Shirley A. Barber

CHESAPEAKE -- Shirley Ann Barber, 57, of the 400 block of Gallbush Road, died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, in Chesapeake General Hospital.

Mrs. Barber was born in Columbia, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Henry and Emma Brickhouse Snell. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, James M. Barber; three daughters, Cathy Allen and her husband, George, of Chesapeake, Robin Hesse and her husband, Louis, of Burgaw, N.C., Teresa Leary and her husband, Albert, of Moyock, N.C.; a son, James M. Barber Jr., and his wife, Kim, of Chesapeake; her grandchildren, Brandon Hesse and Jonathan Hesse, both of Burgaw, Michael and Courtney Barber, both of Chesapeake, and Bryan Leary of Moyock; sister-in-law, Leta Chappelle of Virginia Beach; and her nephew, Robert Reed of Virginia Beach.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, with the Rev. Daniel Steinman officiating. Interment will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Oliver E. Bennett Jr.

CHESAPEAKE -- Oliver E. Bennett Jr., 68, of the 700 block of Gainsborough Court, answered the call from God Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, in Chesapeake General Hospital.

Mr. Bennett was born in Penacook, N.H., and was the son of Oliver E. and Lily Rose Brailey Bennett. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Janet M. Phelps of Portsmouth and Catherine Brickhouse of Harbenger, N.C.; three sons, Oliver E. Bennett III and James A. Bennett, both of Chesapeake and Frank Brinson of Richmond; a brother, Gordon Bennett of Florida; sisters, Barbara Lent of New York, Muriel Demaria of Arizona, Bernice Lamanozie, Doris Mathrews and Virginia Spooner, all of New Hampshire; and eight grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Great Bridge Church of God with Pastor Randy Wooden officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Great Bridge Church of God, 1280 Bells Mill Road, Chesapeake VA 23320, or the American Cancer Society, Chesapeake Unit, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk VA 23513.

Inez Sherrill

CHESAPEAKE -- Inez Sherrill, 87, of the 1600 block of Cardigan Ave., died Aug. 31, 1999.

She is survived by four daughters, Iris Jennings of Chesapeake, Linda Smith of Norfolk, Gilda Jennings of Oxon Hill, Md., and Myra Sanderson of Virginia Beach; two sons, Johnny Burfoot Jr. of Homestead, Fla., and Keith Sherrill of Chicago; three brothers, Clyde Sherrill Sr., Walter Sherrill Sr. of Chesapeake and Ernest Sherrill of Philadelphia; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral will be held at noon Monday at First Baptist Westmunden, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends for remembrance and visitation Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services Inc.

Jamarae' D. Buford

NORFOLK -- Jamarae' Deon Buford, infant son of Carlos Buford and Joy Snell, passed away Aug. 31, 1999, in a local hospital.

Survivors include one sister, Janiyah Lewis; two brothers, Romante' Roseboro and Jaquon Snell; a paternal great-grandmother, Rachel C. Harris of Canton, Miss.; and one uncle, Jonnie Roseboro.

Services will be held at a later date. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach chapel, is handling arrangements.

Melvin A. Burwell

NORFOLK -- Melvin ``Sarge" Andrew Burwell of the 1200 block of W. 40th St. died Sept. 2, 1999, at his residence. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel.

Lola M. Davenport

NORFOLK -- Lola Marie Davenport, 33, passed away on Sept. 3, 1999. Services are private. Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, is in charge.

Charlotte P. Acker

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Charlotte Dawson Phillips Acker, 74, of the 800 block of Romney Lane, died Sept. 2, 1999, at a local hospital.

Born in Lenoir County, N.C., she was employed in Virginia and North Carolina and retired as a registered nurse. She was a member of Suburban Christian Church. She was a beloved wife, caring, loving mother, grandmother and true friend who will be remembered and missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was the widow of James B. Acker Jr. and is survived by three sons, James B. Acker III and his wife, Lois, and George C. Acker and his wife, Lynn, all of Virginia Beach, Lt. Col. Mark A. Acker and his wife, Esther, of Fort Bragg, N.C.; two sisters, Laura Goodwin of North Carolina and Frances Coltrane of Virginia; two brothers, John C. Phillips of North Carolina and T. Pete Phillips of Ohio; and five grandchildren, James B. Acker IV of Virginia Beach, Christopher J. and Brandon T. Acker, both of Fort Bragg, Kimberly M. Acker and Greg Lee, both of Virginia Beach.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at her home Monday following the service.

Woody Arline

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A.W. ``Woody" Arline, beloved brother of Bea, made his transition in Greenville, N.C., on Aug. 27, 1999.

He was preceded in life eternal by his parents, Meg and Woodie Arline Sr.; his brother, Dr. Jim Arline; and his Aunt ``Do" Gainfort. Formerly of Raleigh, Baltimore, and Richmond, Woody lived in Virginia Beach with his brother-in-law Chuck Weigand and nephew Ryan. He is also survived by his other nephews and nieces, Chris, Patrick, Katherine and Rebecca; and sister-in-law, Sherry Arline.

A private memorial service officiated by his sister, the Rev. Bea Arline, will be held at 1 p.m. today. Friends are invited to join the family afterward at 2 p.m. at 1725 N. Woodhouse in Virginia Beach for a time of remembrance and celebration of his life.

Blessed be Woody. You are loved and missed.

Delia L. Ermita

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Delia Lumen Ermita, 56, of the 2500 block of Cantwell Road, died Sept. 2, 1999, at a local hospital.

Born in Legaspi City, Philippines, she was a material management accountant with Lake Taylor Hospital. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church; Bicol Association of Tidewater; Olongapo City Association of Tidewater; Baguio City Association of Tidewater; and was very active at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where she was serving as a eucharistic minister.

She is survived by her husband, Joven E. Ermita; two daughters, Jocelyn Ermita and Jennifer Ermita, all of Virginia Beach; and a sister, Merlene Lumen of the Philippines.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church by Monsignor Thomas J. Caroluzza. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today and Sunday at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.

Joseph L. Johnson Jr.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Joseph Leo Johnson Jr., 75, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at his daughter's home in Arlington, Va.

Born in 1924, in Brookline, Mass., he was the son of Joseph Leo Johnson and Katherine McCallion. He moved with his family to Virginia Beach from New York City in 1967, when he was appointed trust officer at Virginia National Bank in Norfolk. He served in the U.S. Naval Air Corp. as a radioman during World War II.

Mr. Johnson was married for 37 years to Barbara Pasour Johnson, who passed away in June. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Katherine and John M. DiConsiglio of Arlington, Va.; son Shepherd Pasour Johnson of Virginia Beach; grandson Joseph Albert DiConsiglio; sister Barbara Anne Johnson of Millis, Mass.; and sister and brother-in-law, Patricia P. and Harcourt R. Burns of Kinston, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances in his name may be made to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad. A memorial ceremony will be held at the convenience of the family.

Noel V. Johnson

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Noel Vincent Johnson, 72, passed away on Sept. 3, 1999.

Mr. Johnson was a retired Navy veteran with service in World War II and the Korean War. He belonged to VFW Post 392 and the Fleet Reserve Association.

He was also a field engineer with Ingersoll-Rand for more than 10 years.

Survivors include his loving wife, Theresa M. Johnson; four sons, Don, Neil, Paul and Eric; a daughter, Noelle; a brother, Julius; and five grandchildren, Theresa, Nicole, Amber, Jill and Adam.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Plaza Rescue Squad.

Dorothy A. Pottschmidt

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Dorothy A. Pottschmidt, 80, died suddenly Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at a local hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Wiliam H. Pottschmidt.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of the late Donald and Hazel Hanson. She moved with her family to Indianapolis, Ind., where she met her husband. During their years together, they lived throughout the Midwest, Italy and England. After his retirement, they lived in Gainesville, Ga., for many years. They were active members of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gainesville. Three years ago Mrs. Pottschmidt moved to Virginia Beach to be near her daughter, Dorothy Boudell and her husband, Gene. She then moved to live with her daughter and husband in their home in the Riverton section of Virginia Beach.

Throughout her long life she followed her artistic instincts producing many oil paintings. She was also involved in craftwork for her home and church. She was an avid reader of mysteries. Her church faith and family were always an integral part of her life. She was an inspiration and role model for all her family.

She leaves to mourn her death and celebrate her life, four daughters, Dorothy A. Boudell and her husband, Gene, of Virginia Beach, Shirley A. Duez and her husband, Robert, of Pana, Ill., Cynthia K. Johnson of Downers Grove, Ill., and Patricia L. Gustafson and her husband, Roger, of Belvidere, Ill.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Gene Faust and his wife, Sally, of Houston, Texas. Survivors also include a brother-in-law, Raymond Pottschmidt and his wife, Eleanor, of Indianapolis; sister-in-law, Helen Emmeluan of Indianapolis; sister-in-law, Evelyn Royer and her husband, Paul. Many nieces and nephews also survive her. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Heather Jones.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church, Norfolk, with the Rev. Dr. Sidney K. Nelson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach. The family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mary L. Stokes

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mary Lyall Lane Stokes, 101, of Brighton Gardens Retirement Home, Virginia Beach, and formerly of Lakewood, Norfolk, died Sept. 1, 1999.

Mrs. Stokes was the widow of Percy Bethel Stokes, M.D., Norfolk physician and surgeon. She was born March 22, 1898, at ``Brookside," Mount Vernon Springs, N.C., to Leon T. Lane and Maude Foust Lane and was the first granddaughter of John Randolph Lane, renowned colonel of the famous North Carolina Twenty-Sixth Regiment. She owned, bred, trained and rode Tennessee walking horses throughout her youth. After graduating with honors in 1921 from Greensboro College for Women, she married Dr. Stokes and moved to Norfolk. She lived most of her life in the Edgewater and Lakewood neighborhoods of Norfolk. An ardent gardener and horticulturist, she valued her participation in the Edgewater and Lakewood Garden Clubs and the Norfolk Botanical Gardens.

She was a loyal member of Royster Presbyterian Church and a devout student of the Holy Bible. Memberships included the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, the Princess Anne Country Club, The Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Daughters of the Confederacy. Lyall Stokes enjoyed her many friends and remained a genuine source of pleasure to each member of her large family. She preserved a keen intellect, wit, humor, and love to the very end of a long, happy, productive and eventful life.

Survivors include her two sons, Jack Bethel Stokes, Esq., Thomas Lane Stokes, M.D., and his wife, Martha K. Stokes; her sister, Eugenia Lane Reitzel of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren, Thomas Lane Stokes Jr. and his wife, Selina Basnight Stokes, John Randolph Stokes, Esq., and his wife, Kelly Outten Stokes, Esq., Gordon Kavanaugh Stokes, M.D., and his wife, Kerri MacPherson Stokes, M.D., and Ann Pearce Stokes and her husband, James Robert Burns Morrison III, of Norfolk; nine great-grandchildren, Thomas Lane Stokes III, Mary Lyall Stokes, John Randolph Stokes Jr., Samuel Outten Stokes, Edward Lane Stokes, Gordon Kavanaugh Stokes Jr., Ian Alexander Stokes, Ann Burns Stokes Morrison and Joseph James Lane Morrison, all of Norfolk.

Services will be held Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church, Newport Avenue, Norfolk, at 1:30 p.m. Private burial at the Mount Vernon Springs, N.C. Presbyterian Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Mary Lyall Lane Stokes Memorial Music Fund of Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling arrangements.
