Michael E. Ballard
A memorial service was held Tuesday for Michael Earl Ballard, 47, of Ceres. He died Friday, April 14, 2006 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Born Feb. 11, 1959, Mr. Ballard was a native of Fresno and lived in Ceres for 10 years. He enjoyed playing pool.
He leaves behind two brothers, Dale Ballard of San Diego and Coy Ballard of Susanville; and his sister, Joann Tugman of Ceres. He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Plitsch; and one brother.
Peggy L. Baxter
A graveside service was held Wednesday at Lakewood Memorial Park for Peggy Lynn Dow Baxter, 49, of Ceres. She died April 4, 2006 at Memorial Medical Center.
Born Oct. 5, 1956, Mrs. Baxter was a native of Hughson and lived in Ceres for 40 years. She was a cashier and worked in retail. Mrs. Baxter enjoyed baking, and arts and crafts.
She leaves behind seven children, Steven Baxter Jr., Leroy Baxter and Steven Baxter, all of Modesto, and Harley Baxter, Kris Baxter, Kiah Baxter and Chyenne Baxter, all of Ceres; her brother, Barton Dow; her sister, Carolyn Kreger; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steven Baxter Sr.
Lavina M. Bender
Burial was Friday at Turlock Memorial Park for Lavina Mae Bender, 76, of Turlock. She died Sunday, April 9, 2006 at her home.
Turlock Memorial Park & Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Born Feb. 7, 1930, Mrs. Bender was a native of Danville, Pa., and had lived in Turlock since 1962. She was a nurses aide at the former Memorial South Hospital, Ceres, for 15 years.
Mrs. Bender leaves behind three children, Jane Stout and Cheryl Lester, both of Turlock, and Vicki Martin of Auburn; and four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Samuel Bender.

Hazel J. Bergquist
A funeral was held Monday at Calvary Lutheran for Hazel Jeanette Hanson Bergquist, 86, of Modesto. She died Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at her home.
Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.
Born July 8, 1919, Mrs. Bergquist was a native of Kiester, Minn., and had lived in Modesto since 1956. She previously lived in Patterson from 1952-56. Mrs. Bergquist was a registered nurse for 45 years and worked for Del Puerto Hospital in Patterson, Modesto City Hospital, Memorial Hospital of Ceres and Scenic General Hospital. She was a charter member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Mrs. Bergquist was a graduate of Mercy Hospital of Nursing in Mason City, Iowa. She enjoyed reading.
Mrs. Bergquist leaves behind her husband, John Bergquist of Modesto; two children, Allen Moser of Sacramento and Gary Bergquist of Modesto; her brother, the Rev. Dr. Gordon Hanson of Gold River; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a sister.

Harry H. Burdick
Eaton Family Funeral & Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements for former Ceres resident Harry H. Burdick, 79. The Livermore resident died Saturday, April 15, 2006 at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Livermore.
Burial is pending at San Joaquin Valley National cemetery in Santa Nella.
Born Sept. 15, 1926, Mr. Burdick was a native of Rockford, Ill., and lived in Livermore for two years. He previously lived in Ceres for 10 years. Mr. Burdick was a truck driver for 50 years. He enjoyed playing poker, cribbage and baseball. Mr. Burdick was an Army veteran of World War II.
He leaves behind his son, Melvin “J.R.” Denney of Hornitas; and one grandchild.
Junice J. Canela
A funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at Allen Mortuary for Junice Jesus Canela, 1, of Ceres. She died Thursday, April 13, 2006 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
Burial was at Turlock Memorial Park.
Born March 28, 2005, Junice was a native of San Francisco and lived in Ceres for one year.
He leaves behind his parents, Jocelyn Nunez and Jesus Canela, both of Ceres; his brother, Jadan Canela of Ceres; and his grandparents, Roselia Nunez of Keyes, and Baltazar and Marina Canela of Turlock.
Lerwyne D. Kirk
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church for Lerwyne “Leon” Dale Kirk, 84, of Ceres. He died Saturday, April 15, 2006 at Evergreen Rehabilitation Care Center.
Burial will be at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of Eaton Family Funeral & Cremation Service.
Born Feb. 24, 1922, Mr. Kirk was a native of Killeen, Texas, and lived in Ceres for 63 years. He was service manager for Alfred Mathews for 20 years. Mr. Kirk was a member of First Baptist Church in Modesto, and he enjoyed hunting and working on cars.
He leaves behind his wife, Reba D. Kirk of Ceres; two sons, Randy Kirk of Turlock and Ron Kirk of Modesto; his sister, Joan Kling of Texas; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jan Stapp.

Steve E. McClure
Eaton Family Funeral & Cremation Service was in charge of private services for Steve E. McClure, 52, of Modesto. He died Friday, April 14, 2006 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House at Samaritan Village in Hughson.
Born April 18, 1953, Mr. McClure was a native of Arkansas and lived in Modesto for 30 years. He was a farmer for 15 years and enjoyed fishing.
Mr. McClure leaves behind his wife, Barbara McClure of Modesto; his daughter, JoAnna McClure of Modesto; her brother, John R. McClure of Ceres; three sisters, Glenda McClure and Shonnia Cobb, both of Ceres, and Nicole Garcia of Turlock; and one grandchild.
