Ray McKinley Buraker

Ray McKinley Buraker, 85, of 422 Hico Drive, Madison Heights, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003 in Virginia Baptist Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Loretta Lipscomb Buraker for forty-two years.

Born January 24, 1918 in Madison County, he was the son of the late George Buraker and Willie Tomas Buraker. Ray retired from the U.S. Civil Service with twenty years of service and served during World War II as a Sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Buraker and Zelma Buraker; one sister-in-law, Myrtle Buraker, and three brothers-in-law, Paul Abernethy, Gene Anderson, and Thomas Lantz.

In addition to his wife, Ray is survived by one daughter, Annette Gilbert and her husband, Charles and one son, Wayne Buraker, both of Madison Heights; two brothers, Grat Buraker and his wife, Margaret and Harold Buraker; four sisters, Eva M. Abernethy and Virginia Anderson, all of Culpepper, Ivadene Efrid and her husband, Roy of Madison and Rieda Lantz of Mt. Rose, West Virginia and five grandchildren, Kimberly Michelle Gilbert, Jonathan Michael Gilbert, Jeffrey Buraker, Anthony Buraker, and Matthew “Sweat Pea” Carroll and lots of loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Carlton Duck. Interment with military honors by American Legion Post #16 will follow in Presbyterian cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of his daughter, 424 Hico Drive.

Thomas “Tommy” Michael Freeman

Thomas “Tommy” Michael Freeman, 28, of Rustburg, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

He was born July 11, 1975 in Perth Amboy, NJ, the son of Thomas William Freeman and Anne Cioccia Freeman who reside in Rustburg. Tommy was a communicant of St. Thomas More Church. He was a graduate of Brick (NJ) Memorial High School, class of 1993 and was a Muscular Dystrophy Poster Boy for New Jersey in 1988 and 1989.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Lisa Kirk and husband John of Martinsburg, WV; a brother, Alex Freeman and wife Gina of Brick, NJ; an uncle, Joseph Cioccia of Chambersburg, PA; an aunt, Peggy Freeman of Manchester, NJ; four nieces and nephews, Michael T. and Christine A. Kirk of Martinsburg, WV and Ally and Rex Freeman of Brick, NJ.

A funeral mass will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 25, 2004 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church by Rev. James Dorson. Interment will follow in Holy Cross cemetery.

Family visitation will be today from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., prior to the service, at the church.

Whitten Timberlake Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dorothy Ann Smith Sorocco

Dorothy Ann Smith Sorocco, 61 of Rustburg, passed away Saturday, January 01, 2005. She was the husband of Thomas Sorocco.

Born August 1, 1943, in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late William and Betty Cash Smith. Mrs. Sorocco was a member of the Amherst Baptist Church.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Melissa Steele and husband Randy of Rustburg and Theresa Buckles and husband Larry of Concord, a son, Charles Sorocco of Ft. Collins, CO, three sisters, Margaret Clingenpeel of Lynchburg, Bessie Pannel of Afton, and Lucille Wills of Baltimore, MD, two brothers, James Smith and Clayton Smith both of Madison Heights, five grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2004 at the Smith Family cemetery in Amherst.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the charity of your choice.

John L. "Jack" Stacy Sr.

John L. "Jack" Stacy Sr., 56 of 166 Shearingham Drive, Madison Heights, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2005 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Donna K. Stacy.

Born January 1, 1949 in Grundy, he was a son of the late William Kermit and Rita Scott Stacy. He was a senior sales associate for the U.S. Postal Service for almost 30 years and a member of Faith Baptist Church. Mr. Stacy was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. and while serving during the Vietnam War was the recipient of two Purple Hearts. He was a Life Member of The Military Order of the Purple Heart, a charter member of the Lynchburg Marine Corp. League, a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Garland Rodes Chapter, and a Life Member of the National Rifle Assoc. and The North American Hunting Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Cherie S. Sanford and husband Jeff of Lynchburg, Lori S. Miller and husband Daniel of Madison Heights, and John L. Stacy, Jr., of Lynchburg; a step daughter, Mary Shae Finley of Richmond; a brother, Victor “Vic” Stacy and his wife, Lill of Madison Heights; two sisters, Darlene Bowser and her husband, Bob and Jauvita Armentrout, both of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Cierra Campbell, Skylar Sanford, Sophia Sanford, Bryson Miller, and Logan Miller; his mother-in-law, Mary Dinwiddie; brother-inlaw, Ron Dinwiddie, both of Lynchburg and many other special relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Dr. Harlan W. Cooke. Interment with military honors by American Legion Post 16 will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of his brother, 497 Amelon Road, Madison Heights.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions may consider the American Cancer Society or the Faith Baptist Church Building Fund.

Edward Louis Ashwell

Edward Louis Ashwell, 93, of Lynchburg, passed away, Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Deaner Ashwell who passed away in January, 1989.

Born Nov. 26, 1912 in Bedford County, he was the son of the late Robert H. Ashwell and the late Martha Jane Gallier Ashwell. He was a member of Clearview Baptist Church and has served with the US Navy during WWII. Mr. Ashwell was retired from Pettyjohn Co. and prior to that was employed Craddock-Terry Co.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha J. Ashwell; four sisters: Eva A. Parker, Edna A. Burgess, Helen A. Mawyer and Mary D. Ashwell; one half sister, Barbara A. Allen; and one brother: Harry H. Ashwell.

He is survived by one daughter: Rebecca Mayberry and husband Robert of Rustburg; four sons: Allen Ashwell and wife Betty of Lynchburg, Roger Lee Ashwell, Dennis Ashwell and wife Brenda of Rustburg, and Phillip Ashwell and wife Laverne also of Rustburg; thirteen grandchildren; twenty two great grandchildren; one sister, Ruby E. Ashwell; and a devoted friend, Marion Jones.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tues., Feb. 21, 2006 at Fort Hill Memorial Park by Dr. Wayne F. Greene.

Family and friends can visit with family at the home of Dennis and Brenda Ashwell in Rustburg, from 6 – 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

Wilma Mae Jackson Barlow

Wilma Mae Jackson Barlow, 77, of Rustburg, passed away Monday, April 14, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital. For 38 years, she was the wife of Daniel Lenox Barlow who passed away in 1985.

Born June 3, 1925 in Aurora, IN, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Jackson and the late Margaret Newman Jackson. Mrs. Barlow was a graduate of Aurora (IN) High School. She received her B.A. from Franklin College in Franklin, IN and her M.A. from East Tennessee State University. She and her husband and family moved to the Lynchburg area in 1978. She retired in 1994 as Asst. Professor of Mathematics at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Mrs. Barlow was instrumental in starting the Computer Science program at Liberty University. She was a member of Hyland Heights Baptist Church and The Order of the Shield, Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by twin sons; Douglas Lee Barlow and Forrest Lee Barlow.

Mrs. Barlow is survived by: two sons; Dr. Dana Barlow and wife Betsy Stickley of Big Stone Gap, VA and Rob Barlow of Rustburg, VA, three grandchildren; Andrew and Daniel Barlow of Rustburg and Kali Jernigan of Birmingham, AL and a sister-in-law; Betty Skidmore of San Bernardino, CA.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 21, 2003 at Rustburg cemetery by the Reverend Carl Weiser, pastor of Hyland Heights Baptist Church.

Friends and family may visit Sunday from 6 – 8 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Rex Bachner Hibbert

Rex Bachner Hibbert, 30, of Virginia Beach and formerly of Madison Heights and Lynchburg, died unexpectedly Friday February 17, 2006 in Virginia Beach. He was the son of Bill and Meg Hibbert of Salem and formerly Madison Heights; brother and brother-in-law of Frederick and Meredith Hibbert Gerber of Danville, Pennsylvania; and Haley E. Hibbert and boyfriend Greg Frey of Charlotte, N.C., and boyfriend of Leah Drinkard of Lynchburg. Rex graduated from Amherst County High School where he was a runner-up all district goalie on the Soccer Team for two years, and a manager for the basketball team. Prior to attending Pfeiffer College in North Carolina, he was concession cook for the Lynchburg Hillcats. Later, he was a cook and assistant kitchen manager for Shakers and Outback Restaurants in Lynchburg, San Francisco, California, and West Springfield, Massachusetts, before moving to Virginia Beach in June 2005 to cook for Waterman's Beachfront Grill. He was a hard worker, a loving son and a good friend who would give a ride to anyone he knew who needed it and work a restaurant shift so somebody else could have time off. Rex was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Mary Gross of Albany, Ga.; and Bill and Robbie Hibbert, of Atlanta, Ga. Both his grandmothers lived in Lynchburg in later life. A celebration of his life will be held in Lynchburg on Friday, February 24, at 2 p.m., at St. John’s Episcopal Church where he had been an acolyte. Another celebration will follow in Virginia Beach on Thursday, March 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Waterman’s Beachfront Grill at Atlantic and Fifth Street. His ashes will be interred later at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Rex B. Hibbert Scholarship Fund for culinary arts, FNB Salem Bank & Trust, 220 East Main Street, Salem, VA 24153.

Thomas Jessie Tomlin

Thomas Jessie Tomlin, 87, of Pleasant View, passed away Friday April 11, 2003 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Bertha Burks Tomlin.

Born April 26, 1915 in Amherst County, he was a son of the late Jessie James Tomlin and Blanche Tomlin Tomlin. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Harry and Marshall; sisters, Thelma, Dolly, and Gertie; son, Thomas Elwood Tomlin, and daughter-in-law, Etta Lee Tomlin.

Mr. Tomlin was a retired electrical worker, and a 55 year member of Local Union # 70 I.B.E.W. of Washington, D.C., he was a member of the Ageless Wonders, the T.Wiley Davis Lodge # 46 Madison Heights Order of the Oddfellows, the Pedlar Ruritan Club, the Amherst Order of the Eastern Star # 115, the Hill City Masonic Lodge # 183, A.F.& A.M., the Scottish Rite, and a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Marshall O. Tomlin of Pleasant View;daughters, Shirley T. Massie and husband Norman of Pedlar Mills, Barbara T. Humphreys and husband James of Agricola, Betty T. Tyree and husband Donald of Madison Heights; daughter-in-law, Diane Tomlin of Monroe; sisters, Ruby Burch of Buena Vista, and Virgie Humphreys of Madison Heights; thirteen grandchildren and twenty six great- grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday April 15, 2003 at Whitten Monelison Chapel, by Dr. Jerry Falwell, Rev. David Heerspink, and Rev. Hugh Bumgarner.

Burial will follow in the Masonic Garden of Fort Hill Memorial Park, with Masonic Rites by the Hill City Lodge # 183, A.F.& A.M.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday April 13, at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of his daughter Barbara, 799 East Perch Road, Agricola.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pedlar Fire Dept. and Rescue Squad.

Preston Glenn Hatcher, Sr.

Preston Glenn Hatcher, Sr., 71, of Lynchburg, died Sunday August 10, 2003 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Joyce Loretta Ewing Hatcher.

Born in Lynchburg, December 15, 1931, he was a son of the late James Early “Pop” Hatcher, an early pioneer in Lynchburg aviation mechanics, and Minnie James Guthrie Hatcher.

Mr. Hatcher was an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served four years as an airplane mechanic; he retired as a Lt. with the Lynchburg Fire Department after thirty years service, and was a member of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by two sons, Derek Preston Hatcher and Preston Glenn Hatcher, Jr.; of Lynchburg; a brother, James Franklin Hatcher, of Maryland; four grandchildren, Dustin James Hatcher, Bradley Glenn Hatcher, Joey Adam Hatcher, and Timothy Brian Hatcher all of Lynchburg; a great-granddaughter, Haley Ann Marie Hatcher; five nephews and three nieces.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday August 14, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by Les Davidson, chaplin of the Lynchburg Fire Department. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park, with military honors by the American Legion Post 16.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at the residence 611 Newberne Street.

Shirley Mae Bowden

Shirley Mae Bowden, 76, of Lynchburg, passed from this life to her heavenly home on Monday, June 21, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dennis B. Bowden.

She was born November 21, 1927 in the Rochester, NY vicinity, the daughter of the late Marshall MacDougall and the late Elizabeth Osborn MacDougall. Mrs. Bowden was a member of First Assembly of God Church and had retired from General Electric after 25 years of employment.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Calvin Fisher of Lynchburg; a son, Danny Bowden and wife, Debra, of Scarborough, ME; a grandson, Jeremy Fisher and wife, Cheryl, of Winston-Salem, NC, two granddaughters, Leana Kail and husband, Joe, of Lynchburg and Tia Bowden of Scarborough, ME. Her great grandchildren, Megan and Connor Kail of Lynchburg and Emma Fisher of Winston-Salem, NC, were her pride and joy. She is also survived by three sisters, Doris Fouraker and husband, Rev. Charlie Fouraker, of FL, and Betty Henry and Lois Groot of NY; a brother, Quentin MacDougall and wife, June, of NY, as well as a host of other family and friends all who loved her dearly.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, June 24, 2004 at First Assembly of God Church by Rev. Rodney T. Mason. Private entombment will be in the Fort Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Family visitation will be today from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Miller Home of Lynchburg, 2134 Westerly Dr., Lynchburg.

Whitten Timberlake Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Naomi Harris King

Naomi Harris King, 82 of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2004. She was the wife of the late Richard King.

Born November 15, 1922, in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Bennett and Sadie Camden Harris. Mrs. Harris was retired from the First Virginia Bank of Amherst as a manager, where she worked for 25 years and was a member of the Elon Presbyterian Church.

She was also preceded in death by a niece, Debrell F. Massie.

Survivors include two sisters, Ruth H. Foster of Lynchburg and Marie H. Shrader of Amherst, a niece, Sue F. Godsey and husband Len of Madison Heights, a nephew, R. James Foster, Jr. of Richmond and his wife Margaret H. Foster of Mechanicsville, special friend, Russel Shelton of Lynchburg, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 31, 2004 at the Elon Presbyterian Church by the Reverend Barry Tucker. Interment will take place in Springhill cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the charity of your choice.
