Randall William Hamann

Randall “Randy” William Hamann, 62, died Feb. 18 at home in Palmer of colon cancer.

Randy was born Dec. 15, 1946 in Rochester, Minn., to LeRoy Martin and Gretchen Alfreda Hamann.

A celebration of life was Thursday at Lazy Mountain Bible Church in Palmer. Pastors Dave Dahms, Dave Kenny and Bruce Rowell officiated.

Memorial contributions can be made to Lazy Mountain Bible Church for the Randy Hamann Remembrance Fund.

Randy moved to Palmer at the age of 1 month. He attended schools in Palmer and Technical Aeronautical Courses at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.

Randy was an aircraft mechanic working on helicopters in Interior Alaska. He was instrumental in building the Independence Mine Ski Lodge at Hatcher Pass and helping his brother with the Laundry Mat in Palmer. Then he returned to the North Slope driving truck during the building of the Alaska Pipeline. He traveled to South America and the Caribbean working at numerous jobs. While in Western Alaska he was employed at Nyack Gold Mine, D&G Express and ERA Aviation in Bethel.

While in Bethel, Randy met and married Janet “his bride.” By this marriage he added to his family. Each one of them had a special place in his heart.

Randy attended The Bethel Evangelical Covenant Church, Palmer First Baptist and Lazy Mountain Bible Church.

Randy was always sharing his faith with everyone around him. His love of God was shown to the prisoners through the God Pod Prison Ministry.

He was always helping and teaching youth through Child Evangelism Fellowship. He held the position as a board member of CEF in Alaska. He attended CEF conferences in Warrenton, Mo.

Because of his love for airplanes and maintenance safety, Randy received an Aviation Maintenance Phase II Silver Award.

He enjoyed doing woodworking, playing board games with his grandchildren, traveling, fishing, helping and praying for others.

Randy will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He leaves his wife Janet; daughter and son-in-law Deanna and Mark Thomas; grandchildren Jessica, Uriah and Lydia Thomas; great grandchildren Victoria, Dante, and Sebastian; his brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Delores Hamann; brother Errol Hamann; and numerous nephews, nieces and many friends.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents LeRoy Martin and Gretchen Alfreda Hamann; brothers LaVern, Blaine and sister Jean.

Arrangements are with Kehl’s Palmer Mortuary.

Inez Marie Koeniger

Inez Marie Koeniger, 69, died of cancer, Feb. 26 peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 323 N. Alaska St., in Palmer.

Inez was born July 25, 1939 in Bismarck, N.D. An eldest of six children, she was looked up to by all her siblings. She never thought of herself as a role model and yet she was all her life.

She lived and started her family on a small farm in Balsam Lake, Wis. She lived in Minnesota where she raised her fa mily. She and her husband, Eugene A. Raska Sr. moved to Salem, Ore., in 1977. In 1981 her family moved to Anchorage. She drove school bus, worked for the Salvation Army and Carrs bakery. Her final career being 14 years as a Cake Decorator for Costco #10 in Anchorage. Her husband of 42 years died in 1998. She remarried in 2003 and moved to Palmer. She retired from work in 2004. She devoted her retired years to her family, her church, VFW Post #9785, and cancer functions. Inez loved life, family and friends, she honestly showed this and people were drawn to her because of it. She would be the first person to step up and volunteer to do any task she saw needed doing.

Her hobbies included knitting, baking, crossword puzzles, movies, Wii gaming, exercising, dancing, the occasional vacation Outside and loved a good joke.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Eugene A. Raska Sr., sister, Shirley J. Anderson and friend, Judy Johnson.

She is survived by her second husband Stephen Koeniger of Palmer, children, Eugene A. Raska, Jr., of Kenai, Lori L. Angstman of Anchorage, Brenda L. Barjheron of Peters Creek, Timothy W. Raska of Palmer, Mark A. Raska of Wasilla, Shannon E. Thomas of Palmer, 22 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, sisters, Sharon M. Pyles of Palmer, Trudy A. Wandersee, of Wilmar, Minn., Linda K. Morgan of Anchorage, and brother, Darrell Morgan of Atlanta.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations can be sent to St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church of Palmer in memory of Inez Koeniger.

Arrangements are with Kehl’s Palmer Mortuary.

Joyce Deane Adams Rosenthal

Palmer resident Joyce Deane Adams Rosenthal died at home with family on Feb. 19. She was buried in the Palmer Pioneer Cemetery on Feb. 21.

Joyce was born on Dec. 16, 1933 in Charlotte, N. C. She moved with her family to Rome, Ga., then to Houston, Texas. At San Jacinto High she was a member of the drill team, the Gauchos, and enjoyed dancing all of her life. After graduation she worked at the Prudential Insurance offices for several years before her marriage on Jan. 24, 1953 to Charles Henry ‘Hank’ Rosenthal. During her marriage to Hank, job moves took them across the country, from Texas, to Illinois, to New Jersey, to New York, to North Carolina to Washington and to Alaska. At every location, she made the houses, homes.

Joyce arrived in Alaska in August of 1969. She left Alaska in 1974, returning in 1980. Family and home were her priorities. She welcomed all and was a fabulous cook and hostess. She supported her husband and children, Lynn and Matt, in all their activities. Her love for her family was complete and unconditional. As her children married and had children, she delighted in each addition to the family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

She volunteered her time to the community through church and Scouting activities. Later she spent many years working at the Bishop’s Attic, first as a volunteer, then as an employee. Her job there gave her much joy which she shared by singing while she worked. A member of the Lutheran Church, she knew and loved the Lord. During these last years she would look at the mountains and sky, and say Heaven is up there, and I’ll be going there one day. We just wish the time had not come so soon for her to be gone from us.

She is survived by her daughter and spouse Lynn and Butch Hallford and his mother, Jean Williams, grandchildren Kate, Kate’s fiancé, Dwight, Kelsey, Dock, Carli, Emma and her son’s widow Tammi Rosenthal. Joyce is also survived by loving family in the Lower 48. All will miss her sweet and kind nature.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, Hank, and her son, Matt.

A memorial service will be held on May 15 at 5 p.m., at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Anchorage. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Eric Logan

Anchorage resident Eric Logan, 43, died Feb. 21 of a heart attack while snowmobiling in the mountains of Petersville.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel, 440 East Klatt Rd., with Pastor Michael DuPree officiating. There will be a visitation at noon.

He will be interred at Angelus Memorial Park in the spring.

Eric was born Dec. 5, 1965 to Garth and Carla Logan in Estherville, Iowa.

He came to Alaska in 1969.

Eric and Dianna were married in 1995 in a quiet cove at Big Lake.

Eric was in the graduating class of 1984 at Service High School in Anchorage. He also received a bachelor’s degree from Wayland Baptist University and a master’s degree in Project Management from Aspen University.

He was employed with Alaska Power and Telephone for the last 15 years as their general manager of operations.

Eric enjoyed snowmobiling and playing volleyball.

His family said, “Eric will live in our hearts every day. His optimistic and happy spirit will always be there to guide us. He was a perfect husband, father, son, brother and friend. He will always be loved and remembered.”

He is preceded in death by his brother, Grant Logan and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Eric is survived by his wife, Dianna Logan; daughters, Brooke Logan, Julia Logan, Ashley Logan and Valerie Heinrichs; father, Garth Logan; mother, Carla Logan; sister, Des Logan; brother, Clint Logan; sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Brent Heisler and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the daughters of Eric Logan, “special account”, First National Bank Alaska, Dianna Logan.

Arrangements are with Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel.

James R. McDowell

James “Jimmy” R. McDowell, 35, of Palmer, passed away March 16, 2010.

A service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 440 E. Elmwood in Palmer. Pastor J. Rockey will officiate.

James was born May 4, 1974, in Boise, Idaho, to Richard McDowell and Maggie Erickson. He graduated from high school in Idaho Falls, where he played the drums, participated in ballroom dancing and was a top cross-country runner. He was also a Seminary graduate.

During this time, James enjoyed his time as an Eagle Scout and a member of the Cedar Badge Staff at Treasure Mountain Scout Camp. James furthered his education at the University of Idaho, where he earned a degree in education and was deservedly awarded “Freshman of the Year.” James remained a loyal Vandal, despite the ribbing he received from his Bronco side of the family in Boise. He later received his master’s degree in education from the University of Alaska Anchorage. A career in public education naturally followed James’ education, where he worked as a teacher, technology coordinator and administrator in the Alaska education system. At the time of his passing, James was the production manager at the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman.

James was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. Those who knew him loved him, and he touched the lives of more than he knew. His time here was far too short, and he will be remembered.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa McDowell; parents, Richard McDowell of Garden Valley, Idaho, and Maggie Erickson of Kimberly, Idaho; step-father, Robert Erickson; step-mother, Jan McDowell; son, Alex and daughter, Kimberly Jean; grandmother, Velma McDowell; brother, Nathan (Jessica) Erickson; sisters, Mary (Kent) Bowman, Georgia (Eric) Arnold and Whitney Erickson; step-brothers, Dennis (Stacey) Chesnut and Chris (Erin) Chesnut; and step-sister, Heidi (John) Mordoff.

Honorary pallbearers will be Alex McDowell, Nathan Erickson, Dennis Chesnut, Chris Chesnut, Eric Arnold, Kent Bowman, Thomas Finch Jr., and Mohammod Heremi.

In lieu of flowers, and in James’ memory, lend your support to public schools.

Cody Hester

Cody Hester passed away March 9, 2010.

He went to heaven to be embraced by God and reunited with his older brother, Brendan, and his younger brother, Wesley. God’s grace has made his body strong and healthy, and he is able to run and do all the things that he was not able to do here on earth.

Cody had a strong will to live. His courage, positive attitude and zest for life were, and will always be, an example for us to live by. During his brief 21 years here on earth, he touched many people’s lives. Cody will be loved, missed and remembered forever; he was so loved by his family and friends.

Cody fought a lifelong illness (muscular dystrophy). He was a shining example of living life to the fullest and a reminder to those around him to be grateful for all of our many blessings.

Cody is survived by his mother, Melissa; step-father, Scott; sister, Haley; and little brother Wyatt. His grandparents are Dane and Patty Shaver and Raymond Thompson. He is also survived by his uncle, Norman, and aunt, Myra Broderick, and cousins, Christy Kepler, Amanda Broderick and Larissa Blum.

Cody was preceded in death by his brothers, Brendan Hester and Wesley Ivanoff.

A viewing will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., followed by a funeral at 3 p.m. at the Valley Funeral Home, 151 E. Herning Ave., in Wasilla.

Memorial donations for the service, flowers and cards are welcome. A small gathering will be held after the service to share favorite stories of Cody.

Cody’s family would like to express its gratitude to everyone for their outpouring of love, sympathy, support and prayers. Thank you.

Arrangements were with Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla.

Gene Albert Haverlandt

Longtime Wasilla resident Gene Albert Haverlandt, 63, died peacefully on March 13, 2010, surrounded by family in his Wasilla home.

Memorial services will be held at noon Saturday at the Valley Funeral Home Palmer Chapel, 2020 North Hemmer Road in Palmer. Chaplain Stuart Mitchell will officiate. Additional services will be held in Montana at a future date.

Gene was born Sept. 8, 1946, in Eureka, Mont., where he learned to fish, trap, hunt and work. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1963.

He married Linda and had three children — Daphne, Darcy and Deanna. From 1965 to 1974, they lived in and around Trego, Fortine, Deep Creek and Whitefish, Mont. He worked many professions; as a logger, a laborer for Burlington Northern and a construction worker of the Libby Dam in Montana. Gene moved to Alaska in 1974 first to Anchorage, then to Chugiak and finally to Wasilla in 1983, where he resided near his daughters until his passing. He worked construction in Alaska and as a contractor until 1986, when he began his most passionate job as a fabricator/designer/shop foreman at Plaschem in Anchorage.

He referred to himself as a “jack of all trades and master of some.” Gene’s hobbies included flying, fishing, camping, trapping, hunting, drawing, writing, cooking and making anything he could with fiberglass. He was passionate about storytelling and often shared stories about his youth. The family and its history was most important in his life. He also enjoyed country music and gospel and played the guitar, teaching his girls how to sing and enjoy music.

“Gene’s hearty laugh and generous nature will be missed. He was generous with his knowledge and would give the shirt off his back to a co-worker or employee who needed help. Even during some of his toughest financial times he would find a way to keep his employees afloat, ” wrote the family.

Awaiting him in Heaven is his wife of 25 years, Linda W. Herron-Haverlandt, who passed away in 1990; father, Louis John Haverlandt Sr.; mother, Thelma Ruth Haverlandt; brother, Joe Neil Haverlandt; as well as many other aunts, uncles and friends he held very dear to him.

He leaves behind a multitude of family and friends including, but not limited to, daughters and sons in-law, Daphne and Greg Gurley of Chugiak, Darcy and Tim Schachle of Wasilla, and Deanna and Scott Humphreys of Wasilla; grandchildren, Chelsea and Tyler Gurley, Timothy, Jaclyne and James Schachle, Alyssa and Alex Humphreys all of Alaska; brother, Louis John Haverlandt Jr. of Colorado; sister and brother in-law, Ginger and Ed St. Onge of Montana; dear nieces and nephews, Jay, Kelly, Kathy St. Onge, Suzie, Charie and Diane McDonald, Tehila, Onawa and Neil Haverlandt, Beau Hanson, and Tangie, Treena and Tricia Dickinson.

Arrangements were by Valley Funeral Home & Crematory.
