Gordon D. Olson

A graveside service was held Saturday at Turlock Memorial Park for Gordon D. Olson, 88, of Turlock. He died Monday, April 10, 2006 at Covenant Village Care Center.

A memorial service was also held Saturday at Turlock Covenant Church. Allen Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Born April 6, 1918, Mr. Olson was a native of Hughson and lived in Turlock for 57 years. He was a pharmacist and owned and operated Olson's Pharmacy for 40 years. Mr. Olson was a member of Turlock Covenant Church, Exchange Club, University of California Alumni Association, Marines Memorial Club, a life member of the California Pharmacist Association and past president of Turlock Chamber of Commerce. He was involved with the California State University, Stanislaus, foreign exchange student program and basketball Boosters Club. Mr. Olson enjoyed Cal football. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He leaves behind his son, Donald Olson of Pleasant Hill, Ore.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hildur Olson; son, Richard Olson; and a brother and a sister.

Remembrances may be sent to Turlock Covenant Church, P.O. Box 3119, Turlock, CA 95381; or to the Covenant Village Benevolent Fund, 2125 N. Olive Ave., Turlock, CA 95382.

Tiberio F. Silveira

A Mass was held Tuesday at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, in Turlock for Tiberio Faustino Silveira, 72, of Hughson. He died Saturday, April 8, 2006 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Burial was at Turlock Memorial Park under the direction of Whitehurst, Norton & Dias Funeral Chapel in Turlock.

Born Aug. 9, 1933, Mr. Silveira was a native of Ribeira Seca, São Jorge, the Azores, and had lived in Hilmar and Hughson for 40 years. He was a maintenance man for Sears for seven years and also milked cows for Foster Farms in Hickman for 19 years. Mr. Silveira was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time at Casa of the Azores, Hilmar, bullfights, traveling to the Azores and barbecuing.

He leaves behind his wife, Isabel F. Silveira of Hughson; five children, Joe Faustino Silveira and Isabel Silveira Pierce, both of Turlock, Phyllis Fatima Camboia of Hughson, Mary Fatima Doman of Park City, Utah, and Laurette Georgina Eslinger of Herriman, Utah; two brothers, João Faustino Silveira of Calheta, São Jorge, and Ernest Faustino Silveira of San Jose; his sister, Maria Fatima Silveira Sousa of Lowell, Mass.; and 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Eleanor G. Sowell

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Lakewood Memorial Park for Eleanor G. Phillips Sowell, 91, of Modesto. She died Friday, April 14, 2006 at her home.

A memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Hughson.

The Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs in charge of arrangements.

Born Sept. 19, 1914, Mrs. Sowell was a native of San Luis Obispo, and lived in Modesto for 25 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Sowell was a former member of Del Rio Country Club and First Baptist Church in Hughson. Mrs. Sowell was involved in community singing groups.

She leaves behind three children, Oran Sowell and Ann Weaver, both of Modesto, and Saundra Grube of Martinez; two brothers, Carl Phillips and Harvey Phillips; and nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Preston Sowell; two brothers; and one sister.

Remembrances may be sent to Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 1600 Carver Road, Modesto, CA 95350; or First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 296, Hughson, CA 95326.

Robert L. Sullivan Jr.

A funeral was held Friday at Lakewood Funeral Home Chapel for Robert L. Sullivan Jr., 72, of Modesto. He died Monday, April 10, 2006 at his home.

Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born Oct. 8, 1933, Mr. Sullivan was a native of Kansas City, Kan., and lived in Modesto for 35 years. He was a retired clerk with Safeway. Mr. Sullivan was an Army veteran, and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Ceres, and enjoyed fishing, gardening and orchids.

He leaves behind his wife, Sue Sullivan of Modesto; three children, Michael A. Sullivan and Darrin E. Sullivan, both of Modesto, and Scott O. Sullivan of Hughson; two sisters, Helen M. Graham of Oregon and Della M. Cavanaugh of Colorado; and 10 grandchildren.

Gary Wilson Brophy

Retired East Union High principal

Gary Wilson Brophy, 72, passed away on Thursday, April 20.

Gary was born in Yuba City on April 3, 1934.

He was a Manteca resident for 35 years. Gary and his wife Jacqueline Boyd Brophy had been married 50 years.

Gary is survived by his wife Jacqueline Brophy of Manteca; children, Dennis Brophy of Oregon and Sara Alexander of Manteca; and grandchildren, Stephanie Alexander of Manteca, Michael Alexander of Manteca, and Jennifer Alexander of Arizona.

Gary spent the first 16 years of his life attending schools in the Gridley-Biggs area. He eventually moved to Marysville and graduated high school. He then attended Yuba College and Chico State where he played basketball and was a collegiate boxer. His teaching began in Live Oak, California in 1956. In 1965 he transferred to schools in the Fairfield/Travis AFB area where he taught mathematics and became an administrator. In 1971 he was hired as the principal of Manteca High School, a job he held for a full six weeks. After a short stint at the district office, he was selected to be the third principal at East Union High School. His final educational experience was at Hughson High School as superintendent. In 1980, Gary decided to leave education and enter the fascinating world of property management. By 1994 Gary was ready for a “career change.” Retirement and world travel beckoned. He and Jacque devoted the next 12 years to motorhoming around their wonderful country, making friends wherever they went.

Gary’s spirit and zest for life will always be remembered by all who knew him. He was a devoted father, grandfather and husband. He was known for extending a helping hand to many people in our community. His jokes, hijinxs and sense of fun will be greatly missed.

Celebration Vigil Service will be held on Tuesday April 25, 2006 at 7 p.m. at P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home 290 N. Union Road. Manteca, Ca

A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday April 26th, 2006 at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church 525 E. North St. Manteca, Ca

Interment will be Private

George Calvin Harris

Retired

George Calvin Harris, 94, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at Manteca Care & Rehab Center. He was a native of MD, born on November 19, 1911. He lived in Manteca for five years and Modesto for 10 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Mazie Harris in 2001.

George was an aeronautical engineer with Martin-Marietta Aircraft for 30 years, and Rohr Aircraft for several years. He and his wife owned and operated a Travel Lodge Hotel in Imperial Beach for five years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Mr. Harris is survived by his son George W. Harris of Manteca; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Lakewood Memorial Park is in charge of funeral arrangements. Funeral Service will be private.

Bertha E. (Rushing) Romero

Manteca Pioneer

Bertha E. (Rushing) Romero, 93, passed quietly away at her home on Wednesday, April 19, 2006, her 76th wedding anniversary. Bertha was born on October 1, 1912 in Bakersfield. Bertha known as “Bert” was a pioneer of the city of Manteca.

She graduated from Calla Grammar School and then Manteca High School in 1929. After attending Humphrey’s Business School, Bert became a stenographer for Redwood Lumber Company in Westwood, Cal.

Before moving back to Manteca, Bert was married on April 19, 1930 to Clarence Romero, eventually settling down on one of the family’s ranches in Manteca where she happily lived the rest of her life.

Bert was best known for her sharp wit, graciousness, service and ability to laugh about life. She is remembered by her community for her active participation with the Manteca Women’s Service Club, the Calla Mother’s Association, the Manteca Rebekah Lodge No. 332 (IOOF), the Farm Bureau, the Girl Scouts, the Manteca Historical Society and Grand Jury selection in 1973.

Along with her community service, Bert assisted her husband with the family Pontiac dealership, Romero Motors, until its closure in 1971 after being in business for almost three decades.

Bert enjoyed spending time at the family’s property in Tuolumne County above Sonora, both as a young child and in her later years.

Bert leaves behind one son, Don Romero of Manteca; three daughters, Bernita Edwards and Roberta Marie Campbell of Manteca and Rebecca Gayle Buckalew of Yucaipa, Cal. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Clarence Romero, and two grandchildren, the late Charles Christian and Robert Michael Campbell.

Deegan Funeral Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Remembrances may be made to the Manteca Historical Society or to a charity of your choice.
