Viola B. Armstrong
SMITHFIELD -- Viola Bristow Armstrong, 81, of Jefferson Drive, died Sept. 1, 1998, in Newport News.
A native of Portsmouth, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Phillip Bristow and Nellie Whitson Bristow. She retired as a registered nurse from Portsmouth General Hospital and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Portsmouth. She graduated from King's Daughters School of Nursing, Class of 1939.
Survivors include her husband, Harvey S. Armstrong; a daughter, Linda Armstrong Bean of Suffolk; four sisters, Alene Beam and Charlotte Padmos, both of Denver, Myrtle Grimes of Chesapeake, and Marjorie Benton of Portsmouth; and a grandchild, Jennifer L. Bean. She was preceded in death by a brother, Benjamin Phillip Bristow Jr.
A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, by the Rev. Philip J. Parker. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery.

Frankie Everett
FRANKLIN -- Mrs. Frankie Everett of the 300 block of Hall St. died Sept. 2, 1998.
Born in Southampton County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Betty Rose and the late Bonnie Rose. She was retired from St. Regis Paper Co. with 28 years of service and was a member of First Baptist Church in Franklin.
The widow of Boone Everett, she is survived by her daughter, Betty E. Turner of Franklin; a son, Earl A. Everett; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two daughters, Iona E. Rutland and Bonnie Everett.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Hall Street, by the Rev. Henry Blunt. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery, Franklin. Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

MANTEO -- Rosemary Gartland Midgett, 59, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at her residence.
Mrs. Midgett, a native of Bayone, N.J., was a retired hairdresser. She was a past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge No. 52 of Manteo, past president of the Dare County Shrinettes and attended Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late James and Veronica Donnelly Gartland and the widow of Boyd Midgett.
Mrs. Midgett is survived by a son, James Boyd Midgett of Manteo; a daughter, Patricia A. ``Pam" Midgett of Manteo, two stepdaughters, Deborah M.
Johnson of Sewell, N.J., and Barbara ``Laney" Rice of Tuckerton, N.J.; a brother, James J. Gartland of Tuckerton, N.J.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Goodwin officiating. Burial will follow in the Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence and requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to hospice or a cancer foundation.

HOPEWELL -- Geraldine Lewis Alley, 66, of Hopewell entered into eternal life on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg.
She was born in Dinwiddie County and was the daughter of the later Raymond Edward and Edna Jeter Lewis. Mrs. Alley was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond G. Alley Jr.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Phillip M. and Margaret Alley of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Susan A. Warthan; two grandchildren, Sherry L. and Brad P. Warthan, all of Hopewell; two sisters, Arlene Blanton of Hopewell, Cecile Pierson and a brother, Claiborne R. Lewis Sr., both of Chesterfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, with the Rev. William E. Blanton III officiating. Burial will follow in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg.
Ernest L. Grigsby
SPOTSYLVANIA -- Ernest L. Grigsby, 53, formerly of Norfolk, died Sept. 1, 1998, at Lake Ridge, Va.
Born in Boise, Idaho, he was the son of the late Zach T. and Jenny Grigsby, formerly of Boise. He had retired as a master chief petty officer from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Grigsby; a daughter, Jennifer Cagni and her husband, Michael Cagni, of Norfolk; two sons, Ernest A. Grigsby, James R. Grigsby and his wife, Debra, all of Norfolk; three sisters, Betty, Peggy and Bonnie; six brothers, John, Walter, Jack, Jim, Glen and Dan; and three grandchildren, Shawn and Zachary Cagni, and Kyle Mason, all of Norfolk. He was predeceased by a brother, George Grigsby.
A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hollomon-
Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood. Burial will be private at a later date. The family will receive friends from noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. -- Michael A. Favro, 55, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 25, 1998.
He is survived by his wife, Mollie Holland-Favro; son, Mark Favro; daughters, Michelle Corder, Melissa Favro and Meranda Favro; grandchildren, Richard Corder Jr., Clayton Michael Corder and Mollie Corder.

BALTIMORE -- Helen V. Copeland Downing, 74, of the 2100 block of Homewood Ave., died Sept. 1, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore.
Born in Norfolk County (Gilmerton), Va., she was a retired self-employed cosmetologist and a member of New Antioch Baptist Church in Baltimore.
Survivors include her husband, T.G. Downing Sr.; two sons, Robert G. Downing of Baltimore and Thomas G. Downing Jr. of Garner, N.C.; two sisters, Olivia C. Sorrell and Ethel B. Parker, both of Chesapeake; a brother, Roland Copeland of Chesapeake; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends, including Anita M. Hall, who was like a daughter.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at First Baptist Church Gilmerton, Chesapeake, with the Rev. Edward
Smith presiding and eulogy by Pastor Patt Allen Sr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday. The family will be at the home of her sister, Olivia C. Sorrell, 112 Alice St., Chesapeake, and will assemble there for the procession.
