Ralph Edwin Winesett Sr., 82, of Raleigh, N.C., died Tuesday, June 17, 2003.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 19, at 3 p.m. at the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel, Raleigh, N.C., with the Rev. Arlie McGarvey officiating.

He was born in Bland County, Va. He was retired from Greyhound Bus Lines as a driver after 35 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Cleveland and Eliza Maye Winesett; and a sister, Alta W. Woodard.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Rebecca James Winesett; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki Winesett and Todd Widner of Knightdale, N.C.; a son, Ralph Edwin Winesett Jr. of Creedmoor, N.C.; a sister, Eva Lois Winesett of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Billy T. Woodard of Troy, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Montlawn Memorial Park, Funerals and Cremations, in Raleigh, N.C., was in charge of the arrangements.

Albert Percy "Buster" Wilson

Albert Percy "Buster" Wilson, 69, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Thursday, May 8, 2003, in Richmond, Ind.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Retreat, Va., with Pastor Harvey Atkinson and Pastor Marty Stallard officiating. Interment was in the Black Lick cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, Va., and was a well-known Wythe County sheep farmer and sheep judge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Basil Wilson Jr. and Virginia Preston Wilson.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Lou Umberger Wilson; one son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Lisa Wilson of Rural Retreat, Va.; two grandchildren, Hunter Wilson and Eric Wilson, both of Rural Retreat, Va.; two sisters, Elizabeth Ann Wilson Bogle of Roanoke, Va., and Charlotte Wilson Orr of Wytheville, Va.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Nelda Umberger and Troutville, Va.; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Louise and Alan Walters of Wytheville, Va., and Juanita and Johnny Branscome of Max Meadows, Va.; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Black Lick cemetery Fund.

Josephine Kent

Josephine Kent, 61, of Bland, Va., died Sunday, June 15, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland, Va. Burial will be in the Mechanicsburg cemetery in the Mechanicsburg community of Bland County, Va.

She belonged to the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of Hollybrook, Va.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert K. Patton of Bland, Va.; and two sisters, Betsy Snider and Blanche Tester of Maryland.

Survivors include her mother, Ethel Dillow Patton of Max Meadows, Va.; two daughters and son-in-law, Camilla "Kandy" Kent, and Ginger and Mickey Armstrong, all of Max Meadows, Va.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Tammy Kent, and Richard W. Kent, all of Max Meadows, Va.; six grandsons, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 17, from 1 to 2 p.m. (service time) at the Newberry Funeral Home.

Nicole Dawn Smith

Nicole Dawn Smith, 26, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in McDowell County, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at the Morning Star Outreach Ministries Church in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Kennith Johnson and the Rev. Shelley Kyle officiating. Interment will be in the Murpheysville cemetery in Rural Retreat, Va.

She was preceded in death by her father, Alvin Smith.

Survivors include her mother, Peggy Smith of Wytheville, Va.; her boyfriend, Michael Taylor of Wytheville, Va.; one sister, Lisa Miller of Rural Retreat, Va.; one brother, Christopher Smith of Roanoke, Va.; two nieces, Akelia Smith and Tiera Lee, both of Wytheville, Va.; one nephew, Jalen France of Rural Retreat, Va.; several aunts and uncles, John Smith, Brenda Hash, Terry Price, Jean Smith, Jeffery Miller, Eric Miller, Charles Miller, Kenny Miller and Patricia Crockett; and several cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 16, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Freda Odum Spencer

Freda Odum Spencer, 79, of Max Meadows, Va., died Monday, June 9, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 12, at 1 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Richard Gregory officiating. Interment will be in the Archer-Spencer Family cemetery, Austinville, Va.

She was a member of the Glenwood United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Fred Spencer; her parents, Ira and Evelyn Lawless Odum; a sister, Hester Sizemore; and two brothers, Raymond Odum and Archie Odum.

Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia Hodge and Wayne McNeely of Barren Springs, Va., Elizabeth Dunford of Max Meadows, Va., Loretta and Doris Burnette of Woodlawn, Va., Kathy G. and Richard Parks of Rural Retreat, Va., and Sandy and David Smith of Poplar Camp section of Wythe County, Va.; a sister, Margie Marion of Cleveland, Ohio; special friends, Ethel and Archie Goad of Bedford, Va.; eight grandchildren, Robert Hodge, Tina Hodge, Martin Burnette, Jackie Armbrister, John Gregory, Kristi Adkins, Joanna Dunford and Christine Gravely; and nine great-grandchildren, Renee Armbrister, Tiffany Armbrister, Whitney Armbrister, Little Mitchell Armbrister, Chance Burnette, Faith Burnette, Alex Whalen, Baby Hodge and Autumn Burnette.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Grubb Funeral Home.

Virginia Pearl Finley Reed

Virginia Pearl Finley Reed, 61, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, May 23, 2003.

A memorial service will be held in Smyrna, Tenn.

She was born in Tennessee. She was a former clerk at Count's Drug Company.

She was preceded in death by her father, Frank Finley.

Survivors include her husband, Fillmore Reed; a son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Col. Jerry and Freida Reed of Mildenhall, England; her mother, Virgie McDowell of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Austin Reed and Leah Reed, both of Mildenhall, England; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Louise and Harold Weatherill of Mims, Fla., June Cagle of Gladesville, Tenn., and Ima Hagynemacher of Smyrna, Tenn.; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence and Naomi Finley of Shelbyville, Tenn., Charles and Brenda Finley of La Vergne, Tenn., and Fred and Laura Finley of Lowell, Ind.

Linnie Ann Stevens

Linnie Ann Stevens, 59, of Austinville, Va., died Monday, June 9, 2003, at the Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at the Coulson Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Russell Payne officiating. Burial will be in the Coulson cemetery.

She is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Alan Luper of Woodlawn, Va., Sandy and Terry Marshall of Max Meadows, Va., Vickey and Roger Mashburn of Hillsville, Va., Nancy and Kenneth Mitchell of Wytheville, Va., Donna and James Allison of Austinville, Va., and Loretta and Miguel Mendez of Hillsville, Va.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Christy Stevens of Laurel Fork, Va., Thomas and Inez Stevens of Manassas, Va., and Dale and Missy Stevens of Wytheville, Va.; two brothers, Edward VanDyke of Austinville, Va., and Bobby VanDyke of Christiansburg, Va.; three sisters, Carrie Smith of Hillsville, Va., Dixie Mitchell of Willis, Va., and Frances VanDyke of Austinville, Va.; several nieces and nephews; 27 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel.

Ruby Hardin Spence

Ruby Katherine Hardin Spence, 94, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, in Edgemont Center, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 17, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in the Lebanon Lutheran Church cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late James and Lettie Ann Hardin. She was a charter member of the Wilderness Road Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard B. Spence; a daughter, Patsy Ann Jordan; and a son, Bobby Gene Spence.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and A.M. Owens of Bristol, Va.; three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Margie Harden of Wytheville, Va., Billy Spence of Wytheville, Va., and Wayne and Ruth Spence of Glade Spring; a sister, Edna Mitchell of Wytheville, Va.; a special niece and friend, Shirley Hudson; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, May 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel or at the residence of David and Margie Hardin at any time.

William Junior Ratcliffe

William Junior Ratcliffe, 72, of Peppers Ferry Road, Wytheville, Va., died Monday, May 12, 2003.

Funeral service will be held Friday, May 16, at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church in Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Donald Drake officiating. Burial will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

He was the son of the late Elizabeth Mentoria Ratcliffe. He was a retired van driver for Econo Lodge, a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, an avid sign painter and a U.S. Marine veteran and the U.S. Army Reserve.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jackie F. Gravely.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Ratcliffe of Peppers Ferry Road, Wytheville, Va.; four daughters and son-in-law, Karen Ratcliffe Gravely of Graham's Forge section of Wythe County, Va., Teresa Ratcliffe Waddell, Andrea L. Ratcliffe, Sandra R. and Michael Wright, all of Peppers Ferry Road in Wytheville, Va.; one stepson, William Craig Shipwash of Franklin, Pa.; two stepchildren, William Craig Shipwash and Donna Ann Shipwash, both of Franklin, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Foster Gravely, Joshua William Gravely, Jordan Blake Gravely, Christopher Bradley Waddell, Joel Shipwash, Amanda Shipwash and Andrew Shipwash; and two great-grandchildren.

Johnny J. Wilson

Johnny J. Wilson, 73, of Portsmouth, Va., died Monday, May 26, 2003, in Elizabeth City, N.C.

A memorial service was held Friday, May 30, at 11 a.m. at Cradock United Methodist Church with Pastor Daniel G. Spaugh officiating. A graveside memorial service and inurnment will be held Saturday, June 14, at 11 a.m. in the Bland cemetery, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating.

He was a native of Greenville, N.C., and the son of the late George Washington and Bertha Forest Wilson. He was a retired truck driver for Nu-Car Carries Inc. and was a member of Cradock United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Dillow Wilson of the home; five sons, John M. Wilson and Robert W. "Bobby" Wilson, both of Chula Vista, Calif., Randy Wilson of Portsmouth, Va., Chris Wilson of Chesapeake, Va., and Jay Wilson of Waterlily, N.C; one half brother, Henry Heath of Robersonville, N.C; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wilson of Elizabethtown, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Calvin Stephen of Greenville, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Chris Wilson, Cindy Wilson, Robert Blair, Lyndsay Blair and Abraham Foltz.

Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel in Bland, Va., is in charge of the local arrangements.

Pearle Myers Blankenship

Pearle Myers Blankenship, 91, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Sunday, June 1, 2003, in the Edgemont Center, Wytheville, Va.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 3, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Retreat, Va., with Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Inurnment will be in the Mountain View cemetery at a later date.

She was born in Wythe County, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Martin "Pedie" Blankenship; and her parents, Thomas Gordon and Sara Bell Scott Myers.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Blanch Smith of Wytheville, Va.; six nieces, Constance Wilkie of St. Petersburg, Fla., Vivian L. Hampton, Pearle S. Lee and Patricia S. Huddle, all of Rural Retreat, Va., Joannie L. Harris of Martinsville, Va., and Mary S. Vaught of Speedwell, Va.; and 13 great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 3, from 10 to 11 a.m. (service time) at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Kenneth Wayne Gilman

Kenneth Wayne Gilman, 64, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, May 30, 2003.

Funeral service will be held Monday, June 2, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in the Lebanon Lutheran cemetery. American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct military graveside rites.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and was an active member of the American Legion Post No. 9.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Gilman; and a brother, William Gilman.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonita and Clinton Gordon of Charlotte, N.C., and Connie and Doug Hancock of Rural Retreat, Va.; his mother, Laura Corvin Gilman of Wytheville, Va.; three grandchildren, Laura Jones, Denise Hall and Timmy Hall, all of Rural Retreat, Va.; and a great-grandson, Austin Six.
