M. Julia Munoz

PORTSMOUTH -- Maria Julia Munoz, 86, of Harbor Court, died Aug. 26, 1998, in Maryview Medical Center.

Mrs. Munoz, a native of Coamo, Puerto Rico, was the widow of Angel Mercedes Munoz and a member of St. Therese's Catholic Church, Chesapeake. She was retired from the State of New York.

Survivors include a son, Angelo M. Munoz and his wife, Patricia, of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Andrea F. Scott and Michael J. Munoz; and two great grandchildren, Rebecca and Sean Scott.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Tuesday in St. Therese's Catholic Church by the Rev. Robert L. Cummins. A reception will follow in the church social hall. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Smithtown, N.Y. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements.

The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorial donations be made to Oasis Social Ministry, 1020 High St., Portsmouth, Va. 23704.

Joyce F. Rittenberry

PORTSMOUTH -- Joyce Foster Rittenberry, 71, died Sept. 4, 1998, in Roanoke.

She was a native of Worcester, Mass., and the widow of Albert James Rittenberry. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her six daughters, Alberta Scott of Blueridge, Robin Whitley and Debra Lewis, both of Chesapeake, Cheryle Houck of Norfolk, and Kathleen Davis and Melissa Rittenberry, both of Portsmouth; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Robert F. Cofield Jr. The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. to receive friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, or the Liver Foundation.

James D. Sellers

PORTSMOUTH -- James Dewey Sellers, 89, of the 5000 block of Lake Circle Drive, died Aug. 31, 1998. A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Meadowbrook Mausoleum Chapel. Baker- Foster Funeral Home is in charge.

Sue A. Billups

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Sue Ann Billups, 77, of the 5600 block of Aragon Drive, died Aug. 31, 1998, in Bayside Sentara Hospital.

A native of Norfolk, Ms. Billups was a widow. She retired as a housekeeper and was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church.

She is survived by her two daughters, Alberta Wright and Betty Branch, both of Virginia Beach; three sons, Lawrence Billups and Clarence Billups, both of Virginia Beach, and Herbert Billups of Norfolk; one sister, Alice Bell Casten of Norfolk; one brother, Dennis Watkins of Virginia Beach; 31 grandchildren; 65 great- grandchildren; and six great-great- grandchildren.

A funeral will be held Tuesday at noon in Morning Star Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. C.H. Williams. Burial will be in Betty Jones Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services Inc. is handling arrangements.

Cammie O. Ligon

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Cammie Olive Ligon died peacefully Sept. 4, 1998, at Virginia Beach General Hospital surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Durham, N.C., she was the loving daughter of Helen Olive Berry and the late Booker Olive. Cammie graduated from Durham High School in 1960 and received her bachelor's degree in Education in 1965 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Cammie began teaching in the Virginia Beach School System in 1965 at John B. Dey Elementary School. She received her master's degree in 1978 from Old Dominion University. Cammie served as a reading diagnostician for the Virginia Beach School System for 12 years and was recently the reading resource teacher at Tallwood Elementary.

Cammie was the treasurer of the Virginia Beach Reading Council. She was a member of the Alpha Rho Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the Virginia Beach Colonial Circle of the International Order of the King's Daughters, and the ``Millionairesses" Investment Club.

Cammie is survived by her husband of 19 years, Capt. Samuel Ligon (SC) USN Ret.; her mother, Helen Berry of Virginia Beach; a stepbrother, Michael Berry of Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepsister, Sharon Brace of Evansville, Ind.; and two stepchildren, Samantha Stenger of Kennesaw, Ga., and Colin Ligon of Fairfax, Va.

The family will receive friends Monday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Maplewood Cemetery, Durham, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Catch 'Em in the Cradle, Virginia Beach Reading Council, 421 Thalia Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23452.

Lavolia Frye
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Lavolia Frye, 72, of the 3000 block of Blitz Court, died Sept. 3, 1998, at her residence.
A native of Dayton, Ohio, she was the widow of Alfred H. Frye.

Survivors include one daughter, Valarie E. Frye-Ramsey; one adopted daughter, Darlene C. Frye; one adopted son, Alfred N. Frye Jr.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Steve Peacock. Burial will we be in Quantico National Cemetery. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Monday. Family and friends will assemble at 3056 Blitz Court.

Mary S. Goodman
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Min.Mary Skinner Speller Goodman, of Daniel Smith Road, went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 2, 1998.
Mary Goodman was born on Feb. 20, 1909, to the late David and Classie Skinner of Hertford, N.C. She was a loving, kind, caring, and wonderful wife as well as a mother. As a proud grand-, great- and great-great-grandmother, she shared her many years of wisdom. She was a native of Hertford, N.C., when she met the late Alfred James Speller. She later married him and raised 10 children, including James, Robert, Queenie, Wilder, Roxanna Johnson, Sweetie Gardner, Bernice Sessoms, and Catherine Wiggins. She later remarried Jessie J. Goodman on Oct. 11, 1975. She was married 23 long, beautiful years. She was a Minister of God and a faithful member of The Church of Christ Apostolic Faith.

Those left to cherish her sweet memory are her husband, Jessie Goodman; daughters; sons; her sister, Clara S. Reid of Norfolk; and a host of grand-, great- and great-great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all.

A funeral will be conducted on Tuesday at noon at New St. John AME Church, Rock Creek Lane, Virginia Beach, by Elder Antonio Gardner. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Southside Chapel, Berkley Avenue, is handling arrangements. Family and friends will assemble at 5527 Daniel Smith Road, Virginia Beach, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. for the funeral procession to the church.

James P. Sadler

VIRGINIA BEACH -- James Pearce Sadler, 86, a prominent business and civic leader, died Sept. 5, 1998, in his Virginia Beach home.

Mr. Sadler was born in Raleigh, N.C., moving to Virginia at a young age. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, and attended North Carolina State University. He served as a cadet in the United States Merchant Marines, sailing 18 trips across the North Atlantic.

Upon returning from sea, Jim joined Southern Materials in 1935. After retiring in 1960 as senior vice-president, he remained on Southern Materials' board until 1962 when it was sold to Lone Star. Jim became involved in several business ventures, realizing retirement was not for him. In 1964 he founded Sadler Materials Corporation.

In 1971 Jim was selected First Citizen of Virginia Beach for his devoted service to his community. In 1974 he was chosen as the first King Neptune of the City of Virginia Beach. This event was founded to pull a struggling city together and gain identity. Jim Sadler's numerous civic contributions afforded him these two deserving honors.

Jim was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach, past president of the Chamber of Commerce, served two three-year terms on the City Industrial Development Authority. He was a founder of Cape Henry Collegiate School, a founding member of the Tidewater Artificial Reef Development Association and Virginia Beach Radio Station WBOF. He was a member emeritus of the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad Foundation, a past Board member of the Virginia Beach General Hospital and First Virginia Bank. He was a past member of the Princess Anne Country Club and the Engineers Club of Hampton Roads. In the early 60's, Jim saved Upper Wolfsnare Mansion for the Princess Anne Historical Society.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Dr. Susan F. Sadler; his five daughters and their husbands, Sandra and Corydon Baylor of Virginia Beach, Betty James and Jim Fuller of Orlando, Fla., Sue and Jack Morris of Virginia Beach, Michaele and Terry Lucas of Tacoma, Wash., Lane and Joseph Walsh of Philadelphia, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Kathryn Baylor, Kimberly Baylor, Julia Baylor, Jacquline Gerhardt, Cameron Johnson, James Lucas, Lane Lucas, and James P. Walsh; two great-grandchildren, Taylor Gerhardt and Griffin Gerhardt; a sister, Sarah Sadler Woods of Virginia Beach; his brother Joseph Sadler and his wife, Virginia Sadler, of Virginia Beach; their two sons, George Sadler and James Sadler; and daughter, Roberta Sadler.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery by the Reverend John Jordan. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 945, Virginia Beach, Va. 23451, or charity of your choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Marie M. Widener

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Marie M. Widener, 83, of the 5600 block of Banbury Court died Sept. 3, 1998. She was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.

Mrs. Widener is survived by her daughters, Maureen A. Richardson of Virginia Beach and Phyllis Widener of Florida; her son, William D. Widener of North Carolina; her sister, Ann Smith; and her grandchildren, Maureen and Michael Virgin of Florida, William Widener Jr. of North Carolina, and Brandy Richardson of Virginia Beach.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. A service will be conducted at the funeral home Tuesday at 10 a.m. Interment at Rosewood Memorial Park will follow.

Joe S. Ricks Sr.

SUFFOLK -- Joe Sam Ricks Sr., 76, died Sept. 4, 1998, in Obici Hospital.

A native of Southampton County, he was the son of the late David Crockett and Blaime Parker Ricks. Mr. Ricks was retired from Tidewater Wholesale.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Doyle Ricks; his daughters, JoAnn Barden of Daytona, Fla., Peggy McNicol of Phenix City, Ala.; his sons, Joe Sam Ricks Jr. of Malone, N.Y., Jerry Ricks and Charles T. Ricks, both of Suffolk; 16 grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and a sister, Mary R. Babb of Courtland. He was predeceased by two sons, John B. Ricks Sr. and Johnnie Reed Ricks.

A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by the Rev. William Ricks. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home on Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Wallace R. Crocker

SMITHFIELD -- Wallace R. Crocker, 72, passed away Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, after a short illness. He was a lifelong resident of Smithfield and a member of Benn's United Methodist Church.

Mr. Crocker retired as an outside machinist from Newport News Shipbuilding. He was an Army veteran, having served during World War II, and a 43-year member of the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, in addition to being a devoted father to his children.

Mr. Crocker was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelia C. Anderson. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edith ``Pat" Mauney Crocker; his sons, Randy Crocker, Neal Crocker and David Crocker; his daughters, Diane C. Bray and Terry C. Watts; grandchildren, Stacy, Chris, Randolph, Kendall, Kellie, Daniel and Dana; and one great-grandson, Timmy.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Luke's Memorial Park by the Rev. William M. White. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the family residence, 507 Bailey Ave., Smithfield. Memorial donations can be made to Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, Va. 23431-0097 or Benn's United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 14571 Benns Church Blvd., Smithfield, Va. 23430. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is handling arrangements.

Patty A. King

FRANKLIN -- Patty Alston King, 79, of the 32300 block of Walters Highway, died Sept. 5, 1998, at her home after a long illness. Born in Essex, N.C., she was the daughter of Gideon Branch Alston and Nancy Elizabeth Crawley, and had been married to Edward Gray King for 51 years. She was also a member of the Pine Grove Assembly of God in Windsor.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Jewel Faison and Vanessa Jones, both of Carrsville, Jackie Jones of Suffolk, and Patsy King of Richmond; two sons, John King of South Hill and Cecil King of Carrsville; one brother, Eugene Alston of Hollister, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Allen of Petersburg, and Bernie Robinson of Darlington, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Pine Grove Assembly of God with the Rev. Steve Bradshaw and the Rev. Tom Grazioso officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Arcola, N.C. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Branch Funeral Home, 839 Jackson St., Roanoke Rapids, N.C. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to South Hampton Memorial Hospital Hospice, 102 N. Mechanic St., Franklin, Va. 23851.

Heidi H. Cox

KILL DEVIL HILLS -- Heidi Holland Cox, 21, died Sept. 3, 1998, as a result of an automobile accident near Stumpy Point, N.C.

A native of Hyde County, she was born Oct. 8, 1976, in Belhaven, N.C. She was a graduate of Mattamuskeet School, Class of 1994, an avid pet lover, and worked at Charlotte's Web in Kill Devil Hills as a pet caregiver. She was a member of Middletown Christian Church.

She is survived by her mother, Maybell Holland Cox Stevens of Kill Devil Hills; her father, Joe Redden Cox of Route No. 1, Engelhard; her paternal grandmother, Nell Cox of Route No. 1, Engelhard (Middletown Community); and a sister, Heather Cox Etheridge of Manteo.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Middletown Christian Church. Scott Sukeforth will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Nell Cox in the Middletown Community. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter.

Virginia S. McLeod

CAMDEN -- Virginia Sawyer McLeod, 72, of the 400 block of Whitehall Road, died Sept. 5, 1998. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in New Hollywood Cemetery. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, is in charge.

S. Allen VanLandingham

ROPER -- S. Allen VanLandingham, 82, of Roper, N.C., formerly of Norfolk, died unexpectedly Sept. 3, 1998, in Fairfax County, Va.

Born in Heath Springs, S.C., on Dec. 14, 1915, Mr. VanLandingham was the son of the late Cleland S. and Emily Barfield VanLandingham. He was a retired building contractor in both the Norfolk, Va., and Washington County, N.C., areas. He was a member of the Perseverance Masonic Lodge No. 59, AF & AM, the Washington County Shrine Club, and a Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 281, Columbia, N.C. He had served as a former member of the Washington County Hospital Board of Directors.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Marjorie Deshields VanLandingham of the home; three sons, Shelby W. Harrod Sr. of Chesapeake, Michael L. Harrod of Portland, Mass., and Kenneth R. Harrod of Elizabeth City; one sister, Ruby Keller of Williamston; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Scuppernong Church of Christ near Creswell, N.C., with Mr. Mark Woolard officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Scuppernong Church of Christ Memorial Fund, c/o Mr. Mark Woolard, 3467 Davenport Fork Road, Creswell, N.C. 27928, or to the Columbia Chapter No. 281, OES, c/o Iris Jones, Secretary, Box 114, Columbia, N.C. 27925. Horner-Walker Funeral Home of Plymouth is in charge of arrangements.

Louisana B. Whidbee

ELIZABETH CITY -- Louisana Banks Whidbee, 82, of Route 3, Hertford, died Sept. 3, 1998. A funeral will be on Monday at 2 p.m. at Leigh's Temple A.M.E. Zion Church, Hertford. Walson Funeral Home is in charge.
