Nancy P. Miller Grubb

Nancy P. Miller Grubb, 64, of Crockett, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Haskett officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Lutheran Church cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Greenroad, Ky., a daughter of the late Tom and Martha Pittman Miller.

Survivors include her husband, James Richard Grubb of the home; one daughter, Bonnie G. Smith of Crockett; one son, Wesley Ellis Grubb of the U.S. Army in Baumholder, Germany; two grandchildren, Richard Eugene Smith and Brandi Nicole Smith; six sisters, Juanita Hutton and Lou Broughton, both of Washington, Mich., Romona Fisher of Cincinnati, Ohio, Liza Ivy of Caywood, Ky., Mary Hatfield of South Lyon, Mich., and Amanda Messer of Dearborn Heights, Mich.; two brothers, Harold Miller of Washington, Mich., and T.J. Miller of Seattle, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat is in charge of the arrangements.

Garland Benford Neel

Garland Benford Neel, 79, of Ceres, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 30, at 11 a.m. at the Red Oak Church with the Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Interment followed in the Red Oak cemetery.

He was born in Ceres, the son of the late Robert Sidney and Ollie Mae Crow Neel. He was a member of the Red Oak Union Church. He was a retired corrections officer with the Bland Correctional Center and a retired farmer.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Cralle; and a son, Harry F. Neel.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Kidd Neel of the home; two granddaughters, Stacey Neel of Fredericksburg, and Kirstie Neel of Mechanicsville; two grandsons, Shane Cralle and Darin Cralle, both of Marion; a son-in-law, Frank Cralle of Marion; two sisters, Shirley N. Repass of Wytheville, and Dare N. Stuart of Ceres; and special friends, Joe and Sue Lyerly of Garnite Quarry, N.C.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

William Franklin Surratt

William Franklin "Frank" Surratt, 88, of Austinville, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, in the Edgemont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Aug. 2, at 1:30 p.m. at the Austinville Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Joseph Harrison and the Rev. A.C. Ashford officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to service time.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late John Henry and Paige Dunford Surratt and was a member of the Austinville Pentecostal Holiness Church since 1942. He was a retired employee of the Wythe County Schools.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Martin Surratt; and two sisters, Mary Edwards and Sarah Pauley.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and William L. Cox of Austinville; two grandchildren and spouses, Richard L. and Susan R. Cox, Cynthia C. and Stephen Kemp, all of Richmond; four great-grandchildren, William Franklin Cox of the U.S. Navy, Cheryl E. Tinsley, Jonathan E. Tinsley, and Sara Michelle Tinsley, all of Richmond; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert H. and Stella Surratt of Pulaski; a niece and spouse, Martha and Archie Hodge of Roanoke; and a nephew and spouse, Ray and Brenda Surratt of Dublin.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home or at the residence of his daughter, Virginia Cox, at any time.

Willie H. Hopkins

Willie H. "Bill" Hopkins, 87, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Entombment followed in the Highland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Dublin.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Charles V. and Emma Collins Hopkins. He was the owner/operator of Hopkins Grocery until his retirement in 1976 and was a member of the Mountain Empire Antique Car Club.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Zeola H. Harrell; and four brothers, Bascom E. Hopkins, Earnest L. Hopkins, Charles Malcom and Edward M. Hopkins.

Survivors include his wife, Linnie Stillwell Hopkins of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Gene French of Roanoke; one son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Carnella Hopkins of Route 3, Max Meadows; two grandchildren, Carla Cannoy, Kim Briele; four great-grandchildren, Thomas Cannoy, Tyler Cannoy, Sarah Briele, and Amy Briele; two sisters, Mrs. George (Ruth) St. John of Bristol, and Mrs. Lee (Dr. Cam) McDavid Jr. of Dunnellon, Fla.; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer R. and Ruby Hopkins of Max Meadows, Thomas C. and Nancy Hopkins of Chester, Charles V. and Frances Hopkins of Draper, Jesse E. and Arbutus Hopkins, and Marion O. and Nora Hopkins, all of Pulaski; 22 nieces and 16 nephews.

Dewey Lee Sharitz

Dewey Lee Sharitz, 51, of Wytheville, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Tilley officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Robert L. and Ola Hardin Sharitz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Hoback Sharitz.

Survivors include two daughters, Debbie S. Dunford, her fiancé, David Lively of Wytheville, and Linda C. Sharitz of Bluefield, W.Va.; one son, Robert W. Sharitz of Bluefield, W.Va.; three sisters, Mary "Tommy" Sexton, Carolyn Cannoy, both of Martinsville, and Shirley McGrady of Wytheville; one brother, Roy L. Sharitz of Wytheville; and two grandchildren.

Thelma Maddison Louise Dawn Tabor

Thelma Maddison Louise Dawn Tabor, infant daughter of Kenneth R. Jr. and Cynthia Williams of Pulaski, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, in the Roanoke Community Hospital.

Private graveside services and interment will be held.

She is survived by her parents; three brothers, Mathias Arcarion Tabor, Logan Nathaniel Tabor, both of Dublin, and Conner Anthony Tabor of the home; grandparents, Kenneth R. Sr. and Sherry Tabor of Dublin, Meredith and Thelma Williams of Route 3, Wytheville, and Stella Tabor and Douglas Cross of Pulaski; great-grandparents, Garland Porter of Route 3, Wytheville, Nile Williams of Ivanhoe, and Marie Carroll of Pulaski; an aunt, Roshelle Tabor of Max Meadows; two uncles, Keith Tabor of Pulaski, and Curtis Williams of Ivanhoe; and six cousins.

Jim Elwood White

Jim Elwood White, 47, of Wytheville, died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to service time.

He is survived by his wife, Teri Coleman White of Wytheville; three sons, Josh White, Zach White and Caleb White of Wytheville; and four brothers, Frank White, Donald White, Jerry White and Eddie White, all of Pulaski.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

Frederick Odell Arnold

The Rev. Frederick Odell "Fred" Arnold, 70, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 1996, in Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 24, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with state overseer the Rev. Fred Fisher and the Rev. George Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery. The American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct graveside military rites.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Hobart Pierce and Fannie Ellen Dean Arnold. He was a minister for over 30 years and a member of the Max Meadows Church of God of Prophecy where he served as deacon. He owned Arnold & Son Masonry and will always be remembered by his brick, block and stone work. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Homer Arnold.

Survivors include his wife, the Rev. Olena Hughett Arnold of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Patsy Arnold and Sherman Duncan, and Maxine Arnold Ayers, both of Max Meadows; one son, Freddie Leon Arnold of Max Meadows; four granddaughters, Heather Ayers, Michelle Duncan-Altizer, Natasha Arnold, and Cassandra Arnold; one grandson, Douglas E. Ayers Jr.; two great-grandsons, Chase Altizer, and Mikel Frye; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna Sprinkle, Zelma A. McCandless, Dammie A. and Douglas Covey, Katherine A. and Jack Ray, and Cleo A. and Woodrow Dunford, all of Greensboro, N.C.; and two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Dewey Hensel and Mona Arnold of Max Meadows, William "Bert" and Jeanie Arnold of Minden, Neb., and Mina H. Arnold of Max Meadows.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Jaime Wynn Butler

Jaime Wynn Butler, 19, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in Wythe County Community Hospital from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Bakers Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Earl Hanks officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

She graduated from Fort Chiswell High School and was a student at Wytheville Community College and was employed as a swing manager at McDonalds in Fort Chiswell.

She is survived by her mother and step-father, Brenda and John King of Route 3, Wytheville; her father and step-mother, Jonny and Carol Butler of Radford; a daughter, Larista Tyler Walke; a fiancé, Clayton Walke of Route 3, Wytheville; a brother, Kevin Butler of Camp LeJune, N.C.; four step-sisters, Ann Sisson of Rocky Gap, Meg King of Wytheville, Denise Ratliffe of Rocky Gap, and Donna Stinchcomb of Radford; three step-brothers, John King of Route 3, Wytheville, Brian Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Darin Smith of Virginia Beach; her maternal grandparents, Brown and Hazel Bratton of Radford; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bakers Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church.

The family suggest that those who prefer may make memorials to the Tyler Walke Education Fund, Route 3, Box 734, Wytheville, Virginia 24382.

Louise Dunford Gibson

Louise Dunford Gibson, 80, of Roanoke, died Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Eddie Noe officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Charles Washington Dunford and Katherine Ward Dunford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John James Gibson.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Betty Gibson, Roy and Dianne Gibson of Roanoke, and Donald and Miss Oh Gibson of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren, Dirk Gibson of Las Vegas, Nev., Brian Gibson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mike Gibson of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Katherine Creger of Wytheville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Julia Blair Holtman

Julia Blair Holtman, 74, of Barstow, Calif., formerly of Wythe County, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 1996, in Barstow Veterans Home of California.

Services were held in Barstow, Calif.

She was a veteran of World War II, and served as a U.S. Navy nurse.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Blair; her husband, Louie F. Holtman; and three brothers, "Jock" Blair, Eldridge Blair, and Lloyd Blair.

Survivors include one son, James Holtman of Los Angeles, Calif.; four sisters, Helen Blair of Charleston, W.Va., Elizabeth Dutton, Dottie Blair, and Lois Blair, all of Wytheville; two brothers, Ewing "Pud" Blair, and J. Foster Blair of Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.

Cloyd Wilson Howe

Cloyd Wilson "Peanut" Howe, 77, of Route 1, Crockett, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 1996, in Wythe County Community Hospital.

Graveside memorial services were held Monday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View United Methodist Church cemetery in Dublin with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Wytheville American Legion Post No. 9 conducted graveside military rites.

He was born in Pulaski County, the son of the late Thomas and Blanche McGavock Howe. He was a member of the King's Grove United Methodist Church in Crockett, a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II, and a member of the Wytheville V.F.W. Post No. 2719.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Delp Howe of Crockett; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Michael Tarter of Crockett; two granddaughters, Jenny Tarter and Tanya Tarter, both of Crockett; one sister, Agnes Scott of Rockledge, Fla.; a special nephew, David Scott of Rockledge, Fla.; and other nieces and nephews.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the King's Grove United Methodist Church Building fund or to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services.
