Louise Radford Denegre
(July 28, 1921 - February 3, 2012)

Louise Radford Denegre, 90, of Irvington, VA, died on February 3, 2012. Louise was born July 28, 1921 in Evanston, Illinois, the daughter of the late Earle Radford and Rose Griffiths. She grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, attending Sunset Hill School. She attended Connecticut College for Women earning a BA degree in 1944. She married Thomas Bayne Denegre, Jr. in 1943. During WWII, while Tom served in submarines in the Pacific, she volunteered for the Red Cross and the USO. Her first son, Thomas Bayne Denegre III was born in 1944.

After the war, Navy duty took the family to Hawaii, New Orleans, Key West, New London, and Arlington, Va. Second son John Baldwin Denegre was born in 1949, and daughter Eleanor Radford Denegre in 1954.

The Denegres lived three years in Brussels, Belgium where Louise was honored by the Belgian Navy and received the U.S. MAAG Letter of Commendation.

Following Brussels, they left Navy life and returned to Louise’s Kansas City home where Tom started a career in banking. In 1967 they moved to Alexandria, Va, were Louise enjoyed volunteer work at the National Gallery of Art, the Corcoran Art Gallery, Gunston Hall Plantation, the Alexandria Athenaeum, and was a member of the Hunting Creek Garden Club.

In 1972, they moved to their riverside house, Pop Castle, in White Stone, Va., and in1998, they moved to Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury, Irvington, Va.

Louise was active in the beginning of Historic Christ Church Volunteers, chairing the first by-laws committee. She was Chairman of Volunteers, and was Director of the Historic Christ Church (HCC) Foundation board from 1981-1987. She was the first woman President of the HCC Foundation from 1983-1986. In recognition of her HCC work, Louise was awarded the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Silver Good Citizenship Medal in 1990. Louise continued volunteer work at HCC for many years thereafter.

As a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock, VA, she served on the Altar Guild and sang in the choir for 26 years. She volunteered at the Lancaster Community Library and served on the Board. Also she served on the Board of Mary Ball Washington Museum and was a founder of the Christmas Greens Sale. She served on the Board of the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts. She was a member of the Garden Club of the Northern Neck, and the Colonial Dames.

Louise enjoyed tennis and sailing, and adored the companionship of her Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

She is survived by her husband, and her children Tom, John and Eleanor.

A memorial service and interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 13 at Historic Christ Church, Irvington, VA, with The Reverend David May officiating. A reception will follow on the church grounds.

Lenore Browne Patterson Hall
(February 11, 1930 - February 4, 2012)

Lenore Browne Patterson Hall, 81, of Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury, Irvington died on February 4, 2012. She was born in Sweet Air, Md. daughter of the late William Biays and Miriam Morrison Patterson. Mrs. Hall was a graduate of Towson High School and received her degree in Nursing from the Hospital for the Women of Maryland in Baltimore, Md. She was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, a docent at Historic Christ Church, member of the Tuesday Morning Group and the Woman’s Club of White Stone.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, The Reverend Robert Charles Hall, Jr. Surviving are four sons, Mark Gilmor Hall of Raleigh, N.C., William Howard Hall of San Francisco, Cal., Charles Linden Hall of Monkton, Md., and Robert Charles Hall, III of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; four grandchildren, Erika Wanamaker, Brian, Stewart and Rosemary Hall; a brother, Richard M. Patterson of Phoenix, Md.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 11 at Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock. Interment will be in St. James’s My Lady’s Manor Church cemetery, Monkton, Md.

Memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the Woman’s Club of White Stone, P. O. Box 384, White Stone 22578.

Raymond Allen Dennis
(December 21, 1952 - February 3, 2012)

Raymond Allen Dennis, 59, of Lancaster died on February 3, 2012. He was born in The Bronx, New York, son of the late William and Johanna Gillen Dennis and was a retired truck driver. Mr. Dennis was a U.S. Army Vietnam Era veteran and a member of the American Legion Post #82 in Kilmarnock. Ray was a dedicated sports fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. He was an avid lover of music and a former rock and roll band drummer. A skilled motorcyclist, he enjoyed many hours of cruising on his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Heather Jean Rice Dennis; two daughters, Judy Caffrey and husband, Sean of Kingston, N.Y. and Erin D. Hayden and husband Jamie of Weems; two sons, Jeremy M. Dennis and wife, Sarah M. of Jacksonville, N.C. and Matthew J. Dennis and wife, Jessica L. W. of Stafford; fourteen grandchildren, Nicholas Jefferson, Brittin and Jason Caffrey, Lane, Hunter and Hope Hayden, Kayla Furrow, Haley Pease, Jayden, Tyler and Aubrey Dennis, Libbie and Sam Dennis; a sister, JoAnn Ramsey and husband, Woody of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a brother, William “Billy D” Dennis of Bushkill Falls, Penn.; a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. As well as many other friends who loved him like a father.

Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 11 at Kilmarnock United Methodist Church, Kilmarnock with Rev. Debbie Marion officiating. Interment will be private.

Lydia Lewis Bryant
(February 14, 1924 - January 31, 2012)

Lydia Lewis Bryant, 87 of Nuttsville died on January 31, 2012. She was the widow of Calbert J. Bryant and a lifelong member of Corrottoman Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Beverly B. Courtney of Nuttsville and Selma B. Foster of Mechanicsville; grandchildren, Bryan J. Courtney and Anne C. Hinders both of Williamsburg, Laura F. Clancy of Stafford; great-grandchildren, Denai, Madison, Mason and Brandon Courtney, Alexandra and Abigail Clancy; brothers, Stanley, Calvin and Raymond Lewis of Lancaster. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Hampton and Gene Lewis

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 4 at Corrottoman Baptist Church, Ottoman with Rev. David Cromer officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call 6 – 8 p.m. Friday, February 3 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.

Tillie Maciejewski Weil
(October 31, 1921 - January 16, 2012)

Tillie Maciejewski Weil, 90, of Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury, Irvington died on January 16, 2012. She was a first generation American born into a Polish family of immigrants in Hamtramk, Michigan on October 31, 1921. Mrs. Weil was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a charter member of the Women in Military Service for America. Mrs. Weil retired as an administrator with the Central Intelligence Agency.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Peter Gerth Weil; a twin brother, Henry Majeski of Tucson, Arizona. She was preceded in death by a son, David Ernest Weil.

Memorial services will be held at Rappahannock Westminster -Canterbury, Irvington. Inurnment will be in Arlington National cemetery with military honors.

Ferne Fletcher Walker-Bernhardt
(March 16, 1932 - January 14, 2012)

Ferne Fletcher Walker-Bernhardt, 79, of White Stone died on January 14, 2012 in Naples, Florida. She was born on March 16, 1932 in Waltham, Mass. daughter of the late John Gill and Rachel Gill Fletcher. After graduating in 1949, from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School she graduated in 1952 from George Washington University, where she served as President of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and was a member of the cheerleading squad. During the 1950’s she joined the Washington Figure Skating Club and represented them in Sectional and National competitions winning several medals and also taught skating at Uline Arena in Washington, D. C. for a number of years.

In 1968 she married William Bradley Walker, Jr. and became a partner of the Chesapeake Boat Basin, Inc. in Kilmarnock. Mr. Walker preceded her in death on July 1, 1993.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution serving as treasurer and regent and was a former president of Lettice Lee Chapter of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century. In 1969, Mrs. Walker-Bernhardt joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary remaining a member for 40 years and served as Flotilla Commander and Division III Captain, helped establish and was former president of the Lancaster County Little League, former president of Chesapeake Academy Parents and Patrons Association and for 10 years chaired the Antiques Show and Sale. She also was secretary/Treasurer of Landing Home Owners Association in White Stone and treasurer and president of the Naples Four Winds, Inc. in Naples Florida.

Surviving are her husband of 10 years, Charles F. Bernhardt; a son, John Gill Walker of SanDiego, Cal.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 27 at Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

John Alvin Christopher
(March 5, 1930 - January 13, 2012)

John Alvin “Johnny” Christopher, 81, of Irvington died on Friday, January 13, 2012. He was the son of the late Robert Edward and Izola Haynie Christopher and was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis C. Edwards and a brother, Robert “Bob” Christopher.

Mr. Christopher was a lifelong and active member serving in many capacities, deacon and trustee of Kilmarnock Baptist Church. He was a member and past president of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department, member of the Lancaster County Lions Club, a former member of the Kilmarnock Town Council and a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. For 50 years, he was the owner of T. C. Treakle and John A. Christopher Oil Company later known as TCH Oil Company in Irvington. During his work with the oil company, his affiliations with the Lions Club and Kilmarnock Baptist Church, Mr. Christopher made many generous and charitable contributions to the community.

An avid golfer, basketball and baseball player, he played center for the Kilmarnock High School basketball team from 1946 – 1949 and led the team to two district championships in three years. In 1947, he was the starting first baseman on the Kilmarnock High School championship baseball team. Mr. Christopher was one of the first sponsors when Little League was organized in the Northern Neck and coached the Lancaster County Lions little league team for 10 years. He was the only sponsor and financially supported the Texaco’s men’s fast pitch soft ball team from 1957 -1972. In 2009, he was honored with his induction into the Northern Neck Sports “Wall of Fame”.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Doris Brown Christopher; two sons, John “Al” A. Christopher, Jr. and wife Cathy of Kilmarnock, Michael L. Christopher and wife, Janet of White Stone; a son-in-law, Ronald Edwards of Massanutten; six grandchildren, Jeremiah Christopher of Alexandria, Drew Christopher and wife, Amanda of Mechanicsville, Jacob Christopher of Portland, Or., Ryan Christopher of Lusby, Md., Matthew Christopher of Kilmarnock and Kassy Edwards of Massanutten; a great granddaughter, Clara Grace Christopher; two sisters, Eleanor Lee Piller and husband, Maurice of Vienna, Doris Ann Scott and husband, Lloyd of Fredericksburg; a sister-in-law, Patricia Christopher of Blacksburg.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 15 at Kilmarnock Baptist Church, Kilmarnock. Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Kilmarnock. The family will receive friends 6 – 8 p.m. Saturday, January 14 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.

Susanna Farley Schmitt
Departed on Feb. 20, 2004 and resided in Richmond, VA.

Susanna Farley Schmitt of Richmond, died Friday, February 20, 2004, after a brief illness, at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her father, Ernst Watson Farley Sr.; her mother, Maude Starke Farley; three brothers, Ernst Watson Farley Jr., Edwin Starke Farley and James Cheever Farley; and her husband, Lt. Colonel Robert J. Schmitt Sr. of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. She is survived by her sister, Maude Safford Spencer of Clover, S.C.; her sister-in-law, Eleanor Caperton Farley; two sons, Michael Starke Schmitt and Carl Farley Schmitt and his wife, Kelly Barnett Schmitt, all of Richmond; two granddaughters, Addison Leigh Schmitt and Sydney Katherine Schmitt; many beloved nieces and nephews; and her children, Robert John Schmitt Jr. and Nancy Schmitt Bishop. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and Hollins College (Bachelor of Science), 1940. Beginning in the fall of 1940, she taught physics and math, first at Henry Clay High School in Ashland, then at Douglas Freeman and John Marshall High Schools in Richmond, and in an American Dependent School in Germany and Okinawa. Before her marriage in February, 1956, following a tour of duty in Japan, the birth of their two sons, and Lt. Colonel Schmitt's death in 1968, she returned to Richmond and resumed her 45 year teaching career. In addition to 13 years at Maggie Walker High School, (1969-1982), she taught math at Thomas Jefferson, Douglas Freeman, John Marshall and George Wythe High Schools, before her retirement in 1985. She was a member of Ginter Park Baptist Church in Richmond. She filled many roles in its educational and missionary undertakings. During their time in Japan, she and her husband were charter members of the English speaking Tokyo Baptist Church. Later, she spent two summers doing volunteer work with Baptist Missionaries in Triunfo, north east of Recife, Brazil. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends Friday evening, February, 26, in the Farley Community House at the Ginter Park Baptist Church 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the church, Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ginter Park Baptist Church, 1200 Wilmington Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227 or to the New Community School, 4211 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, Va. 23227.

Cynthia Breitenstein Thompsen
(March 28, 1947 - December 25, 2011)

Cynthia B. Thompsen, 64, of Burgess, Va. died on December 25, 2011. She was born in New Jersey on March 28, 1947.

She was a graduate of Radford University receiving her master’s degree in education and as a devoted teacher of 42 years loved her career. Cynthia was the preschool director of The Wiley Child Development Center, Northern Neck YMCA.

Surviving are her husband of 41 years, William W. Thompsen; two sons, Eric S. Thompsen and wife, Amanda of Hartsville, S. C., Craig W. Thompsen and wife, Dawn of Kilmarnock; five grandchildren, Matthew and Emma of Hartsville, S. C., Danielle, DeeDra and David of Kilmarnock; a brother, Richard Brientenstein of Swansboro, N. C.; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28 at The Wiley Child Development Center Northern Neck YMCA.

Elsie Wilmore Gaines
(May 25, 1927 - January 5, 2012)

Elsie Wilmore Gaines, 84, of Lancaster died on Thursday, January 5, 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Gaines, six brothers, Horace Albert, Charles Carroll, Joseph Lawrence, Raymond, Greystone Morris and James Delano Wilmore and two sisters, Alma Raynor and Evelyn Mae Jones. Elsie was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a retail clerk with W. T. Grant Company.

Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Lois Wilmore and Mary Jean Wilmore both of Lancaster; a brother-in-law, James L. Jones of Farnham; a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 9 at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock with Rev. Robert O. Jones officiating. Interment will be in Claybrook Baptist Church cemetery, Weems. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service.

Grover Giles Haynie, Jr.
(December 21, 1928 - December 19, 2011)

Grover Giles Haynie, Jr., 82, of Fairport died on Monday, December 19, 2011. He was a member of Wesley Presbyterian Church, a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a retired insurance agent for United Insurance Company of America. Mr. Haynie was devoted to his God, family and Country and was an avid and devoted New York Yankees baseball fan.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Delma Conklin Haynie; three daughters, Suzanne Reiser of Fredericksburg, Jeanne Gilmer and husband, John of King George, Lisa Pickney and husband, John of Reston; three granddaughters, Kathleen and Amelia Gilmer and Rebecca Pickney; a brother, Willard Haynie and wife, Frances of Fairport. He was preceded in death by his parents Grover G., Sr. and Esther M. Haynie and a sister, Mary E. Williams.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 22 at Wesley Presbyterian Church, Weems with Rev. Marion Paul White and Rev. Dr. Tom Coye officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
