HORTON
Dorothy Tuten Horton, widow of Robert O. Horton, passed away on November 13, 2001. She was born in 1906 in Furman, S.C., a daughter of the late Eliza Stokes and S.W. Tuten. Mrs. Horton had been a member of First Baptist Church since 1941 and the Palmer Sunday School Class. She was a retiree of the Richmond Public Library. Dorothy gave of herself to everyone and was known as an avid bridge player. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Renee and John Atkinson and June and Philip McKown; along with seven granddaughters and their husbands, Lydia S. and Bucky Harrison, Mary Kay M. and Ken Cyrus, Linda S. and Mike Carroll, Diane M. Moseley, Martha M. and Lewis Kelley, Mary Ellen M. and Mark Fines, all of Richmond and Lesley A. and Ray Maceyak of Norfolk; also nine great-grandchildren, Zachary and Katherine Harrison, Patrick Carroll, Sean and Mary Virginia Kelley, Abby and Cory Fines, Connor and Kelsey Maceyak; and many devoted nieces, nephews and friends of all ages. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, November 15, in the Chapel of First Baptist Church. Interment in Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Food Pantry of First Baptist Church or to your favorite charity.

JOHNSON
Mrs. Peggy Dillon Johnson, widow of Malcolm Proctor Johnson, died Tuesday, November 13, 2001. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Jed McLaughlin and is survived by her daughter, Bonnie McLaughlin Corcoran. Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mason T. Dillon of Falmouth and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Tappahannock. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, November 15, 2001 at Oak Hill Cemetery, 1902 Plank Rd., Fredericksburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. John's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 336, Tappahannock, Va. 22560.

KENNY
Lucille J. Kenny of 1302 Carlisle Ave., died November 10, 2001. Surviving are her loving husband, Purcell Kenny; a devoted sister, Mrs. Lillie J. Oatney; a brother, Emanuel Johnson Sr.; several nieces and nephews, three devoted, Viola Quarles, Delores Smith and Patsy Boone; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. After 12 noon Thursday remains will rest at Tenth Street Baptist Church, 23rd St. at Fairmount Ave., where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Rev. William E. Powell officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

KOSTYK
Anna H. Kostyk, died Monday, November 12, 2001. She is survived by her son, Myron Kostyk; her daughter and son-in-law, Irena K. and Edward Troxell; sister, Sonia Yanchek; brother, Peter Hentysz; grandchildren, Valerie Kostyk, Joseph Troxell and Sonia T. Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Shannan and Lauren Mitchell. The family will receive friends at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Wednesday followed by the Parastos. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Comboni Missionary Sisters Chapel, 1307 Lakeside Avenue. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

LEWIS
Mrs. Irene Lewis, 71, of Stony Creek, widow of Wilbur T. Lewis Sr., died Monday, November 12, 2001. She is survived by one son, Wilbur T. Lewis Jr. and wife, Sylvia Lynne of Spotsylvania; one daughter, Deborah L. Bain and husband, Johnny of Dinwiddie; four grandchildren, Stacy Allen Lewis, Joseph Thomas Lewis, Erin Frances Bain and Andrew Lewis Bain; one sister, Estelle Morris of Colonial Heights; and brother, William J. "Jabo" Ellis of Sussex. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday (tonight) at Owen Funeral Home in Jarratt, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, November 15, 2001. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sappony Baptist Church or the Dinwiddie Branch of the Appomattox Regional Library.

McCLARY
Alexander (Rumpy) McClary Jr. of Ashland entered eternal rest November 11, 2001. Cherishing his memory are his devoted wife, Dorothy McClary; two daughters, Pammy Dorch and Tonia Harding (Anthony); one son, Philip Johnson; grandchildren, Damond, Bryant, Shanice Harding; mother, Andrea McClenton Halison; father, Alexander McClary Sr. (Alfreda); grandmother, Bessie Gray of Greensboro, N.C.; sisters, Aretha Booze (Clarence), Stephanie McClary; brother, Anson McClary (Elizabeth); nieces, Amber and Amanda Booze; nephews, Michael Booze, Alexander and Anson McClary Jr.; a host of aunts and uncles, other relatives and friends. A eulogistic service will be conducted Wednesday (today), 1 p.m., at the Woodville Church of the Nazarene, 21st and Selden Sts., Pastor Glynn D. Lawson officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. McDONALD
Joseph B. McDonald, 78, of Chesterfield County, died November 12, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Virginia McDonald; and three daughters, Beverly Whitlock, Barbara McDonald and Margery McDonald. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 17, at 2 p.m. at Central Baptist Church, 1500 Courthouse Rd., Richmond, Va. 23236. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund, Central Baptist Church.

MICKENS
Departed this life November 10, 2001, James Mickens. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Beavers Mickens. He is survived by two daughters, Diane Robinson and Linda Harris; stepdaughter Lena Carter; seven granddaughters, six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosa M. Stevens and Mary M. Beavers; brother, Robert Mickens; stepmother, Iris Mickens; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; two devoted cousins, Alice Hawkins and Rosa Lee Lewis. NEWSOME
Mrs. Valerie Starke Newsome, 38, of Emporia, died Tuesday, November 13, 2001. She is survived by her husband, W.C. Newsome Jr; two daughters, Lori Ann Newsome and Amanda Marie Newsome; two sisters, Penny S. Holland and Barbara S. Wyatt; one brother, Nelson T. Starke; her mother, Karne Gregory; her father, Donald Starke; and 11 nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Owen Funeral Home in Jarratt, where the funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2001. Interment Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Emporia.

POPE
Mary Worrell Pope, 98, died Monday, November 12, 2001. She was a lifelong resident of Southampton County and the widow of Charlie B. Pope. Survivors include a daughter, Thelma P. Pulley; a son, Charlie B. Pope Jr.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A graveside funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday in the Capron, Va. cemetery.

ROBERTSON
Mary Taylor Robertson of Richmond, widow of the Honorable Walter S. Robertson, died Monday, November 12, 2001. Born in Henderson, N.C. in 1899, she was the only daughter of the late Jaquelin P. Taylor and Catherine W. Taylor. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jaquelin E. Taylor. She is survived by two sons, Walter S. Robertson Jr. of Charles City, Jaquelin T. Robertson of New York, N.Y.; a daughter, Mrs. Herbert A. Claiborne Jr. of Richmond; seven grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, November 16, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Interment in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Valentine Museum or the Richmond Ballet.

SMITH
Mrs. Lottie "Ann" Rutherford Smith, age 71, of Richmond, died Sunday, November 11, 2001. She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carter W. Rutherford; and brothers, Stuart, Pete and Earl Rutherford. She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Paul Julian Smith; her daughters, Cindy S. Osborne and Becky A. Smith; son-in-law, Bruce Osborne; granddaughters, Callie, Kelsey and Wren Osborne; sister, Ruth R. Babcock of Westerly, R.I.; aunt, Margaret R. Yancey of Petersburg; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith was a lifelong native of Richmond. She was 1948 graduate of T.J. High School and former employee of C&P Telephone company. Funeral services will be held Wednesday 9:30 a.m. at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens, 12609 Patterson Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.

SZILASSY
Alex Szilassy of Hungary passed away November 2, 2001. Funeral services will be held at the Korean Canaan Church, 8001 Walmsley Blvd., on Friday, November 16 at 5 p.m. He is survived by his mother, Cornelia; sisters, Judy and Cornelia; aunt, Gabinani Takacsy; children, Alex and Sandy; other family members and friends from both local and international communities. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Korean Canaan Church.

TACKETT
Helen Owen Tackett, 76, of Petersburg, formerly of Chester, died Tuesday, November 13, 2001, at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell. She was the daughter of the late Clarence Franklin and Helen Virginia Green Trump. Mrs. Tackett was a retired food service worker for Chesterfield County Schools, a longtime member of Chester Baptist Church, and a member of the Bensley Bermuda Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Claude Gooch Owen; and her second husband, Lewis Harmon Tackett; as well as a son, John William Owen of Joplin, Missouri. Mrs. Tackett is survived by her husband, Robert Morgan Jr. of Chesapeake; a son, Thomas F. Owen and his wife, Elizabeth of Fredericksburg; a daughteer, Ann Lane and her husband, Scott of Powhatan; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Thursday, November 15, 2001 at 2 p.m. in Crewe Cemetery, Crewe, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions to be made to the Bensley Bermuda Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 657, Chester, Va. 23831.

THOMPSON
Johnnie C. Thompson, 76, of Chesterfield, passed away November 12, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mildred E. Thompson; daughters, Linda T. Cox, Susan T. Cordle and her husband, Sterling; his twin brother, James Thompson of Danville, and brothers, William Thompson of Catlett, Va. and Samuel Thompson of Danville; sisters, Sallie Adkins of Reidsville, N.C., Ada Bennett of Ringold, Va., Virginia Walker of Ruffin, N.C.; grandsons, Trey and Jonathan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Thompson was a World War II Army veteran. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (today). Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday in Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad or Hospice of Central Virginia.

WORTHINGTON
Mary Frances Worthington, 91, born in Washington, D.C., died Monday, November 12, 2001 at Lucy Corr Village. Widow of Robert Kent Worthington, she is survived by a niece, Elizabeth Falconer and her husband, James C.; and two great-nephews, James C. Jr. and Robert C. Falconer. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 15 at 1 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Park. The family is being serviced by J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Chester.

BARNES
Benjamin Ellis Barnes of 2105 Fairfax Ave. departed this life Sunday, July 15, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral notice later.

BAROWITZ
Grace Barowitz, 93, of Richmond, died July 15, 2001. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara and husband, Louis. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

BRANNAN
Marshall Greer Brannan, age 85, formerly of Deltaville, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at McGuire Hospital. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the V.F.W. Post. Survivors include one son, Wayne Brannan and his wife, Valerie; two grandchildren, Jamie Brannan, and Kathy Belanger and her husband, Maurice Sr.; one great-granddaughter, Beth Brannan; and one brother, Pete Brannan and his wife, Val. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 16. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the East Hanover Vol. Rescue Squad or to the Lower Middlesex Vol. Fire Dept.
