Virginia C. Shields
Virginia Crews Shields, 88, of Manteo, N.C., and formerly of Bassett, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Nags Head, N.C.
She was born in Bassett on Jan. 2, 1918, to Johnny Burle Crews and Bethie Turner Crews.
She was a member of Western Branch Baptist Church in Portsmouth.
Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Shields Edwards; two granddaughters; two sisters, Jessie Crews Wilson of Martinsville and Barbara Crews Stone of Bassett; three brothers, Clinton Crews of Bassett, Ronnie Crews of Ridgeway and Donnie Crews of Richmond.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bassett Funeral Service with Brother Harry Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in Shady Rest Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Anna L. Branch
The funeral for Anna Lou Pauley Branch, 73, of Ridgeway, who died Dec. 7, 2004, was held Thursday at Collins Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Karen Shelton officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Robert Malloy, Mike Powell, Steven Powell, Matt Powell II, Jeff Allen, Marty Cline, Justin Branch and Josh Jeffries.

Piper Cox Jr.
The funeral for Piper Cox Jr., 73, of Martinsville, who died Dec. 6, 2004, was held Thursday at the Pentecostal Assembly Building with the Rev. Benjamin Redd officiating. Burial was in Meadow Christian Church cemetery with military honors performed by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard. The flag presentation was made by a captain from the 2174 Army Division of Roanoke.
Pallbearers were Zack Kyle, Conley Kyle, William Kyle, Walter Kyle, Kirby McMillan and Willie C. Johnson Jr.
Hines Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

Bettie C. Fulp
The funeral for Bettie Alice Chitwood Fulp, 89, of 86 Meadow Lane, Collinsville, who died Dec. 8, 2004, at the Stanleytown Health Care Center, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church. The Rev. Gene Chitwood and Minister Lawrence Harris will officiate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Pocahontas Church and other times at the home.
She was born on March 12, 1915, in Franklin County, to Alexander Chitwood and Della Altice Chitwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond J. Fulp; seven brothers, Richard, Johnny, William, Thomas, Rufus, A.P. and George Chitwood; and three sisters, Mary Thacker, Martha Collins and Ethel Hubbard.
She retired from Bassett Walker Knitting Co. with 25 years of service, and she was a member of Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Anderson of Wilmington, N.C., Norma Jean Handy of Fieldale and Betty Lou Deal of Martinsville; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Bassett Funeral Services in Bassett is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Gillespie
Ruby Gillespie, 79, of Martinsville, and formerly of 2871 Knob Church Road, Henry, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare in Martinsville.
Funeral arrangements will be made at Collins Funeral Services in Bassett.

Lucy "Mattie" Hopkins
A graveside service for Lucy Ann "Mattie" Hopkins, 90, of Martinsville, who died Dec. 6, 2004, was held Thursday at New Spoon Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Charles R. Tomlinson and Donald Ashby officiating.
Pallbearers were her nephews and friends.
Community Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

Payton E. Jeffries
EDEN, N.C. -- Payton Edward Jeffries, 91, of Eden, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Morehead Nursing Center.
He was born in Rockingham County on Dec. 18, 1912, to John Henry Jeffries and Lily Belle Murphy Jeffries. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Jeffries Jones; six brothers, three sisters; and three grandchildren.
He retired from Fieldcrest Miles where he worked for 50 years, was a member of the YÕs Men Club for a number of years and the El Bethel Ruritan Club, and had been voted "Outstanding Member" of the El Bethel Community Club.
He was a member of the First Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Madge Bowman Jeffries of Eden; a son, Douglas Jeffries of Florida; a daughter, Lillie Mae Merriman of Spencer, Va.; two brothers, Curtis Jeffries and Oliver Jeffries, both of Eden; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Church of the Brethren. Burial will follow in Overlook Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the First Church of the Brethren and other times at Eden Ridge on Kennedy Street in Eden.
Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Brethren, 730 Church St., Eden, N.C. 27288, Attn: Regular Budget Fund.
Fair Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lena Clark-Moore
Lena Taylor Clark-Moore, 89, formerly of Collinsville, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Easters Home For Adults in Amelia.
Norris Funeral Services and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Lois M. Warren
The funeral for Lois Miles Warren, 79, of Martinsville, who died Dec. 7, 2004, was held Thursday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services with the Rev. Keith Spangenberg officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Charles Harris, Richard Kelsey, Bud Philpott, Travis Bryant, Melvin Compton, Raymond Miles, Hugh Poole and Mike Pashley.

Joe Bowers Sr.
Joe Billy Bowers Sr., 96, of 2431 Appalachian Drive, Martinsville, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mayme Sexton Bowers; a daughter, Virginia Daphine Mitchell; and a son, Joe Billy Bowers Jr.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hope United Methodist Church.
Vaughn-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax is in charge of arrangements.

George L. Bowles
George Leonard Bowles, 85, of the Blue Ridge Rehab Center and formerly of 67 Pettie Road, Martinsville, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at the rehab center.
Hairston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
