VANNOY, JOANNA L.

Joanna L. Vannoy, 80, of Whited Drive, Vienna, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 1996, at her residence. She was born in Wood County, a daughter of the late German Clarence and Mary Etta Snyder Butcher. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Nursing School and a retired reconsideration examiner for the Social Security Administration. She was a former member of the United Brethren Church and attended Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, Gilmer County. She was a past president of the Calhoun Historical Society, and served as archivist for many years. She and her husband, Forrest Vannoy, contributed many books of area history and genealogy to the Calhoun County Library. Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Forrest B. Vannoy; one sister, Beauna Leitch of Orlando, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters; and three brothers. Services will be held Wednesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Rev. Keith Miles officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen South cemetery.

VANNOY, MADGE

Madge Moore Vannoy, 80, of Amber Lane, S.C., died Sunday, Sept. 22, 1996, at her residence following an illness. She was born in Normantown, a daughter of the late O.D. and Emma Hardman Moore. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Stumptown, and taught in Gilmer County school system. She was a graduate of Glenville State College. Surviving are her husband, Noble F. Vannoy of Galivants Ferry, S.C.; three daughters, Terry Johnson of Chester, S.C., Kathy McCracken of Galivants Ferry and Cindy Martin of Aynor, S.C.; one brother, Albert Moore of Glenville; three sisters, Lillie Meadows of Ripley, Flora Frame of Normantown and Murl Ferrell of Elyria, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held at Mt. Trolly Freewill Baptist Church, S.C.

VANNOY, MARTHA

Martha Stump Vannoy, 88, of Stumptown, died Saturday, April 13, 1996, at Parkview Health Care Center. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Frank and Emily Gherke Stump. She was the 1970 Calhoun County Belle, a member of Rush Run Homemaker's Extension Club and Rush Run Baptist Church, Stumptown. Surviving are two sons, Frank Vannoy of Reedy and John Vannoy of Mineral Wells; two daughters, Emma Moss of Normantown and Arena Alice Hargis of Huntington; one sister, Mary M. Stump of Glenville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Von B. Vannoy; and two sisters, Georgia McCartney and Stella Mace Hardman. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Rush Run Baptist Church, Stumptown, with Rev. Lewis Villers officiating, and burial in Sylvester Stump cemetery, Stumptown.

VANSCOY, KATHLEEN

Kathleen M. Kady VanScoy, 79, of Pennsboro, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 1996, at her residence. She was born near Pennsboro, a daughter of the late James Wesley and Iva A. Denning Whaley. She was retired from W.Va. Dept. of Human Services after 14 years as a social worker in Calhoun, Ritchie, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall and Hancock counties. She was a member of Rt. 1 Homemakers Club and Pennsboro Church of Christ. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Shelby M. VanScoy; two daughters, Kay Linville of Pennsboro and Vickie Robinson of Ravenswood; two sisters, Helen Meredith of Weirton and Mildred McDonnell of Southside, Ala.; six grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, James W. Whaley, Jr. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Church of Christ, Pennsboro, with Evangelist John Tenney and Evangelist Terry Jones officiating, and burial in Church of Christ cemetery.

VINEYARD, MATTIE

Mattie Starcher Carper Vineyard, 84, of Arnoldsburg, died Saturday, Mar. 30, 1996, at Miletree Healthcare Center, Spencer. She was born in Arnoldsburg, a daughter of the late James Yancy and Myrtle Westfall Starcher. She was a graduate of Calhoun County High School and Glenville State College and earned a master's degree from West Virginia University. She was a curriculum supervisor for Calhoun County schools and a retired teacher with 37 years of service in Clay, Roane and Calhoun counties. She was a member of National Education Association and Calhoun County Education Association, and was a former member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma society. She was active in Community Action, Arnoldsburg, and a member of Knotts Baptist Church, Arnolds- burg. Surviving are her husband, Hoy M. Vineyard; two sons, Randal Kent Carper of Ashland, Ken., and Tommy Vernon Carper of Big Bend; one sister, Fae Cox of Millstone; one brother, Eugene Starcher of Frostproof, Fla.; one foster brother, Charles Knotts of Bickmore; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Vernon Q. Carper, and one brother, Seldon Starcher. Services were held at Sinnett-Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Ray N. Harris officiating. Burial was in Spencer Memorial cemetery.

WALKER, HAROLD E.

Harold E. Walker, 61, of Weirton, died Thursday, May 9, 1996, at his residence. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of Olga Walker Ferrell of Big Bend and the late Carl Walker, and stepson of the late Russell Ferrell. He was retired from Weirton Steel Mill. Surviving are his wife, Jean Walker; two sons, Vernon Walker of Big Bend and Mike Walker of Pleasant Hill; one stepdaughter, Janet Casto of Weirton; three brothers, Irvin Walker of Big Bend, Ronnie Walker of Munday and Jack Walker of Big Bend; one sister, Janice Kelly of Belmont; two half-sisters, Norma Queen of St. Marys and Naomi Kellar of Big Bend; one stepsister Isabelle Parsons of Georgia; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Edward Walker; one sister, Betty Holbert; and one stepbrother, Harold Ferrell. Services were held at Turley Funeral Home, New Cumberland, with Rev. Charles E. Andrews officiating.

WATKINS, ANGELA JO

Angela Jo 'A.J.' Watkins, 28, of Chloe, died Tuesday, July 30, 1996, at her residence. She was born in Summit County, Ohio, a daughter of Daris and Mary Long Watkins of Chloe. She was a licensed practical nurse at Braxton Health Care Center, Flatwoods. Surviving in addition to her parents are two sisters, Michelle Mollohan of Duck, and Sharon Watkins of Chloe; one brother, Daniel Watkins of Chloe; paternal grandmother, Mary Magdeline Watkins of Beckley; and maternal grandparents, Buford and Mable Long of Duck. Joint services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Minnora cemetery.

WAYNE, ORVIE

Orvie Wayne, 81, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 1996, in Roane General Hospital. A homemaker, she was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late George and Bertha May Falls. She was a former lay minister for United Methodist Church and attended Church of the Living God, Spencer. Surviving are two daughters, Mazel Burroughs of Spencer and Anna Boggess of Liverpool; five sons, Lloyd H. Wayne of Minnora, Nolan Wayne of Chloe, Frank Wayne of Shinnston, Larry Wayne of Orrville, Ohio, and Jerry Wayne of Parkersburg; three sisters, Rosie Hicks of Arnoldsburg, Lillie Butler of Minnora and Millie Bishop of Millstone; three brothers, Herman Falls of Glenville, John Falls of Grantsville and Arnold R. Falls of Arnoldsburg; 25 grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Wayne, and one daughter, Macel Cabell. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Austin White and Rev. Olive Swiney officiating. Burial was in Bailey cemetery, Minnora.

ANDERSON, DANIEL

Daniel L. Anderson, 90, of Summersville, formerly of Five Forks, died Sunday, June 6, 1999, at Summersville Memorial Hospital. He was born in Reedy, the son of the late Robert Lee and Clara Amanda Burrows Anderson. He was a member of Five Forks Community Church. He was a farmer, worked in oil fields, and was a former cemetery attendant for Stump Funeral Homes. Surviving are his wife, Irene Wilson Anderson of Parkview Nursing Home, and one son, Jeffrey A. Anderson of Five Forks. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters, Flossie Newhart, Sudie Harris and Blondena A. Morrison. Services will be held Thursday, 10:30 a.m., in conjunction with his sister, Blondena A. Morrison, at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Visitation was scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday.

ARNOLD, NEAL R.

Neal R. Arnold, 66, of Chloe, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at his residence. He was the son of the late Charlie W. and Blanche Groggs Arnold. He was a member of Hallsburg Church, Servia. Surviving are his wife, Bernice L. King Arnold of Chloe; two brothers, Verner Arnold of Chloe and Fenton Arnold of Arnolds-burg; two sisters, Dorothy Ellington of Rittman, Ohio, and Esta Smith of Mogadore, Ohio. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Basil Arnold, Dallas Arnold and Glen Arnold, and one sister, Belvia Sears. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Arnold cemetery on Walker Road.

ARTHUR, MARY ELLEN

Mary Ellen Arthur, 66, of Ft. Worth, Tex., died Thursday, June 24, 1999. She was born in Big Bend, the daughter of the late Ralph C. and Madeliene Wolverton Ferrell. She was a former resident of Barberton, Ohio, and was a member of Reimer Road Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Chester A. Arthur; one son, Larry Arthur of Akron; four sisters, Betty Fern of Barberton, Helen V. Miller of Bowling Green, Ohio, Joanne Schreiber of Polk City, Fla., and Susan Jones of Clermont, Fla.; one brother, Jack Ferrell of Barberton; one aunt, Mary Wolverton of Big Bend; and two cousins, Cecil D. Wolverton of Leachtown and Harold R. Wolverton of Big Bend. Burial was in Rose Hill, Akron, Ohio.

ATWELL, MILLIE

Millie I. Atwell, 84, of Washington, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Oka, the daughter of the late Andrew and Letha Jarvis Cottrell. She was a homemaker and a life member of Oka Church. She was a life member and past president of Amvets Auxiliary. Surviving are one daughter, Lucille Cobb of Washington; one son, Adra Lynn Jarvis of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Frank Plybon officiating. Burial was in Clover cemetery.
