Funeral services for Garland Brown will be held Friday (today) 12 p.m. at Cedar Street Baptist Church of God. Relatives and friends assemble at the church 11:30 a.m.

CARTER
Departed this life October 3, 2000, Mr. Gilbert M. Carter Sr. of Richmond. He is survived by his wife, Thelma O. Carter; one son, Gilbert M. Carter Jr.; one daughter, Angela Fay Robinson; one grandson, Darryl Robinson Jr.; five brothers, seven sisters, a host of nieces and nephews, one aunt, two uncles; one son-in-law, Darryl Robinson Sr.; host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where the family will receive friends Friday 7 to 8 p.m. Remains will lie in state Saturday 2 p.m. at Rock Hill Baptist Church, Hanover Co., where funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Rev. Phillip Knight officiating. Burial church cemetery.

COURTNEY
John Irving Courtney died October 3, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Mary M. Courtney; his sons, J. Ronald Courtney and Daniel S. Courtney and his wife, Deborah Courtney; sister, DeLana E. Courtney; four grandchildren, Kendall Courtney, Jeanne Courtney, Wendy Courtney and Kevin Courtney; one great-grandchild, Kayla Courtney. A memorial service will be held at Ginter Park United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Friday, October 6, 2000. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ginter Park United Methodist Church or the Hospice of Central Virginia.

DEANS
Paskel "Pat" E. Deans, 77, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on October 5, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Nina Deans; daughters, Delores Bisbee, Patty Shaw, Annette Wood; sons, Danny, Wade and Gary Deans; sister, Pauline Blackburn; brother, Sheldon Deans, 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). His service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment at Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Hospice of Central Virginia, 5540 Falmouth St., Suite 307, Richmond, Va. 23230.

FLEWELLEN
James Wambersie Flewellen of Saluda and Irvington died Thursday, October 5, 2000 at Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury following a long battle with Alzheimer’s, Cancer and Diabetes.. He was born February 14, 1914 in Barboursville, Virginia, was the son of the late James Persons and Mary Rawlins Wambersie Flewellen and was raised at Charlton in Orange County. After attending VMI Jim joined the Virginia State Highway Department in October 1937 leaving only briefly to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In July 1976 he retired as assistant resident engineer for the Fredericksburg district in Saluda. Jim was a devoted husband and father, an avid turkey hunter, gardener, fisherman and golfer, as well as an accomplished horseman in his early years. He was a parishioner and had served as Senior Warden at Christ Episcopal Church, Christchurch, Virginia. Mr. Flewellen was a member and past master of the Urbanna Lodge #83, A.F. & A.M. and Urbanna Royal Arch Chapter #59. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Elinor Attix Bice Flewellen, formerly of Dover, Delaware; a son, John Edward "Jack" Flewellen of Fredericksburg; a daughter, Mary Carol Yoshino of Hamilton, New York; a sister, Alice Parker Flythe of Fredericksburg; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Christ Church, Middlesex County on Saturday, October 7 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda, and where Masonic memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 6767 Forest Hill Ave., Suite 270, Richmond, Va. 23225 or the American Cancer Society, c/o Betty Page Bristow, P.O. Box 22, Urbanna, Va. 23175.

GALPERIN
Basya Zinger Galperin, 88, died Wednesday, October 4, 2000, in Raleigh, N.C. Basya was the daughter of the late Meyer and Sora Hanna Zinger. She was born September 29, 1912 in Polatsk, Belarus. She was employed for 40 years at Svetlana in Leningrad, Russia. This survivor of two world wars will be remembered for her strength of will and character. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1980 with her husband, children and grandchildren. Her husband, Aaron, preceded her in death in 1985. Left to remember her are her children, Galina Galperin Gutkin and Vladimir Galperin, both of Raleigh; grandchildren, Boris Gutkin and partner, Rachel Collins, Emilia Gutkin Huntley, her husband, George, and their son Samuel. A graveside service will be held at Sir Moses Montefiore Cemetery in Richmond, Va., at 11 a.m. Friday, October 6.

GOBBLE
Constance E. (Connie) Gobble, 79, of Midlothian, passed away Thursday, October 5, 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis L. (Dick) Gobble and is survived by her daughter, Debbie G. Lowery; granddaughter, Stephanie R. Lowery; and sister-in-law, Etta Glover and her husband, Eugene of Meadowview, Va. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday (today). Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday in Dale Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia, 5540 Falmouth St., Suite 307, Richmond, Va. 23230.

GRAY
Mary Alice Edwards Gray, 71, of Franklin, died October 5, 2000. Born in Northampton County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Claude Thomas and Mary Rebecca Askew Edwards and the widow of Edward Johnny Gray. She was retired from Town and County Department Store and worked at All Sewn Up following her retirement. She was a Baptist. Survivors include her son, Thomas B. Gray and his wife, Karen of Chesterfield; two sisters, Estelle E. Harrell of Jackson, N.C. and Barbara E. Outland of Fayetteville, N.C.; two grandsons, Jeff and Blake Gray; two sisters-in-law, Daisy Morgan of Louisville, Ky. and Jean Edwards of Roanoke Rapids, N.C,; two brothers-in-law, Judson Jilcott of Roxobel, N.C. and R.L. Gray of Johnsonville, S.C.; several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Southhampton Memorial Park with the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home and suggests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Ruth Petty, 116 Southampton Road, Franklin, Va. 23851.

HARDY
Howard W. (Sonny) Hardy Jr., 57, of Richmond went to be with the Lord Thursday, October 5, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Lyn Hardy; two sons and their wives, Chip and Kristen and Andy and Amy Hardy; a grandchild, Bailey Hardy; his father, Howard W. Hardy Sr. Mr. Hardy was a charter member of Cornerstone Christian Church, an Army veteran and lifetime member of the V.F.W. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Friday), Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Cornerstone Christian Church, P.O. Box 4890, Glen Allen, Va. 23058.

HARRIS
Nellie Taylor Harris, 71, departed this life and was received by her Lord on Tuesday, October 3, 2000. She was preceded in in death by her parents, Earnest Irvin "Sam" and Gracie Moore Taylor of Shumansville, Va. Mrs. Harris is remembered with love and affection by her beloved husband of 51 years, Melvin Maurice Harris; son and daughter-in-law, Steven Maurice and Mary Elizabeth Harris and their son, her grandson, Sean Christopher Harris; daughter, Kathleen Gay Harris; and son, Timothy Taylor Harris, all of Richmond. Also cherishing her memory are her sister and brother-in-law, Lucy Mae and Earl Cooper of Milford, Va.; their children, her nephews and niece, Irvin Earl Cooper and Dianna C. Chinault of Milford and David Cooper of Bowling Green, Va.; and many treasured friends and relatives. Having grown up in and been baptized as a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Milford (formerly Shumansville), Va., Nell was a longtime member of the Ridge Baptist Church in Richmond. She was also a member of the Greenbrier Hills Garden Club and its subsequent friendship club. Her love, gentleness, devotion and quiet strength were blessings in the life of her family. Her family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where funeral services will be held Friday, October 6, 2000 at 11 a.m. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. INGS
Ravenell Ings Jr. of 3305 Hawkins Rd. died October 3, 2000. Surviving are two daughters, Rose M. Ings and Cynthia I. Banks; two granddaughters, Ashlie L. and Nia A. Banks; a sister, Mary Alice Ings of New York; three nephews, three nieces; a brother-in-law, McDonald Bradley; a sister-in-law, Lillie Berry; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott’s Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where the family will receive friends Friday 7 to 8 p.m. After 10 a.m. Saturday, October 7, remains will rest in Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church, 7204 Bethlehem Rd., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Rev. T. J. (Junie) James, age 86, of Richmond, widower of Alma T. James, died Thursday, October 5, 2000. He is survived by his sister, Viola J. Herndon of Richmond; his brother, Herbert L. James of Mechanicsville; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. James was retired from Nolde’s Brothers Bakery. Remains rest Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

JOHNSON
Departed this life October 3, 2000, Mrs. Laura Bolling Johnson of 3218 Jeter Ave. She was preceded in death by her husband, Halsey T. Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria J. Coleman; two grandchildren, Milondra and Milton B. Coleman Jr. (Valerie); four great-grandchildren, Mario, Kenneth, Lorel and Shorel; four sisters, Marie Jasper, Annie Sayles, Dorine Taylor and Hazel Watson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. from Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church, 1408 W. Frances W. Johnson, 80, widow of Granville E. (Johnny) Johnson, passed away October 4, 2000. She is survived by one daughter, Sharlyn Banner; and two sons, Dr. G. Woodworth (Woody) Johnson and Gregory Johnson. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Charlie, Jonathan and Lyn Williams and Justin, Melanie and Drew Johnson. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday (today), and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. KIRK
Alice Lyons Kirk, 96, of Richmond, died Wednesday, October 4, 2000. She was the daughter of the late James Bernard and Lily Forstmann Kirk. She is survived by her sister, Mary Kirk Eubank; two nieces, ten nephews, many grandnieces and grandnephews; their children and her dear friends, Helen Kasten McCarthy and Grace Laurens Cosby. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends Saturday from 12 to 1 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, October 7 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Calvary. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Benedict’s Catholic Church or the Massey Cancer Center.

Margie Pousher Leake of 1233 Admiral Gravely Blvd. entered eternal rest October 2, 2000. Cherishing her memory two daughters, Franshuna and Marquita Leake; one granddaughter, C’Asia Leake; four sisters, two brothers; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, one devoted, Daniel Hillard. Carroll (Leroy) Lynch, formerly of Richmond, Va., went home to be with the Lord October 5, 2000. Preceded in death by his mother and father, Woodrow and Beatrice V. Jones. Survived by his son, Rick; and five grandchildren, one brother and five sisters. Services will be private.

MALLORY
Linda Mae Shelton Mallory of Montpelier, Va., succumbed to an extended illness on October 3, 2000. She was the wife of Pastor William A. Mallory and First Lady of Shiloh Baptist Church, Palmyra, Va. Linda was born October 26, 1952 to the late Joseph R. Shelton and Lucy Jane Shelton Jones. Also surviving are two children, William Christopher and LaShelle deVerne Mallory; three grandchildren, Gabriella Mallory, Desmond Montgomery and Jaden Athey; a loving mother and stepfather, Lucy Jane Shelton Jones and Robert E. Jones; grandfather, John D. Thaniels; four sisters, Isadore Cosby, Jane Delois Ferguson, JoAnne Anderson and Carolyn S. Johnson; father-in-law, Arthur Mallory; mother-in-law, Ruth Mallory; eight brothers-in-law, Deacon James Cosby, Jerry Ferguson, John Anderson, Aubrey Johnson, Ronald Mallory, Rev. Jerry Mallory, John Winston, Kenneth Banks; four sisters-in-law, Sandra Winston, Patricia Banks, Earlene Mallory, Rev. Doris Mallory; and many other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland.
