George Dahl, Yolo Assessor

He was said to be great on the job but bad with dogs.

George Dahl, an appraiser in the Yolo County Assessor's Office known for the painstaking way he approached his work, died Friday at age 80.

His wife, Evelyn, said Mr. Dahl died of complications of cancer.

Mr. Dahl, who worked in the Assessor's Office from 1958 until his retirement in 1983, "was one of the most conscientious people you would ever want to meet," said Alan Flory, a former county assessor.

Among other things, Mr. Dahl was known for "sniffing out" recently constructed structures, getting them quickly appraised and on the tax rolls, according to a resolution adopted by the county Board of Supervisors when he retired.

"You would give him a project, and he wouldn't stop until it was perfect, no matter how long it took," Flory said. "George knew where everything was. In the rural areas, he would find things. And he was very good dealing with people."

But the same couldn't be said about his dealings with dogs, the supervisors' resolution noted, tongue-in-cheek: "His injury claims indicate he has lost more footraces with dogs ... than any other appraiser in this office."

He was bitten numerous times while appraising properties for the county, his wife recalled, but only two of the bites were serious.

A Davis dog took a healthy bite out of his buttocks, destroying his slacks, she said, while another, a Weimaraner named Genevieve in Woodland, got him in the leg.

"That woman had more than one dog, and when George later showed her the teeth marks on his leg, she said, 'Oh, that must have been Genevieve,' " his wife recalled with a laugh.

And the couple who owned the dog that bit him in the buttocks? "They bought him a new pair of slacks," she said.

George Louis Dahl was born Jan. 19, 1921, in Woodland, the eldest of three children of the former Clara Ulrich and George Dahl.

After graduating from Woodland High School in 1940, he tried several times to join the military, but was rejected for health reasons, his wife said.

So instead of military service, Mr. Dahl spent World War II as a civilian parachute packer at what was then McClellan Field on the outskirts of Sacramento.

After the war, he worked for eight years on the old Ulrich ranch, northwest of Woodland, that was owned by his maternal grandparents. He also leased property nearby, where he raised tomatoes.

He married Evelyn Weekes on Feb. 28, 1948. They met in Woodland, where she worked in an insurance office.

Mr. Dahl joined the Assessor's Office in 1953, and quickly found his niche, his wife recalled. "He liked his work, he really did. He liked being outdoors, and he liked going out in the county sniffing out all the new buildings that hadn't been put on the tax rolls. He enjoyed himself."

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Dahl of Woodland; daughters, Lurae Bailey and Marlise Dahl, both of Woodland; sister, June Jahn of Woodland; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
