BUTLER
Henry Stuart Butler Sr., age 82, departed this life on January 24, 2001, born in Richmond, Va., Class of 1937, Thomas Jefferson High School, a longtime resident of Springfield, Va. He was the beloved husband of Gretno S. Butler for 58 years; a devoted father to Henry S. Butler Jr. and Mary Butler Dennis; father-in-law of Sherry Butler and Al Dennis; and loving grandfather to Jessica and Clayton. He is also survived by his brother, Marshall V. Butler; and sister-in-law, Lucy M. Butler. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Walter M. Butler; and sister-in-law, Betty Butler. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27, at 2 p.m. at Springfield United Methodist Church, 7047 Old Keene Mill Rd., Springfield, Va. Inurnment Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond, Va., 11 a.m. Monday, January 29. CAMERON
Margaret Marchetti Cameron, 89, of Richmond, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001. She was the widow of William W. (Johnny) Cameron Sr. She is survived by two sons, W. Wayne Cameron and his wife, Jean of Richmond, Dr. L.M. Cameron and his wife, Retta of Aiken, S.C.; six grandchildren, Cindy Jessee and her husband, Tom of Richmond, Val Dealey and her husband, Bret of Richmond, Linda Cameron of Richmond, Chris Cameron of New Orleans, La., Julie Cameron and Chad Moore, both of northern Virginia; four great-grandchildren, Cameron, Taylor, Preston and Mary Catherine Jessee, all of Richmond. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Friday with a Christian Wake at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, St. Bridget's Catholic Church. Interment Mount Calvary Cemetery.

CHASE
Jeffrey David "Jeff" Chase, 52, of Harwood, Md., died January 24, 2001. Mr. Chase was a graduate of Thomas Dale High School in Chester, Va., and graduated from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, N.C., with a degree in business. Mr. Chase was employed with the FDIC for ten years and was a section chief for Financial Operation Central Section in the Division of Finance. He was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Ga., and a member of the West Point Parents Club. He enjoyed geneaology, fishing and attending his children's activities. Mr. Chase is survived by his wife, Lynn G. Chase; a son, Matthew B. Chase of West Point, N.Y.; a daughter, Melissa A. Chase of Salisbury, Md.; one brother, William B. Chase of Owings Mills, Md.; one sister, Catherine A. Chase of Chester, Va.; and his parents, Robert and Beatrice Chase of Chester, Va. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, Md. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 27, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 122 Bayard Rd., Lothian, Md., with burial in Grantham Family Cemetery in Grantham, N.C. DAVENPORT
Ann Berry Davenport, 55, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord January 25, 2001. She was preceded in death by her parents, Zeb and Annie Berry of Elizabeth City, N.C. Mrs. Davenport is survived by her husband, Phillip D.; and son, Paul B. Davenport. She was the president and former owner of the Berry Funeral Home in Elizabeth City, N.C., and founder of the Richmond Chapter Mended Hearts, board member of the American Heart Association and the Deaf Community Service Advisory Board. She also founded the Richmond Region of the Virginia Watercolor Society and was a co-chairman of the Richmond Region of the Watercolor Society. Mrs. Davenport was honored with many awards for her works in watercolor, and many of her works are in private and public collections throughout the Eastern Seaboard and Mid-west. She was also a member of the Virginia Watercolor Society, Bon Air Artist Association, Metropolitan Artist Association, the Rehoboth Beach Art League and the Baltimore Watercolor Society. Mrs. Davenport was the principal writer for MCV Hospital's magazine, "Hospitals in Action," MCV's newsletter, "MCV News," which are distributed throughout the hospital to all alumni and the medical community throughout the world. She also published many essays in magazines such as the "Southern Journal," "Moments in Time" and "Home Life." Mrs. Davenport attended Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., majoring in history and minoring in education. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at West End Assembly of God Church, with entombment to follow at 3 p.m. in Westlawn Cemetery in Elizabeth City, N.C. The family will also receive friends at their home, 2909 Park Ave., Richmond, Va.

EASON
Griffin Miller Eason, 18 months old, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., died Thursday, January 18, 2001, at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y. Born in Poughkeepsie on July 20, 1999, he was the son of Katherine Kelly Eason. In addition to his mother, survivors include his grandparents, Samuel Miller Eason and Erline Griffin Eason of Midlothian, Va. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 27, at Swift Creek Presbyterian Church, 5900 Woolridge Rd., Midlothian, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to the March of Dimes, 488 Freedom Plains Rd., Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12603.

ELLIS
Louise Beach Ellis, 95, of Hopewell, died January 23, 2001, in John Randolph Nursing Home. Mrs. Ellis was the last of seven children born to the late Rosa Fowlkes Beach and Charles Wesley Beach of "Oak Forest" in Dinwiddie County. She graduated from Midway High School and Farmville State Teachers' College (now Longwood). She taught school in Franklin County and came to Hopewell in 1926 after her marriage to the late Thomas Irvin Ellis. When her children were in high school and college, she began a second career, locally, in retail sales. Mrs. Ellis was employed by Cook's Inc., Southern Department Store and Rucker-Rosenstock's of Cavalier Square, where she was in charge of ladies ready-to-wear, retiring at age 72. She maintained an avid interest in people, church, civic and political affairs, visiting the sick and gospel singing. She was a leader in the women's work at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years. Mrs. Ellis taught the Rebecca Bible Class and, in 1979, was awarded an honorary life membership by the W.O.C. (now Presbyterian Women). Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Rebecca Ellis Henry and her husband, Robert B. Henry of Alexandria; one son, Charles Irvin Ellis and wife, Daphne P. Ellis of Lynchburg; one granddaughter, Linda Ellis Melton and husband, Thomas E. Melton of Madison Heights; two great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Joseph Melton of Madison Heights; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Phillips Beach of Dinwiddie County and Edna Earle McIntyre Beach of Hopewell; one brother-in-law, H. Averill Doyle of Waynesboro; one nephew, Charles Averill Doyle of Waynesboro; three nieces, Rosa Doyle Rhodes of Chattanooga, Tenn., Cheryl Beach McNelley of Chester, Judge Rebecca Beach Smith of Norfolk; and a cousin, Mable I. Fowlkes of Hopewell. A service will be conducted by the Rev. Larry Miles at 11 a.m. on Friday, at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church, 1201 Blackstone Ave., Hopewell, Va., followed by burial at Appomattox Cemetery. Flowers or memorial donations are welcome.

FISCHER
V. Maxine Holmes Fischer of Davenport, Florida, formerly of Charles City, Va., passed on to be with her Lord, Saturday, January 13, 2001. She was a retired executive secretary from Rohm and Haas Co. She is survived by her husband, Robert Fischer; her mother, Irese C. Holmes; her son and his wife, Ralph and Bonnie Liberty; two stepsons, Shane, Bob and his wife, Brenda; stepdaughter, Michelle; two grandchildren, Ryan and Leah Liberty; two step-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Jacob Fischer; a devoted uncle, Russell Holmes and his wife, Dee. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 27, 2001 at 2 p.m., Samaria Baptist Church. Maxine requested, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Samaria Baptist Church Building Fund, 8130 Lott Cary Rd., Providence Forge, Va. 23140.

FREEMAN
Minnie Bea Freeman of Richmond, widow of George P. Freeman, died Saturday, January 20, 2001, in Merritt Island, Fla. She is survived by her son, George P. Freeman Jr.; her daughter, Nancy F. Howell; three grandchildren, Whitney McGuiness, George Freeman III and Michelle Anderson; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Freeman was a charter member of Reveille United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 27, in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Reveille United Methodist Church or your favorite charity. Arrangements by the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home.

FURLONG
Hilda Hester Furlong, 71, of Winter Haven, Florida, formerly of Richmond, Va., passed away on January 20, 2001 after a long illness with cancer. Mrs. Furlong is survived by her husband of 49 years, William H. Furlong Jr.; daughters, Beverly F. McLamb and husband, Charles T. of Charlotte, N.C., Dr. Martha Furlong of Savannah, Ga., Judith F. Wells and husband, William E. of Clarksville, Va.; four grandchildren, Kellyn and Scott McLamb, and Laura and Amy Wells; sisters, Mrs. Marion H. Giannasi of Richmond and Mrs.Darlene H. Peters of Virginia Beach. Mrs. Furlong's parents, Carl Thomas Hester and Allene Breedlove Hester; sister, Josephine H. Taylor; and brother, Carl Thomas Hester Jr. preceded her in death. Hilda and William resided in Winter Haven, Florida, for 25 years, where Hilda was president and treasurer of the Winter Haven Bridge Club, food chairperson for Hospice's annual fund raising events for many years, and assisted the American Red Cross in similar events. She was an active member of the Lake Region Yacht and Country Club, involving herself in social, entertainment and athletic team activities. A memorial service will be held at Reveille United Methodist Chapel, 4200 Cary Street Rd., at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 27. Interment will be private at Greenwood Chapel Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to your local hospice or Palmetto Heath Hospice, Bluffton, S.C. 29910.

GAY
Arthur J. Gay, age 40, departed this life suddenly January 14, 2001. He is survived by his loving mother, Ethel M. Gay; daughters, Tomika and Artisha Gay; stepson, Aaron Gay; two brothers, Donzell and Joseph Gay Jr. (Melinda); four sisters, Tyeatta S. Davis and Robin E. Smith (Tyrone), Ellen J. and Charlene D. Gay; aunt, Josephine Peryarr; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Graveside services will be conducted today 2:30 p.m., Oakwood Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to kindly assemble at the funeral home at 2:15 p.m.

GLASS
Mrs. Addie M. Glass, formerly of 1220 W. Leigh St., died January 24, 2001. Surviving are one son, William L. Glass Jr. (Connie); one daughter, Brenda M. Payne; four grandchildren, William H. Payne Jr., Monica Brown (Devin), Karen Glass and Alan Glass; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Theodore Payne; one brother, Charles Stewart; devoted caretaker, Venita Harkless; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where the family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. After 10 a.m. Saturday, remains will rest in Fifth Street Baptist Church, 2800 Third Ave., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Rev. HOLLOWAY
Mrs. Pearl Morris Holloway, 82, of Jarratt, died Thursday, January 25, 2001. She is survived by her husband, James Woodrow Holloway; one daughter, Edith Holloway Proctor and her husband, Marvin (Tink) of Colonial Heights; one son, William P. (Billy) Holloway and his wife, Barbara of Jarratt; six grandchildren, Susan Robinson, Judy P. Davis, Jeff Proctor, James Proctor, Dennis Holloway, Robyn H. Whitby; and 12 great-grandchildren. In accordance with her wishes, in hopes of helping others, her remains were donated to the State Anatomical Board for medical research. The family has scheduled a memorial service for 2 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2001. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Centenary United Methodist Church in Jarratt or a favorite charity.

KELLEY
Lloyd Odell (Dell) Kelley Jr. of Mechanicsville, Va., died Wednesday, January 24, 2001. He is survived by his parents, Lloyd and Addie Lee Kelley; two sisters, Diane K. Shrader and Joyce K. Young; two brothers, John and Kraig Kelley. He was a Vietnam veteran and retiree of Dupont. Remains rest Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where family will receive friends Friday 4:30 to 8 p.m., and where services will be held Saturday 2 p.m. Interment private.

Herbert Ernest King, age 88, of Richmond, former owner of H.W. Rountrees and Company, died Tuesday January 23, 2001 in a local hospital. He is survived by two sons, Dr. E. Davey King and his wife, Sue Eastham King, and William A. King and his wife, Ana Ines King, both of Richmond; one daughter, Brenda E. Webber and her husband, Cmdr. William T. Webber of Waldorf, Md.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer L. King of Fairfax, Va., Ashley E. King Taber, H. King, both of Richmond, Lindsay A. Loranger and her husband, David Loranger of Newport News, Va., William N. Webber, Hunter T. Webber and V. Taylor Webber; one great-grandchild, Halie M. Loranger; and one brother, Frederick King of Mobile, Ala. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 27, at All Saints Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church or the American Cancer Society.

Mable Slagle Loftis, age 77, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001. She is survived by two daughters, Merle "Patsy" Thorpe and husband, Nueit, Dianne Ligon and husband, Lloyd "Butch"; two sons, Wayne Ferguson and wife, Sandra, and Steve Ferguson, all of Emporia; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; eight sisters, Mildred Prince, Helen Prince, Lucille Taylor, Marion Wright, Nell Prince, Lorine Bradley, Lily Ruth Mitchell, all of Emporia, and Edna Newsome of Colfax, N.C.; three brothers, David, Lawrence and Parker Slagle, all of Emporia. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday (tonight) at the Echols Funeral Home, Emporia, where funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 27, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Greensville Memorial Cemetery.

Arthelia Jones Loving departed this life on January 24, 2001. She was the widow of Warrenton Theodore Loving. Surviving her are her four children, Warrenton Theodore Loving II, Renee Loving Cottom, Carletta Loving Glaspy and DeWayne Landis Loving; seven grandchildren, Jaric, Vilert, Shaolaine and Curtis Loving, Arlesia and Byron Glaspy, and Helena Arthelia Cottom; a devoted sister, Rosa Edna Crew; devoted cousins; two sons-in-law, Van Cottom and Archie Glaspy Jr.; one daughter-in-law, Jean Loving; one granddaughter-in-law, Shannon Breeden Loving; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Warden Loving and Glenna Branch Loving; two brothers-in-law, Walter and Willie Loving; other relatives and friends, among them a devoted family friend, Averell Young. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Remains will lie in state Saturday 12:30 p.m. at 31st Street Baptist Church, 823 N. 31st St., where funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Dr. Darrell Rollins officiating. Burial Forest Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends will kindly assemble at the funeral home Saturday 12:45 p.m.
