Janet McCoy

The rosary and a Mass were held Tuesday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church for Janet Burson McCoy, 94, of Modesto. She died Friday, April 4, 2003.

Entombment was at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of the Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs.

Born Jan. 26, 1909, Mrs. McCoy was a native of Kansas City, Mo, and lived in Modesto for 55 years. She was a co-founder of McCoy Tire Co. She and her husband started the business in Bakersfield and sold it upon moving to Ceres. In 1950, they opened a tire store on Ninth Street, and the store and its branches are still in operation. Mrs. McCoy was a registered nurse in Los Angeles prior to moving to Bakersfield. She was a member of the Rug Hookers Guild and Del Rio Country Club. Mrs. McCoy was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

She leaves behind four children, Jack McCoy, Robert McCoy and Louise Barnick, all of Modesto, and Dan McCoy of Visalia; and 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John McCoy.

Val Garcia Sr.

A funeral service was held Friday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Val Garcia Sr., 94, of Hughson. He died Monday, May 26, 2003 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of Lakewood Funeral Home.

Born Feb. 12, 1909, Mr. Garcia was a native of the Philippines and lived in Hughson for 14 years. He previously lived in the San Jose area for 45 years. Mr. Garcia was a laborer in commercial construction for Laborer's union Local 270 for 35 years. He was an active member of First Southern Baptist Church in Waterford, American Legion and the Hughson Senior Citizens group.

He leaves behind his caregiver, Juanita Harp; two children, Val Garcia Jr. of Santa Cruz and Sharon Lee of Waterford; and three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Garcia.

Maria Martinez

A funeral service was held Monday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Maria de Jesus Rodriguez Martinez, 78, of Modesto. She died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at her home.

Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born Oct. 16, 1924 Mrs. Martinez was a native of Mexico and lived in Modesto for 39 years. She was a homemaker and member of the Jehovah's Witness church in Hughson.

She leaves behind three children, Eleazar Martinez Jr. and Mariaelena Velasquez, both of Modesto, and Hector Martinez of Hughson; four brothers, Francisco Rodriguez, Guadalupe Rodriguez, Gregorio Rodriguez and Manuel Rodriguez, all of Mexico; her sister, Minerva Rodriguez of Mexico; and 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her children Angel Martinez and Arturo Martinez; and one brother.

Onesimo G. Herrera

A Mass was held Monday at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Ceres, for Onesimo Garcia Herrera, 62, of Modesto. He died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003

Burial was at Ceres Memorial Park under the direction of Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.

Born March 31, 1941, Mr. Herrera was a native of Aguililla, Michoac‡n, Mexico, and had lived in Modesto since 1980. Mr. Herrera was a machine operator 25 years and was employed with S&W; Fine Foods.

He leaves behind his wife, Maria Herrera of Modesto; children, Girisela Gallardo of Turlock, and Alicia Vasquez, Blanca Barajas, Brenda Cardenas, Esmeralda Herrera, Yesenia Herrera and Alberto Herrera, all of Modesto; brothers, Cruz Herrera of Mexico and Eloi Herrera of Redwood City; sisters, Andrea Herrera and Teresa Herrera, both of Mexico, Ernestine Herrera, Olga Herrera and Mercedes Herrera, all of Los Angeles, and Lidia Herrera of Fresno; and 15 grandchildren.

Sarah D. King

A memorial service will be from 11 a.m to 6 p.m. Thursday at West Gate Mobile Home Club House for Sarah Delilah Slaughter King, 54, of Modesto. She died of natural causes Thursday, June 13, 2002 at her home.

Burial will be at San Joaquin Valley National cemetery in Santa Nella under the direction of Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.

Born Sept. 4, 1947, Mrs. King was a native of New Castle, Pa., and had lived in Modesto since 1974. She was a records technician at Modesto Junior College for 27 years. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Local survivors include daughter Suzanne King-Steffens of Hughson.

Sharon K. Levens

Services were held Aug. 5 at Vaca Hills Chapel in Vacaville for Sharon Kae Boatman Levens, 54, of Ceres. She died of natural causes Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

The Ceres Chapel of Franklin & Downs handled arrangements.

Born May 30, 1948, Mrs. Levens was a native of Woodland and lived in Ceres for 11 years. She previously lived in Modesto. Mrs. Levens was a homemaker.

She leaves behind her husband, William J. Levens of Ceres; her daughter, Jamie Papin of Magalia; and her mother, Mildred Bailey of Pennsylvania.

Remembrances may be sent to the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, 4733 Yosemite Blvd., Modesto, CA 95357.

Jaime Luis Reyes

A Mass was held Friday morning at St. Jude's Catholic Church for Jaime Luis Reyes, 14, of Ceres. He died at Doctors Medical Center from injuries sustained in an auto crash in South Modesto. His father, Jaime Reyes Pena, also died in the crash.

Evins Funeral Home was in charge of burial at Michoacan, Mexico.

Born Aug. 20, 1988, Jaime was a native of Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, and lived in Ceres for 10 years. He attended Ceres High School and St. Jude's Catholic Church in Ceres.

He leaves behind his mother, Maria Reyes of Ceres; his brother, Daniel Reyes of Ceres; and his grandparents, Miguel and Graciela Reyes Mejia of Michoacan, Mexico.

Loyd M. Watkins

Eaton Family Funeral & Cremation Service was in charge of private arrangements for Loyd M. Watkins, 53, of Ceres. He died of natural causes Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003 at his home.

Born Aug. 31, 1949, Mr. Watkins was a native of Vallejo, and lived in Ceres for a year. He was a landscape maintenance man for Kaiser Permanente for 30 years. Mr. Watkins was a member of the Benecia Presbyterian Church. He coached girls softball and enjoyed sports.

He leaves behind two children, Jason Watkins and Julie Watkins, both of American Canyon; and three sisters, Stella Gonzalez of Mississippi, Linda Bullock of Ceres, and Sherill Bradley of Calistoga.

Simon Jordan

A funeral service was held Thursday at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Modesto forSimon Jordan, 67, of Ceres. He died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003 at Doctors Medical Center.

Burial was at Ceres Memorial Park under the direction of Evins Funeral Home.

Born March 25, 1935, Mr. Jordan was native of Hazelhurst, Miss., and lived in Ceres for 47 years. He had worked at Signature and Tri Valley Growers Plant 7 in Modesto. Mr. Jordan also was a supervisor and mechanic for 44 years. He was a member of the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church and Silver Square Masonic Lodge 66, both in Modesto; Greyhound Association of America; and the Teamsters. Mr. Jordan enjoyed horse racing, hunting, dog racing, traveling and fishing.

He leaves behind his wife, Novella C. Jordan of Ceres; six children, James Manor Sr. of Modesto, Jerry Jordan of Denair, Simon Jordan of Las Vegas, Dorothy Marie Thomas and Faye Jordan, both of Oakland, and Blanche Mayberry of Fresno; four brothers, William Jordan of Hazelhurst, Miss., Monroe Jordan of Bay St. Louis, Miss., James L. Jordan of Stockton and Bobby Jordan of Sacramento; and two sisters, Rosie Beachman of Detroit and Carrie Mea Jordan of Hazelhurst, Miss. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.

Gerardo G. Medina

The rosary was held Sunday at Lakewood Funeral Home, with a Mass Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hughson for Gerardo G. Medina, 47, of Modesto. He died Thursday, April 3, 2003 at Doctors Medical Center.

Burial at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born Oct. 30, 1955, Mr. Medina was a native of Zacatecas, Mexico, and lived in Modesto for 42 years. He was a roofer for five years. Mr. Medina was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

He leaves behind his daughter, Michelle Magallannez of Modesto; his brother, Emilio Medina of Ceres; four sisters, Soledad Ocegueda and Maria Alcaraz, both of Hughson, Trina Alvarez of Riverbank and Antonia Gutierrez of Mexico; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Medina; and two brothers.

Jim L. Rich

Allen Mortuary was in charge of private services at Ceres Memorial Park for Jim Leon Rich, 61, of Turlock. The former Hughson resident died Monday, July 14, 2003 at Turlock Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Born July 22, 1941, Mr. Rich was a native of California and lived in Turlock five years. He previously lived in Hughson for many years. Mr. Rich was a general laborer in agriculture for 30 years.

He leaves behind five children, Mark Rich, Venetta Rich and Venesa Rich, all of Washington, Richy Rich of Porterville and Joyce Ann Ward of Lake Isabella; his brother, Roy Rich of Hughson; his sister, Brenda McMurtry of Tulare; and 15 grandchildren.

Glendine E. Legg

Funeral services were private for Glendine E. Marchese Legg, 57, of Ceres. She died of cancer at her home on Friday, Oct. 10, 2003.

Eaton Family Funeral & Cremation Service was in charge of arrangements.

Born Feb. 4, 1946, Mrs. Legg was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Ceres for 19 years. She was a certified nurse's assistant for Hale Aloha Convalescent Hospital in Ceres. Mrs. Legg was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church in Ceres.

She leaves behind her husband, Ken Legg of Ceres; her son, Theodore Marchese of Saugerties, N.Y.; two stepchildren, Kenneth Legg of San Diego, and Sharon Campbell of Stanton Island, N.Y.; her mother, Glendine Marchese of Englishtown, N.J.; her sister, Rosalie DeVito of Englishtown, N.J.; and two step-granddaughters.

Remembrances may be sent to Community Hospice, 601 McHenry Ave., Modesto, CA 95350; or the American Cancer Society, 1604 Ford Ave., Modesto, CA 95350.

Lillian J. Horton-Brooks

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lakewood Memorial Park for Lillian J. Horton-Brooks, 89, of Ceres. She died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

There will be no visitation. Lakewood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born Dec. 23, 1913, Mrs. Horton-Brooks was a native of Arkansas, and lived in Ceres for 35 years. She was a homemaker.

She leaves behind her son Roy Reeves of Ceres; her brother, J.D. Horton of Ceres; and sisters, Dorothy Spangler, JoAnn Mullins and Mae Gray, all of Ceres.
