Bruce A. Johnson

FISHER, W.Va. -- The Rev. Bruce .Allen Johnson, 49, died Aug. 30, 1999, at his residence in Fisher.

Born Nov. 18, 1949, in Virginia Beach, he was the son of Margie Allen Johnson of Chesapeake and the late Martin Johnson Jr. The Rev. Johnson was a dedicated pastor of Bible Baptist Church in Fisher.

He is survived by his wife, Jeri Oakham Johnson; a daughter, Jennifer ``Karis" Paugh of Fisher; two sons, Bruce Allen Johnson II of Haines City, Fla., and Timothy Paul Johnson of Auburndale, Fla.; two sisters, Lois Herzing of Nags Head and Charlotte Holton of Gates, N.C.; a brother, Martin Johnson III of Chesapeake; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Elmore Chambers Funeral Home, Moorefield, W.Va. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bible Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield. Memorials may be made to the Bible Baptist Church Missions Fund, P.O. Box 31, Fisher, WV 26818.

Lorene Johnson

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Lorene .Johnson, 75, of Woodstock and formerly of Virginia Beach, passed away Aug. 30, 1999, at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper, Ga. She was retired from the city of Virginia Beach public school system.

Survivors include two daughters, Luanne Crissom of Woodstock, Ga., and Jeanne Coxe of Raleigh, N.C.; four sons, Allan Johnson of Chesapeake, James V. Johnson and Michael Johnson, both of Virginia Beach, and Tim Johnson of Chesapeake; a sister, Elsie Tilden of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Keith Burkinshaw of Mitchell, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a niece, Linda Wickline of Chesapeake.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Rosewood Memorial Park by the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel.

Mary M. Knight

HARLINGEN, Texas -- Mary M. Knight died Aug. 25, 1999. A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, is in charge.

Beverly Yarus Steel

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. -- Beverly Yarus Steel, 77, a Norfolk native, died in her home on Aug. 30, 1999, after a long bout with cancer.

Mrs. Steel grew up in the Little Creek section of Norfolk and graduated from Kempsville High School. She was the widow of the late Capt. Henry Edwards Steel, U.S. Coast Guard, a former captain of the port in Portsmouth and a Norfolk native. The Steels lived in Larchmont before retiring to Southern Shores, N.C., in the late 1970s.

Mrs. Steel, who was the daughter of the Gilbert and Mary Yarus, moved to Tennessee several years ago to be near her daughter, Beverly Hill.

In Norfolk, Mrs. Steel was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. She joined St. Andrew's By the Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head, and later became a member of St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Hendersonville where she was a member of the altar guild until her death.

Mrs. Steel is survived by three daughters, Beverly Hill of Nashville, Tenn., Carol Steel Wood and her husband, William, of Charlottesville, Kathryn Steel Pione and her husband, Timothy, of Columbus, Ohio; four sons, David L. Hill and his wife, Charisse, of Nags Head, N.C., Joel Gilbert Hill, also of Nags Head, and Thomas Reynolds Hill of Santa Monica, Calif.; a sister, Shirley Weller; and her husband, William, of Norfolk; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Steel's marriage to the late J. Thomas Hill ended in divorce.

A funeral will be held at St. Joseph's in Hendersonville on 11 a.m. Friday. Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home, Hendersonville, is handling arrangements.

A memorial service in Norfolk is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Willowbrook Hospice, 145 Southeast Parkway, Franklin, TN 37064.

Annette H. Harris

CHESAPEAKE -- Annette H. Harris, 83, of the 700 block of Hassell Drive, died Sept. 5, 1999, in a local hospital.

She was born in South Norfolk.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Clarence N. Harris; a daughter, Brenda H. Jones of McLean, Va.; a son, Randall A. Harris of Chesapeake; a sister, Elva Hanbury of Chesapeake; a brother, Claude B. Hanbury of Chesterfield, Va.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Lois Tegerides, and a brother, Linwood Hanbury.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, by Pastor Cecil Chambers. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to South Norfolk Congregational Christian Church, Chesapeake. The family will be at the funeral home from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Harry C. Paxson Jr.

CHESAPEAKE -- Harry C. Paxson Jr., 93, of the 200 block of Wilson Drive, died Sept. 5, 1999, at his residence.

Mr. Paxson was born in Waverly, Va., but from age 3, he grew up in old Norfolk County. He was the son of the late Harry C. Paxson Sr. and Katie James Paxson. Mr. Paxson was also predeceased by his two brothers, Rowland James Paxson and B.F. Wilson Paxson. He was the widower of Virginia Hall Paxson, his wife of 65 years. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Chesapeake for more than 65 years, where he served on the administrative board and was a trustee for many years.

Mr. Paxson graduated from South Norfolk High School in 1926. He received his bachelor of science degree in 1931 from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg. He earned his master's degree in 1951 from the University of Virginia.

Mr. Paxson returned to South Norfolk High School as a teacher and coach until he became assistant principal in 1940. In 1943, he became supervisor of physical education for Norfolk County public schools. He went on to serve the Norfolk County public school system as director of recreation programs in 1944, director of physical education in 1946 and assistant superintendent for personnel in 1951. In 1963, he went on to become assistant superintendent for personnel of Chesapeake public schools until his retirement in 1972. After retirement, he became a real estate agent and was a member of the Million Dollar Club. He was a member of the Visiting Committee to evaluate high schools for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Mr. Paxson was also named as a member of the Long Range Recreational Planning Committee for the city of Chesapeake.

Mr. Paxson was appointed as a marriage commissioner in 1986, and in 1989 was inducted into the Chesapeake Sports Hall of Fame. He was named ``First Citizen of Chesapeake" by the Jaycees in 1994.

Other memberships included the national, Virginia and Chesapeake education associations, Virginia Department of Superintendents, past president of the Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, past president of the Virginia Supervisors of Health, Omicron Delta Kappa, Leadership Honor Fraternity, Norfolk Community Chest, the Chesapeake Bay Rotary Club, Great Bridge Ruritans, where he served as secretary and treasurer, a 50-year member of the Great Bridge Masonic Lodge, Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the Red Cross, vice chairman and director of 4-H Camp Farrar, Meals on Wheels, and the South Norfolk Old Timers Club.

Survivors include his daughter, Shirley Ann Paxson of Chesapeake; three nieces, Bonnie P. Moore, Nancy P. Whiting and Patsy P. Beasley; and two nephews, Rowland James Paxson and Richard Earl Paxson.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sidney M. Oman Cancer Treatment Center, c/o Chesapeake General Hospital, 736 N. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23320, or to the building fund of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 472 N. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23320, or to a charity of your choice.

Bettie S. Campbell

NORFOLK -- Bettie Vivian.Simmons Campbell, 74, of the 3700 block of Pamlico Circle, died Sept. 4, 1999.

She was born in Norfolk County and retired as a saleswoman from High's Ice Cream Stores. She was a member of Norview Baptist Church. She was the class historian of the class of 1942, Hickory High School, and was a member of the Beta Club.

Survivors include her husband, Archie L. Campbell; two daughters, Kathryn L. McConnell of Springfield, Mo., and Patricia I. Wilson and her husband, Rick, of Naples, Fla.; a son, Archie Richard Campbell and his wife, Joanne, of Chesapeake; a half brother, Kinzie Cahoon of Belhaven, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Walter William Campbell of Chesapeake; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Larry Bateman. The family will receive friends at the residence. Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, Chesapeake, is handling arrangements.

Mary A. Childress

NORFOLK -- Mary Ann Childress, 83, of the 400 block of Lucas Ave., died Sept. 5, 1999. Mrs. Childress was a member of the Carrow Baptist Church.

Mrs. Childress is survived by her sons and their wives, William J. and Jessie Maxine Childress of Norfolk, and Charles T. and Carolyn B. Childress of Hertford, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, William O. Childress.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, where a chapel service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park.

William D. Neighbors

NORFOLK -- William Douglas Neighbors, 34, of the 400 block of Nicholson St., died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, in Norfolk Health Care.

He was born June 6, 1965, in Portsmouth, the son of Cammon W. Neighbors of Texas and Mary Adams Neighbors Lee of Norfolk.

In addition to his mother and father, he is survived by a sister, Sandra Adams of Norfolk; four brothers, Dentro Ford and Earl Lee, both of Chesapeake, Antonio Neighbors of Baltimore and Carl Neighbors of Portsmouth; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the home of his mother, 427 Nicholson St., Norfolk. For additional information, please contact her at 627-3186. Cremation Society of Virginia, Tidewater Office, is in charge of arrangements.

Carrie H. Sorey

NORFOLK -- Carrie Hodges Sorey, 82, of the 1600 block of E. Ocean View Ave., died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999.

Mrs. Sorey was born in Portsmouth and was a retired secretary for the Norfolk public school system. She was a member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church in Norfolk. Mrs. Sorey was a past president of Ocean View Women's Democratic Club. She also served as a national officer in the National Association of Educational Secretaries. Mrs. Sorey was the daughter of the late Elmer St. Clair Hodges and the late Mrs. Lena May Taylor Hodges. She was the widow of G. Maynard Sorey.

Mrs. Sorey is survived by her daughter, Lennel S. Sheffield of Norfolk; her son, William M. Sorey and his wife, Grace, of Richmond; two sisters, Mildred Poole of Norfolk and Genevieve Spry of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Angie Gardner, Elizabeth Sheffield, Rachel Sorey and Adam Sorey; and two great-grandchildren, Lynda Andrews and Robert Gardner.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday in Miles Memorial United Methodist Church, 9450 Granby St., at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Morris Bennett. The family requests that memorials be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.
