JoAnne Swenson Martin
November 29, 1932 - August 7, 2019
Born in Salinas, California
Resided in Salinas, California
On August 7th, 2019 our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Cousin, Aunt and Friend left this life surrounded by her children and is now in the loving arms of our Savior.
JoAnne Swenson Martin was born November 29, 1932. A lifetime resident of Salinas, she attended Salinas High School and Hartnell College. She married Charles Alsberge in 1952 and together had 6 children. She later married Eugene “Marty” Martin in 1973 and embraced 3 stepchildren.
Professionally, she co-founded Coast Carpet Installation Service where she managed scheduling with several flooring retailers across the Central Coast. Later, she enjoyed a long career as a medical receptionist working for her dear friend, Dr. Thomas O’Neil. She loved sharing her medical knowledge with anyone, which earned her the loving moniker Dr. JoAnne by her family.
JoAnne instilled many necessary values to her family. Following her example, they carry on her humility, resiliency, kindness and most of all a high level of integrity. She was a gifted storyteller, much like her father, and had an amazing ability to brighten anyone’s day by telling a story without maligning anyone. Her keen sense of humor and endearing magnetism will be in the memory of anyone who knew her. She and Marty enjoyed time camping on their property in Klamath Falls, Oregon, vacationing in Hawaii, Lake Tahoe/Reno, and Branson and especially looked forward to their annual New Year’s trip to Morro Bay.
While she was a legendary procrastinator, her sharp wit always pointed out that any problem would usually take care of itself by simply waiting it out. She was a proud daily grocery shopper and great cook, and had no issue serving dinners at 8 pm. Despite this, her family always gathered for dinner and sat around the table to discuss each day’s events. Family time was one of her biggest priorities. There is no doubt this was passed on from her mother and father who hosted every family holiday celebration, weddings and countless other gatherings at the Swenson Cabin in Arroyo Seco.
Also imparted by her parents, JoAnne had a lifelong love for animals including her beloved horse, Flash. Having passed this passion on to her daughters she often ended up adopting stray cats and dogs.
JoAnne was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Eugene “Marty” Martin, her son Walter Alsberge, her parents Walter and Bessie Swenson and sister Yvonne Alarid,
She is survived by daughters, Linda (Kevin) White of Aptos, Judy (David) Berry of Thousand Oaks, Lisa (Mark) McShane of Hollister, Carole Cook of Salinas and son, Jeff (Toni) Alsberge of Monterey. Her stepchildren include Mike (Susan) Martin, Debbie (Gerry) Giandominico and Cathy Campbell all of Sacramento. JoAnne had 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Celebration of Life will be held 1:00p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Sainas, CA. 93901.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation, SPCA of Monterey County or your favorite charity.

On Saturday July 27, 2019, our dear mother Camille Echeveria, lovingly known as “Mickey, ” departed this life surrounded by family.
Born on May 28, 1930 to William and Camille Church, Camille lived her entire life in Salinas, CA where she created cherished memories like visiting Lover’s Point Beach with her family. She attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Salinas High School at age 16. Camille began her career at City Hall, worked at the Courthouse thereafter, and then for the Salinas Police Department for 19 years. In 1949, she married James Echeveria. Together they had ten children (and later, fourteen grandchildren) all of whom agree “she was the very best”. Her years as a mother and grandmother were filled with boundless love and acts of service. Camille was an avid gardener, a faithful fan of the 49ers, SF Giants, Warriors and Tiger Woods, and was truly generous to all she knew.

Mary Fergusson Bakan Lugg
January 29, 1962 - July 28, 2019
Born in Lakewood, California
Resided in Carmel, California
Mary Fergusson Bakan Lugg, a 4th generation resident of Carmel, California, passed away unexpectedly on July 28, 2019. Mary is survived by her husband Ken Lugg; her beloved son Anthony Bakan (Lisa Rinker); grandson Adam; sister Janet Leighton; nephews; Nick, Matt and Bruce and countless family and friends. Mary was preceded in passing by her parents, Carroll and Bruce.
Mary was born January 29, 1962. She attended Santa Catalina High School and treasured her sisterhood of friends that lasted her lifetime. She attended University of Portland and graduated from Heald College San Francisco in 1982. She worked at NCGA and LanguageLine but her most coveted occupation was being a full-time grandmother for her grandson, Adam. Her face would light up when she spoke about him and their day.
Family was Mary’s greatest source of joy. She loved being a mother, grandmother, auntie and wife. In 1990 Mary welcomed her pride and joy Anthony into the world. Nana and Papa were a big part of their lives. She found love with her husband Ken, and they married in 2016. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She loved taking her dog, Barney, for walks on the beach. She was a fantastic cook; we all especially loved her monkey bread on Christmas morning. Anyone who knew Mary appreciated her quick wit, sense of humor and storytelling abilities-traits that she shared with her father. The twinkle in her eye and sound of her laughter will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her.
There will be a private burial where Mary will be placed to rest next to her mother and father at San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey.
A Celebration of Life will be held August 11, 2019 at 1:00 at the Del Mesa Clubhouse.
If you would like to donate in Mary’s memory, the family asks that you choose your favorite charity, Breast Cancer Awareness or Santa Catalina School.
