Hogston

Margaret Estep Hogston, age 74, of Saltville, died Monday, July 14, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She was a member of First Church of God, Allison Gap, and the widow of Ingy M. Hogston.

Survivors include one son, Rodney Hogston, Powhatan; one daughter, Jo Ann Hogston Teague, Powhatan; one sister, Stella Pennington, Saltville; seven grandchildren: Andrea Hogston Jamison and Matthew Hogston, Bristol, Adam Joshua Hogston, Heather Hogston, Joy Teague, all of Powhatan, and John Teague, Goochland; several nieces and nephews; her best friend, Mike Estep.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 16, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Mumpower officiating. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery, Glade Spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saltville Rescue Squad.

McClure

Alberta Mae McClure, age 64, died Friday, July 11, 1997 at her home in Marion.

She is survived by one son, Allen McClure of Marion; one daughter, Patricia Russell of Atkins; four brothers, Rex Dunford, Marathon, Fla., Randy Dunford of Cumming, Ga., Sherman Dunford and Richard Dunford, both of Marion; four grandchildren, Jamie Phipps, Brian Lowe, Nikkie Neal, all of Chilhowie, and Donnie Dunford of Marion; one special nephew, Roger Dunford.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 14, at 10 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial followed in the Pugh Cemetery in Teas.

Miller

Lena Joy Miller, age 67, of Chilhowie, died Friday, July 11, 1997 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She attended Midway Memorial Chapel and was co-owner of Miller's Place in Chilhowie.

She is survived by her husband, Franklin B. Miller Sr., Chilhowie; one daughter, Joyce M. Davidson, Chilhowie; one son, Franklin B. Miller Jr., Chilhowie; five sisters: Shirley Johnson, Marion, Mildred Petrie, Augusta, Ga., Phyllis Lee and Glenna Yellenik, both of Butler, Penn., and Bonnie Kelley, Newark, Calif.; four brothers, Dennis Barr and Karl Barr, both of Marion, Roger Barr, Chilhowie, and Grady Barr, San Bernardino, Calif.; three grandsons, Stephen Davidson, David Davidson, and Joseph P. Miller. one daughter-in-law, Sarah Miller, Chilhowie.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 14, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Briggs officiating. Burial followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Neff

Greek Cassell (Dick) Neff Jr., age 72, of Bronxville, N.Y., formerly of Rural Retreat, died Friday, July 11, 1997 in the Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, N.Y.

He was born in Rural Retreat, the son of the late Greek C. and Lillian Cassell Neff. He was owner and horseman with the Twin Lakes Farm from 1975 to 1997. A member of the Professional and American Horsemen Association, Mr. Neff was director of the riding program at Radford College. He was known for his direction of the Radford Redcoats and Equestrian Drill Team that performed throughout the southern states. Also, he was a graduate of Rural Retreat High School, Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, World War II. He was past chairman of the Rural Retreat Fair Association, the Lions Club of Virginia and a member of the Methodist church.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Withers Neff of the home; one son, Greek C. Neff III of Belspring; one daughter, Rebecca Neff of Ventura, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Williams of Saltville and Pat Furr of Chesterfield; five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, July 16, at 11 a.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat with interment in the church cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Rural Retreat American Legion Post #229.

Pickle

Charles Andrew Pickle, age 53, died Monday, July 14, 1997 at his home in Mt. Airy, N.C.

Mr. Pickle was born in Smyth County on Feb. 9, 1944, to Henry Davis and Virginia Kimberling Pickle. He worked in maintenance electronics for AMP Inc., and was of the Mormon faith.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda Shermer Pickle of the home; five sons: Reuben Pickle and Lyle Pickle, both of Southport, N.C., Toby Pickle and Spencer Pickle, both of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Christopher Pickle, California; one stepdaughter, Debbie Wilson, Winston-Salem, N.C.; one stepson, Mark Hastings, Winston-Salem, N.C.; three step-grandchildren; two sisters, Lana Pickle Hamm and Mary Pickle Stowers, both of Groseclose.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 17, at 11 a.m. at the Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church in Pilot Mountain, N.C., by Bishop Frank Boles. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose at 2 p.m. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 9 and at other times at the Pickle home, 609 Hollingworth Road, Mount Airy, N.C.

Sullins

Gale D. Sullins, age 63, died Saturday, July 12, 1997 in Woodbridge.

Mr. Sullins was a native of Washington County, and a retired retail merchant having owned and operated clothing stores throughout the area. He was a licensed auctioneer and was a former insurance adjuster with the Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Company. He was also a former employee of the United States Government, Department of Justice, having served as an assistant Deputy Marshal with the United States Marshal's Service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard D. and Ida James Sullins and one sister, Marcelle S. Harless.

He is survived by two daughters, Tashia S. Caughran of Athens, Ga., and Lindsay Sullins of Abingdon; two sons, Nolan P. Sullins of Woodbridge, and Ashley Sullins of Abingdon; three sisters, Bonnie C. Ford, Jean S. Campbell and Joyce Sullins, all of Abingdon; three brothers, Dr. Howard O. Sullins of Chester, Thurman D. (Jack) Sullins of Woodbridge, and Ernie Sullins of Marion.

Graveside services were held Monday, July 14, at noon in Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Talbert

David A. Talbert, age 90, of Saltville, died Saturday, July 12, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

He was a member of McCready United Methodist Church and a retired employee of Olin Corporation.

Survivors include four daughters, Virginia Neese, Frances Bordwine and JoAnn Taylor, all of Saltville, and Mable Davidson, Crockett; three sons, Clarence Talbert and Robert Dean Talbert, both of Saltville, and Jack C. Talbert, Richmond; one brother, William Glenn Talbert, Saltville; one sister, Lucy Pauley, Saltville; 26 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; two special friends, Christine Puckett and Sally Rhea.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, in Mount Rose Cemetery Mausoleum with the Rev. Kyle French officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saltville Rescue Squad or the Saltville Fire Department.

Wyatt

Houston E. Wyatt, age 63, of Saltville, died Friday, July 11, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a farmer and lifelong resident of Smyth County.

Survivors include his wife, Donnell Wyatt, Saltville; one stepdaughter, Charline Eastridge; two brothers, Oscar Wyatt Jr., Seven Mile Ford, and Clifton Wyatt, Saltville; three sisters, Geraldine Collins, Saltville, Shirley Guinn, New Market, Tenn., and Marie Blevins, Marion; two step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 14, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Robbins and the Rev. Charles Blevins officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

Caldwell

Imogene D. Caldwell, 69, of Sevierville, Tenn., formerly of Bluefield, W.Va., died Thursday, July 17, 1997 at Ft. Sanders-Sevier Medical Center in Sevierville. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sevierville where she was active in the Joy Rugh Circle of United Methodist Women and a frequent teacher in the Wesleyan Sunday School class. She was a retired school teacher from Belfry High School in Belfry, Ky., and was employed by the Christmas Place in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Sharon Caldwell, and daughter Karen Vance.

Survivors include her husband, Roy E. Caldwell; one daughter and son-in-law, Karla Starkey and husband Rick; grandchildren, Joshua Maples, Sonya and Tylor Starkey, Shawn and Shannon Vance; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Russell and Pat Dix, and Bob and Ann Dix, all of Marion.

Funeral services will be held today, July 19, at 10 a.m. in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville with the Rev. Jim Bailes and the Rev. Harold Zart officiating. Interment will follow in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the capital campaign fund of First United Methodist Church in Sevierville, Tenn.
