Betty G. Marlar
JONESBORO — Betty G. Marlar, 71, of Jonesboro died Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at St. Bernards Medical Center.
She was born in Sumrall-Covington, Miss., and had lived in Jonesboro since 1962, moving here from Jackson, Miss. She was a secretary for the City of Jonesboro and a member of the Walnut Street Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fate and Virgie Atwood Graham, and one son, David Michael Marlar.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald Marlar of the home; one son, Tim Marlar and wife Dena of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Liz Francis of Jonesboro; one granddaughter, Laura Francis; and one great-grandson, Beau Connell.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Curtis Shatley officiating. Burial will be in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel.
Active pallbearers will be Mark Osborn, George M. Osborn, Caleb Osborn, Jacob Osborn, Craig Scallions and Marty Lamb.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Suiter, Bill Cook, Gene McPherrin, Darrell Williamson, Jim Cole, J.C. Moses, Jim Clardy and Don Barnes.
The family requests that lasting memorials be made to Walnut Street Baptist Church, 1910 Scenic Drive, Jonesboro 72401.
O.C. Pickens Jr.
JONESBORO — O.C. Pickens Jr. passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010. “Daddo,” as he was affectionately known to his family, was 94 years old.
Mr. Pickens was born to O.C. Pickens Sr. and Brilla Croom Pickens on Jan. 5, 1916, at Clover Bend in Lawrence County. Mr. Pickens worked first as a school teacher, then later as a sales manager for various companies. He was the manager of the Pic-Walsh Freight Co. in his hometown of Jonesboro for many years.
Mr. Pickens’ life was devoted to the church, his wife Catherine, his family and friends. He was an elder for many years in the Downtown Church of Christ in Jonesboro.
“Daddo” was 27 years old with a wife and two small boys at home when, in 1943, he was called to service in World War II. His artillery company immediately found itself in the thick of many battles, most notably the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Pickens was preceded in death by his mom and dad; brothers, Hank, Ebb and Don Pickens; and his cherished grandson, Stephen McDaniel.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 74 years, Catherine “Toots” Blanton Pickens; sons and daughters-in law, Jim and Sue Pickens of Little Rock, and Dick and Paula Pickens of Jonesboro; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Larry McDaniel of Paragould; a brother, John of Edmond, Okla.; six grandchildren, Mike Pickens of Little Rock, Sandy Pickens Noble of Rogers, Karen Pickens Jones, Paul and John Pickens, all of Jonesboro, and Susan McDaniel Brittingham of Paragould; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Drs. Danny Grubbs and Anthony White, as well as to the special people who were his caregivers for the last few weeks of his life, Rachel Perry, Betty Proctor and Alice Guy.
Thanks also to the staff of NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital and Extended Home Health Agency.

Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 at Langford-Bookout Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Kenneth Gossett and Winston Burton officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Mike, John and Paul Pickens, James Brittingham, Keith Noble and Mark Jones.
Ross Runyan
MANILA — Ross Runyan, age 46, of Manila died Sunday at his home.
Born at Peoria, Ill., he was the son of the late Glenda Mae Wertz and had been a Manila resident for the past several years.
Survivors include two sons, Kyle Runyan and Joshua Runyan, and one daughter, Brandy Palmer. He also leaves three brothers and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Howard Funeral Service of Manila is in charge of arrangements.
Doyle Smith
FAIR OAKS — Doyle Charles Smith, a resident of Fair Oaks, departed this life Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at McCrory, at the age of 80.
He was born Feb. 23, 1930, at Deer, the son of Thomas Frank and Mary Elizabeth Boone Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by one sister, Willie Neal of McCrory, several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lewis Cemetery
at Hickory Ridge. Thompson-Wilson Wynne Funeral Home, 238-9400, has charge of arrangements.
Leroy Smith
JONESBORO — Leroy Smith, 50, of Jonesboro died Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at St. Bernards Medical Center.
No services are scheduled at this time.

Bessie W. Williams
TRUMANN — Mrs. Bessie G. Pugh Whitlatch Williams, 95, of Trumann died Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at Trumann Health and Rehab.
She was born at Nettleton and had lived most of her life in Trumann. She was a housewife and member of the First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Otho Whitlatch, and her second husband, Leslie Williams; two sons, Freddie Whitlatch and H.L. “Bud” Whitlatch; two daughters, Nina Trenthem and Vivian Whitlatch; granddaughter, Audra Richardson Allen; two sisters; three brothers; and her parents, Joseph Lee and Mary Allie Akins Pugh.
Survivors include two daughters, Norma White and husband Bob, and Mary Jane Richardson and husband Richie, all of Trumann; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home in Trumann with Dr. Tad Rogers and Dr. Jerry Wilcox officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Doug Trenthem, Gary White, Greg White, Ryan Richardson, Nick Richardson and Colby White.
Visitation will be this evening from 5-7 at the funeral home.
Donald Ray Winstead
JONESBORO — Donald Ray Winstead, 67, passed away Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, at his residence.
He was born March 19, 1943, at Blytheville to the late Roy and Georgia Winstead.
Donald retired after 22 years in the Arkansas National Guard, was a volunteer fireman at Trumann and was assistant chief for several years. He was a deacon and member of the Walnut St. Baptist Church.
He was a member of the Trumann Masonic Lodge, currently serving as secretary. He enjoyed working with children as a coach and scoutmaster. He was in telecommunication for 43 years, beginning with United Telephone Co. in Monette, retiring as an ETAS engineer with Nortel in 2003 and taking full retirement from Optus in 2009. Donald also served on the Monette High School Alumni Board for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Winstead; a son and his wife, Brett and Cheyenne Winstead of Jonesboro; two daughters, Mikka Jones and husband Chris of Imboden, and Tamara Winstead of Jonesboro; four grandsons, Payden Winstead, Gannon Winstead, Ethan Winstead and Hunter Edwards; and two granddaughters, Autumn Blasingame and Lauren Jones.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Walnut Street Baptist Church with Masonic rites and fire department honor guard presentation. Dr. Glen Putman and the Rev. Jerry Parker will officiate. Burial will follow in Monette Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be tonight from 5-7 at Gregg Funeral Home in Jonesboro.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are deacons of Walnut St. Baptist Church.

Joe Wright
LUXORA — Joe Willie Wright, 62, of Luxora died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010. He was born June 8, 1948, to the late Henry Wright and Alice Mae Mosley.
Survivors include his children, Tyrone Henderson of St. Louis, Greg Chaplan of Texas, Bregman Grey of Memphis, Blake Wright, Tequila Jacobs and Nastassia Ramos, all of Osceola; siblings, Dorothy Humphrey of Chicago, Lillie Wright and Albert Wright, both of Luxora; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilson’s Osceola Funeral Home with burial in Whiteside Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday evening from 6-8.
Richard Loyd Brinkley
CHEROKEE VILLAGE — Richard Loyd Brinkley, 83, of Cherokee Village died Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
He was born May 21, 1927, at Jonesboro to the late Hubert and Montreal Elrod Brinkley. He lived in Memphis for more than 42 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and member of Hardy First Baptist Church.
Richard was also preceded in death by a son, Steven Douglas Brinkley; five sisters; and three brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Willey Brinkley of Cherokee Village; two sons, James David Brinkley of Memphis and Mark Edward Brinkley of Marietta, Ga.; a grandson, Nicholas Brinkley; three granddaughters, Cheslea Brinkley, Stephanie Nell and Adrienne Buffaloe; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Oaklawn Cemetery
at Jonesboro with the Rev. Larry Kendrick officiating under the direction of Langford-Bookout Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Heath Funeral Home in Hardy.
Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Haynes, Hap Harris and the men of the Fellowship Sunday School Class of Hardy First Baptist Church.
