Sondberg, Harry S.

HARRINGTON — Harry S. Sondberg, of Harrington, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010. He was 65.

Mr. Sondberg served his country proudly in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Sondberg's recent employer was the National Security Agency at Fort Meade for 25 years, as a computer operator. Before that, he worked for the Department of Defense for 5 years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed bowling.

In addition to his parents, Chris and Nellie Sondberg, he was preceded in death by his sister, Maryellen Johnson.

He is survived by her loving wife of 36 years, Judi Sondberg of Harrington; brother, Chris "Billie" Sondberg of Nags Head, N.C., and John Sondberg of Crofton, Md.; and sister, Julie Bell of West Point, Va.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville, Md. A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., this evening at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association National Office 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.

Bettye P. Greenly

HARRINGTON - Bettye P. Greenly, of Harrington, passed away on June 7, 2010 in Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 86. Bettye was born on March 19, 1924 in Hattiesburg, Miss., the daughter of Roy M. Pooley and Bess Boozer.

Bettye and her family moved to Jacksonville, Fla. in 1927 where she was raised. Bettye met Fred B. Greenly Jr., of Harrington, in 1941 and they were married on December 19, 1943 in Harrington. Fred B. Greenly preceded her in death in 1995. They were married for 52 years.

Bettye devoted her life to her beloved family and children. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 11 of Harrington; the Harrington Senior Center; and Asbury United Methodist Church, of Harrington.

She is also preceded in death by her brother - Leslie Carl Pooley.

Bettye is survived by her three sons; Fred B. Greenly III, of Smith's Station, Ala., David R. Greenly, of Ocean View, Del., and W. Allen Greenly, of Cumming, Ga.; her brother, Roy M. Pooley Jr., of Jacksonville, Fla.; her two sisters: Dorothy Shephard, of Orlando, Fla. and Margaret Mauer, of Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and many more extended family members.

There will be a memorial service held at Melvin's Funeral Home on South Rt. 13 in Harrington at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, 2010.

Graveside services will be privately held on Friday, June 11, 2010 at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in her name to the American Epilepsy Society, 342 N. Main, Suite 301, West Hartford, CT. 06112-2507.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington.

Gayle B. Smith, 84

HARRINGTON — Gayle B. Smith, of Harrington, died April 5, 2010, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 84. He was born in Milford, to the late Frank "Brown" and Lily Smith.

Mr. Smith served his country proudly in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII. He flew on many missions on board B29 Bombers. He went on to graduate from the Stanton Military Academy. Back in Harrington, Mr. Smith opened up Harrington Motors in 1947 and sold cars until 1970 when he decided to open up a motorcycle shop, which he ran until 1995.

His favorite hobbies included competitive trap shooting and hunting. He enjoyed fishing on his boat the most. He will be remembered as a kind person who was a true gentleman and a man of his word. He was always smiling and could have you laughing in just a few seconds.

He always put his family first and foremost and will be deeply missed.

Mr. Smith was a life member of the NRA, a member of the American Legion in Lewes and Harrington, and the Rotary of Harrington, where he was an avid member and used to hold meetings at his house in the old days.

He was preceded in death by wife, Thelma Smith; sons, Glenn, and Gary Smith; and brother, Ralph Smith.

He is survived by a son, Greg B. Smith and wife Debbie of Harrington; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Friday, April 9, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, where a visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Arrangements are handled by the Melvin Funeral Home of Harrington.

Brocklehurst, Edward

Edward K. Brocklehurst Sr.

Edward K. Brocklehurst Sr., 46 FELTON - Edward K. Brocklehurst Sr., 46, of Felton, died Thursday, March 25, 2010. He was born in Willingboro, N.J., to the late John A. and Joan D. Brocklehurst Sr.

In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and golfing and spending time in upstate New York on the family farm.

He is survived by his son, Edward "Eddie" K. Brocklehurst Jr. of Dover and his mother, Shelly Brocklehurst of Dover; and brothers and sister-in-law, John A. Jr. and Debra Brocklehurst of Newburgh, N.Y., and William R. Brocklehurst of Georgetown.

Graveside services were held at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, April 1, at Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Arrangements by Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington.

Elizabeth Ann Kuschel

SEAFORD - Elizabeth Ann Kuschel, of Seaford, died Friday, July 16, 2010, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 80.

Mrs. Kuschel was a homemaker and assisted her husband in his ministry of 32 years. She enjoyed playing the piano, and was an avid reader. She loved to sew, bake, and enjoyed camping, fishing and concerts with the family. She was really involved with genealogy as well and enjoyed researching and learning new things.

She will be remembered as a happy person, who loved her family dearly, and who was always uplifting others and praying for them. Her personal outreach was working in soup kitchens and helping others in need. She passed along these traits to her children as she enjoyed teaching them most of all.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Greenwood, member of the Eastern Star, Past Worthy Matron, the United Methodist Women, and served as a youth group leader and camp counselor.

In addition to her parents, William and Alice Hickey, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. John William Kuschel.

She is survived by a son, William; daughters, Mary Alice, and Ann Elizabeth; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Zion United Methodist Church, Salisbury, Md., where a visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Parsons Cemetery, Salisbury.

Donations may be made to the funeral home to help offset funeral expenses. Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.

Messick, Ronald R.

HARRINGTON - Ronald R. Messick Sr., of Harrington, died on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at his home. He was 67.

Ronald was the owner and operator of Ron's Mobile Homes. His motto of, "We'll make a believer out of you, " helped him establish several communities around Harrington. His greatest accomplishment was building Ron's Community, a mobile home park, from scratch by selling one home at a time, to the present day total of 143.

He believed in treating everyone equally and fairly. Being in business for over 30 years, he had many loyal repeat customers who come back time after time to buy a home. Ron will be remembered as easy going and laid back. He loved to laugh and never knew a stranger. He made friends easily and once he met you, he never forgot you. He loved to build things, and make things happen. "No" was not an option for him, and he followed all his projects through to completion.

In his spare time he enjoyed deep water fishing and landscaping his lawn to make it look nice. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him and by the countless and devoted members of his community and mobile home parks.

Ron was a member of the American Legion, Harrington Moose Lodge, and the Manufacturing Housing Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Messick and Hilda Buckson.

He is survived by his companion of over 5 years, Dawn Sabino of Harrington; son, Ronald Messick Jr. of Harrington; daughters, April Steagall of Harrington, Rachael Messick of Harrington, and Genieviea Messick of Harrington; and five grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE 19952, where a visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, 2010. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.
