Gregory Reece
Gregory Albert Reece, 52, of Encino died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003 in Rialto.
A native of Modesto, he had lived in Encino for 10 years. He was a high school teacher and coach in the Los Angeles area for over 30 years and most recently was a vice principal and athletic director. He was a mentor to many students.
A 1968 graduate of Escalon High School, he went to Pepperdine University on a baseball scholarship.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Morino Reece; parents, Darlene Minot and Al and Beverly Reece; four nieces and a nephew, Nicelle Miller-Herrington, Jacqueline Miller, Natalie Miller, Allyce Morino and Anthony Morino, all of Modesto.
Services were Monday, Sept. 29 at Saron Lutheran Church, Escalon with burial at Burwood Cemetery.

Mary Murphy
Mary M. Ord-Bookwalter-Roberson-Murphy, 102, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 at Courtyard Care Center in San Jose.
Born in Pawnee County, Nebraska, she had lived in San Jose for seven years and prior to that, was a 51-year resident of Escalon. She was a teacher in Nebraska for one year and a retail clerk in Escalon for 23 years. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed gardening and painting.
Survivors include her son, Don Bookwalter of San Jose; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, Dec. 5 at Deegan Funeral Chapel, Escalon with visitation preceding the service. Interment at Acacia Memorial Park, 801 Scenic Drive, Modesto.
Arrangements were by Deegan Funeral Chapel.
Lora Copeland
Manteca resident
Lora "Bea" (Nolen) Copeland died on Sunday in Modesto of cancer. She was 73 years old.
Mrs. Copeland was a Manteca resident for 63 years. She was born on October 29, 1928 in Poteau, Oklahoma. She was a licensed vocational nurse at San Joaquin General Hospital. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed country music, playing cards, and traveling with friends and family. Hawaii was her favorite destination. She was actively involved in the lives of her three children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The entire family knew that she was someone they could count on. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years Garland Copeland; children Barbara Crawford of Manteca, Ken Copeland of Dublin, and Kathy Howe of Manteca; brothers Wayne Nolen of Crescent City, and Jim Nolen of Galt; sisters Norma Wise of Arkansas, Judy Clark of Meadowvista, and Karen Underwood of Sacramento; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be observed on today from 1 to 5 p.m. at P.L. Fry and Son. A service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at P.L. Fry and Son. Interment will be at Lakewood Memorial Park. P.L. Fry & Son is in charge of arrangements.

Luther Woods
Manteca resident
Luther "Luke" Woods, 94, died Sunday in Coos Bay, Ore.
Mr. Woods was a native of Suprise, Okla., and was a resident of Manteca for 54 years. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local #3. He loved to travel, fish, and enjoyed being outdoors.
He is survived by his daughters Beulah Marie Altman of Coos Bay, Ore., Joyce Ann Clark of Salem, Ore.; son Timmy R. Woods of Turlock; sisters Ola Reynolds of San Francisco, Opal Painter of Los Banos; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Beulah R. Woods, son James Luther Woods who was MIA in the Korean Conflict, and his daughter Janice Woods.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday at Park View Cemetery. P.L. Fry & Son is in charge of arrangements.

Viola R. Allen
Former Manteca resident
Viola R. Allen of Wewoka, okla., passed away Sunday in a hospital in Seminole, Okla. Mrs. Allen was 88 years old. Mrs. Allen was born in Spiro, Okla. Mrs. Allen had lived in Wewoka, Okla. for two years, prior Manteca for 63 years.
She was a homemaker and a seamstress for many years. She was an active member of the Northgate Community Brethren Church. Volla enjoyed gardening and baking pies. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
Mrs. Allen is survived by her son Jack Allen of Manteca, son Steve Allen of Manteca; daughter Dorothy Massey of Wewoka, Okla.; daughter Carol Viss of Ripon; daughter Norma Ellis of Mokewmne Hill; brother Sherman Birchfield, of Spiro, Okla.; sister Odell Dix of Spiro, Okla.; sister Vinnie Lee Laughlin of Oakdale; brother James Birchfield of Lake Almadore; sister Mabel Porter of Ceres; 14 grandchildren , 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son Arvel W. Allen Jr. and sister Catherine Young.
There will be no visitation. Services will be today at 2 p.m. at P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be at East Union Cemetery.

Norman Victor Elliott
Custodian and artist
Norman Victor Elliott, 83, died on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003 in Manteca. Mr. Elliott was born on Dec. 15, 1919 in Dayton, Ohio. He married
Geraldine Priser on Dec. 13, 1947. He and Geraldine moved to California with their two-year old son Richard in January 1951. Roger Elliott was born in San Francisco in 1951 and Nancy Bryant was born in Redwood City in 1956.
Mr. Elliott is survived by his children Richard E. Elliott of Manteca, Roger Elliott of Flor., and Nancy Bryant of Livermore; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
During the 1930's, Mr. Elliott joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. (3-C's) serving with Co. 596, Camp Redmond BR-80, in Redmond, Ore. He often commented, "The three C-s taught us about work and gave us a choice in life after the Great Depression.
Mr. Elliott worked as a custodian throughout his life until retiring in 1985 when he and Geraldine moved back to Brookville, Ohio. During his retirement, Mr. Elliott pursued his dream of art, becoming an award-winning artist. After his wife passed away in 1996, Mr. Elliott moved to California, May 1997 to live with his son Richard in San Jose. In February 2002, they moved to Manteca.
Mr. Elliott will be interred at Arlington Cemetery, near Brookville, Ohio, along with his wife Geraldine.

Kent Cotterell
Korean War Veteran
Kent Cotterell, 70, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003 in Reno, Nevada. He was a native of Farnaham, Neb. and was born on April 5, 1932. He was a resident of Reno, Nevada for 18 years, previously lived in Manteca.
Mr. Cotterell is survived by his wife Ester Cotterell of Reno, Nev.; children, Debby Qualey and Gina Houck, both of Reno, Nevada; and 3 grandchildren.
Kent was a U.S. Army Veteran in the Korean War. He was the owner of the Lamplighter Lounge in Reno and a manager of Brawleys for 20 years.
P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. A Memorial Service will be Thursday, April 10, 2003, 2 p.m., 290 N. Union Rd. Interment will be private.
Margaret Denuit
Homemaker
Margaret Denuit died peacefully in her sleep at age 92 on Thursday, August 14, 2003 in Stockton. She was born January 12, 1911 to Charles Aniotzbehere and Jenny Ilharramendy and raised in various sheep camps in the mother lode before settling in Stockton. She worked as a saleslady at the Sterling, a clerk at the Triangle Bakery in Stockton and Tanaka's Rest Home in French Camp. She married
Raymond Denuit and they moved to French Camp, buying the old Priest home where the family has lived for 60 years.
Mrs. Denuit was very active in the French Camp community. When her children started school, she joined the PTA and held every office. She was responsible for starting the first French Camp school carnival and honored by receiving their life membership.
When her sons started to play baseball, she became a manager, loading her car with boys and driving them to Manteca for their games. The boys needed uniforms, so she had bake sales and a raffle to purchase them. She started the French Camp little league, so more boys could play ball. She was a project leader and key leader for the French Camp 4-H Club and was active at the county level. She was den leader for the Cub Scouts and Assistant Cubmaster along with her husband. Her other organizations included the FC Grange and FC Chamber of Commerce.
She is survived by a son Raymond and Sharon Denuit and daughter Marguerite and Ralph Williams of French Camp; a sister Delores and Keith Kolbenschlag and sister-in-law Rita Anoitzbehere of Stockton; grandchildren, Kent Williams and Brock Denuit of Stockton, Michael and Scott Williams and Ryan Denuit of French Camp, Raymond Denuit of Manteca, Emile, Sara and Melissa Denuit of Lathrop and Jason Denuit of Eureka, Cal. and eleven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Raymond Denuit, son, the late Emile (Ace) Denuit, brothers, the late Frank Anoitzbehere, and Alfred Ancho, sisters, the late Alice Migliori, Irene Artozqui Robinson and Emily Anoitzbehere.
DeYoung Memorial Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements. Visitation will be Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m. at DeYoung Memorial Chapel, 601 N. California St., Stockton, Cal. 95202. Interment will be at San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery, Stockton.
Eleanor Nora Paulson
Retired
Eleanor Nora Paulson, passed away October 1, 2003 at the age of 82. Eleanor was born in Merrill, Or., October 7, 1919, to the late Jack and Anna Slivkov. She was raised in Santa Rosa and lived in Sacramento and San Jose before moving to Manteca, to be near her daughter. Her loving daughter Debra Houck and son-in-law Richard Houck of Manteca survive her. Her only grandchild, Jonathan Houck, will sadly miss her.
Eleanor was an assistant high school librarian for twenty years. After retirement she was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of traveling. She was able to visit England, Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Portugal, Egypt, Singapore, Guatemala, Yugoslavia, and her parent's homeland, Russia. Eleanor was a wonderful cook, pleasing her family with many Russian soups and treats. She was an avid reader and a lifelong learner. She loved gardening and feeding wild birds and took special care of any stray cat to come her way.
Arrangements under the direction of Santa Rosa Mortuary, 707-542-3154. Friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Monday, October 6, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Santa Rosa Memorial Park Chapel, 1900 Franklin Ave., Santa Rosa, Cal. Interment at Santa Rosa Memorial Park.

Thomas Joseph Steves
Information Systems Manager
Thomas Joseph Steves, 59, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 in Lodi. He was a native of Stockton and was born on March 3, 1944. He was a resident of Lodi for six years, previously a longtime Manteca resident.
Mr. Steves is survived by his wife Linda Steves of Lodi; children, Erika Graddy of Stockton, Tas Steves of Simi Valley, Jennifer Irwin of Lodi, and Robin Richison of Bristol, RI.; siblings, Frank Steves Jr. and Robert Steves of Manteca, Betty Pratt of Ripon, and Dorene Williams of Fallon, Nevada; three grandchildren, Christopher Graddy, Matthew Graddy and Erin Graddy of Stockton; sons-in-law, Shawn Graddy of Stockton and Dave Irwin of Lodi. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Frank and Edna Steves; his mother and father-in-law, the late George and Eleanor Boling; his brother, the late Lawrence Steves.
Thomas was a Veteran of the United States Army and served from 1962-1965. He was an information systems manager. He enjoyed his grandchildren, family and friends. He was known for his humor and wit. He was the family historian. Thomas had a passion for music and the theatre, he loved to travel, gamble and dance. He was the chairperson for the combined Manteca High Class Reunions 1954-1965.
Deegan Ripon Memorial Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements, 111 S. Palm Ave. Vigil will be Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Manteca. Funeral Service will be Friday, Dec. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church. Following cremation, burial will be at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Escalon.
