Elizabeth (Breul) Powell
4/20/1914 - 8/2/2001
Born of German-Dutch parents on April 20, 1914, in Islutschistoy, a Jewish village, in southern Russia, Elizabeth grew up and lived in the midst of the tragic political, economic, and social upheavals that swept through Europe during the first half of the 20th century. Thank God, she and some of her family, including her son, were able to escape from the Communists during the Second World War, mainly on foot and horse-drawn farm wagons, arriving in northwestern Germany just before the war’s end. Having lost everything, and Germany lying in ruins after the war, Elizabeth and her son tried to emigrate to Canada, where they had relatives, but Canada shut its doors. The situation seemed hopeless. But then in 1951, with the aid of Elizabeth’s sister, Katherine, and American Mennonites, they were allowed to enter the U.S.A. Living first in Pennsylvania and later in Lynden, Bellingham, and Puyallup, the beginnings in America were hard. Not being able to speak English didn’t help. Elizabeth worked as a cleaning lady and nurse’s aid until she was 70 years old, never taking a vacation, and never earning more than the minimum wage, but with that she managed to buy her own home and pay her bills. Despite her meager income, she was generous with her children, grandchildren, neighbors and friends. She always had one of the most attractive and best-kept places, inside and out, wherever she lived. On August 2, 2001, her brave heart and willing hands stopped. She was laid to rest beside her much-loved and dearly missed daughter-in-law, Dolores Breul. Elizabeth lived and died with gratitude to God and to the American people for letting her and her son come to this great land. She is survived by: her son, Linus Breul; grand children Sandra (Breul) Fisher, and John Breul, and their spouses, Warren and Sally; great grand children Alison F., Erika F., John F., Jake B. and Riley B.; and her sister, Katherine Teichrob. Many thanks to all all who took an interest in Elizabeth and helped her; special thanks to Katherine Teichrob, Joanne Thomas, Stan Moe, Dwight Chittim, and Joel and Gloria Davis.
