Rogers, Jr., Allen W

Allen W. Rogers, Jr., age 79, of Laurel, Delaware passed away on February 28, 2010 at Nanticoke Hospital in Seaford.

He was born in Sycamore, DE a son of the late Allen Rogers, Sr. and Elsie Cooper Rogers.

Allen retired from the E.I. DuPont Company in Seaford as a supervisor with 34 years of service. In retirement he enjoyed working in his garden and carpentry.

Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife of 52 years Peggy Jones Rogers. His children: Danny Rogers and his wife Beverly of Mt. Joy, PA, Jim Rogers and companion Glenda of Dillsburg, PA, Melinda R. Tingle and husband Kevin of Laurel, Brent Rogers and wife Lisa of Camden, DE, Janet Rogers and companion Chris of Phoenix, AZ., Carla Layton and husband Bill of Laurel and Kerry Rogers and companion Betsy of Terreltaute, IN.

Grandchildren, Erin Tingle, Alison Tingle, Brittany Rogers, David Rogers, Jill DeFelice, Jennifer Gallagher, Melissa Weimer, Amy Smith, Lucas Rogers and Kerry Rogers. A brother, Bill Rogers and wife Jody of Bangor, ME.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home 700 West Street Laurel, DE 19956 on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 10:30 am. A visitation will also be held on Wednesday evening at the funeral home from 6- 8:00 pm. The Rev. Art Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in Bethel Community Cemetery Bethel, DE.

Hearn, Gale Allen

Gale Allen Hearn, age 60, of Laurel, Delaware passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on May 21, 2010.

He was born in Seaford, De a son of the late Howard and Mabel Hearn. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Linda Hearn, a son Michael Hearn and brother Brooks Hearn.

Gale was a master carpenter and loved by many. He is survived by his children, Melinda, Gail, Tina, Kim, Phillip, Matthew and Dale. His grandchildren, Josh, Jeffery, Tyler, Devin, Shawn, Taylor, Tesa, McKenzie, Colin, Amber, Jamie, Wyatt, Chris, Dustin, Brian and Tyana. His brothers, Arnold Hearn, Wayne Hearn and a sister Juanita Cahall.

A Service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Rd. 472 Laurel, De 19956 on Wendesday at 1:00 pm, interment will follow in Trintity Church Cemetery. The Rev. Julie Lewis will officiate.

Johnson, June Marie

June Marie Johnson, age 70, of Laurel, Delaware passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on June 19, 2010.

June was born in Bing Hampton, New York a daughter of the late Burton Freeman Castlebury and Juanita Stone Castlebury.

She spent her entire life as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. A member of Christ Evangelistic Church in Laurel. June will always be remembered for her kind and loving spirit, and love for the beach. Her home was always open to her family and friends. You could always count on her to extend a helping hand. June was a talented seamstress making many pageant gowns, wedding gowns and costumes. She was blessed with an eye for decorating and designing the most amazing floral arrangements. She will truly be missed by all!

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her sons, Frances "Lee" Johnson and finance Ashley Hudson of Laurel. Her daughters, Flo Huffman and husband Ed of Laurel, Linda Johnson of Seaford, Debbie Carmean and her friend Sherwood Sampson of Seaford. Mary Ellen Cecil and husband James of Seaford and Dawn Johnson of Florida. A brother, Phillip Castlebury of Laurel and sisters Judith Tyder of Maryland and Jeannea Castlebury of Laurel. A grandson Roland Ferrell, and 17 additional grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren also survive her along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Howard L. Johnson, Sr. in 2006. A son Howard L. Johnson, Jr., a deceased granddaughter and two great grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home 700 West Street Laurel, DE 19956 on Friday June 25, 2010 at 2:00 pm, where a viewing will also be held from 12:30 to 2:00 pm. The Rev. Roland Tice and Pastor Larry Lewis will officiate. Interment will follow in Portsville Untied Methodist Church Cemetery.

Contributions can be made in June Johnson's memory to the American Cancer Society 1138 Parsons Road Salisbury, MD 21803.

Alberta B. Morris, 82

Smyrna - Alberta B. Morris, of Smyrna, passed away Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Capital Health Care in Dover, Delaware. She was 82. Alberta was born on June 14, 1928 in Milford to Walter D. and Bessie E. Betts.

Upon graduation from cosmetology school she owned and operated her own beauty shop in Clayton, Delaware for several years. Alberta also worked at Diamond Ice and Coal Company, Suburban Propane, and Scott Nursing Home. In her later years she worked for the Town of Smyrna as a Crossing Guard at the corner of School Lane and Commerce Street.

She was very active as a volunteer and with her political party. She served as the president of the Citizens Hose Co. No. 1 Ladies Auxiliary for over 20 years. She was also a Past President of the Kent County Ladies Auxiliary, Past President of the Delmarva Ladies Auxiliary, and a President Emeritus of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Delmarva Volunteer Firefighter's Association. She served on numerous committees throughout the region. In addition, she was an honorary member of Bowers Fire Company, Dover Fire Company, and served as "mom" to many of the recruit classes of the Wilmington Fire Department during their time at the Delaware State Fire School. Since Dover Fire Company had no organized auxiliary, she was often called upon to assist the Dover Volunteer Fire Company by preparing and serving food and beverages during emergency responses. Her volunteer efforts lead Dover Fire Company to recognize her for her time and commitment by naming her the honorary President of the Dover Fire Company Auxiliary.

Alberta was known around Smyrna and Dover as the person to call when you needed something done. Before her illness, she was active in many organizations, clubs, and committees in the Kent County area including the Governor's Council on State Social Service Centers, and the U.S. Postal Service Customer Advisory Board. She was awarded the U.S. Postal Service Volunteer of the Year award for her hard work on the advisory board. She always cherished the many friends she made over the years.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth D. Spicer and Lurietta Draper.

Alberta is survived by her husband of 61 years, Benjamin Franklin Morris III; three daughters and sons-in law, Lynn M. & Jehu Banks, Lea and Lee Dulin, of Clayton, and Alice Louise and David Jester of Chesapeake, VA; one son and daughter-in-law, B. Franklin and Dorothy Morris, of Clayton. Alberta had 7 grandchildren, Larry and Gail Drummond, Lee and Marcia Dulin, Kim and Mike Wheatley, Sarah Peachey, DJ Jester, B. Franklin Morris V, and Rebecca Lea Morris. She also had 7 great-grandchildren. Alberta never tired of talking about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who held a special place in her heart.

Services will be held 11:00 AM Friday August 6 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7- 9:00 PM on Thursday August 5 and again on Friday morning at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, Delaware Valley Chapter, 399 Market St., Ste. 102, Phila., PA 19106.

Arrangements are by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna.

Chippie Sr., Edward T.

Edward T. Chippie Sr., of Smyrna, passed away at home with his family on Friday October 29, 2010. He was 84.

He was born at Buck Mountain, PA, the son of the late Michael and Anna Washko Chippi.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and had a long career in the civil service. He was a graduate of the McCann School of Business, Hazelton, PA.

Mr. Chippie retired in 1981 form Dover Air Force Base where he was Supervisor of the Material Section of Accounting and Finance, Base Supply.

He was an active member of St. Polycarp Parish, Smyrna, where he served 28 years as a Minister of the Eucharist.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael and John.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Dvorscak Chippie; three children, Maryanne (John) Trexler, of West Chester, PA; Edward Jr. (Kelly), of Townsend; and Suzanne (Paul) Craven, of Newark; three grandchildren, Naomi, Andrew, and Rebecca Trexler, all of West Chester, PA; two sisters, Mary Kirpa; Helen Secunda; and a brother, Joseph, all of Hazelton, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 12:00 PM Tuesday November 2 at St. Polycarp Catholic Church, Ransom Lane and South St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 10:00 AM in the parish hall. Burial at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, will be privately held.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Polycarp Parish, or to the St. Vincent DePaul Society of St. Polycarp Parish - both may be sent to St. Polycarp Parish, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, DE 19977.

Arrangements are by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Smyrna.

Steele, Lorraine

Lorraine Steele, of Smyrna, passed away in her home on Wednesday October 20, 2010. She was 79.

She was born to the late George and Gladys Smith in Smyrna Landing, and moved into town as a teenager. Lorraine enjoyed reading, bingo, playing the slots, gardening, traveling, and her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Franklin; and her sisters Gwen Rhoades, and Verna Davis.

Lorraine is survived by her two daughters, Lynn Marcum and Shelley Soriano; grandchildren, Jaime Marcum, Stephanie Smith, Jennifer Marcum, Jacob Smith, Autumn Smith, and Kristen Soriano; 8 great-grandchildren; her brother Edgar Smith and his wife Ruth.

Services will be held 12:00 PM Tuesday October 26 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 10:30 AM. Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901.

Arrangements are by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Smyrna.
