Donald E. Munday

Mr. Donald E. Munday, 66, died March 18 at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer. He was born in Evansville, Ind., to Ralph and Gertrude Munday on Jan. 31, 1943. Donald completed his education and became a mechanic working in the mining industry.

In 2004 he left Winslow, Ind., to follow the love of his life, Mary Dietz to Alaska. Donald always regretted that due to health concerns he was unable to get out and experience Alaska as he would have liked. Donald was a member of the NRA, and avid Palin supporter and had enjoyed his affiliation with the American Legion.

Mr. Munday is survived by Mary Dietz, of Wasilla; son, Donald Munday of Indianapolis, Ind.; daughters, Connie Jo Munday of Oakland City, Ind., step-daughters; Donna Conway of Wasilla and Nicole Chambers of Elko, Nevada; grandchildren, Jennika and Jessica Conway, Amanda Conway all of Wasilla, Alexis Tiner and Britney Tiner of Elko and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Gertrude Munday, brother Charles Munday and an infant sister.

Donald was taken to Boonville, Ind., for burial. His service was held March 24 with burial in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Boonville.

Local arrangements were handled by Valley Funeral Home - Wasilla.

Jezreel Herr

Jezreel Shayna Herr, 9, died Sept. 14, 2007, at home in Meadow Lakes due to complications from merosin-deficient congenital muscular dystrophy.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Church of the Nazarene, 1951 N. Hemmer Road, Palmer. Pastor Mickey Boyle will officiate and a potluck will follow the service.

Shayna was born Dec. 19, 1997, in Anchorage and was in the fourth grade attending Meadow Lakes Elementary School. She worked with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Make-A-Wish Foundation every year to raise money for those organizations.

Shayna was a very special young lady who touched everyone around her. She loved being outdoors with family and friends, and especially liked MDA camp and all the activities and counselors. Shayna looked forward each year the MDA telethon and working with the KTUU television news crew. She enjoyed doing commercials for MDA and Harley Davidson along with participating in the Harley Davidson Live Ride for MDA. She loved going to the Alaska State Fair, company-sponsored picnics, camping and kayaking, She loved her time at Meadow Lakes Elementary and all the teachers and staff. She looked forward to attending school each day.

Shayna is survived by parents George and Aimee of Meadow Lakes; sister Keera; grandparents Allen and Linda Dorman of Soldotna, Sue and Keith Dedrick of Wasilla, George Herr of Kasilof and Linda Herr of Kenai; great-grandparents Glen Dorman of Burns Flat, Okla., Max and Barbara Walck of Payne, Okla., George and Nancy Herr of Soldotna and John and Elaine Clary of Soldotna; aunts and uncles Brandi Herr and Mark Carney of Wasilla, Aaron and Tyra Dorman of Soldotna, Kendall Dorman of Soldotna, Robert Herr of Kenai and Ken Martin of North Kenai; cousins Amelia, Feona and Waylen Carney of Wasilla, Blaize, Miranda and Abraham Dorman of Soldotna; and many other great aunts, uncles and cousins.

Valley Funeral Homes and Crematory of Wasilla and Palmer is assisting the family.

Jimmie Alan Tibbets

Mr. Jimmie Alan Tibbets, 64, of Wasilla, passed away March 21 at Elemendorf Air Force Base. Jimmie was born March 11, 1945 in Hanford, Calif., to Earl and Velma Jane Lowry Tibbets.

Jimmie completed his education with an Rh.P from the University of Washington and an MBA from the Oregon Institute of Technology. He served his country as a Corpsman in both the Navy and the Marine Corp. While in the service he served three tours of duty in Vietnam. During which time he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Jimmie came to Alaska in 1995 and resided in Palmer until 2000 then moving to Wasilla where he resided until his death. He worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs, Roseburg, Ore.; Mercy Hospital, Roseburg, Ore.; Mat-Su Regional Medical Center and Anchorage Regional Hospital. He finally retired in 2008.

Jimmie enjoyed fishing, reading and loved Alaska.

Jimmie Alan Tibbets is survived by his wife Du Thi Tran of Wasilla; son, Trevor E. Kidd (Alexandria) Renton, Wash., stepson, Thien Tran, Wasilla; brother, Richard E. Tibbets (Dixie), Medford, Ore.; and sister, Peggy Fine (John) of Roseburg, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Velma Tibbets and sister, Roxy Arlene.

There will be a Memorial Service on Tuesday at 11 a.m., at the Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla, 151 E. Herning Ave., Wasilla.

Arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory in Wasilla.

Mary Virginia Smith

Long time Alaskan resident, Mary V. Smith, 82, died March 26 at home of natural causes.

Mrs. Smith was born Oct. 11, 1926 in Jacksonville, Texas to Joseph and Anna Martin. After graduating from Reagan High School in Houston, Texas, she worked for the Navy as a clerk during WWII. In 1946, she married Bill Holbert. With their young daughter, Donnell, they were stationed at Fort Knox, Ky.

In 1950, Mrs. Smith married Capt. William Westfall. While at Fort Knox, their sons, Karl and Keith were born. In 1952 the family was transferred to Fort Richardson where their third son, Kurt was born. After meeting friends who had homesteaded in the Knik area they got the homesteading bug themselves and homesteaded 160 acres on Lake Beth. Eventually they got it right and had two daughters, Katy and Kristi.

After divorcing Bill Westfall and moving back to Anchorage, she went to work for FAA where she worked until her retirement in the1980s. She married Walter W. Smith in 1962. They raised the family in their East Anchorage home. In 1968, she decided to take advantage of the new FAA flying club and earned her private pilot’s license. She also enjoyed adventures in the outdoors — hunting at the cabin and participating in the Gem and Mineral Society’s trips to remote places in Alaska. She especially enjoyed her trips to Iditarod and Flat, Alaska. She was an avid gardener, quilter and photographer.

Her family wrote: “Our mother was very honest and direct and would tell it as it was. She was a generous mother and grandmother with her affection and knowledge. She was always willing to share her wisdom but allowed her children to choose their own way.”

Mrs. Smith is survived by her brother, Larry A. Martin of Alpine, Texas; sons, Keith (LaDonna) Westfall of Big Lake, Kurt (Nat) Westfall of Wasilla; daughters, Katy Westfall Neher and Kristi (Erika) Westfall Jacobs of Anchorage, Donnell (Walter) Wyatt of Henderson, Nevada. Grandchildren, Heather (Arnold) Velasquez of Ignacio, Colo., Heidi Westfall of Houston, Texas, Kortnie and Kaleb Westfall of Big Lake, Mary (Chris) Van Buskirk of Wasilla, Mary Jo (Mick) Neher-Laymon of Chicago, Liberty (Ray) Lally, Spencerville, N.Y., Chelsey Jacobs of Cape Coral, Fla., Buster (Becky) Morris of Casper, Wyo., Charles Guy Morris of Henderson, Nevada and Richard Morris of London, England. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Anne Burt, of Anchorage and a extended family in the Lower 48. Mrs. Smith was blessed with 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter W. Smith, son, Karl W. Westfall and granddaughter, Melissa J. Neher.

A memorial service is planned for Thursday at 1 p.m., (visitation will precede the service at noon) at Alaska Heritage Memorial Chapel, 440 E. Klatt Road. A reception following the service will be held at Chester Park Co-op, 2020 Muldoon Road. The family suggests memorials to the charity of their choice.

Robin Lewis McCarty

Surrounded in the warmth and love of family, Our Heavenly Father called his beloved son, Robin Lewis McCarty home on March 25. Robin, 49, was born in Seattle on July 21, 1959, the eldest child of Pearl L. Teter McCarty and raised by Pearl and Russell McCarty in Washington. Robin moved to Alaska in 1976 where he met and married his best friend Lorill Ann Edwards.

Robin possessed many gifts that he freely shared with those he knew. He would always help a friend in need, be a shoulder to cry on, lend an ear to listen, fix anything he could for you and always, always make you laugh. Robin had a remarkable appetite for fun. Being in the company of family and friends and doing anything outside was the ultimate joy to Robin. He enjoyed sharing time fishing, camping, four wheeling, motorcycling, hiking, with all those he loved. His heart truly belonged to his family and friends in the beautiful state of Alaska. Throughout his life he expressed deep love and adoration for his grandsons. We feel Robin will continue to guide and watch over them from the other side.

He is survived by his loving and devoted family, wife Lorill Ann McCarty, son Robin Adair McCarty, daughter Clarisa Rose Hochmuth and son-in-law Glenn C. Hochmuth, grandsons Elijah Roy Hochmuth and Issac Glenn Hochmuth whom he deeply treasured. As well as his mother Pearl L. Teter McCarty, siblings and their spouses; Pamela Ray and Melinda Norton, Randall Dean and Robyn Christman-McCarty, Kevin Roy and Tina McCarty, Kathi Lea and Rod Mael, Kay-Lynn and Shane Fausett. Mother-in-law Lois G. Edwards, brother-in-law Daniel Lee Edwards. Robin’s nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins will all miss big Rob.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather Lewis Edger Teter, grandmothers Evelyn Bethal Derr and Helen Leona Teter, father Russell Roy McCarty, father-in-law Ernest Adair (Sonny) Edwards and beloved cousin Mark JJ Matuszewski.

Memorial’s will be held at Wasilla American Legion Post 35 on Sunday at 4 p.m. For more information or directions, call 376-3500.

The family extends a special thanks to Hospice of Washington and the staff members for their loving care and assistance. And particular thanks to the American Legion Post 35 for their continued support of Robin’s family.

Clyde A. Bozarth

Clyde A. Bozarth, 58, passed away Feb. 22 at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.

Clyde was born Sept. 8, 1950 in Placerville, Calif. He was a Vietnam War veteran. After serving in the war he was a logger as his family owned a logging business in California.

He moved to Alaska in 1982 where he did commercial fishing in Dutch Harbor. He later moved on to become an electrician. He loved to ride his motorcycle in the summertime and enjoyed John Wayne movies. He loved to spend time with his family especially his grandchildren.

Clyde was preceded in death by his brother John and both of his parents. He is survived by his wife Darl, son Joshua, grandchildren Stephen, Justin and Hailey, daughter Michelle, son-in-law Eric, brothers Byron and Connie and sisters Linda and Mary.

Clyde will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1-3 p.m., on Saturday at the AMVETS hall, 1591 Creste Foris in Wasilla.

John Francis Borisuck

John Francis Borisuck, 91, died March 24 at home with his daughter Penne Chmielewski and son-in-law Michael R. Senta after a brief illness. He was born in Naugatuck, Conn., Oct. 29, 1917 the son of the late Feodor and Eilena (Miskevich) Borisuck. He retired from the Research and Development Division of Uniroyal as a mechanical engineer after 43 years. He held several patents.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years Isabel Hugar Borisuck, three daughters and son-in-law Penelope Chmielewski and Michael Senta, Palmer; Jacqueline and Paul Welle, West Chester, Pa.; and Gretchen and Edward Usawicz, Naugatuck, Conn. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Tasha Florez, Thaddeus Chmielewski, Alex Chmielewski, Heather Lee, Heidi Watson, Nathan Welle, John Welle, Gretchen Welle, Isobel Usawicz and Jacob Usawicz; seven great-grandchildren, Mateo and Julian Florez, Tiana and Jaxson Lee, Sophia and Charlie Watson and Ivan Usawicz.

A sister Mary Borisuck Stopper and a brother, Walter Borisuck are deceased.

John moved to Alaska seven years ago. A man of many talents, he enjoyed his family and appreciated the gifts of life. In the words of Robert Frost he would say “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: It goes on.”

A celebration of life will be held at the Summer Solstice for family and friends.

Mercedes Badillo

Longtime Alaskan Mercedes (Mercy) Badillo, 79, passed away March 10, 2009 at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center.

A visitation will be held in Anchorage at St. Patrick’s Church, 2111 Muldoon Road on Thursday at 10 a.m., with a celebration of life following at 11 a.m.

Mercy was born in San Antonio, Texas on March 21, 1929. She graduated high school and retired from AAFES (Army & Air Force Exchange Services).

In 1952 she moved to Alaska where her husband was stationed at Ft. Richardson. The two remained in Alaska the rest of their lives.

Mercy loved being around people, socializing and dancing. She will be greatly missed by her family and all those that she touched.

Mercy is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Badillo, granddaughter Sharday Badillo, sisters Amelia Aguirre, Aurora (Josie) Zavala, Laura Linares, Nancy Ford, Amalia Aguirre, Adaline Gutierrez and brother Saul Aguirre.

Mercy is survived by her only son and daughter in law Victor and Becky Badillo, granddaughter Brittany Badillo (Leo Pizette), step- granddaughter Amanda Brentor, step-grandson Andrew Carey, great-granddaughter Guilianna Badillo-Pizette, step-great-granddaughter Sahara Brentor, sisters Mary Gonzales, Angie Macias, Rose Royce and brothers Alfred Aguirre and Raul Aguirre.

Abrossium Cherepanov

Abe Cherepanov, 85, of Greensboro, N.C., and formerly of Sutton and Parksville, N.Y., died March 7 at Beacon Place Hospice in Greensboro.

Born Oct. 8 1924 in Russia, his family immigrated to China where he grew up and served in the Chinese Nationalist Army until he immigrated with others to the U.S. with the help of the Tolstoy Foundation in Valley Cottage, N.Y., in 1948.

He was a union mason and bricklayer, also a farmer and an excellent horseman.

He retired in Sutton where he enjoyed fishing, hunting and a small farm for 27 years until he relocated in Greensboro.

He is survived by his children Anna Maxey of Greensboro, Katerina Cronk of Liberty N.Y., Sophia Pressman of St. Louis, Mo., Peter Cherepanov of Knoxville, Tenn., Tim Cherepanov of Neversink, N.Y., Steven Cherepanov and Andrew Cherepanov of Liberty, N.Y. He is also survived by many grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m., at the Holy Cross Orthodox Church at 645 Greensboro Rd., High Point N.C.

Graveside services will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery, 4426 Central Ave., Charlotte, N.C.

Helen Rathbun

Helen Rathbun, Grandma and Mom to most, was born Dec. 27, 1934 in Big River, Alaska to Gleman and Martha Easi. She attended school at Wrangell Institute.

Helen enjoyed spending her time at the American Legion Post 35 with her friends and best friend Eva. She enjoyed being on the road, camping and berry picking. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren compete at World Eskimo Indian Olympics and Native Youth Olympics. She enjoyed playing bingo with her friends and family. She enjoyed summers in McGrath sitting with friends at Joe’s and McGuire’s. When she was at home she would spend time listening to classic country music and crocheting.

Helen passed away March 2 at her home in Wasilla.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin, daughter Michelle, step-son Robert and sons Forest and Einar. Helen is survived by her children, Carol, Martha, Herman, Stella, Donne, Jo, John, Nina and Matthew, her step-children, Richard, Randy and Ronald. She had 12 children and four step-children, over 27 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

At her request there will be no service. There will be a celebration of life at Susitna Valley American Legion Post 35 in Wasilla on Thursday at 1 p.m. A potluck will follow the service. A celebration of life will also be held in McGrath at a later date.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Hasara Family at the Cremation Society of Alaska.
