Donna L. (West) Baird

Age 56, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday August 25, 2010 surrounded by many family and friends.

Born in Wilmington, Donna was the daughter of the late Samuel and Charlotte (Harrington) West. She was a 1972 graduate of William Penn High School. She was a member of the class reunion committee for the classes of 1972 and her husband’s class of 1969.

She was a dedicated employee at DuPont for over 18 years, moving on to DCV, where she was the Executive Administrative Assistant to the President of the company for 11 years. She also held positions at Eye Physicians & Surgeons and the Red Clay School District, most recently at North Star Elementary School.

She will be forever remembered as being a selfless, generous, and loving person with endless positive energy.

She will be dearly missed by her husband of 34 years, William M. Baird; her daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Aaron Beers of Wilmington and Erin Michelle and Jesse Blanton of Middletown; her beloved grandsons, Brandon, Cole and Cameron. A granddaughter is expected in December. Also surviving is her sister, Marsha Cooke and her husband Paul of New Castle; her mother-in-law Eleanor Baird; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Baird; niece Kelly Fedorkowicz, and nephews John Cooke and Patrick Baird.

Friends and family are invited to visitation on Sunday August 29th between 6 and 8 PM at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington. Funeral services will take place at 11am on Monday August 30th. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

Joyce E. Collins

Age 59, of Newark, DE, passed away at her home on Tuesday, May 4, 2010.

Born in West Chester, PA, Joyce was the daughter of Helen (Estheimer) DiFerdinando and the late Leonard Carpenter. She was also predeceased by her stepfather, Benny DiFerdinando.

A 1969 graduate of Wilmington High School, Joyce was a heavy-duty crafter and an accomplished seamstress. A great lover of making people smile, she volunteered her time at Christiana Hospital, where she dressed up as a clown. Joyce loved to cruise, and particularly enjoyed the island lifestyle in St. Martin. She was an avid fan of the Hodgson football team.

Joyce will be dearly missed by her husband of 39 years, Robert M. Collins; and her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert M., Jr. and Alicia of Middletown and David M. and Andrea of Newark. The light of Joyce's life were her four grandchildren: Paige, Chase, Ava and Braden. She found no greater joy than being a grandmother.

Also surviving is her mother, Helen DiFerdinando of Newark; two brothers and their wives, John and Sally Estheimer of Chichester, PA and Thomas and Marcia Carpenter of Omaha, NE; her sisters-in-law, Joyce Toy and her husband, Jerry and Paulette Cleaver; her brother-in-law, Jeff Collins and his wife, Phyllis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited for visitation on Friday, May 7th between 6 and 9 PM at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington. There will be no morning calling hours. Funeral services will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 10 AM at Richardson Park United Methodist Church, 11 N. Maryland Avenue, Richardson Park. Interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery, Wilmington.

Shaw, Derek J.

Derek J. Shaw, of Delaware City, passed away on Tuesday March 23, 2010 at the age of 37 after a short illness.

Born in Wilmington on March 31, 1972, Derek was the son of James B. Shaw and Pat (McDonald) Short. He was a 1990 graduate of Caravel Academy where he was an accomplished football and baseball athlete. He received many awards and recognitions including the state of Delaware leading rusher for Caravel's undefeated 1989 State championship football season. He also participated in the Blue/Gold Football and Carpenter Cup Baseball games. He attended Pace University on a baseball scholarship and attended Shenandoah University. After college he continued his passion for sports by playing Semi-Pro Baseball with several area teams. He also enjoyed umpiring little league and Babe Ruth League games.

He was a huge Eagles and Phillies fan, enjoyed bowling, being with friends and family, and had a fondness for animals.

He was previously employed by Brooks Armored Car and Hy-Point Dairy.

Derek is survived by his wife of 7 years, Mary Ellen (Suter) Shaw; mother and stepfather, Pat and George F. Short of Rehoboth Beach, DE; father and stepmother, James B. and Judith Shaw of Tucson, AZ; sister and brother-in-law, Jill and Howard Kuhn of Wilmington; brother, Jay Shaw of Phoenix, AZ; nephew, Justin D. Shaw of Wilmington; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation on Monday, March 29th between 5 and 8 PM at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington and on Tuesday morning from 10 to 11 AM. Funeral services will follow at 11 AM. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery, Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either the Delaware Humane Society, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801 or the Blue/Gold Game, c/o DFRC, 640 Plaza Drive, Newark, DE 19702.

Willard H. Catts "Woody"

Of Mitchell Estates, age 85, passed away peacefully at home after a brief battle with cancer.

Woody was a veteran of the United States Navy and served his country proudly during World War II. He was retired from Amtrak. He loved music and dancing and was famous for his jitterbug. He was able to continue dancing even through the early stages of his illness. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Woody was born on October 2, 1924, to the late Willard and Lillian Catts. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years, Catherine Catts, and his brother Walter. He is survived by his daughter Judy Bowers and her husband Barry, with whom he lived, his grandson Brent Bowers and his wife Stephanie and their son Jake and daughters Cassidy and Taylor, his granddaughter, Valerie Eddy and her husband Chris and their four daughters Tyler, Regan, Devyn and Peyton.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 31st, at 7pm at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, where friends may call after 6pm.

The family would like to thank the VA Hospital and Delaware Hospice for their wonderful care of Woody in his final weeks.

M. Virginia Kappauf

Of Newark, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at the Heartland Hospice House.

Virginia was born to John and Florence (Wood) Wlodkowski in Marshallton on April 4th, 1921. She completed her education in the Marshallton School District and graduated from Conrad High School as president of the honor society in 1939. Virginia retired from Motor Wheel in 1985 and became involved in the Kirkwood Gardens Civic Association where she acted as secretary for many years. She was a member of the Friends of Brandywine Springs.

Virginia is survived by her daughter Shirey Opalach; her granddaughters, Shirey Culver and A. J. Shannon; and her great granddaughters, Felicia Suiters, Jaclyn Huddleston, Ashley Culver, Devon Potts and Darien Potts.

We would like to thank Delaware Hospice, the doctors and nurses at Christiana Care and the staff at Heartland Hospice House.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 11th at 12 noon at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, where friends are invited to visitation after 11 AM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, Virginia would appreciate donations made to the Brennen School, The DE Autism Program, 144 Brennen Drive, Newark, DE 19713 in her memory for Devon and Darien Potts.

Haughey, John Rodger

Age 78, of Greenville, DE, passed away on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at the Compassionate Care Center at St. Francis Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Haughey was born in McKeesport, PA, the son of the late Gertrude (Clay) and James G. Haughey. He was a research and development chemist for Merck. Rodger worked for 23 years for Mine Safety in Wilkinsburg, PA and later helped design the helmets for the space shuttle at ILC Dover.

Rodger was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church where he was very active in the religious education of third graders. He also served as an usher for eight years.

Rodger is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ramona (Margalati) Haughey; his sons and their spouses, Gregory V. and Helen of Magnolia, DE, Patrick D. and Sally of Pittsburgh, PA, and Rodger F. and Wendy of Newark, DE; his daughters and their husbands, Susan C. "Susie" and William Hudson of Wilmington, DE and Shannon "Shanie" and Paul Thompson of Wilmington, DE. Rodger had one son, Dominic J. "Nicky" Haughey predeceased him. Also surviving are his brother, Jerome G. Haughey and sister, Mary G. "Molly" Haughey, both of McKeesport, PA. He also leaves seven grandchildren to cherish his memory.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday morning, June 30, at 10:30 am, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, DE 19807, where friends may call after 9 am. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Friends may also call at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 703 North Broom Street, Wilmington, DE 19805 On Tuesday, June 29, from 6-8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Autism Society of America, 4340 East-West Highway, Ste. 350, Bethesda, MD 20814.

Marie T. Capicciotti

Age 83, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at the Heartland Hospice House.

Born in Wilmington, Marie was the daughter of the late Vincent and Amelia (Sagnella) Casapulla. She worked for Delaware Dry Goods as a stockperson before her retirement. She enjoyed cooking.

She was predeceased by her husband, Paul S. Capicciotti in August 2009; her son-in-law, John K. Leverage, Sr.; and her siblings, Madeline, Frankie and Daniel Casapulla.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Capicciotti of Wilmington and Rose Leverage of New Castle; her grandchildren, Charles "Ebbie" Alfree III of New Castle and Cynthia Stocktill and her husband, Kenneth of Elkton; her great grandson, Anthony Davis of Elkton; her brothers, Joseph Casapulla of Newark and Alfred Casapulla and his wife, Joy of Wilmington; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 17th at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, where friends are invited to visitation after 10 AM. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Heartland Hospice House, 5661 Ochetree Lane, Wilmington, DE 19808.

Clayton, Elizabeth A.

Elizabeth A. Clayton, Age 71, of Newark, DE died peacefully on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer.

She will be dearly missed by her children and their spouses, Lori Lynn and Michael Szymonowicz of Bear, DE, Larry and Lesley Clayton of Williamsport, PA, Scott Clayton and friend, Fred Padilla of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Anne Marie and Robert Brown of Swedesboro, NJ; six grandchildren, Lawrence and Kyle Clayton and Christina, Brittany, Ariel and Kelly Brown; two great grandchildren, Orion and Gabriel and her sister, Mary Ellen Burke. She was predeceased by her sister, Veronica Breheny.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 9th at 1 PM at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Churchman's Village, 4949 Ogletown Stanton Road, Newark, DE 19713.
