Pletsch Jr., Howard H.

Howard H. Pletsch Jr., of Hartly, died on Thursday September 16, 2010 at the home of his brother. He was 68.

He was born in Baltimore, MD on June 24, 1942, the son of the late Howard and Clara Pletsch.

After graduating from Salasianum High School in 1960, he enlisted in the Delaware Army National Guard. He worked for Reichhold Chemical Co., near Cheswold, retiring in 1994.

Howard was an avid football fan, particularly Penn State and the Philadelphia Eagles. He enjoyed socializing with friends and family.

He is survived by brothers David and James Pletsch, of Kenton; sister-in-law Veronica Pletsch; niece Katherine Pletsch and nephew Timothy Pletsch, all of Kenton.

Memorial Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday September 25 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 10:00 AM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Delaware Hospice Inc., 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Arrangements are by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Smyrna.

Carney Jr., Aloysius Joseph

Aloysius Joseph Carney Jr. passed away on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was 77.

Aloysius was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 20, 1933; son of the late Aloysius Carney and Bridget Anna Kennedy.

Upon graduation from Northeast Catholic High School for Boys, he entered the Air Force and served in the Korean Conflict from 1952-56 as a radio operator.

Al played sports all through school and into the Air Force. Al was an avid sports fan throughout his life. He coached 7th grade boys basketball at Our Lady of Grace Academy in Keeseville, NY.

Al was active in Alcoholics Anonymous. . He became director of the Clinton County Chapter and was always helping someone get sober.

Al owned and operated Keeseville ceramics in Keeseville, NY for many years. Marie would teach and Al would create; selling their creations to markets in Canada and all over the northeast.

In later years, Al worked as Marketing Manager developing weighing scales, finding markets and vendors to operate in department stores.

After retirement, Al settled in Smyrna, DE where he enjoyed long hours on the computer compiling information on the Carney and Fountain family ancestry for future generations.

Al is survived by the love of his life of 54 years, Marie; and by his four children, Michael and Debra Carney, Stephen Carney, Anne Marie and Michael Pyle, and Brian and Trish Carney; eight grandchildren, Melissa Francis, Mark Hassel, Shannon Carney, Kimberly Carney, Sean Pyle, Colin Pyle, Joseph Carney and Daniel Carney; and four great grandchildren, Alyssa Carney, Brooke Carney, Riley Carney and Brady Francis.

Your stories may have ended, Pops, but will never be forgotten!

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at St. Polycarp Church, Ransom Lane and South St, Smyrna, DE, on Thursday, January 6th at 11 AM where friends may gather in the church hall an hour prior.

Interment with military honors will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901 or via their website at delawarehospice.org.

Brown, David W.

David W. Brown, of Smyrna, and formerly of the Camden-Wyoming area, passed away on Tuesday May 25, 2010 at Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 59.

He was a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School and had been employed for many years as an equipment operator for Adel Construction.

He had a love for standard-bred horse racing and was most often found riding in his old pickup with his dog and riding buddy, Baxter the Boxer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Edna Brown; his brother, Ronnie Brown; and a step-daughter, Amber Tompkins.

He is survived by his wife, Crystal H. Brown; a son, Ronnie Brown, of Rehoboth; two step-sons, Joshua Wiley, of Smyrna; and Matthew Wiley, of Jacksonville, FL; a brother, Steve Brown, of MD; two sisters, Joy Dill, of Camden; and Diane Sheltise, of MD; and three grandchildren, Jadyn Brown; Sevyn Tompkins; and Bryndan Tompkins.

Services will be private.

If desired, contributions may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.

Biddle, Ralph L.

Ralph L. Biddle, of Smyrna, passed away on May 24, 2010. He was 85.

He was born May 20, 1925 to the late James and Mamie (Savin) Biddle.

Mr. Biddle worked for Tyler Refrigeration in Smyrna before retiring after 30 years of service. He enjoyed rabbit hunting, raising and training beagles, and was a member of several beagle clubs.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Clough Biddle; a son, John L. Biddle; brothers, James, George, Carroll, Charles, Dallas, and Donald Biddle; sisters Etta Governale and Helen Cannon; and a nephew raised like a brother, John Furrow.

He is survived by his daughter-in-law Shirley (Bonny) P. Biddle, of Smyrna; his sister-in-law Shirley D. Biddle, of Dover; his niece Phyllis Richardson, of Middletown; and numerous other in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Services will be held 11:00 AM Friday May 28 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 22 N. Union St., Smyrna, DE 19977.

Arrangements are by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Smyrna.

Harman Sr., Richard A.

Richard A. Harman Sr., of Smyrna, passed away at his home on Sunday June 27, 2010. He was 68.

He was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Hubert and Ruth Harman.

He was a graduate of Wilmington High School and attended the University of Delaware.

He served in the Army National Guard for 6 years.

Mr. Harman was employed as a cost engineer with the DuPont Co. at the Louviers site, Newark, for 23 years, retiring in 1992. He later worked for Del Dot for 7 years, and retired in 2003.

He was a member of St. Polycarp Catholic Church, Smyrna, and a 4th degree Knight and co-founder of the Brother Vincent Council #7517 of the Knights of Columbus. He twice served as Grand Knight of the Council.

He was involved with many activities within his church and community, including serving on the PTO, Band Boosters, Smyrna-Clayton Pop-Warner, and CYO.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Diane C. (Ruff) Harman, of Smyrna; two children, Michelle (Mark) Collier, of Magnolia; and Rick (Laura) Harman, of Smyrn; five grandchildren, Makenzie, Nicholas, Piper, Dean, and Paige; two brothers, H. Frederick Harman, and William Harman; and a brother-in-law, Allen Ruff.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10:00 AM Friday July 2 at St. Polycarp Catholic Church, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna.

Friends may call Thursday July 1 from 7-9:00 PM at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, and again Friday from 9-9:45AM

Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Newark.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice, Dr. Stephen Ogden, and their many friends for their care and support.
