Eloise Lovejoy

Eloise “Jeannie” Lovejoy of Bancroft died on August 25, 2004.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thelma and Houston “Pete” Hicks, and brother, Bill.

Surviving: husband, Bobby; sons, David Harris and wife, Vickie, of Poca, Michael Lovejoy and wife, Julie, of Milton, Brian Lovejoy and wife Kim, of Charleston; grandchildren, Davy, Chad, Todd, Tabitha, Matthew, Caitlin, American Thomas, Kennedy Marie, and Karsyn.

A memorial service and “Celebration of Life” will be held at Bancroft Church of God Mission on Saturday, August 28, 2004. Her body has been donated to the Human Gift Registry of WVU. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Mark L. Webb

Mark L. Webb, 45, of Hurricane died August 27, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.

He was born August 1, 1959 in Charleston, sa son of Shirley May Jones Webb and the late Charles Herbert Webb. He was a general contractor, lifelong resident of the Kanawha Valley, and a member of Nitro Moose Lodge No. 565.

Surviving in addition to his mother: wife, Lisa Dirickson Webb; sons, John Frye of Mount Olive, Mark “Chris” Webb of Dunbar, and Stone Lee Webb at home; brothers, Charles, Mike and Scott Webb, all of St. Albans, Herman Spencer of Wauchula, Florida, and Brady Spencer of Wahiawea, Hawaii; granddaughrer, Janie Marie Frye of South Charleston.

Service was held Tuesday, August 31, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Rob Laukoter and the Rev. Doyle Young officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

The family suggests donations to the Stone Lee Webb Fund, Putnam County Bank, PO Box 308, Hurricane WV 25526.

Amelia “Amy” Eaton Adkins

Amelia “Amy” Eaton Adkins, 89 of Lynchburg, VA formerly of Huntington, WV died on Tuesday, August 17, 2004. Services were held on Friday at Ridgelawn Abbey of Devotion with Rev. Keith Leap officiating. Burial followed. She was born January 3, 1915 in Jerome, OH a daughter of the late George D. and Hattie Tyler Eaton. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, A. Hobart Adkins, a daughter, A. Gaynelle Adkins Cremeans Vick Farley, and three brothers, George D. Eaton, Jr., Paul T. Eaton and Dow Irving Eaton. She was a member of the Highlawn United Methodist Church, the DAR Buford Chapter, and was a former member of the Eastern Star, Guyandotte. Amelia was a noted genealogist and was very active in area societies. She was the benefactor of the Amelia Eaton Adkins genealogy currently housed at the Buffalo Middle School. She was formerly active and held several positions with the Tri-State Council of Girl Scouts. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth “Dibbie” Adkins of Lynchburg, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald B. and Jeanette Adkins of Tacoma, WA; four grandchildren, Darrett B. Adkins, Jason Edwin Adkins, David J. Farley and Talitha Gawkoski; eight great grandchildren and a sister, Ruthella Eaton Jones of Crewe, VA. Online register book at www.beardfuneralhome.com.

Ruth Ann Varney Spangler

Ruth Ann Varney Spangler, 63, was escorted by the angels to her heavenly home on Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Zachary Bills. Burial in Spring Valley Memory Gardens. She was born Jan. 4, 1941, in Burr, Ky, a daughter of the late Tony and Anna Mae Lowe Varney. Ruth was a 1959 graduate of Gilbert High School. She went on to receive her BA, MA, superintendent and principal certificates from Marshall University. Ruth Ann was a member of the WVEA and the NEA. Ruth retired from teaching her 34 dedicated years of service with the Wayne County Board of Education. Ruth was a very active civic-minded person who was active in many service organizations. She joined the Order of the Eastern Star, Kermit Chapter #123, in 1963. Ruth served as a Past Matron for Kermit Chapter #123 and Barboursville Chapter #95. She served Barboursville Chapter #95 as 2003 Grand Organist for the State of West Virginia Order of the Eastern Star and 2004 Ambassador of Goodwill. She was a Past Noble Grand of the Kermit Chapter of Rebekah's and later joined the Huntington Charity Rebekah's #39 where she also was a Past Noble Grand. Ruth belonged to the White Shrine of Jerusalem Mizpah Chapter, Williamson, W.Va., the White Snow Council of Pocahontas and also was a Kentucky Colonel. Ruth Ann cherished each and every moment of life and all of the people it contained.

Mrs. Spangler is survived by her husband and best friend of 15 years, William B. Spangler. Others surviving include her son, Jeffrey T. (Bilinda) Dawson of King, N.C.; two stepsons, Tim (Michelle) Spangler of Wytheville, Va., and Terry (Jennifer) Spangler of Phenix City, Ala., one step-daughter, Angela Spangler of Wytheville, Va; three grandchildren, Zackerie, Brandin and Shawn Dawson of King, N.C.; and three step-grandchildren, Amber and Austin Spangler of Wytheville, Va., and Dylan Spangler of Phenix City, Ala. Ruth is survived by six devoted siblings, Linda (Al) Scimone of Petersburg, Va., Charles (Sue) Varney of Pineville, WV, Karen (Jerry) Kirk of Gilbert, WV, Barry Varney of Waynesboro, Va., Greg Varney of Charlottesville, Va., and Keith (Pam) Varney of Lyndhurst, Va. Ruth also leaves behind many precious nieces, nephews and friends. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd Lincoln McCallister

Lloyd Lincoln McCallister, 91, of Culloden, W.Va., passed away in St. Mary's Medical Center on August 28, 2004. His wife, Helen died in October 2000. Survivors include Violet Jane Lambert (daughter) and Vernon Dale McCallister (son) of Culloden; Venesa G. Smith (daughter) of Charleston; Kelly Lynn Cooper and Cindy Fitchet (granddaughters), the children of Vicki McCallister (daughter), who died in June 2004; grandsons, Alan V. Keathley of Daniels, W.Va., Eric M. Lambert of Ona; granddaughters, Andrea Childers, Jessica McCallister and Tracy Rabic; and nine great-grandchildren. Lloyd was the oldest of 16 children born to Joseph Ward and Annie Bragg McCallister. Also surviving are brothers, James Cabell McCallister and Russell Dan McCallister of Culloden and sisters Delores Oliver and Dorothy Hall both of New Haven, W.Va. Lloyd was a member of Culloden United Baptist Church at Balls Branch, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent in the 1950's. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, W.Va. Burial in Culloden Cemetery.

Dolliver T. McComas

Doliver T. McComas, 73, of Barboursville went home to be with his Lord Saturday, August 28, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Dr. Ed Grant, the Rev. Ralph Sager, Pastor Paul Meadows and the Rev. Ed Hood. Burial in McComas Cemetery. He was born Nov. 10, 1930, in Salt Rock, a son of the late Oscar and Delia Mae Vannatter McConias. He was a retired employee of CSX Locomotive Shop, Huntington, a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army and a member of the V.F.W., D.A.V. and American Legion. He attended Steele Memorial United Methodist Church and was the church historian, a member of the Minerva Lodge, #13, A.F.&A.M., Barboursville, a charter member and past president of the General Andrew Lewis Chapter of the S.A.R. and former councilman for the City of Barboursville. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Thompson McComas; one daughter and son-in-law, Tami and Andy Garvin of Barboursville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Robert M. “Bob” McComas of Beckley, W.Va., and Thomas W. “Tom” and Susan McComas of Ona; three sisters, Mary Pratt of Salt Rock, Ruby Adkins of Columbus, Ohio, and Ruth Bailey of Athalia, Ohio; two brothers, Billie S. “Bud” McComas of Salt Rock and Clarence G. “C.G.” McComas of Huntington; and four grandchildren, Erica L., Erin Marie and Jenna Rae McComas and Matthew Garvin.

Carol Ann Harshbarger

Carol Ann Harshbarger, 61, of Milton passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at her resident. Graveside services were conducted Saturday, August 28, 2004 at Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. She was born May 8, 1943, in El Paso, Texas , a daughter of the late Joseph and Melvin McGann. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sharon Harshbarger; one granddaughter, Hailey Harshbarger. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Allen Adkins

Allen Adkins, 63, of Huntington passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at his home. Funeral services were conducted Friday, August 27, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Charles Norris. Burial in Bowen Cemetery. He was was born December 22, 1940, in Wayne County, a son of the late Ivan Adkins and Ida Porter Adkins Thacker. He was a retired exterminator with Bruce Terminex and was a member of Freedom Independent Church Bradrick Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Littlejohn Adkins; three daughters and son-in-law, Sharon and Roger Sexton, Lisa and James Legg, all of Huntington and Vickie and Harry Frasher of Barboursville; five sisters, Virginia Nicely, Phyllis Nicely and Betty Adkins, all of Barboursville, Joyce Adkins and Debbie Mace, both of Wayne; brothers Rick Adkins of Chesapeake, Ohio, Gary Adkins of Huntington, and Earl Adkins of Barboursville; five grandchildren, Brandi Sexton, Dusty Sexton, Jimmy Legg, Michael Legg and Christopher Legg; and two special “grandchildren” Beccie and Sarah Mace.

Bessie F. Tomlinson

Bessie F. Tomlinson, 99, of Eleanor died Thursday, October 14, 2004, in SunBridge of Putnam after a long illness.

She was a member of Red House Independent United Brethren Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis R., her son, Robert L., and her grandson, David M.

Surviving: daughter-in-law, Doris; granddaughters, Debbie of Hurricane and Dreama of Eleanor; great-granddaughter, Bobbie Jo Hescht; a host of family and friends.

Service was held Saturday, October 16, 2004, at Red House Independent United Brethren Church with the Rev. Jerry Ranson officiating. Burial was in Center Point Cemetery, Liberty. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Mae Edna Whittington

Mae Edna Craig Whittington, 85, of St. Albans, formerly from Nitro, died Wednesday, October 13, 1004, at home.

She was the daughter of the late Charlie and June Craig of Buffalo. She was also preceded by daughter, Linda Wells, son, Paul Alvin Whittington, and four brothers.

Surviving: children, Violet Whittington of Nitro, Evelyn Parrish and husband, Rick, of St. Albans, Cecil Whittington and wife, Patty, of Columbus, Ohio, Aunita Dickerson, with whom she made her home, of St. Albans, Glenda Brester of Cross Lanes, Rich Whittington and wife, Amelia, of Cross Lanes, Deborah Harris of St. Albans, Ernest Whittington and wife, Debbie, of St. Albans, Jeanette Dempsey and husband, Darin, of Huntington; 30 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Service was held Saturday, October 16, 2004, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Joe Scarberry presiding. Burial was in Haven of Rest Cemetery, Red House.

Linda “DeDe” Wolford

Linda “DeDe” Wolford, 56, of Hurricane died suddenly on Wednesday, October 13, 2004, at home.

Surviving: husband, Chuck Wolford; mother and father, Christine and Bob White of Nitro; grandmother and adopted mother, Opal Adkins of Nitro; son, Cameron Carr and his wife, Leslie, and their children, Cierra and Cory of St. Albans; daughter, Michele Carr and her children, Danny Carr and Julian Davis of Hurricane; brother, Hugh Christy of St. Albans; sister-in-law, Suzanne Love of Palm Bay, Florida; brother-in-law, Robert Wolford of Hurricane; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service was held Sunday, October 17, 2004, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Joe Hyde officiating. Burial was in Montgomery Memorial Park beside her son, Brad Wilkerson.

Terry Van Cochran

Terry Van Cochran, 44, of Poca died Thursday, October 14, 2004, in CAMC Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He was a native of Putnam County.

He was preceded in death by his father, Golden H. Cochran, and brother, Tracy Cochran.

Surviving: mother, Virginia Martin Cochran of Poca; sisters, Lucy Palmer of West Palm Beach, Florida, Stella Cock of Danville and Debbie Cochran of Poca; brothers, Douglas Cochran of Mount Zion, Illinois, Gary Cochran of West Palm Beach, Timothy Cochran of Red House, Kerry Cochran of Byron, Georgia.

There was no service. Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, was in charge of arrangements.

Effie Kinder Lipscomb

Effie Kinder Lipscomb, 99, of Hurricane died October 13, 2004, at home.

Born August 18, 1905 in Quick, Effie was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane, and a 76-year resident of Putnam County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Braxton L. Lipscomb, daughter, Olive Glenda Lipscomb.

Surviving: sons, Braxton Lipscomb Jr. of Crab Orchard, Samuel Lipscomb of Marietta, Ohio and Frank Lipscomb of Teays; daughters, Eunice Towncry and Arlene Briggs, both of Herndon, Virginia and Betty Handley of Teays; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren.

Service was held Sunday, October 17, 2004, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane, with Dr. Kregg Burris officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
