Vertie Alice Melton, 79, of the Foster Falls section of Max Meadows, Va., died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in the Lewis-Gale Medical Center, Salem, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 2:30 p.m. at the Foster Falls United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Waller officiating. Interment will follow in the Foster Falls cemetery.

She was born in Greenbrier, W.Va. She was a retired pediatric nursing assistant with the Pulaski General Hospital, Pulaski, Va. She was a member of the Foster Falls United Methodist Church for more than 50 years where she served as Sunday school teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sparrell J. and Myrtle Mabry Viars; a son, Roger Lee Melton; a daughter, Betty Lou Melton; and a brother, James Viars.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Robert Lee Melton of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Patricia Melton of Richmond, Va., and Leon and Mary Ann Melton of Salem, Va.; five granddaughters and spouses, Kerri Lynn Melton, Sonya Annette Melton, Amber Michelle Melton, Stephanie and Tommy Helmick, and Sarah E. and Jonathan Bayer; one great-grandson, Thomas Leon Helmick; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard and Violet Viars of Bassett, Va., Carl and Bertie Viars of Pulaski, Va., Frank and Audrey Viars of Mooresville, N.C., Bobby and Patty Viars of Thomasville, N.C., and O'Dell and Frances Viars of Pulaski, Va.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Estelle and Burton Riggins of Hillsville, Va., and Sue and Bud Deveney of Florence, Ore.; a special aunt, Alma Hershey of Princeton, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home, Austinville, Va., or at the residence at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Foster Falls United Methodist Church.

Sidney Ray Mitchell

Sidney Ray Mitchell, 72, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at his residence.

Graveside memorial services will be held Sunday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m. in the Mechanicsburg cemetery, Bland County, Va.

He was a member (retired) IBEW for 45 years and was corporal in the U.S. Army Air Corps 1947-1949 where he was an aircraft electrician.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Mae Williams Mitchell; his parents, Walter Homer and Bessie Lindamood Mitchell; and two brothers, Charles Thomas Mitchell and Walter Homer Mitchell II.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Connie Sue and Wayne Hurley of Vinton, Va., and Mary Annetta and Jeff Ferguson of Roanoke, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, Ray Anthony and Kathy Mitchell of Bland, Va., and Sidney Todd and Elizabeth Mitchell of Galax, Va.; grandchildren, Jeffery Allen Barbour, Charles Michael Nakhle, Christopher Ryan Ferguson, Jessica Kathleen Mitchell, Tanner Stuller, and Joshua Stuller; and great-grandchildren, Dylan Michael Nakhle and Jakob Spencer Nakhle.

Callie T. Shumate

Callie T. Shumate, 84, of Ashtabula, Ohio, formerly of Ivanhoe, Va., died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Hospice of Ashtabula, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home in Austinville, Va., with the Rev. Don Crockett officiating. Interment will be in Fairview United Methodist Church cemetery, Ivanhoe, Va.

She was born in 1918 in Ivanhoe, Va. She had lived in Ashtabula, Ohio, since 1944. She attended Edgewood Church of the Nazarene in Ashtabula, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Shumate, in 1980; her parents, Burtam and Lemme Bedwell Wright; one sister, Kathleen King; three brothers, Lorain Wright, Paul Wright and Kelly Wright; three grandchildren, Mack Kelly, Callie Mason and Robin Moore.

Survivors include nine children, Pam Ashley, Sally Shumate and David Wright, all of Ashtabula, Ohio, Barbara Jackson of Dangerfield, Texas, Harry Wright of Stockton, Texas, Jimmy Wright of Dallas, Texas, Emmett Wright and Freddie Wright, both of Irving, Texas, and C. Ritchie Wright of Duncanville, Texas; two brothers, Sherm Wright of Ivanhoe, Va., and Hershel Wright of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sisters, Dorothy Waller of Ivanhoe, Va., and Margaret Stoneman of Ashtabula, Ohio; 28 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Ashtabula County, 2420 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, OH 44004.

Mary Tolley

Mary Tolley, 90, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, in the Edgemont Center, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Don Scott officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, W.Va.

She was born in Wythe County, Va. She was a member of the Rosenbaum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church and had served as church treasurer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman W. Tolley; parents, Marion K. and Maude Stroup Crigger; a son, Donald J. Tolley; two sisters, Polly Mills and Lolly Sexton; and a brother, Paul Cregger.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Hobart White of Penhook, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Patsy Tolley of Rural Retreat, Va.; a sister, Betty Monahan of Wytheville, Va.; two brothers, Kelly Cregger of Grants, N.M., and James Cregger of Welch, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rosenbaum Chapel cemetery Fund.

Walter Clarence Horne

Walter Clarence "W.C." Horne, 85, of Sugar Grove, Va., died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, in the Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Blue Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. J. Scott Adkins officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

He was born in Smyth County, Va., the son of the late William Samuel and Hattie Amanda Dutton Horne. He was a member of Blue Springs United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Roy Horne; and his stepmother, Bessie Lou Bourne Horne.

Survivors include one brother, James Isaac Horne of Seattle, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Carolyn B. Horne of Sugar Grove, Va.; two nieces, Marilyn H. Cook and Susan H. Laforn, both of Roanoke, Va.; two nephews, Jim Horne of Marion, Va., and Mike Horne of Chilhowie, Va.; and two great-nephews, Michael Shane Horne and Michael Horne Jr.

The family suggests those who prefer may make memorials to the charity of their choice.

Freida J. Moore Fox

Freida J. Moore Fox, 75, of Ohio died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003.

Graveside service and burial will be Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m., in the East End cemetery, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Sam Rittenour and the Rev. Holly Phillips officiating.

Born in Wytheville, Va., she lived in the Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio area for the past 49 years and retired from the University of Akron, Ohio. She attended the Chapel in University Park in Akron, Ohio, was a member of Meade Avenue Christian Church, a former member of High St. Christian Church, and active in the Akron Metropolitan Hiking Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence S. Sr. and Pearl King Moore; and a brother, Clarence S. Moore Jr.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Richard W. Fox IV; a sister and brother-in-law, Frances M. and William B. Sprouse of Roanoke, Va.; a nephew, Randolph M. Sprouse of Ft. Worth, Texas; and other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 1 to 1:45 p.m. (service time) at Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va.

Myrtle Elizabeth Shupe Blevins

Myrtle Elizabeth Shupe Blevins, 66, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, in Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jody Blevins and the Rev. Walter Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat, Va.

She was born in Wythe County, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm Ernest Blevins; her parents, John Franklin and Minnie Katherine Burse Shupe; a daughter, Marlene Sult; a sister, Mary Margaret "Pee Wee" Shupe; and a brother, Harlow Shupe.

Survivors include two sons, Gary F. Anderson of Rural Retreat, Va., and Michael T. Anderson of Wytheville, Va.; one daughter, Candy Sue Rose of Wytheville, Va.; one sister, Bonnie Glass of Crewe, Va.; three brothers, Jimmy Shupe, William "Bill Tom" Shupe, and Jerry Shupe, all of Rural Retreat, Va.; and seven stepchildren, seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

William McKinney Black

William McKinney Black, age 49, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at his residence.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va.

He was the son of the late Sidney and Evelyn Hale Black.

He is survived by three sisters, Georgia Elizabeth Black and Susieanna Black, both of Wytheville, Va., and Pauline Cynthia Black of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers and sister-in-law, James T. Black of Tacoma, Wash., and Sidney and Linda Black Jr. of Wytheville, Va.; stepmother, Phyllis Black of Wytheville, Va.; several stepsisters, stepbrothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 24, from 1 to 2 p.m. (service time) at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Therron McKinnley Edwards

Therron McKinnley Edwards, 80, of Lead Mine Road, Austinville, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. at the River of Life Family Ministries, formerly the Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy, with the Rev. Larry Barnes and the Rev. Donald Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery, Poplar Camp, Va.

He was born in Wythe County, Va. He was a member of the Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy and was retired from Burlington Industries. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Grover King Post 1115, V.F.W. and had worked for Mt. Rogers for nine years after his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Millard M. and Rhoda Irene Edwards; two sisters, Thelma Ogle and Margie Viars; and one brother, Clinton Edwards.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Tedder Edwards of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Kim Edwards of Barren Springs, Va., and Danny and Wanda Edwards of Max Meadows, Va.; five grandchildren and spouses, Thelma and Alan Hines of Max Meadows, Va., Adam and Myra Edwards of Barren Springs, Va., Nick Edwards and Sam Edwards, both of Barren Springs, Va., and Heather Edwards of Max Meadows, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Hines and Joshua Hines; one sister, Eula Roberts of Bassett, Va.; one brother, Roy Edwards of Max Meadows, Va.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials donations to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 W. Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Mary Ruth Webb Hasley

Mary Ruth Webb Hasley, 76, of Wytheville, Va., died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services and interment will be held in Dickson, Tenn.

She was born in Dickson, Tenn., a daughter of the late Archie and Axie Burns Webb.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Eugene Hasley; a daughter, Sherron Jean Dean; a grandson, Steven Wayne Hasley; and a brother, Melvin Webb.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Vivian and Gerald Dunford of Austinville, Va.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Marie Hasley of Austinville, Va., Steven and Janet Hasley, Larry Hasley, and Garry and Sherry Hasley, all of Wytheville, Va.; two sisters, Elva Hodges of Dickson, Tenn., and Margaret Hodges of Southland, Mich.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, several great-stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, Oct. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the home of Steven and Janet Hasley at any time.

Lida Elsie Havens

Lida Elsie Havens, 92, of Bland, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital, Bluefield, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, Va., with the Rev. Donald White and the Rev. Timmy Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Shiloh cemetery.

She was born March 13, 1910, at Oakvale, W.Va. She was a member of the Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus William Havens; parents, James and Betty Blankenship Hughes; and two grandchildren.

Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law, Hale and Ola Havens of Independence, Ky., Raymond and Irma Havens, Edward and Marlene Havens, Dane and Jane Havens, and Garland and Mary Lee Havens, all of Bland County, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Jerry Yates of Fairview, N.C.; two brothers, Estil Hughes of Eggleston, Va., and Carson Hughes of Narrows, Va.; one sister, Nona H. Conley of Narrows, Va.; 23 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
