Melvin T. Jacobsen

CHESAPEAKE -- Melvin Thomas Jacobsen, 75, of Rosemary Lane, died Sept. 4, 1998, in his home.

Mr. Jacobsen, a native Metropolitan, Calif., was retired from Litton Business Systems. He was a member of St. Therese's Catholic Church, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, formerly coached youth baseball in Portsmouth and Chesapeake, and was a member of Bide-A-Wee Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Lorene Dearing Jacobsen; two daughters, Nancy Vick and her husband Jim Vick of Chesapeake, Pam Shepherd and her husband Jeff Shepherd of Ponder, Texas; a son, Chris Jacobsen of Norfolk; three sisters, Lucille Tunzini of Ferndale, Calif., Kathleen Smith of Ft. Bragg, Calif., Maxene Jacobsen of Fortuna, Calif.; four grandchildren, Amy Hollowood, Jay Vick, Kate Jacobsen, Zachary Shepherd; and two great grandchildren, Sean Hollowood and Errin Hollowood.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 7 p.m. Monday in St. Therese's Catholic Church by the Rev. Robert L. Cummins. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at church prior to and after the Mass. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements.

Ola W. Marttila

CHESAPEAKE -- Ola Waye Marttila, 68, died Sept. 3, 1998. A loving and devoted mother, she will be dearly missed by her children.

Mrs. Marttila is survived by her loving daughters, Kristie Wagoner, Donna Amos, Sharon MacDougall, Rita Terry and Cynthia Marttila; her sisters, Rosa Fuller, Nell Sutherland, Ruth Coszo, Linda Fuller and Lexie Looney; her brother, Stoney Fuller; 14 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel. A service will be conducted on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment at Princess Anne Memorial Park will follow.

Dorothy B. Renfro

CHESAPEAKE -- Dorothy B. Renfro, 69, of Benefit Road, died Sept. 5, 1998, at Chesapeake General Hospital.

Born in Tulsa, Okla., she attended Wellesley College and graduated from Oklahoma University. While attending Oklahoma University she met her husband as he was entering the U.S. Air Force and she traveled with him extensively during his career. Upon his retirement they decided to remain in the city of Chesapeake and have lived there for over 28 years.

After settling in Chesapeake, Dorothy became very involved in the United States Pony Clubs, an organization that allowed her to mix her love of horses and children. She was involved at the local, regional and national levels of activities. She donated use of her horses, her facilities and her time to encourage many Pony Club members to success. This brought her a great deal of joy.

She was a life member of the USPC as well as continuing her support as a sustaining member yearly. Her other memberships included; the American Horse Show Association, Virginia Horse Council, Southeast Virginia Dressage Association, Tidewater Horse Council and other organizations that shared her love of horses. At various times she had been editor of newsletters, helped on committees and performed other duties in both leadership and support roles.

Survivors include her husband, Lt. Col. C. Ralph Renfro, USAF, Ret.; her two sons, Richard L. Renfro of Falls Church, Va., and Col. Charles L. Renfro, USAF of Hickman AFB, Hawaii; her two daughters, Rebecca L. Bush of Bartlesville, Okla., and Beverly R. Renfro of Clover, Va., and seven grandchildren.

Viewing will begin on Tuesday. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the United States Pony Club, 4701 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, Ky. 40511.

Henry L. Darden Sr.

NORFOLK -- Henry L. Darden Sr., of the 1300 block of Maltby Ave., passed quietly and peacefully into eternal rest on Wednesday morning, Sept. 2, 1998, in the comfort of his home. He was a native of Boykins, Va., (Southampton County) and the son of the late May Lyttle Darden.

Mr. Darden was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a heavy equipment operator after 32 years of service. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a 50-year member of Excelsior Lodge No. 87, F. & A.M. PHA. He was also a WWII Army veteran.

He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Madelin M. Bembry and Cheryl Yvette Darden-Hayes; two sons, Henry Lee Darden Jr. and Luther B. Hall; five sisters, Mildred Harrell, Classie Cox, Gladys Wiggins, Jessie Moore and Callie Mae Jones; two brothers, Leober Darden and Edward Darden; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

A funeral will be conducted on Wednesday at noon in the sanctuary of Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Jesse E. Arrington officiating. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Service, and a wake will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at 2709 Spruce St.

Herbert L. Henderson

NORFOLK -- After a courageous battle with cancer and other illnesses, Herbert ``Herb" L. Henderson went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 4, 1998.

Born in Vanceburg, Ky., but raised in Manchester, Ohio, he would later make Norfolk his home. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service. After retirement, he worked for Tracor & Raytheon corporations in the Tidewater area. He was an active member of Burrows Memorial Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a deacon and taught the Men's Bible Class.

He will always be remembered for his kindness, faith, and especially his humor.

Survivors include his wife, Gerrie Henderson; daughter, LeeAnn Henderson; stepchildren, Kenneth Nai, Karen Nai, Doreen Lavorato, Rolanda Gombar and Shaun Epps; one grandson, James Gage Henderson; two brothers, Dean Henderson and Jr. Henderson; seven step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Ermal and Wilma Henderson and a son, Travis Henderson.

A homegoing service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service.

Julia Hitz

NORFOLK -- Julia Hitz, a longtime resident of Norfolk and a native of Havana, passed away on Aug. 9, 1998, in Miami, Fla.

An art instructor most of her life, she was best known in recent years for her Norfolk Cartoon Studio, where she taught pastels and watercolors to children and adults before retiring to Florida. Among her many accomplishments, Mrs. Hitz was a well-known volunteer at DePaul Hospital and Children's Hospital, where she used her ``art therapy" to inspire the recovery of both the old and the young.

Mrs. Hitz, a widow, leaves behind two sisters; two sons; a daughter; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Services were held in Miami, Fla., and a memorial service will be hosted in Norfolk for her friends. For information, please call 305-867-0633.

Chattana Jones

NORFOLK -- Infant Chattana Jones, three weeks, of the 100 block of W. 36th St., died Aug. 31, 1998. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.

Eric A. Jones

NORFOLK -- Eric Anthony Jones of the 200 block of W. 35th St., died Sept. 1, 1998. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Carlos A. Howard Funeral Chapel, Norfolk.

Vernon L. LeTempt

NORFOLK -- Vernon Luther LeTempt, 76, of Westmont Ave., died Sept. 5, 1998, after a long illness, in DePaul Medical Center.

Mr. LeTempt was born in Blodgett, Mo., and was the son of the late Louis Samuel and Barbara Carrol LeTempt. He was retired from the U.S. Navy after 31 years of service and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. LeTempt was a member of the Khedive Temple, past captain of the Khedive Corvettes, and was a member of the Fleet Reserve. He was also a member of Ilmo Baptist Church, Ilmo, Mo. Mr. LeTempt was preceded in death by a son, Robert Vernon LeTempt; a sister, Norma Ledure; and two brothers, Norman LeTempt and Lewis LeTempt.

He is survived by his wife, Aldona LeTempt of the home; three sons, William Vincent LeTempt of Norfolk, Richard Lewis LeTempt of Norfolk, and James Edward LeTempt of Chesapeake; a sister, Louise Carbaugh of Jefferson City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held at a later date in Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton, Va., with interment to follow. Cremation Society of Virginia, Tidewater Office, is handling arrangements.

Roscoe C. Spencer

NORFOLK -- Roscoe Clayton Spencer, 85, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, in the Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and was the son of the late Elizabeth Krackenfels and Roscoe Conklin Spencer. Mr. Spencer served as a U.S. naval officer having served in World War II and in Korea. He retired as a teacher with the Norfolk Public Schools having taught at Maury High School for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Jones Spencer; two daughters, Barbara Sue Martin of Morrow, Ga., and Sandra I. Jaeger of Parker, Colo.; two sons, R. Thomas Spencer and Michael C. Spencer, both of Norfolk; a sister-in-law, Jane J. Bennett formerly of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; four grandchildren; and two great-granchildren.

A private burial of his cremated remains will be held at a later date in Shavertown, Pa. The family will be at Cox Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. for a visitation with friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia, 6401 Auburn Drive, Virginia Beach, Va. 23464.

Helen D. Tarver

NORFOLK -- Helen Daye Tarver of the 4600 block of Mayflower Ave., died Sept. 4, 1998, at a local nursing home.

Born in South Hampton Co., Va., she was the widow of Henry Tarver. She was a retired machine operator and a member of First Baptist Church, Bute Street, Norfolk.

Survivors include two daughters, Mae Daye Johnson and Emma Daye Graham; one brother, Willie Daye; two nieces, Denise Hairston and Shirley Daye; one nephew, James Daye; three stepdaughters; and four stepsons.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Bute Street, by the Rev. Robert Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence. The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Graves Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

James M. Toomey

NORFOLK -- James M. Toomey, 70, died Aug. 20, 1998, in a Portsmouth hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Katherine Enright Maynard of Raleigh, N.C.; two nephews, E. Thomas Enright Jr. of Norfolk and John W. Enright of Williamsburg; a niece, Patricia Flachbart of California; and a grandniece, Carrie Cupps of Virginia Beach.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Christ The King Catholic Church on Tidewater Drive in Norfolk. Memorial donations may be made to Christ The King Church.

Samuel Tyler

NORFOLK -- Samuel Tyler of the 200 block of Hardy Ave., died Sept. 2, 1998. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Cemetery. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.

Martha M. Wilson

NORFOLK -- Martha M. Wilson, of the 500 block of Nicholson St., was called home for her just reward on Thursday morning, Sept. 3, 1998, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was a native of Greenville, N.C., and the daughter of the late Henry L. and Corrine Williams.

She retired from S.L. Nusbaum Realtors and was a member of Campostella Heights Seventh-day Adventist.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her husband, Arlester Wilson, of the home; four daughters, Patricia L. Lynn of Chesapeake, Corrine Hinton and Katrina A. Wilson, both of Norfolk, and Gail D. Martin of Virginia Beach; one son, Arlester Wilson Jr. of Norfolk; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a very special devoted friend, Mary Linder-Pittman.

A funeral will be conducted on Tuesday at noon at Campostella Heights SDA, 1006 Oakwood St., Norfolk, by Pastor George E. Thornton Sr. with burial in Riverside Cemetery. Viewing will be Monday from 1 to 6 p.m. and the family will be at 560 E. Brambleton Ave. Riddick Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Edward I. Blunder Jr.
PORTSMOUTH -- Edward I. Blunder Jr., of the 900 block of Wilcox Ave., died Sept. 4, 1998, in Maryview Hospital.
Mr. Blunder, a native of Franklinton, N.C., was a son of the late Sarah and Irvin Blunder. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Base as a custodian after 35 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Noble Street Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Carrie L. Blunder; two daughters, Eva and her husband, the Rev. James Grimes, and Emma and her husband, Dewey Blount, both of Portsmouth; one brother, Collins Blunder of Henderson, N.C.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister-in-law, Lena Mae McEachen; one niece; one nephew; and a host of cousins, in-laws, and friends.

A funeral will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Noble Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Henry P. Jones, presiding, and eulogy by the Rev. James Grimes. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery with military honors. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will be at noon Monday. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Areather Daniels

PORTSMOUTH -- Areather ``Re Re" Daniels, 82, of the 3800 block of Old Farm Road, died Sept. 2, 1998, in Maryview Hospital.

A native of Gatesville, N.C., she was the widow of Leroy Daniels Sr. She was a member of Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by her two daughters, Glendora Harris and Annmarie Faulcon, both of Portsmouth; three sons, the Rev. Leroy Daniels Jr., Junathan Daniels and Jerome Daniels, all of Portsmouth; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Melvin O. Marriner, presiding, and eulogy by the Rev. Leroy Daniels Jr. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Hampton. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon Monday. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
