Jordan, Arlette

MIDDLETON/ DEFOREST - Arlette Jordan, age 101, died on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at Sterling House in Middleton. Arlette was born to Edwin and Anna (Hagenstad) Daley in DeForest on Feb. 26, 1907, and was a Madison-area resident all her life. She was a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., and was a teacher in Minnesota schools for several years. She was united in marriage on Dec. 4, 1948, to Fred Jordan. She was employed by the State of Wisconsin, Department of Transportation for many years until her retirement. She is survived by a niece, Marilyn Innman of Benson, Minn.; and great nephews and nieces, Thomas, Donald, Douglas and David Midthun, and Darlene Orrick all of the DeForest area, and Barbara Kuntz and Cynthia Binger both of Minnesota. She is also survived by several great-great nephews and nieces; great-great-great nephews and nieces, all whom she dearly loved; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred; and three sisters, Sadie Johnson of DeForest, Ruth Daley of Madison, and Esther Davis of Staples, Minn. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at THE NORWAY GROVE MEMORIAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 820 N. River Road in DeForest, with the Rev. Kathy Ulrich officiating. Entombment will be at Forest Hill cemetery in Madison. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until time of services on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church, HospiceCare Foundation or the charity of one's choice.

Metz, Larry R.

MADISON - Larry R. Metz, age 64, died at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, following a long illness. A celebration of life service will be held at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 203 Wisconsin Ave., at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008. Reed, Vivian A.

BOSCOBEL - Vivian A. Reed, age 92 of Boscobel, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at Orchard Manor in Lancaster. She was born on Sept. 22, 1915, in Boscobel. The daughter of Roy and Ethel (Culver) Clinger. She married James Reed on Oct. 14, 1938, in Dubuque Iowa. He preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 2000. She is survived by two daughters, Janis Iverson of Rewey and Jolene Millard of Linden; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Glennie Rewey of Lancaster, Maxine (Frank) Cook of Madison and Loretta Schmit of Sheboygan Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and two sisters. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 8, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the KENDALL FUNERAL HOME in Boscobel. Pastor Stan Pegram will officiate. Burial will take place in the Union Hill cemetery, Mount Zion. Frien

Schultz, Marion B.

MADISON - Marion B. Schultz, age 95, passed away peacefully at HospiceCare Inc. in Fitchburg, on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008. Marion was born on March 14, 1913, in Galena, Ill. She graduated from Galena High School in 1931, the same year she married her high school sweetheart, Gayle Schultz, who was tragically killed in an accident a few months later. Before coming to Madison in 1938, Marion operated a small tearoom in Galena. After she came to Madison, Marion assisted Dr. David L. Williams at his private practice, and later moved with him to the Jackson Clinic. She then retired from the Jackson Clinic in April 1978. Marion returned to Galena for her 50th high school reunion, where she re-met the boy that grew up next door to her, Meldon L. Wilmarth. After a brief courtship, they were married on March 22, 1980, in which they had 25-plus wonderful years together. Marion and Meldon enjoyed traveling, being together, and just life in general. She is survived by her two step-sons, Dain (Jenette) Wilmarth of Portland, Ore. and Jim (special friend, Bob) Wilmarth of Portland, Ore.; nephews, Fred (Joyce) Williams of Madison and Dr. Reginald D. (Joan) Williams of San Antonio, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, Gayle Schultz and Meldon Wilmarth; her parents, Fred and Emma Blum; sister, Leta B. Williams; and brother-in-law, Dr. David L. Williams. A visitation will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. with a brief prayer service immediately following. A burial will be held at Greenwood cemetery in Galena, Ill. at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the charity of one's choice.

Schwengel, C. Bruce

LODI - C. Bruce Schwengel, age 64, of Lodi, formerly of Madison, passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at home. He was born on Nov. 3, 1943, in Madison to Clarence and the late Marion (Krueger) Schwengel. He was a graduate of Wisconsin High School and UW-Madison. He married Judith Engler on June 25, 1966. Interests in zoology and the out-of-doors led to his career in the sporting goods industry, with many years employed by Berg-Pearson Sporting Goods and Dorn Hardware. An avid hunter, fisherman, and birdwatcher, Bruce enjoyed spending time outdoors and participated in various conservation organizations. Other favorite pastimes were gardening, reading, cooking, music concerts, and sports. Bruce is survived by his wife, Judi; daughters, Michelle (Chris) Regala of Hawai'i and Erika (Jon) Skarda and granddaughter Rowan Skarda of Lodi; father, Clarence Schwengel of Madison; and brother, Paul (Paulette) Schwengel of Egg Harbor. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marion Schwengel. A 10 a.m. visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 322 E. Washington Ave., Madison followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service.

Silberschmidt, Ruth Paula

STOUGHTON - Ruth Paula Silberschmidt, age 80, of Stoughton, died on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008. She was born on March 26, 1928, in Sparta, to Pastor Martin Zimmermann and Paula (Radloff) Zimmermann. Ruth was baptized, confirmed and married in Burr Oak Lutheran Church by her father. She was married to Robert Silberschmidt on May 28, 1949. They owned and operated Silbie's Shoes in the Village Shopping Center, LaCrosse for 33 years. Robert preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 1992. Ruth is survived by two daughters, Christine Wood of Fort Worth, Texas, and Teresa (Tom) Truppe of Janesville; a son, Kurt (Mary) Silberschmidt of Stoughton; 11 grandchildren, Rebecca Williams, Gregory Mewaldt, Rachel Mewaldt, Amanda Truppe, Daniel Truppe, Stephen Truppe, Amy Silberschmidt, Joseph Silberschmidt, Aaron Oberman, Nathan Oberman and Shauna Parkhurst; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen (Harlen) Demsien of Two Rivers; and sister-in-law, Trudy Zimmermann of Aiken, S.C. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John and Paul; and a sister-in-law, Grace. Funeral services will be held at GOOD SHEPHERD BY THE LAKE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1860 US Highway 51, Stoughton, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, with the Rev. Todd McVey presiding. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery, LaCrosse, at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL HOME, Highway 51 North at Jackson St., Stoughton, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Memorials may be made to either Good Shepherd by the Lake Lutheran Church or Skaalen Nursing Home.

Smith, Charlotte (Dugan)

LAKE GENEVA - Charlotte (Dugan) Smith, age 78, beloved wife of Dr. Thomas Eugene Smith, passed away on Monday, Aug. 4, 2008. She was born on March 8, 1930, to proud Irish parents, Walter and Margaret (Lynch) Dugan. Charlotte grew up in Madison, and graduated from Madison Central High School in 1950. She married her high school sweetheart, Tom Smith, in 1955, and was to become a loving mother of six children, grandmother of 10, and great-grandmother of four. Charlotte and Tom lived in Madison, Mount Pleasant, Mich., Antioch, Ill., and Wheeling, Ill.; while Tom worked and the children grew up. After all six children were in school, Charlotte worked as a teacher's aide for children with emotional and behavioral problems. She retired in 1987, and she and Tom built a home on 35 acres near Cazenovia. They lived there for almost 20 years, and then moved to Lake Geneva. Charlotte was very proud of her Irish heritage, and in that tradition she devoted her life to her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an older sister, Kathleen Noltner; an older brother, Donald Dugan; and daughter, Marcy Flynn. She is survived by her husband, Tom; a younger brother, Walter Dugan; and children, Judd (Deb) Smith, Brian (Nancy) Smith, Mike Smith, Kathy (Joe) Smith, and Jennifer (Nick) Ricci. She will be deeply missed by them all, for they know that she was the "glue" that strengthened the bonds of the whole Smith family. In celebration of Charlotte's life, there will be a memorial visitation from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at PIONEER ESTATES, N2020 County H, Lake Geneva.

Wells, Trent H. Jr.

BARABOO/ LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Trent H. Wells Jr., age 93, formerly of Los Angeles and Coulterville, Calif., died on Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at the Harbor House Assisted Living Center in Baraboo. He was born on Dec. 24, 1914, in Los Angeles, the son of Trent Sr. and Agnes (Miller) Wells. On Feb. 22, 1942, he married Mary Robinson at Mather Army Air Base in Sacramento County, Calif. He served as a decorated captain in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, a proud member of the 364th Fighter Group. His meritorious service included flying 55 combat missions en route to earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters. He ascended to become a commanding officer of the 146th Fighter Group squadron before retiring from active duty as a major in the U.S. Air Force in 1953. After his military service, Trent founded Mechanical Developments Co. An engineer by trade, he designed and manufactured medical instruments including a neurosurgical device that became the most widely used instrument of its kind in the world. He was among a select group of laymen bestowed with an honorary medical degree from the University of Utah. Later known as Trent H. Wells, Inc., his business also collaborated with NASA to construct a device to help study motion sickness in space. His successful business ventures provided Trent with the means to support worthy causes through his many philanthropic contributions, including charitable gifts to universities and secondary schools, among others. His many accomplishments also provided Trent and Mary the opportunity to travel the world. He was a 50-year member of the Mariposa Lodge of Freemasons and a lifetime member of Post No. 9454 of the California VFW. He was also an avid downhill skier, continuing to enjoy the sport into his 90s. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary of Baraboo; two children, Robert Wells of Merrimac, and Patricia (F. Kristian) Storm of Madison; three grandchildren, Sandra Storm of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Lori (Kevin) Noth of Bloomington, Minn., and Darlene (Leif) Lillehaugen of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a great-grandson, Cameron Noth. Trent will be interred in the Inglewood Park cemetery in Inglewood, Calif. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Masonic Homes of California, 1111 California St., San Francisco, CA 94108. Wessels, Tina

SUN PRAIRIE - The lovely and talented Tina M. Wessels, age 38, ended her three-year battle with lung and brain cancer at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at her home in Sun Prairie surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Jan. 11, 1970, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa., the daughter of Sharon Casteel. She married Jason Wessels on Oct 15, 1994, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City, Iowa. Tina was a devoted and caring mother, wife, daughter and friend that had a passion for enjoying life to the fullest. Her hobbies included decorating her home, photography, jewelry making, napping and traveling. Tina spent her last three years doing exactly what she wanted, making a wonderful home for her family and spending time with her friends. She will always be remembered for her positive outlook on life, even at the most difficult times in her battle with cancer she could find a reason to smile. Tina and Jason met in 1991 at the University of Iowa where she graduated in 1993 with a bachelor of arts degree. Professionally, Tina was a highly talented marketing manager in the engineering field working with Baird and Associates in Fitchburg until 2005. Before retiring from her professional life, she enjoyed a short stint as a sales executive with DHL shipping. She is survived by her husband; and three sons, Andrew, Harrison and Benjamin all at home; her uncle, Dave and aunt, Kim Casteel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her in-laws, Wayne and Sue Wessels of Middleton, Bill and Cassie Wessels; niece, Madeline; nephews, Greyson and Samuel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Brad and Brandy Wessels; and niece Sierra of Bena, Minn. She was preceded in death by her mother, Sharon Casteel; and her grandparents, Leonard and Bernita Casteel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 227 Columbus St. in Sun Prairie with Monsignor Duane Moellenberndt presiding. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at the TUSCHEN-NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 302 Columbus St. in Sun Prairie and from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church on Saturday. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest a donation to memorial funds that are being established.
