Jones
James Howard Jones, age 70, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997 in the Ridgefield Retirement Center in Seven Mile Ford.
Mr.
Jones was a native of West Virginia and had lived most of his life in the Smyth County area. He was employed with the Brunswick Defense Corporation and also worked on the construction of the bridges for Interstate 81 in the Smyth County area.
Mr.
Jones was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force having served in World War II. He was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include four sisters: Mary Hazel Sexton and Ruby M. Testerman, both of Marion, Carol Edwards, Lanham, Md., and Lucia Raible, Palm Bay, Calif.; one brother, William E. Jones, Seven Mile Ford; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 13, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the Attoway Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Naff
Walter L. "Pete" Naff, age 86, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997 in the Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Navy. He was retired from Harwood Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Lou Heldreth Naff.
He is survived by four daughters: Shirley N. Snider of Marion, Betty N. Cress of Charlottesville, Joan N. Norris of Winchester, and Rebecca N. Branson of Wytheville; one son, J.W. (Bill) Naff, Marion; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, July 12, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-
Brown Chapel with the Rev. Harry Tindell and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marion Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 784, Marion, VA 24354.

Cornett
Mary Parsons Cornett, age 54, died Monday, July 14, 1997 at her home in Rural Retreat. She was the widow of David B. Cornett.
She was born Nov. 14, 1942 at Volney, to Dave Parsons and Carrie Tomlinson Parsons.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and Mike Romans, North Wilkesboro, N.C., Rita and Teddy DeBord, Sugar Grove, and Tina Cornett and daughter Karri of the home; her mother, Carrie Parsons, Independence; two sisters, Patsy Fleshman and Sue Parsons, both of Roanoke; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence and Joyce Parsons, Philip and Bobbie Parsons, all of Bassett, Earl and Joyce Parsons, Austinville, and French and Sally Parsons, Independence; seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 17, at 11 a.m. in the Calvary Baptist Church in Marion with the Rev. Marion Boggs and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will be in Baptist Union Cemetery in Flatridge. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes preceding the service to lie in state. The family will receive friends tonight, July 16, from 7 to 9 at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of America, Wytheville or to the Calvary Baptist Church in Marion.

Corvin
Wayne Eugene "Gene" Corvin, age 54, died Sunday, July 6, 1997 at his home in Wytheville. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Highways.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Sherri Corvin of Independence; one daughter and son-in-law, Tracie L. and Matt Byrd of Chilhowie; one sister, Dorothy Hoback of Wytheville; one brother, Randolph Corvin of Wytheville; two granddaughters, Alicia L.
Jones and Crystal Corvin.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 9, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Galilee Christian Church Cemetery.

Fore
Tommy Oliver Fore, age 43, died Thursday, July 10, 1997 in the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. He was an employee of the Washington County Solid Waste Transfer Station.
Survivors include one son, Matthew Seth Fore, Watts, Okla.; two brothers, Frank Fore and David R. Fore, both of Glade Spring; one sister, Christine Honaker, Honaker; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday, July 13, at 2 p.m. at the Old Glade Cemetery with the Rev. Harry P. Tindell officiating.

Foster
O.S. (Sherrill) Foster, age 68, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997 at a Salem hospital.
A native of Smyth County, he graduated from Marion High School, served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve, and was a graduate of National Business College. He served in the Virginia State Police as a trooper from 1950-1965, and served as Roanoke County Sheriff for five consecutive elected terms from 1967-1987.
An active member of North Roanoke Baptist Church since 1958, he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, sang in the Singing Saints Choir, served on numerous committees and was awarded "Father of the Year for Religious Activities" in 1996.

Foster was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Mary "Jackie" Foster; three brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Ron Paige; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Cindy Foster, Jeff
Foster and Tom and LeAnne Foster, all of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Allison Paige, Scott Foster, Kelly
Foster and Logan Foster; a sister, Margaret Davidson of Marion; a beloved friend, Maxine Warren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 12, at 11 a.m. in North Roanoke Baptist Church with Dr. Darryl G. Crim officiating. Interment followed in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park with the U.S. Flag ceremony by VFW Post #1264 and the Roanoke County Sheriff's Department.

Griffey
George Kelly Griffey, age 67, of Chilhowie, died Saturday, July 12, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He attended Buckeye Holiness Pentecostal Church, Saltville.
Survivors include his wife, Rosie Griffey; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George D. "Jake" Griffey and Cecil Griffey, all of Chilhowie, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Griffey, Speedwell, Mr. and Mrs. Terry Griffey, Rock Hill, S.C., and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Griffey, Seven Mile Ford; two daughters, Mary Vanhoozer, Chilhowie, and Mrs. James (Priscilla) Fields, Saltville; four brothers, William Griffey, Archie Griffey and John Griffey, all of Saltville, and Henry Griffey, Chilhowie; two sisters, Ruth Cregger, Groseclose, and Sarah Barker, Marion; seven grandchildren: William Vanhoozer, Michael Vanhoozer, David Vanhoozer, Travis Griffey, Shana Griffey, Randy Fields, and Kayla Griffey; four step-grandchildren: Eddie Pennington, Sarah Hall, Adam Pennington and Travis Widener; five step-great-grandchildren: Megan Hall, Courtney Hall, Cody Hall, Dalton Pennington and Nathan Pennington.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 14, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wade Kestner officiating. Burial was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Hayes
Esta Rupard Hayes, age 88, of Konnarock, died Friday, July 11, 1997 in Cedar Lawn Convalescent Home, Abingdon.
She was a native of
Johnson County, Tenn., and had lived in Konnarock most of her life.
She was the widow of Cyrils T. Hayes and was a member of Konnarock Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Galen (Wanda) Walls, Konnarock; three sons, Gerald Hayes, Abingdon, Gene Hayes, and Tom Hayes, both of Damascus; two sisters, Bertha Larimer, Chilhowie, and Gladys Booth, Vienna; one brother, Eugene Rupard, King George; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 14, in Konnarock Seventh-Day Adventist Church with Pastor Ron Ihrig and the Rev. Helen Phillips officiating. Burial was in the Hayes Family Cemetery, Konnarock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Mount Rogers Rescue Squad, Whitetop, VA 24292.
