Mell Frances Cole Matney
GRUNDY -- Mell Frances Cole Matney, 76, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. She was born in Whitewood, Va., a daughter of the late J.G. and Katherine Dorton Cole. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Harman Memorial Baptist Church. She was a member of the first graduating class at Whitewood High School and attended Roanoke National Business College. She was a retired registered medical secretary, employed by Grundy Hospital and Buchanan General Hospital for 38 years. Surviving are her husband, Joehene Edison Matney; a daughter, Frances M. Ward of Richlands; three sons, Edison "Sonny" Matney and Mark Joe Matney, both of Grundy, and Harold B. Matney of Harman, Va.; four sisters, Margaret Altizer and Recca Dye, both of Jewell Ridge, Va., Helen Justice of Phyllis, Ky., and Brook Jones of Fredericksburg, Va.; three brothers, Joe G. Cole of Bland, Va., and Grat V. Cole and Grady M. Cole, both of Jewell Ridge; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Don Pope and evangelist Michael Trent will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va. Mrs. Matney was also preceded in death by a son, Ben Lee Matney; and five brothers, Harry, George, Barnes, Paul and Robert Cole. Among survivors are a son-in-law, Cleon Ward of Richlands; two daughters-in-law, Mary Matney of Grundy and Peggy Matney of Harman; a special sister-in-law, Goldie Yates of Wise, Va.; grandchildren Russell Matney, Greg Matney, Steve Matney, Michele Cole and Cleressa Ward; and a great-grandchild, Chelsea Cole. Mrs. Matney was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. Pallbearers will be Russell Matney, Steve Matney, Greg Matney, Joe Keene and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Farmer, Charles M. "Mel" Keen, Dr. Thomas Penn, Dr. J.G. Patel, Dr. Thomas McDonald, Jack Buchanan, Charles Perkins, Isaac Coleman, W.H. Trivett, the Rev. Otis Musick, the Rev. Jeff Slone, the Rev. Stan Parris, evangelist Mike Rife and Harman Memorial Baptist Church Senior Womens Sunday School Class. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home, where services will be held Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

Harold B. Dotson
GORDONSVILLE, Va. -- Harold B. Dotson, 60, formerly of the Slate Creek area of Grundy, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Roland Dotson and Laura Slone Dotson Ward Dobbins. He lived in Buchanan County most of his life before moving to Gordonsville and was a member of Grundy Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving two terms in Vietnam. He was a disabled coal miner and the widower of Margie Griffey Dotson. Surviving are a daughter, Cheryl D. Sage of Gordonsville; three sons, Harold Roland Dotson and Charles Robert Dotson, both of Doran, Va., and Donald Lee Dotson of Gordonsville; three sisters, Betty Wade of Anaheim, Calif., Nell Spurlock of Kentucky and Mary Ellen Conner of Canton, Ohio; four brothers, Jesse Dotson of Malvern, Ohio, Donald Dotson and David Ward, both of Canton, Ohio, Jeffery Steven Ward of East Sparta, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Grundy Church of Christ. Evangelists Clarence Greenleaf, Tom Cooper and Michael Trent will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill with military rites by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Mr. Dotson was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Bridget Marie Sage; a sister, Gertrude Fletcher; two brothers, Randall Dotson and an infant brother. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Friends may call at 5 p.m. Friday at the church, where services will be held at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Terry Lee Stiltner
GRUNDY -- Terry Lee Stiltner, 28, of the Leemaster area, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, from injuries sustained in a automobile accident. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a son of Robert L. and Georgia Blankenship Stiltner of Grundy. He was a truck driver for Newberry Trucking Co. Surviving, besides his parents, are his wife, Patricia Ratliff Stiltner; a stepson, Kenneth Ratliff of Grundy; and a brother, Robert Allen Auville of Grundy. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church No. 1 on Poplar Creek, Route 2, Grundy, by Grundy Funeral Home. Elders James McClanahan, Jimmy Blankenship, Billy Campbell, Johnny Paul McClanahan and Frank Newsome will officiate. Burial will be in Stiltner Cemetery, near the church on Poplar Creek. Mr. Stiltner was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Conley and Pearl Blankenship; and paternal grandparents, Freelin and Sarah Stiltner. Among survivors are six aunts and two uncles. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Ratliff, Robbie Duty and cousins. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Saturday at the church, where services will be held Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Luchion Carlos (LC) Hale
OAKWOOD, Va. -- Mr. Luchion Carlos (LC) Hale, 62, passed away Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital following a long illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Willie E. and Zella Lewis Hale. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Buford Hale. Mr. Hale is survived by seven sisters: Ms. Dolly Fern Hale of Richlands, Va., Mrs. Keister (Narcie) Skeens of Grundy, Va., Mrs. Ray (Joyce) Ross of Bristol, Tenn., Mrs. Ersel (Darlis) Armes of Lebanon, Va., Mrs. Jimmie (Sue) Meadows of Cedar Bluff, Va., Mrs. Bill (Maxine) Perry of Grundy, and Mrs. Polly Riley of Bristol, Va.; seven nephews; eight nieces; and also survived by a little friend, Ms. Ashley Deel; and a host of other friends and neighbors. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain, Va., with Rev. Ancil Childress, Rev. T.R. Stump and Rev. James Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardnes Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Bradley Armes, Keith Armes, Jimmy Meadows Jr., Billy Perry Jr., Brian Perry, Terry Ross, Johnny Ross, Billy Winchester, Ricky Deel, Elmer Yates, Robbie Yates, Chris Jordna and Tony Counts. Honorary pallbearers will be Neaton Hale, Cleve Rife, Junior (Fly) Whitt, Ralph Cox, Johnny Clayburne, Ronnie Yates, David Sexton, Wilkie Owens, Chester Long, Roland Deel and Dr. Amjad Husain. The family will receive friends at the Buchanan Funeral Service at Keen Mountain from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday with services at 7 p.m. Buchanan Funeral Service at Keen Mountain is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Elizabeth (Lizzy) Mullins Crockett
PILGRIM KNOB, Va. -- Mrs. Elizabeth (Lizzy) Mullins Crockett, 83, formerly of Grundy, Va., passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the home of her son, Enoch Mullins, in the Elkins Branch section of Buchanan County, following a short illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Milton and Sarah Vandyke. She was a member of the Grundy Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jake Mullins, and her second husband, Grat Crockett; and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by one son, Enoch Mullins and wife Mary of Pilgrim Knob; two daughters: Mrs. Juanita Elswick and husband David of Grundy, and Mrs. Geraldine Woods and husband Lloyd of Vansant, Va.; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain, Va., with Rev. Mike Altizer and Rev. James Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in the Kelly Family Cemetery on Compton Mountain. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the Buchanan Funeral Service in Keen Mountain from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Buchanan Funeral Service in Keen Mountain is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dollie Baldwin Puckett
GLADE SPRING, Va. -- Mrs. Dollie Baldwin Puckett, 84, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Buchanan County and had lived in Glade Spring for the past 21 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Puckett. She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Fox of Rosedale, Va.; six sons, Larry Puckett of Stafford, Va., Jerry P. Puckett and Tommy Puckett, both of King George, Va., Freddie Puckett of Lancaster, Pa., Sammy J. Puckett of Kodak, Tenn., and Danny Puckett of Fredericksburg, Va.; a brother, Wilson Baldwin of Lakeland, Fla.; a sister, Lois Owens of Lakeland; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Massey Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Baptist Cemetery in Glade Spring. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Farris Funeral Service is serving the family of Mrs. Puckett.

Ray Deel
HAYSI, Va. -- Ray Deel, 63, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital at Grundy, Va. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Parrot and Icey Deel. He was a miner and member of UMWA Local 7170 and was former owner of Golden Chip Coal Company. He was of the Old Regular Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife, Omalene Deel; son, Arnie Deel of Haysi; sisters, Dorothy Newsome and Evelyn Deel, both of Haysi; brothers, Tom Deel and Auty Deel, both of Haysi, and Charlie Deel of Grundy; and a granddaughter, Pebbles Steele of Grundy. The funeral service will be Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Russell Prater Church on Greenbrier with Elders Eddie Newsome and Danny Yates officiating. Burial will follow in Parrot Deel Cemetery at Route 2, Haysi. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The body will be taken to the church Tuesday, where friends may call after 5 p.m. A service will be held at 7 p.m. with Elders Jerry Newsome and David O'Quinn. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Joe Matney
CEDAR BLUFF, Va. -- Funeral services for Mr. Joe Matney will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Clarence Stiltner, Mack Rife and Dewey Mooney officiating. Burial will follow in White Family Cemetery at Belfast, Va. Pallbearers will be nephews and friends. Casey-Short VFW Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 DAV will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Matney, 51, of the Wardell section, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at his home following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Jessie Jeff and Nora Bailey Matney. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietname War where he received the Purple Heart Medal. He was a disabled coal miner and construction worker and was a member of Belfast Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Mack Matney and Jack Matney; and three sisters: Mrs. Sue Helton, Mrs. Betty Ray and Miss Thelma Matney. He is survived by one son, William C. Matney and wife Kasie of Cedar Bluff, Va.; one daughter, Tammy D. Matney of Cedar Bluff; four grandchildren, Chase Robinson, Katlin Robinson, Morgan J. Matney and William T. Matney; five brothers, Roger Matney of Sterling, Va., James Matney of Arcola, Va., Bobby Matney of North Tazewell, Va., and Keith Matney and Tim Matney, both of Cedar Bluff; four sisters, Mrs. Jeff (Brenda) Justus of Cedar Bluff, Mrs. Jeanette Jackson of Cedar Bluff, Mrs. Geneva Billiter of Cedar Bluff and Mrs. Don (Mildred) Addison of Arcola. Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff is in charge of arrangements.

Jamie Frank Justus
GRUNDY, Va. -- Jamie Frank Justus, 65, of the Roseann area of Route No. 1, passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Buchanan General Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Boyd Justus and Mary Ramsey Justus Lieby of Dover, Del. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Presbyterian church. He attended Hurley High School and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1962 assigned to the 4751st Air Defense Squadron Missile ADC, receiving several medals, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. At the time of his separation, he was stationed with the Tachikawa Air Base, Honshu, Japan. He was a member of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion. He was a former employee of Pet Milk Company and was chief mechanic for Twinstar Mining Company. Mr. Justus is survived by his wife of 43 years: Judith Fay Howell Justus, Route No. 1, Grundy; three daughters: Virginia Lee Justus Popowicz and husband, Bill Popowicz, Goldsboro, N.C., Teresa Ann Justus and friend, Keith Larsen, Baltimore, Md., and Barbara Sue Justus Carr and husband, Eddie Carr, Las Vegas,. Nev.; two sons: Jamie Frank Justus Jr. and wife, Patsy Justus, Hurley, Va., and Curtis Boyd Justus and wife, Jerri Justus, Roseann, Va.; two brothers: Carter Justus, Cincinnati, Ohio, and George Justus, Dover, Del. He is also survived by three grandsons; eight granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister: Myrtle Justus Pleasco; and one brother: Monroe Irvin Justus. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Clark Memorial Presbyterian Church, Roseann, Va., with Rev. Joel Thornton and Evangelist Mike Rife officiating with burial to follow in the Justus Family Cemetery on Peeled Poplar at Roseann, Va. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion. Active pallbearers will be: Terry Wolford, Willie Stacy, Steve Wolford, Donald Stacy, Hassell Bailey, Tim Prater, L.C. Justus and Ronald Conrad. Honorary pallbearers will be: co-workers of Twinstar Mining Company. There will be services at the church Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.

Marcus Deel
GRUNDY, Va. -- Funeral services for Marcus Deel will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with Pastor Jim Gilmore officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va. Active pallbearers will be Ronald Deel, Travis Locklear, Marcus Locklear, Brian Owens, Chris Owens, Aaron Perkins, Bret Perkins and Leon Rasnick. The body will remain at the funeral home where friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday evening with services at 7 p.m. Mr. Deel, 77, of the Looney's Creek section, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in Edgemont Center Nursing Home, Wytheville, Va., following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, April 18, 1923, the son of the late Leonard Deel and Viannia Mullins Deel, he was of the Old Regular Baptist faith, a retired coal miner and an avid outdoorsman. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vernia Conn Deel; two sons; two sisters; and three brothers. He is survived by his loving wife, June Patrick Deel of Grundy; six daughters: Janice Deel of Haysi, Pauline Locklear of Ridgeway, Va., Maxine Owens and Mavis Rasnick, both of Wytheville, Patsy Perkins and Rose Marie Mullins, both of Rural Retreat, Va.; three stepdaughters: Linda Lou Wicker, Judy Kay Fletcher and Louise Bailey, all of Sayersville, Ky.; three sons: Lonnie Deel of Vansant, Va., Ralph Conn Deel of Gloucester City, N.J., and Russell Sharrock Deel of Ohio; one stepson, Willie Clay Bayes of Sayersville; two sisters, Mary Kennedy of Grundy and Ruby Deel of Michigan. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. The family of Marcus Deel is being served by Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy.
