Alfred "Al" Fred Pilatus

Retired

Alfred "Al" Fred Pilatus, 80, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 at his home. He was born March 31, 1923 in Hepburn, Saskatchewan, Canada to Fred and Elisbeth (Goertzen) Pilatus. He graduated from Marshall High School in Marshall, Okla. in 1942.

He married Irma Lee Casto on Feb. 13, 1943 in Enid, Oklahoma. He served his country during World War II in the Navy Seabees from Feb. 14, 1943 to Nov. 22, 1945. His tour included the countries of France, England, Belgium and Okinawa.

He was a heavy equipment inspector at Sharpe Army Depot in Lathrop for 28 years, retiring in 1972. He was a former member of the American Legion and VFW in Manteca. He was a pastor of the Living Word Bible Church in Mesa, Arizona. He and Irma lee moved to Hays, Kansas in November 2002 and are members of the Liberty Christian Fellowship.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, David and wife Doris, and Pete and wife Kathy Hays; two daughters, Elisabeth and husband Bryon Michaelis, Manhattan, MT, and Debra Crawford, Alexandra, VA; one step-brother, Gerald Vickerman, Fairmont, MN.; nine grandchildren, Tammy and husband Scott Krier, Travis and wife Kaime Pilatus, Alexandria and husband Rob Ostrander, Marie and husband Willie Holler, Gloria Michaelis, Amber and husband Mike Wood, Gina and husband Rey Olivo, Jamie and husband John Hughes and Leanne Ruth; and thirteen great-grandchildren Derek and Kelci Krier, Flynt Heaven, Brandon Olivo, Autumn Rash, Samantha Schmierer, Brandon and Wyatt Hughes, Cassie and Callie Holler, Silus and Ember Ostrander, and Anthony Vrquiza. His infant brother Wilford Pilatus preceded him in death.

Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Liberty Christian Fellowship, 120 W. 9th, Hays; burial at St. Francis of Assisi cemetery in Munjor, Kansas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Hays Memorial Chapel. Burial with military honors by the American Legion and VFW of Hays.

Remembrances may be made to the Cancer Council of Ellis County, 114 W. 7th, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Lois D. Fernandez

Counselor

Lois D. Fernandez, 67, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton. She was a resident of Manteca since 1971. Mrs. Fernandez was a native of Washington State prior to moving to California as a small child. She was born on July 18, 1936. Lois worked in electronic industry early in her career, she then moved to serve her many great friends for a number of years at the 133 Club, (then owned by Rose Benner), until 1988. Lois then returned to college late in life to earn a degree in social work and alcohol and drug counseling. She counseled inmates at the California Youth Authority until the time she retired in the late 90's, when she began to care for foster children through the Agape Foster Agency. Lois was a great friend, mother, mentor, and counselor. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Lois is survived by her daughters, Regina Fernandez, Gayla Fernandez of Manteca, Valerie Frey-Wantland of Ripon, and Linda Reimer of Petaluma; her grandchildren, Harley Ray Van Winkle of Manteca, Alex Reimer, Laura Cheshare, and Sara Charbonnier all of Petaluma; and her great-grandson, Cole Charbonnier of Petaluma; and her prior husband whom she was married to for 25 years, Hank Fernandez of Novato. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, the late Hank Fernandez Jr.

A celebration of her life will be held at her residence on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004 at 1 p.m. at 2124 W. Yosemite Ave., Manteca, CA 95337.

Helen M. Molter

Homemaker

Helen M. Molter, 91, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at her residence in French Camp. She was born on Sept. 27, 1912 in Oregon. She lived in French Camp for 14 years and was a homemaker. She was a member of Lathrop Baptist Church for eight years.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Sharon Hancock of French Camp, her son-in-law James W. Hancock; grandchildren, Theresa Knox, Harry Lee Hancock, and Carolyn Rodgers; great-grandchildren, Matthew Knox, Vanessa Knox, Katelyn Rodgers, Jaclyn Rodgers and James Rodgers.

Park View Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements, 3661 E. French Camp Rd. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Lathrop Baptist Church, 870 J Street, Lathrop. Funeral Service will be Friday, Feb. 13, at Park View Cemetery.

Marjorie Smith

Former County Clerk

Marjorie Smith, 79, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 in Queen City, Texas. Ms. Smith was born on Dec. 25, 1924 in Nome, Alaska. She was the former County Clerk in Stockton for many years.

Survivors include three sons; two daughters; one brother; two sisters; and a number of grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Richard Goins

Richard "Dick" Fat Boy Goins, 79, of Vinita died Monday, Jan. 26 at his residence in Oklahoma.

He was a maintenance supervisor at Norris Industries, an ammunition plant in California for many years, until his retirement. He trained cutting horses with the help of his four buffalo. He raised miniature horses and mules. He was a native of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Dale Peace Post #40.

He is survived by his children, Patty Glenn of Buena Park, Sandy Goins of Clovis, Debby Bellingham of San Francisco and Gary Douglas of Arlington, Tex.; brother, W.D. Goins of New Mexico; sisters, Nancy Shadbolt of Welch, Betty Abbott of Riverside, Mary Deaton and Sue Treece, both of Santa Rosa; 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys E. Goins, his parents and two brothers.

Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel.

Mildred Wallace

Mildred Myrtle Wallace, 85, of Oakdale died Thursday, Jan. 29 at her home.

A native of Canada, she lived in Oakdale for 30 years. She worked at Servamation for 10 years.

She is survived by her children, Keith Wallace of Modesto and Maureen Gregory of Oakdale; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Leonard Boyer

Leonard L. Boyer, 63, of Modesto died Sunday, Jan. 25 at Memorial Medical Center.

A native of California, he lived in Modesto for 50 years. He was a purchasing agent for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Boyer of Modesto; daughter, Diana Fairbanks of Oakdale; sister, Esther Mae Wendland of Escalon; brother, Lloyd Billings of Oregon; and two grandchildren.

Memorial service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at Oakdale Memorial Chapel.

Virginia Martin

Virginia Agnes Correia Martin, 85, of Oakdale died Saturday, Jan. 31 at her home.

A native of Warm Springs, Ca., she lived in Oakdale for 31 years. She was a line worker at Patterson Frozen Foods for eight years. She belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Grannies Iris Club, she was a former member of the Mountain View 4-H as a community leader and cooking leader. She previously lived in Patterson for 21 years and Turlock for 20 years.

She is survived by her husband, Rico Martin of Oakdale; children, Gene Martin of Modesto, Beverly Relvas of Modesto and Velma Mendonca of Ceres; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Adeline Silva, Helen Serpa and Katy Santos; brothers, Tony Correia and Ed Correia.

A rosary will be said Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at Oakdale Memorial Chapel. Mass will be said Thursday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 4 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Oakdale Memorial Chapel.

Barbara Grassell

Barbara Estelle Quinley Grassell, 81, of Davenport, Wash. died Saturday, Jan. 10.

A native of Modesto, she lived in Oakdale prior to moving to Davenport one year ago. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her children, Renee Grassell of California and Cay Payne of Washington; sister, Bev Schoenwetter of Oakdale; brother, Win Quinley of Turlock; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Milt Grassell.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. at Oakdale Memorial Chapel. Private burial at Harmony Grove Cemetery, Lockeford.

Cyrus Wade

Cyrus Ralph Wade, 57, died Monday, Jan. 12 at his home.

He was a native of Bakersfield. He graduated from East High where he became an Eagle Scout soon before graduating. After high school, he furthered his education first at Bakersfield College and then received his bachelors degree in Business Administration from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. He worked in the banking industry in various parts of the Central Valley and adjacent areas. He was employed at El Capitan Bank for 10 years as a Senior Loan Officer in the late 1980s. At the time of his death, he was employed as a financial analyst for Ford Motor Credit in Pleasanton. He was also an avid hunter, fisherman and sportsman.

He is survived by his parents, Cyrus and Virginia Wade; son, Karl Wade; daughter and son-in-law, Tieada Wade and Randy Hughes; brother, Alan Wade, Alan's wife Cindy; four grandchildren, Brecca, Brooklynn, Brynna, and Bridget, all of Bakersfield; nephews, Patrick, Adam, Matthew, and niece Mackenzie, also of Bakersfield.

A private memorial service was held at 1st Presbyterian Chapel, January 22 in Bakersfield.

C.P. Daly

C.P. Daly, 79, of Oakdale died Saturday, Jan. 31 at Oak Valley Hospital.

A native of Massachusetts, he lived in Oakdale for eight years. He was a construction contractor for 60 years. He served in the U.S. Army Corp. during WWII. He was past master and member of Masonic Lodge #8, Tuolumne.

He is survived by his five children, Barry, Carroll, Warren, John and Shawn; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at Oakdale Memorial Chapel. Private burial at Masonic Cemetery, Sonora. No visitation.
