HARRIS
Eugene "Ray" Harris of Richmond died Tuesday, September 4, 2001. He was a devoted soul to all that knew him. He is survived by his wife, Linda B. Rice Harris; two children, Kenneth B. Harris of Bear, Del., Julie H. Cabannis of Prince George; two sisters, Louise Donald of Bumpass, Dare Wright of Mechanicsville; two grandchildren, Paula R. and Kenneth R. Harris, both of Bear, Del.; two stepsons, Bryan W. and David W. Rice, both of Richmond. Mr. Harris was instrumental on advancing and supervising construction of Interstate 81, superintendent of construction of Imperial Plaza and Westminster-Canterbury, Richmond. He later became director of the engineering department there until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific. He was an Elder and Sunday School teacher at Lakeside Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma J. Harris. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday (today) and where funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

HURST
Harold Glenn Hurst, age 66, of Chesterfield, died on Tuesday, September 4, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Effie Osborne Hurst; his mother, Ruth of Richmond; sons, Paul of Pensylvania, Timothy of California and Nelson Osborne of Tennessee; daughters, Kathy Bauwens of Richmond, Pam Paulsen of Keysville, Jessie Klase of Pennsylvania, Jennifer Koser of Pennsylvania, Sindy Ankeney of Charlottesville, Vickie Hurst of Cumberland, Bridget Redman of Amelia, Katrina Lankford of Georgia, Patricia Cave of Amelia and Pamela Osborne of Tennessee; brothers, Ray of Georgia and Bennie of Maryland; sisters, Jean Moomey of Nebraska, Mary Breeneman and Ceceilia Farmer, both of Richmond; 26 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A chapel service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, September 7. Burial to follow at Mattoax Church Cemetery. Visiting on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St., Amelia. JENKS
Stuart Carlyle Jenks, of Farnham, Va., died Monday, September 3, 2001 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was a retired lt. colonel in the United States Marine Corps, having served in World War II on Okinawa and in China, and during the Korean War, retiring in 1982. Mr. Jenks also had a career with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad for 15 years, and the IBM Corporation for 24 years. He graduated from T.J. High School. Mr. Jenks attended the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., but due to circumstances of war, he completed his education at Duke University from which he and his wife, Mary, graduated in 1947. In addition to his wife of 53 years, Mary Saum Jenks, he is survived by his daughter, Pamela Elton Jenks of Raleigh, N.C.; and his son, Stuart C. Jenks Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. He was a member of the Citadel Club of Greater Washington and the Citadel Development Foundation. His Citadel ring was one of the less than ten that did not have a year on it due to his sudden departure because of the war. He was an active member of St. Mary's Whitechapel Episcopal Church, Lively, Va., where he served on their Vestry and as Junior Warden. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 9 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Whitechapel Episcopal Church, 2940 Whitechapel Rd., Lancaster, Va. 22503 (corner of Route 354 & 201). Visitation will be at the church on Saturday, September 8 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Mary's Whitechapel Memorial Fund noted in memory of Stuart Jenks. The family will be at their residence.

JOHNSON
Retired Brigadier General Thomas A. Johnson, 75, passed away September 5, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Dolores Booth Johnson. He is survived by two sons, Thomas A. (Tad) Johnson and Bruce S. Johnson and daughter-in-law, Deborah Z. Johnson; two grandchildren, Nicole Lauren Johnson and Bradley Thomas Johnson. He also leaves behind his cousin, Hilda Johnson. General Johnson served his country for over 50 years. In World War II, he served as a member of the the Third Army, commanded by General George S. Patton, where he was in the famous Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he studied in Paris at The Sorbonne University. He then served as a correspondent covering the Nurenburg War Criminal Trials as a journalist. He earned his Bachelor Degree in Art and Science and his Masters Degree in History from the University of Richmond. General Johnson continued to serve by founding the U.S. Army's logistics magazine, Army Logistician, where he was the editor-in-chief for 20 years. He taught political science at what is now Virginia Commonwealth University. He was founder and president of the Fort Lee Credit Union. General Johnson left the magazine, but continued to serve as the state Director of Selective Service for Virginia after being appointed by the governor, until his retirement in 1997. For his service, General Johnson received many awards and accolades, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 6. A graveside service with full military honors will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 7, at Westhampton Memorial Park, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife. Virginia has lost a native son who will be missed by many and forgotten by few.

KING
Billy King, 69, of Newtown, Va., died September 3, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was manager of King's General Store in Sparta, Va. Survived by his wife, Maude; four sons, seven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; four sisters, Clara Graves, Mary Bullock and Shelley Brooks, all of Newtown, Va. and Lenora Dabney of Florida; two brothers, George King Sr. of California and Rev. George D. King Jr. of Texas. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 8, at the Jerusalem Baptist Church, Sparta, Va. Remains can be viewed beginning at 12 noon at the church. Visitation 12 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal, Va. Interment church cemetery.

KNIGHT
Harriet S. Knight of Cobbs Creek died at her home, "Peach Croft," on Wednesday, September 5, 2001 following a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Knight. She is survived by two daughters, Martha Wilson Knight and Butler S. Knight of Mathews; a son, Charles E. Knight Jr. of Richmond; four grandchildren, Daniel Leith Nye, Alice Coleman Nye, Charles Edward Knight III and Laura Elizabeth Knight; and a sister, Elizabeth Stubbs Mott of Gloucester. She was an active member of Kingston Parish, Mathews. She was an honorary member of the Mathews Garden Club and her love of flowers could be seen throughout "Peach Croft." In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to either the Kingston Parish Building Fund or the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad. A graveside service will take place at Christ Episcopal Church, Kingston Parish on Saturday, September 8, 2001 at 11 a.m. to be conducted by the Reverend Elisa Wheeler. Arrangements are under the care of Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews.

LILES
Robert Conyers Liles, 66, of Roanoke, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, a man of quiet grace filled with a positive radiating spirit, touching all with his dignity and strength of love, entered a new life on Tuesday, September 4, 2001. Remaining on earth is his wife of 40 years, Sandra Liles; their daughters, Lisa O'Hare and Anna Brizendine; grandchildren, J. Killian O'Hare, Kyle Brizendine and David Brizendine; two brothers, William B. Liles Jr. and Spencer Liles. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2001 at Oakey's North Chapel, Roanoke, Va., with the Rev. Alexis Haddix officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Oakey's North Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Cumberland Rescue Squad, Cumberland, Va. 23040 or the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, 500 Morris Avenue, Springfield, N.J. 07081.

LOFTIS
Belva Marie Loftis, 87, passed away September 5, 2001. She was the widow of James Melvin Loftis. She is survived by three daughters, Bernice L. Parker of Richmond, Betty A. Loftis of Richmond and Mary E. Hawker of Atlanta; two sons, James M. Loftis, Jr. of Richmond and Donald B. Loftis of Greensboro. Also two grandchildren, Jennifer L. Clement and Rhonda H. Hollison; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by five sisters, Frances Yarboro of Roxboro, N.C., Laura Rice of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Carol Stevenson of Belton, Texas, Jean Maynard of Kernersville, N.C. and Kay Hobgood of Oxford, N.C.; and one brother, Wayland Loftis of Virginia Beach. The remains rest at Brooks Funeral Home, South Boston, Va. where the family will receive friends Friday, September 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. and where funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 8 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

MADISON
Frances B. Madison, 87, of Richmond, died Tuesday, September 4, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Emmett E. Madison; her daughter, Esther M. Ward; her son, Clarence M. Madison; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Madison was retired from the Department of Motor Vehicles. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and the African Violet Society. Her remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and where services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 7. Interment in Westhampton Memorial Park.

McKENIZE
Marjorie Parker McKenize, of 7104 Coachman Lane, Richmond, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 4, 2001. She was 88 years old from Mount Landing, Essex County, Va. She is preceded in death by her husband, Earl E. McKenize; a brother, Waller J. Parker; two sisters, Nellie P. Maddrea and Lucy Bowers. She is survived by her sister, Virginia P. Jordan of Richmond; nephew, Dr. Jerry P. Jordan and wife, Patricia of Nathalie, Va.; her great-niece and four great-nephews.

MELTON
Bernard Alvin Melton Sr., beloved husband, father and "Pop Pop" of Mineral, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Faris Alley Melton; two sons, Bernie Melton and his wife, Debbie; Scott Melton and his wife, Lois; daughter, Pamela Bradshaw and her husband, Les; brother, Grover L. "Kin" Melton; sister, Dorothy M. "Dolly" Brannan; five grandchildren, McKenzie, Grayson, Scottie, Kacie and Tanner. Family will receive friends at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 7 at Deep Run Baptist Church, 10907 Three Chopt Rd. Interment in church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Hospital.

MITCHELL
Alma Page Mitchell, 78, of Highland Springs departed this life September 4, 2001. She is survived by five daughters, Anita Mitchell, Patricia Webb, Thelma Ward, Annette Watson and Phyllis Pair; one son, James Tingle; one sister, Leona Nash; two brothers, James Harris and Bernard Harris; 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, the fifth generation of girls. A memorial service will be held September 8 at 12 p.m. at 409 Evanrude Lane, Sandston, Va. 23150, Pastor Victor Schmick officiating.

NORFLEET
Nelle Austin Norfleet, age 78, of Suffolk, Va., died September 1, 2001. She was the widow of H. Grady Norfleet. Survived by daughter, Trudy E. Norfleet of Richmond, Va. A celebration of life service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001, at Oakland Christian Church. NORMAN
Julian Gardner Norman, 90, of West Point, Va., died Wednesday, September 5, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva "Susie" Haynes Norman. He is survived by his children, Lacy, Dennis and Claudia Norman of West Point and Keith Norman of Clifton Forge; three sisters, Olivia Dallare, Margaret Johnson and Ella Mae Nealis, all of Richmond; three brothers, Willis Norman of Richmond, Sidney Norman of Rockville and Charles E. Norman of Hanover; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Gault and Delma Haynes; three grandchildren, Sherri, Stacey, Christian; a great-grandson, Logan; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Vincent Funeral Home. Burial in Sunny Slope Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Departed this life Saturday, September 1, 2001, Mr. George "LeGrande" Norrell, of Richmond. He is survived by his wife, Sheila Norrell; children, Christopher and Jasmine Bibbs-Norrell; brother, George W. Crawford Jr.; sister, Linda Johnson; devoted cousin, Terry Jackson; a devoted friend, Nathaniel McClendon; other relatives and friends. O'BRYAN
Mildred C. O'Bryan, 89, of Chsterfield, passed away September 4, 2001. The widow of Francis V. O'Bryan, she was preceded in death by a son, Lt. Col. Michael O'Bryan and is survived by her children, Carol Thorpe and her husband, Curtis, Larry J. O'Bryan and his wife, Gretchen, D. Wayne O'Bryan and his wife, Margaret and Neal O'Bryan; daughter-in-law, Sue O'Bryan; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Mrs. O'Bryan was a resident of Lucy Corr Nursing Home and a member of McGuire Park Methodist Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and where a funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Annie C. Payne, 92, of Richmond, departed this life September 2, 2001. She was the widow of Alfred T. Payne. She is survived by three daughters, Irene Yarbrough (Joseph) of Philadelphia, Pa., Alfreda Morris (Rudolph), Norieta Anderson (Louis); a son, Alfred Payne (Mary), all of Richmond; eight grandchildren, Lisa Priestly of New York City, Aaron and Julie Yarbrough of Atlanta, Ga., Wanda Johnson, Heather Morris, Darryl and Gary Watts, and Shana Watson; nine great-grandchildren, Christopher Yarbrough, Thair, T'ana and Tapera Johnson, Michiah, Ashley, and Parker Watts, Quinton and Kyra Watson; a sister, Louise Forrester; brother, Myles R. Cunningham Sr. (Wilhemina); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Miss Julia Powers, formerly of Richmond, died Monday, September 3, 2001, in Danville Regional Medical Center. Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Calvary Baptist Church. Miss Powers is a retired social worker for the City of Richmond. Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

RAMSEY
James W. "Jim" Ramsey, 52, of Mechanicsville and formerly of Charles, City, Va. died Wednesday, September 5, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Ann Tignor Ramsey; a son, Philip Ramsey; a daughter, Renee Hamlett; a sister, Beth Chandler; and eight grandchildren. Mr. Ramsey was preceded in death by a daughter, Christine. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, corner of 301 and Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Hospital.
