Evelyn Marie Bergman Melavic

Evelyn Marie Bergman Melavic died at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center on Nov. 28, 2003.

A lifelong Salida resident, she was preceded in death by her parents, Emanuel and Ruth Bergman; brothers, Manuel and Thomas Bergman and sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Harold MacKeen.

She is survived by her husband, Frank; daughter, Sherry and husband, Burrell Welton, Rifle; daughter, Wendy and husband, Kent Edwards, Grand Junction; granddaughters, Erin and Lisa Welton, Chandler, Ariz.; grandsons, Branden and Craton Edwards, Grand Junction; sisters-in-law, Marge Bergman, Pueblo and Ruth Bergman, Buena Vista and several nieces and nephews.

After graduating from Salida High School and working as a telegraph operator for Western Union, she married Frank Melavic May 3, 1947.

She worked for Colorado Mountain College and B&B Printers.

Mrs. Melavic was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the United Methodist Church.

She was an avid community volunteer, having served as Mother Advisor for Rainbow Girls, 4-H leader, and dedicated more than 8,000 hours as a hospital auxiliary member, an association she enjoyed until the time of her death.

She also spent time reading with Longfellow Elementary School students.

Services, under the care of Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home, will be at 1 p.m. today at United Methodist Church, Fourth and D streets, with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the HRRMC auxiliary.

Evelyn Marie Bergman Melavic

Funeral services for Evelyn Marie Bergman Melavic were held at 1 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church. Rev. Christine Richardson officiated.

A couple of poems Mrs. Melavic wrote were read.

Musical selections were “Old Rugged Cross,” “Hymn of Promise,” “September Song,” “How Great Thou Art,” “Lara’s Theme” and “Amazing Grace.”

The organist was Georgianna Smith and soloists were Cathryn Bishop Campbell and Branden Edwards.

Pallbearers were Kent Edwards, Branden Edwards, Craton Edwards, Burrell Welton, Preston Kaess and James Preston.

Honorary pallbearers were Bud Becker, Tony Gentile, Hap Knickerbocker, Paul Koons, Stuart Nadler and Paul Nelson.

Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.

Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

E. Lucille Ireland

E. Lucille Ireland, 89, died Dec. 2, 2003, in Cañon City.

She was born Feb. 2, 1914, in Corydon, Iowa, a daughter of the late David Albert and Jennie Pearl (Wells) McCullough.

Mrs. Ireland moved to Colorado with her family in 1926.

She married Walter O. Ireland Sept. 14, 1932. He preceded her in death in 1979.

They were ranchers in Western Fremont County and created the Acres of Ireland subdivision in Howard.

Mrs. Ireland worked at the Salida Livestock Commission Co. before retiring in 1986 and moving to Cañon City.

She was past president of the Fremont County Cowbelles, past chairman of the Howard-Cotopaxi Christian Women’s Club and was Sunday school secretary at the Howard Community Church for several years.

Mrs. Ireland is survived by her sons, Darrel (Cheryl) W. Ireland, Colorado Springs and Gene L. Ireland, Howard; sister, Mable Hamilton, Cañon City; brother, Dale McCullough; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Holt Family Funeral Home in Cañon City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Community Church of Howard with Pastor Randy Samuels officiating. Interment will follow at the Howard Cemetery.

Antonius ‘Tony’ Mayer

Antonius “Tony” Mayer, 58, Nathrop, died Sept. 19, 2003.
He was born in February 1945.
Mr. Mayer was a well-known mason and tradesman in the Upper Arkansas River Valley. His work was noted for its functionality, durability and craftsmanship.
He loved the canyon lands and deserts of the American Southwest. He was frequently seen driving his Unimog through town on his way to trips along the back roads of Bighorn Canyon.
Friends admired him for his hard work, skill and sense of humor.
Mr. Mayer is survived by his son and two daughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jack Cook’s house, 15365 Ballew Road, Buena Vista.

Patricia Louise ‘Patty’ Strain DeAguero

Patricia Louise “Patty” Strain DeAguero, 58, died at her home in Saguache.
Born March 24, 1945, in Alamosa, she is the daughter of Charles Bob and Daisy Strain.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father and sister, Ramona Steeleman.
She is survived by a son, Terry (Debbie) Strain and daughter, Cindy Archuleta, both of Saguache; grandchildren, Lee, Josh, Crystal, Dominiqueca, Desirae and Terri, all of Saguache; Tisha and Layo Martinez, both of Salida; great-grandchildren Samantha Leewaye and Damien Martinez, both of Salida; sister, Millie Glover, Delores; brothers, Curtis (Becky) Strain, Delta and Ronnie (Debbie) Strain, Denver; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pitkin Avenue Baptist Church, 610 Pitkin Ave., Saguache.
Funeral arrangements are with Romero Funeral Home. Cremation has been chosen.

Shannon Lynn Rogers

Shannon Lynn Rogers, 33, Buena Vista, died Oct. 2, 2003, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 18, 1970, in Burley, Idaho, to Larry and Cheri (Mabey) Gentry.
She was employed as a baker at Lobacks Bakery in Buena Vista.
Her interests included the mountains, gardening, cats and anything having to do with the outdoors. She especially loved her son, John.
She is survived by her son, John Rogers, Buena Vista; mother, Cheri Gentry, Buena Vista; grandparents, Ed and Lynn Mabey, Iola, Kan.; uncles, Terry (Kay) Mabey, Moses Lake, Wash. and Tim (Marcia) Mabey, Buena Vista; cousins, Tim (fiancé, Amanda Jensen) Mabey, Samantha Mabey and Crissa Mabey, all of Buena Vista and by special friends, Theresa Saucke and Bobbi DeBuano, both of Salida.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the John Rogers School Fund at High Country Bank, P.O. Box 309 Salida, CO 81201.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Robert Alton Alway

Robert Alton Alway, formerly of Salida, died at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., Sept. 20, 2003.
He was born in Cheyenne, Wyo., June 14, 1919, to Thomas and Dora Alway.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
Mr. Alway moved from Salida to Citrus Heights in 1947. He worked as a car inspector for Pacific Fruit Express until his retirement.
A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles, and a charter member of the Citrus Heights Sportsman Club, he was known among family and friends for his love of gardening, especially his giant tomatoes and roses, and his avid interest in trains.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas E. Alway and Dora Alway; brothers, Lester E. Alway, Jack Alway, Richard Alway and Delbert Alway; sisters, Lois Campbell, Dorothy Noble and Bernice Thompkins.
Mr. Alway is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ella (Jackson) Alway, Citrus Heights, Calif.; children, Gary Alway and his wife, Betty, Sandra Alway and Gwenn Nygren and her husband, Ron; grandchildren, Ella Dent, Kelly McAnelly, Leane LeMaster, Mario Alway, Aaron Nygren and Rebecca Walker; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Catherine Field, Jamestown, Calif.; sister-in-law, Alice Alway, Moffat and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Graveside services, with military honors, were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 24 at Sylvan District Cemetery, Citrus Heights, Calif.

Geraldine F. Cosslett

Geraldine F. Cosslett died Oct. 1, 2003, in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
She was born Nov. 27, 1905, in Pueblo.
She married Walter L. Cosslett March 27, 1926, in Pueblo. They moved to Salida in 1950.
Mrs. Cosslett was preceded in death by her husband in 1965 and one great-grandchild in 2001.
She is survived by children, Margaret Drake, Dorothy Hobbs, Barbara Fischer, Betty Cosslett and Walter Cosslett Jr.; 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Cosslett will be buried next to her husband in private graveside rites at Fairview Cemetery.

Ronald David ‘Duke’ Silva

Ronald David “Duke” Silva died Oct. 4, 2003, in Denver.
He was born Aug. 16, 1937, in Salida.
Mr. Silva was preceded in death by his father, Roney Silva, Salida.
Survivors include his mother, Beatrice Silva, Denver; five children, two brothers, two sisters and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fort Logan Cemetery, Denver.
Following the service a gathering for family and friends will be held at 4747 W. Colfax Ave., Denver.
