sherwin Williams, Electro Mechanical Corporation, and had maintenance contracts for several years at Virginia High, Virginia Junior High, Dillard Paper Company, and St. Anne's Catholic Church and School.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Garland Ackley; two daughters, Bernadette Ackley of Douglasville, Ga., and Amber Jone of Wausau, Wis.; a son, Brian Ackley of Bristol Tennessee; his mother, Rita Hopkins Ackley of Westmont, N.J.; seven sisters, Peggy Schenk of Mount Holly, N.J., Sharon Lauther of Pine Hill, N.J., Mary Ann Quinlan of Marlton, N.J., and Kathleen Ackley, Penny Ackley, Julie Ackley and Frances Chatelain, all of Westmont, N.J.; five brothers, Jimmy Ackley of Audobon, N.J., Dennis Ackley of Pennsauken, N.J., Larry Ackley of Pitman, N.J.
