SAUNDERS
Virginia Milbah Saunders passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2001 at Mary Immaculate Hospital. A native of Ivy, she had been a Newport News resident since 1964. A U.S. Air Force veteran, she was in the First Contingent of Women, after the Normandy Invasion. She retired as a librarian for the Hampton school system in 1980, after 16 years of service. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and the Newport News Library Board. She was also on the staff of the Hungarian Embassy for many years, a member of the Association of University Women and a recipient of the Dupont Scholarship and the McIntyre Scholarship. Mrs. Saunders was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Andrew Saunders. Survivors include two sons, Thomas A. Saunders of Sumter, S.C. and Lawrence R. Saunders of Richmond; and her sister, Josephine O. Frierson and her husband, Dr. John H. Frierson, Jr. of Richmond. The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 7, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday in Peninsula Memorial Park.

SCHAFSTEDDE
John A. Schafstedde, 86, died at his home in Manakin, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irmgard Schafstedde. He is survived by two sisters, Elly Woesthoff of Richmond and Annie Klenke of Osnabruck, Germany; and many nieces and nephews. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Benedict Church, 206 N. Belmont Ave., Richmond, Va. 23221 or a favorite charity.

Departed this life November 5, 2001, Mrs. Catherine Straus of 1534 Rogers St. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Funeral notice later.

VAUGHAN
Oscar Green Vaughan, 70, husband of Nellie Catania Green and a retired senior master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, died Sunday, November 4, 2001, at Community Memorial Health Care in South Hill, Va. Survivors other than his wife are three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and John Cotton of Charlottesville, Va., Lynn Vaughan of Gainesville, Fla. and Carmela and Dennis Simonson of Alexandria, Va.; two sons, Richard A. Vaughan of Clarksville and James M. Vaughan of Maui, Hawaii; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Vaughan was preceded in death by a son, Daniel J. Vaughan. A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be said Thursday, November 8, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Clarksville. Celebrating the Mass will be Father Jim Galligher and Father Constantine Silayo. Entombment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington. Visitation will be at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Catherine's Catholic Church or Mecklenburg County Life Saving and Rescue Squad.

WHITLOCK
Shirley N. Whitlock, 69, of Sandston, Va., passed away Sunday, November 4, 2001 at UVA Hospital in Charlottesville. She was a devoted and loving mother who will be missed by her five children, Barbara "Bobbie" Scruggs of Richmond, Patricia Smith and Donald Scruggs of Reedville, Ronald Scruggs of Richmond, Kenneth Scruggs of Sandston. She is also survived by six grandchildren. Her husband, Charles E. Whitlock, preceded her in death. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday (tonight), and where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

BALSBAUGH
Elizabeth "Betsy" Matthews Balsbaugh, age 56, departed this life Thursday, September 26, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. Raised in Gananoque, Ontario, Canada, she was preceded in death by her parents, Jean and Hugh Matthews. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Tod; and daughters, Kim and Meg Balsbaugh. Also survived by her sister-in-law, Peggy and her husband, Gary Powers; as well as many relatives in Canada. Mourning her passing are numerous friends and loved ones, especially Rose Duesberry, Beckie Woody and Debbie Reading; and cousin, Linda Brooks, who was more like a sister. Betsy graduated from Westhampton College and was employed as a social worker for many years. She later worked at the Virginia Home for Boys, and after retiring was an active volunteer. The "Volunteer of the Year" Award was named in her honor. In August, the administration building at the Virginia Home for Boys was named for both Betsy and Tod. Her remains rest at the Bennett Funeral Home, West Chapel, 11020 West Broad St., where the family will receive friends Sunday, September 29 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, September 30. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Virginia Home for Boys, 8716 West Broad St., Richmond, Va. 23294.

BAUGHMAN
Jeffrey Lee Baughman, age 56, of 6407 Lookout Point Circle, Midlothian, Va., died September 27, 2002 at home. He was Director of Career Development with Chesterfield County Public Schools and recently retired. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sandra L. Baughman; one son, Grayson R. Baughman of Midlothian, Va.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Cookie Schaffranek of Morehead City, N.C. and Ms. Holly Jo Leyo of Boston, Mass.; one sister, Mrs. Linda B. Burmeister of Midlothian, Va.; two brothers, Larry G. Baughman of Midlothian, Va. and Michael A. Baughman of Fishers, Ind.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gail F. Baughman of Midlothian, Va. Memorial service will be conducted at Woodlake United Methodist Church, 6601 Woodlake Village Pkwy., Midlothian, Va. on Monday, September 30, 2002 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

BROCK
Bernard L. Brock Sr., 79, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 28, 2002. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Martha B. and Scott Kelly; son, Bernard L. Brock Jr.; sister, Leslie B. Blanks; granddaughter, Nicolette "Nicki" Altice and her husband, Steve; and his great-grandson, Chayton Altice. Mr. Brock was a Past Master of Manchester Masonic Lodge #14, a veteran of World War II and served as a volunteer with the Masonic Service Association at McGuire Veterans Hospital for 36 years. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in Maury Cemetery with Masonic and military honors. Ross V. Cauthorne Jr. of Midlothian passed this life September 27, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Carol A. Cauthorne; two daughters, Emily and Elizabeth; and his son, Scott. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. Graveside services Monday 11 a.m. at Hollywood Cemetery. Departed this life September 26, 2002, Mrs. Audrey Lee Taylor Christian of 3410 McRand Street. She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Christian; two sons, Vance and George Taylor; three grandchildren; mother, Geneva B. Bigger; three sisters, Emma Gardner, Shirley Starke and Dorothy Goode; two brothers, Lawrence and Toney Taylor; one aunt, Elsie Briggs; one uncle, James Briggs; several nieces, nephews and cousins; mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Luke and Irene Christian; six sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law, among them devoted, Leon Starke; one daughter-in-law; and other relatives and friends, among them devoted, Glenda; and one god daughter, Jasmine. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Rev. Otis Mallory officiating. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home 12:45 p.m. Monday.

DICKENS
Lee Edward Dickens passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Delma Hester Dickens. He is survived by a daughter, Dr. Doris Dickens Fickling of Tantallon, Md.; two sons, Mr. Morris Edward Dickens of Washington, D.C., and Ralph Douglas Dickens of Richmond, Va.; a devoted daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gussie Jenkins Dickens of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren, Mr. Keith Edward Dickens, and Mr. Todd Douglas Dickens, both of Washington, D.C., and Dr. Rio Dickens-Celestin and her husband, Joel B. Celestin of Atlanta, Ga.; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Lewis Dickens of Roxboro, N.C.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. His remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, 2700 North Ave. Graveside services will be held Monday, 12 noon, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Rev. Dennis E. Thomas officiating. FLIPPO
Helen Bethea Flippo of Mechanicsville went to be with the Lord September 27, 2002. She is survived by a daughter, Crystal Flippo; her mother, Josephine Bethea; brothers and sisters, Kathleen Jenkins, Jeffrey Bethea, Peggy Thornton, Mary Morrison, James Bethea and Jackie Loving; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Grove Avenue Baptist Church. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grove Avenue Baptist Church Fellowship Fund.

HASKINS
Henrietta N. "Puddin" Haskins of South Hill died September 28, 2002. Survived by her husband, Ben D. Haskins; two sons, Lynn D. Haskins of South Hill and David B. Haskins of Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers, James A Northington of Perkasie, Pa. and Harold O. Northington of Brodnax; two grandsons, Matthew D. Haskins and wife, Stephanie of Fishersville, Va., and Wesley L. Haskins and wife, Erin of South Hill; a great-granddaughter, Morgan E. Haskins also of South Hill. Services Monday, 2 p.m. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. Interment Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation Sunday, 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. KING
Dr. Clark King, 79, professor emeritus of physical education, of Lexington, died Friday, September 27, 2002, in the Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville. Dr. King was born on September 25, 1923, and was a son of the late George King and Myrtle Harris King. A native of Nebraska and a former Marine Corps officer, Dr. King was graduated from Kearney State College in Nebraska in 1944, earned a master's degree from Wyoming University in 1947 and a doctorate in education from the University of Virginia in 1970. On 1942, Dr. King enlisted in a Marine V-12 Officer Procurement Program. In late December 1944, as a member of the 27th Replacement Battalion, he left Hawaii for the invasion of Iwo Jima. On February 27, he became the platoon leader of the 3rd Platoon, B Company, 28th Marines, and served until he was wounded in action and evacuated on March 13. On March 18, 1946, he was released from active duty and subsequently promoted to first lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve to rank from September 30, 1947. Dr. King was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict (1950-52). before resigning in 1954, he served with the rank of captain, commanded A Company and was an assistant football coach of the 1951 Marine Football Team at Camp Lejeune. military honors include a Silver Star, Purple Heart, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He joined the Virginia military Institute faculty in 1952, where he served as an assistant football coach through the 1963 season when he left intercollegiate coaching to become head of the Department of Physical Education. He was the director of Continuing Education from the time that the position was established in 1975, and served as the director of the VMI Summer Session from 1971 to 1991. He retired from VMI on June 30, 1991. He received the VMI Distinguished Service Award in 1983 for his "extraordinary contributions to the life of the Institute". He also received an Honorary VMI Alumnus Degree in 1997. "Being trusted with the responsibility for teaching and training these young men is a high honor and very rewarding. When it is over, it is my hope that it mattered that I worked here."--Dr. Clark King. He was also a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lexington, the Kiwanis Club and the Romeo Club. Dr. King is survived by three children, Lisa King Stratienko of Lookout Mt., Tenn., Clark King Jr. of Farmington, Conn., Elizabeth King of Midlothian; one sister, Barbara Marcy of Chadron, Neb.; and five grandchildren. A reception will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2002 at Moody Hall at VMI, with a memorial service to follow at 10 a.m. at the Jackson Memorial Hall at VMI, with Chaplain Charles Caudill officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Harrison Funeral Home in Lexington.

OLS
George Andrew Ols Jr., born February 25, 1925, of Richmond, died Saturday, September 28, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Ann W. Ols; six children, Elizabeth Killam and her husband, Baker, Miriam Motley and her husband, Dennis, Ann Marie Ols, George A. Ols III and his wife, Donna, Matthew Ols and his wife, Stephney, and Gretchen Hyde and her husband, Scott; nine grandchildren, Katy, Hal, Amy, Sean, Elizabeth, Savanna, Madelyn, Virginia and Georgi. Funeral notice later. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Leukemia Society.

PARKER
Dave Allen Parker, 88, widower of Dorothy Wooldridge Parker, died after a short illness on Friday, September 27, 2002. He is survived by his daughter, June Parker Adams and her husband, Harold W. Adams Jr.; one grandson, Duncan Thompson Adams; and one granddaughter, Meredith Virginia Adams. He is also survived by one nephew, Dr. Charles A. Pendergrass Jr.; one niece, Jean Pendergrass Cline; and one sister-in-law, Joyce Wooldridge Bondurant. He was a charter member of Epiphany Lutheran Church. He graduated from John Marshall High School and received his BSBA from the University of Richmond. He was a retired treasurer of Binswanger Glass Co., and was active in SCORE, and as a volunteer tax accountant for many years. A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 2 p.m. Monday, September 30. Friends may call at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., Sunday, September 29, from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Epiphany Lutheran Church.

PUETZ
Marie W. Puetz, age 76, of Highland Springs, died Friday, September 27, 2002. She was the widow of Donald M. Puetz Sr., and is survived by two sons and their wives, Donald M. and Mae Puetz Jr., and Bruce W. and Debbie Puetz; a foster son and his wife, Richard A. and Linda Lawson; one sister, Jean Parham; foster brother, Wayne Rawlings; a grandson, Travis M. Puetz; a stepgranddaughter, Jennifer Decker; two foster grandchildren, Dawn Marie and Richard A. Lawson; dear friends, Elva Traylor and Ida Erice; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Puetz was retired from Western Auto with over 40 years of service, was an active member of Highland Springs United Methodist Church and a volunteer at Henrico Healthcare. The family will receive friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The family will also receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Farrar Funeral Home in South Hill, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday. Interment Oakwood Cemetery, South Hill.
