Sarah M. Barker
HARTLAND - Sarah M. Barker (nee Caravela) of Hartland, formerly of Oconomowoc, passed away Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at the age of 85.

Survivors include her children, Tony (Ester) Sardina of Las Vegas, Nev., Mary (John) Brucker of Wauwatosa, Marty (Ann) Barker of Oconomowoc, Marie Barker of Nashotah, Dennis Barker of New Berlin, Kathy (Rick) Knas of Osseo, Norm (Stephanie) Barker of Smyrna, Tenn., and Jake (Sherri) Barker of Eden Prairie, Minn. She is further survived by 25 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; her grandson, Jack Sardina; and her great-granddaughter, Sarah Sardina.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the Luko-Evert Funeral Home, 170 Warren Ave., Hartland. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the services. Burial will be at St. Calre cemetery in North Lake.

Alice R. Cleveland
JANESVILLE - Alice R. Cleveland, 81, of Janesville, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Mercy Hospital. She was born April 25, 1919, in Platteville, the daughter of George and Florence (Strong) Austin and has lived in Janesville most of her life.

She graduated from Janesville High School in 1936 and attended Platteville Normal School. Alice has been a member of Cargill United Methodist Church for over 52 years. She married Norman M. Cleveland in Dubuque, Iowa, on Feb. 11, 1938. He died Aug. 21, 1982.

Alice worked in the bookkeeping department at General Motors, starting at the age of 18, and retired in 1974 with over 37 years of service. She was very active after retiring. She volunteered her time at many different places: Cedar Crest Health Care Center, Milton School District with their reading programs and the Salvation Army wrapping Christmas gifts. She was also a member of the Cargill United Methodist Women and the Gathering Place in Milton where she loved to play dominos. Alice also enjoyed traveling with the Van Galder Tour groups and loved her dog, Max.

She is survived by two daughters, Ruth (Larry) Krauter of Janesville and Carolyn (J.P.) Campion of St. Francis; five grandchildren, Steven (Tammy) Krauter, Jeff (Cindy) Krauter, David (Brenda) Krauter, Kristin and Kimberly Campion and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, James (Neva) Austin of Janesville. Besides her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Frank Austin.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Cargill United Methodist Church with Rev. Kay Welsch officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Overton Funeral Home, 15 N. Jackson St., Janesville, and from 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday until the time of the service at the church.

Memorials in Alice’s name may be made to Senior Luncheons, c/o Cargill United Methodist Church.

Catherine M. Burrow
WAUKESHA - Catherine M. Burrow, 85, died peacefully on Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at her home. She was born in Waukesha on April 25, 1915, to the late James and Ethel (nee O’Brien) Price. On Sept. 17, 1938, she married the late Herman Burrow. Mrs. Burrow was a graduate of St. Joseph Grade School, attended Waukesha High School and was a charter member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Catherine will be sadly missed by her three children, Sharon (Edward) Grundman of Waukesha, Mary (Dennis) Majewski of Wales and James Burrow of Waukesha; six grandchildren, Tammy (Matthew) Last of Waukesha, Barbara (Timothy) Werner of Milwaukee, Scott Grundman and Karen (Rodney) Setum, both of Waukesha and Carrie Majewski and Cheri Majewski, both of Wales; and five great-grandchildren, Justin, Kirsten, Stephanie, Zachary and Kayla. She is further survived by her brother, Richard (Shirley) Price of Waukesha, and her sister, Joyce Stubinsky of Ixonia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, in 1968, and her infant brother, James Price.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at Randle-Dable Funeral Home, 1110 S. Grand Ave.; a parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation continues on Friday, Sept. 1, with closing prayers at the funeral home at 10 a.m. and then to St.Mary’s Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will follow at St. Joseph cemetery.

James E. Challis
BIG BEND - James E. Challis, of Big Bend, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at Woodland Health Care Center in Brookfield at the age of 79. He was born in Millwaukee on Aug. 19, 1921, the son of Arthur and Pearl (nee Wandsnider) Challis.

James was a dairy farmer and a member of First United Presbyterian Church of Vernon.

He is survived by his brother, Kenneth (Marie) Challis of Big Bend and his niece, Karen (Thomas Marcussen) Challis of Oak Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at Schmidt & Bartelt-Van Valin Funeral Home, 315 Main St., Mukwonago. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m., with the Rev. Roger Patton officiating. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at Pine Lawn Memorial Park.

Memorials to the First United Presbyterian Church of Vernon or the charity of the donor’s choice are appreciated.

Leonard A. Anderson
DENVER, Colo. - Former Waukesha resident Leonard (Lenny) A. Anderson was born to eternal life Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, in Denver, Colo., following a valiant struggle with cancer. He was 73.

Leonard was born to Mabel (nee Olson) and Avery Anderson on June 13, 1927, in Juneau County, and grew up in Wales (the Lone Acre) and Waukesha. He attended Moriah and Randall Elementary schools and Waukesha High School. He worked for Harry’s Studebaker Garage. He later owned and operated a Plymouth-DeSoto dealership on Grand Avenue in Waukesha in the 1950s. He was also district central region manager for Plymouth-DeSoto.

Leonard was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific.

He married Mary Waschow in 1944, and they had two sons, Jeffrey and Anthony. They moved to Colorado, where he owned and operated a coin (numismatic) stores. His later business interests included a restaurant and land development. He was especially known among his family and friends for his loving generosity.

Leonard is survived by his beloved sons, Jeff (Cheryl) of Denver and Tony of Fresno, Calif. He also leaves his special friend, Tammi Buckmaster. He was the loving grandfather of Marnie, Tami, Chelsea and Kristi Anderson and great-grandfather to Cole and Cameron.

He will be sadly missed by his loving sisters, Viola (the late Joseph) Paulson, Geneva (the late Hal) Frank, both of Waukesha, Avis (Jack) Bartelme of Oconomowoc, Kathleen (the late Tom) Hunt of Rochelle, Ill., Carol Stache of Minneapolis, Minn., and Donna Pasternock of Wausau; and his loving brother, Lyle Anderson of Oak Creek. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Mae (Jack) Metzelfeld, Anna (the late Truman) Rheingans, Kay (the late Bill) Waschow, Alice (the late Hank) Waschow and Clara (the late Ding) Waschow; and brother-in-law Kenneth (the late Idelle) Seth, all of Waukesha. He also leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary, on Oct. 28, 1992, and his brothers, Marvin and Keith (Eva) Anderson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Glory of God Lutheran Church in Wheat Ridge, Colo., officiated by Leonard’s nephew, Rev. Dan Paulson of North Dakota.

John J. Bartow
MUKWONAGO - John J. Bartow, a resident of Mukwonago for 4-1/2 years and formerly of Schaumburg, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital at the age of 73. John was born in Chicago, Ill., on Aug. 1, 1927, to Clyde and Elizabeth (nee Schueller) Bartow.

On May 20, 1950, John married Lea Peterman at her parents’ home in Oregon, Ill. John was a retired house painter, a member of the Masons and the Moose Lodge in Mt. Morris, Ill., and worshipped at Vernon Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lea; his children, John of Brooten, Minn., Jan (Donald) Bernhagen of Mukwonago and Joseph of Elgin, Ill.; his cherished grandchildren, Bethany and Sarah Bartow and Daniel and Ginny Bernhagen; a sister, Bettie Dwinell of Chicago; three brothers, Harry (Louise) of Delaware, Ohio, Robert (Sheral) of Glendale, Ariz., and David of Sun Prairie; other relatives, friends, and his lapdog, Pete. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Vernon Presbyterian Church, S71-W23280 National Ave. The Rev. Roger Patton and Rev. Bobby Musengwa will officiate. John’s body will be cremated.

Memorials to the church or to The American Heart Association would be appreciated.

Richard A. Manley
PEWAUKEE - Richard A. Manley, of Pewaukee, was born to eternal life Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at the age of 64.

He was the beloved husband of Joan (nee Leary) for 27 years; loving father of Lisa (Tom) Migdal of Pewaukee, Laurie (Paul) Ottman of Pewaukee and Diane Drefahl of Pewaukee; proud grandfather of Jamie and Matthew Ottman; very special uncle to Chuck (Rie) Manley of Helensville; dear brother to Raymond (Sue) Manley of Seattle, Wash., Jane (Bill) Pontel of Pewaukee and Joann (Duke) Reszczynski of Hartland; and fond brother-in-law of Evelyn Manley of Buckeye, Ariz. He is further survived by other relatives and friends.

His parents, Edward and Hazel Manley; his brothers, Charles and Louis Manley; and his sister-in-law, Janice Manley, preceded him in death.

Richard was retired from the maintenance department of the Elmbrook School System. In his spare time he loved to repair small engines and also enjoyed woodworking.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Yonke & Son Funeral Home in Pewaukee; the Rev. William McBride officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Mary Smart
OCONOMOWOC - Mary Smart, 96, formerly of Mukwonago and Eagle, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. She was born Nov. 25, 1903, in the town of Genesee. On Nov. 16, 1926, she married Clarence Smart; they worked together on their farm raising vegetables and selling them at the West Allis Farmers’ Market for 45 years.

She was a member of the Genesee Congregational Church for 74 years, a member of the Woman’s Fellowship and the School Section Homemakers for 56 years.

She is survived by a sister, Ann Guderyon of Oconomowoc, along with many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, her parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Memorial services for Mary will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the chapel at Shorehaven in Oconomowoc. Visitors may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. The Rev. Al Nickels will officiate. Cremation with burial of ashes along with her husband’s ashes will be at Genesee cemetery.

Memorials to the Genesee Congregational Church or the Genesee cemetery Association are appreciated.

Micheal J. Vick
MUKWONAGO - Micheal J. Vick, 33, of Mukwonago, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, in Marquette County, Mich., as a result of a truck accident.

Micheal was born in Waukesha on Dec. 13, 1966, to Gary and Bonnie (nee Bethmann) Vick. Micheal was a 1985 graduate of Mukwonago High School where he was All-State for football and track. After high school, he attended UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater.

On Sept. 28, 1991, he married Janet D. Totsky at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Waukesha. Micheal was an over-the-road truck driver for Gary Vick Trucking. He was an avid outdoorsman and a loving and devoted husband and father.

Survivors include his wife, Janet; his two children, Daniel and Blake; his parents, Gary and Bonnie Vick of the town of Vernon; his brother, Robert (Carri) Vick of Eagle; his grandparents, Ronald and Evelyn Vick of Mukwonago and Jane Bethmann of Mukwonago; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Shirley Totsky of the town of Vernon; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Karen (Mark) Cooper of Oconomowoc; two godchildren, Amanda Vick and Carter Cooper; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John Bethmann, and a sister-in-law, Cheryl Miller.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at the Schmidt & Bartelt-Van Valin Funeral Home, 315 Main St., Mukwonago; and also from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 300 Carroll St., Waukesha. The Rev. Jim McCammon will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Knoll cemetery in Mukwonago.

Helen A. Gonia
WAUKESHA - Helen A. Gonia (nee Opat), of Waukesha, formerly of Bay View, was born to eternal life on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at age 90.

Helen was the beloved wife of the late Peter M. Gonia. She was the loving mother of Elizabeth (Raymond) Voigt, Michael (Beth) and Richard (Karen) Gonia. She was the dearest sister of Richard (Adelle), the late Ernest (Ruth) and Joseph Opat. She was the proud grandmother of Steven Voigt, Amy (Kevin) Huckstep, Adam and Matthew Gonia. She was also the fond sister-in-law of Beatrice and Geneva Gonia. She is further survived by dear friends at East Terrace.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at First United Methodist Church, 121 Wisconsin Ave., Waukesha.

Cynthia A. Livermore
FORT ATKINSON - Cynthia A. Livermore (nee Brenning), formerly of Oconomowoc and Delafield, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital at age 42. She was born in Waukesha on Oct. 30, 1958, a daughter of Charles and Betty (nee Knutson) Brenning.

Cynthia was formerly employed at the Wilkinson Clinic in Oconomowoc and the Oconomowoc School District Office. She was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Dousman, the Huntington’s Disease Society of America and the VFW 2260 Auxiliary of Oconomowoc.

She is survived by her son, Shaun (Meggen) Livermore of Hartland; her granddaughter, Mariah; her mother, Betty (LeRoy, Sr.) Mendel of Oconomowoc; her brother, Le Roy (Lisa) Mendel Jr. of Fort Atkinson; three sisters, Debra Schmeling of Johnson Creek, Cindy (Burdus) Galbraith of Kingsland, Ga., and Sandy Ziervogel of Kingsland, Ga.; and her former husband, Arthur. She is also survived by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Brenning.

Funeral services for Cynthia will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 36821 Sunset Drive, Dousman; a VFW Auxiliary service will be followed by the Christian service. The Rev. Ralph Schultz will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the 7 p.m. service. Interment will be held at the Delafield City cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family.

Arline M. Pillsbury
WAUKESHA - Arline M. Pillsbury, born March 2, 1929, in Milwaukee, the daughter of David and Laura (nee Scholl) McMurtrie, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at age 71. She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Joan.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, Arnold, whom she married on June 21, 1951; her children, Pam (John) Detlof of Waukesha, Arnold Jr. (Patsy) of Mukwonago, Dennis (Corrine) of Sullivan and Delbert (Cindy) of Waukesha; her sisters, Marilyn Ferry of Manitowoc, Carol (Frank) Prevort of Adams-Friendship, Vivian (Bernie) Maine of Gilman and Judy Gerdman of Manitowoc; and her grandchildren, Jason, Erica, Tyler, Travis, Melissa, Brandon and Tracy. Arline will also be missed by other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Arline will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home on Moreland Boulevard. Friends may call Wednesday at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until the time of the service, and also at the funeral home Thursday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. before proceeding to Highland Memorial Park for burial.

Mervin E. Runquist
MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. - Mervin E. Runquist, 80, formerly of Eagle, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Pine Lane Healthcare in Mountain Home, where he had lived since the 1980s.

He was born Sept. 29, 1920, in Polk, Neb., to Freeman Edward and Grace B. (nee Mace) Runquist. He married Lillian K. Duckhorn in 1950 in Milwaukee. She preceded him in death.

Mervin was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. He was also a member of the First Christian Church of Mountain Home. He was a lifetime member of the Ozark VFW Post 3246 of Mountain Home, a member of the Alley-White American Legion Post 52 of Mountain Home, a member of the Lions Club and Visually Impaired, a member of the Blinded Veterans Association and a member of the Advocacy for the Handicapped. He enjoyed working on cars and in carpentry.

He is survived by three daughters, Wendy (Thomas) Mich of Vancouver, Wash., Kristin (Rick) Lange of Grayslake, Ill., and Renee (Jeffrey) Rinka of Waukesha; five grandchildren; a sister, Arlene McConkey of Greenfield; and a brother, Randall Runquist of Polk, Neb. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Loran Runquist; and one brother, Merle Runquist.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Roller Funeral Home Chapel, Mountain Home, Ark. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Fort McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell, Neb. Memorials may be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind in Boring, Ore., or to the Hospice of the Ozarks.
