Wynona R. Rogers

Wynona Sparks Rogers, of Marlinton, died at her home on Wednesday, August 25, 1999.

No arrangements have been made at press time.

Michael A. Filuta

Michael A. Filuta, age 72, of Mentor, Ohio, died Tuesday, August 17, 1999, at Cleveland Clinic Hospital.

He was born April 1, 1927, in Durbin, son of the late Anton and Frances Filuta.

Mr. Filuta was employed by Diamond Shamrock for 40 years, retiring in 1992, and had lived in Painesville, Ohio, from 1940 until 1979, and returned to Mentor in 1994. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church-Concord Twp., K of C #947 Painesville, and VFW Post #7754 Fairport Harbor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Filuta, and a sister, Nettie Maki.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann Mulqueeny Filuta, of Mentor; one son, William Filuta, of Strongsville; and one daughter, Catherine Pulford, of Silver Spring, Maryland; two brothers, Nick Filuta, of Zanesville, Ohio, and George Filuta, of Augusta, Georgia; three sisters, Ann Filuta, of Painesville, Mary Hook, of Aurora, Colorado, and Helen Nestor, of Akron, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Mass with Christian burial was held Friday, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Concord Twp., with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Painesville.

Carol Ann Smith

Carol Ann Smith, age 67, of Cross Lanes, died August 21, 1999, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church at Nitro, was a graduate of West Virginia State College, and a secretary for several Cross Lanes businesses and organizations.

Surviving her are her husband, Carl E. Smith; sons, the Rev. Edward Smith, of Ohio, and Brian Smith, of Scott Depot; two sisters, Marjorie Anderson, of Marlinton, and Orpha Haselwood, of Hinton; four brothers, Lowell Lilly, of Washington , D. C., Lyell Lilly , of West Palm Beach, Florida, Philip Lilly, of Hinton, and Jim Lilly, of Jacksonville, Florida; and ten grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Nitro, by the Rev. John Rollins, Jr. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church Christian Education Fund, 424 Cross Lanes Drive, Nitro, WV 25143.

Eva Gertrude Woods

Eva Gertrude Woods, age 81, of Sweet Springs, died August 21, 1999, in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a long illness.

She was a member of Sweet Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving her are two daughters, Linda Bowers, of Sweet Springs, and Thelma Jean Watson, of White Sulphur Springs; a grandson, Larry Woods, and a nephew, Thomas Woods, of Buena Vista, Virginia, whom she raised; sisters, Lucy Clark, of Buena Vista, and Zada Wright, of Marlinton; and brother, Ed Woods, of Omaha, Nebraska.

Services were held Wednesday at Sweet Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. John Kelly and the Rev. Everette Defibaugh, with burial at Mountain View Cemetery in Sweet Springs.

Ulreca Gum Shultz

Ulreca Gum Shultz, age 68, of Goshen, Virginia, formerly of Mill Gap, Virginia, died August 7, 1999, at Augusta Medical Center.

She was born August 1, 1931, at Mill Gap, a daughter of John Ashby and Mary Margaret Gum Shultz.

Preceding her in death were a sister, Cappit Shultz, and a brother, Everett “Shorty” Shultz. She is survived by a sister, Mary S. Graham, of Goshen, and a brother, Albert Shultz, of Monterey, Virginia.

Miss Shultz taught several years ago in Marlinton Elementary School and in Virginia schools, and later was a teacher for the U. S. Air Force in Alaska and Florida and in international schools overseas. She was a graduate of James Madison University and a member of the Beulah Presbyterian Church.

Services were held at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell Tuesday, August 10, by the Rev. James W. Moore. Burial was in Hightown United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Highland Elementary School Remedial Reading fund, Monterey, VA 24465; Highland Elementary School Library, Monterey, VA 24465, or the Beulah Presbyterian Church, c/o Mary Carolyn Hooke, HC1, Box 278, Monterey, VA 24465.

William Burr Thomas

William Burr Thomas, age 72, of Cass, died Saturday, August 21, 1999, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.

He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in Germany. He was a retired mechanical engineer for the J. S. Young Company in Baltimore, Maryland, and had also worked at the Cass Sawmill. He was of the Methodist faith.

He was born in Cass December 22, 1926, the son of the late Harry and Mabel Galford Thomas.

Preceding him in death were his sister, Lorene Workman, and two brothers, Raymond and Hubert Thomas.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Baker Thomas; two daughters, Sharon Turner, of Stony Bottom, and Diana Lynch, of Martinsburg; four sons, William B. Thomas, Jr., Steve Thomas, Doug Thomas, and Bradley Thomas, all of Baltimore, Maryland; thirteen grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Chapel in Arbovale. Burial will be in the Arbovale Cemetery.

Ramona W. Sharp

Ramona Wooddell Sharp, age 66, of Chesterfield, Virginia, died Sunday, August 22, 1999.

Mrs. Sharp was a native of Pocahontas County, the daughter of the late George Dewey and Claudine Wooddell.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Todd Sharp.

Surviving are her husband, Styrl W. Sharp, Jr.; daughters, Sandra Robin and Karen Jamison, both of Richmond, Virginia; sisters, Claudia Malcomb, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, and Hattie Johnson, of Indio, California; and three grand-daughters.

Funeral services were held in the Beulah United Methodist Church Wednesday, with interment at the Dale Memorial Park.

Hazel H. Jordan

Hazel H. Jordan, age 79, of Baltimore, Maryland, died August 19, 1999, at GVMC Medical Center, Baltimore, Maryland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Samuel Jordan, II, (the son of the late Robert Samuel Jordan, I, and Flora Moore Jordan, of Marlinton).

Mrs. Jordan is survived by a son, Robert Samuel Jordan, III, of Baltimore; two daughters, Dianne and Nancy Speigel; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at Baltimore Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.

Opal Sharp Dunford

Word was received of the death of Opal Sharp Dunford, of Pearisburg, Virginia, formerly of Frost, on Monday, August 23, 1999. Her brother is Craig Sharp, of Frost.

Ralph W. Messick

Ralph Willson Messick, age 86, of Midland, Virginia, died April 4, 1999, at Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton, Virginia.

A native of Virginia, Mr. Messick was a chemist for the Rayon Plant in Covington, Virginia, and later in Leesburg, Virginia. He was a member of the Midland Church of the Brethren.

Mr. Messick was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Rachel Jordan Messick, (a daughter of the late Robert S. and Flora Moore Jordan, of Marlinton). He was also preceded in death by his father, Edgar W. Messick, mother, Myrtle Virginia Messick, and a sister, Pearlline Mickline.

He is survived by his son, Carl R. Messick, of Herndon, Virginia, four sisters and two brothers.

Graveside services were held at Midland Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

William Arthur Ervin

William Arthur Ervin, age 76, of Green Bank, died August 24, 1999, in Baltimore, Maryland, at the Franklin Woods Rehab Center, after an extended illness.

Friends may call at the Wallace and Wallace Chapel at Arbovale from 7 to 9 p. m., Friday.

Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Saturday at the Green Bank Hebron Baptist Church by the Rev. John Sulllivan. Burial will be in the Arbovale Cemetery.
