Betty Jane "BJ" (Hurd) Steffen

Beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend of many passed away suddenly on the morning of November 20, 2010.

Born November 14, 1941, the youngest daughter of the late George and Mildred Hurd, she was only 69 years old. BJ attended Dover High School, was a licensed Cosmetologist and was very proud of her 1994 A.A.S. in Medical Laboratory Technology from Del Tech.

Betty Jane was preceeded in death by her sister Sara and brother Joseph, whose wife, Eunice still lives in Dover.

BJ is survived by her brothers and sisters GeorgeAnna Lawing (husband, Max) of Vero Beach, FL; James Hurd (wife, MaryLou) of Dover; Mary Mantz (husband, Don) of Sun City, CA; Laura Richter (husband, Kenneth) of Canterbury; Grace Sipple (husband, Lyman) of Dover; Jason Hurd (wife, Margie) of Franklin, NC and Clara Mercer (husband, Eugene) of Mendham, NJ.

She has two sons, John of Naples, FL and Blake (wife, Stacy) of Bear, two grandsons and many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Her BFF of more than 60 years was Louise Frear Baylis, currently residing in Naples, FL.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday November 26th at St. John's Lutheran Church on Lotus St in Dover.

Kozak, Mary Vivian

Mary Vivian Kozak, age 74, passed peacefully in her home on Sunday, November 28, 2010 surrounded by family.

Vivian was born May 6, 1936 in Ripley, Mississippi, the daughter of late P. A. and W. Murry Moffitt. She attended Faulkner High School and graduated in 1954. Soon after graduation, Vivian moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for the FBI until she met her husband, Bernard Kozak. On March 5, 1955 she and Bernard were married.

The Kozak family settled in Dover, Delaware where Bernard was stationed at Dover Air Force Base. Vivian held clerical positions with various businesses in the Dover area. However, her main focus was being a homemaker and mother to her two children.

Vivian is survived by her husband, Bernard of Dover, her two daughters Teresa Trader and her husband Ross of Dover, Regina Wood and her husband Ron of Marydel, four grandchildren Ariel Trader-Knauff, Chelsea Trader, Rebecca and Robert Wood, her brother Edward Moffitt and his wife Ernestine of Mississippi, her sister Flora Neri and her husband Bruno of Dover.

Services will be held on Thursday December 2, 2010 at Trader Funeral Home at 1:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family an hour beforehand.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to her devoted caregivers and Delaware Hospice for their help and support.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Grace Church (www.Gracedover.com) and or CenterPoint Church (www.Findyourcenterpoint.com)

Clouette, Nettie Ware Mills

Nettie Ware Mills Clouette, 88, Seaford, passed away Sunday December 26, 2010 at Seaford Center Seaford.

She was born on December 27, 1921 in Barclay, MD to William and Pearl Sparks Ware.

Nettie was a graduated of Sudlersville High School class of 1938. She graduated from Chester, PA School of Nursing as an R. N. She worked at Kent General Hospital for 20 years, Scott Nursing Home in Smyrna, for 13 years and later Delaware Home and Hospital retiring in 1990, concluding 50 years of nursing. She is preceded in death by a daughter Catherine S. "Kitty" Rucker in 1990, a Great grand son Tyler J. Mills in 2009.

She is survived by Son, Roger S. Mills of Sudlersville, MD. Son, Wayne Mills of Dover, DE. Daughter, Marjorie L. Hastings of Del Mar, DE. 12, Grandchildren, 18, Great grand children.

Remembrance Services will be held Friday 12/31/2010 11:30 AM at Trader Funeral Home in Dover, DE Burial will be at the Busick Church Cemetery Tempelville, MD

Friends may call one hour before the time of the service at the Trader Funeral Home in Dover.

The family request that memorial contributions be given to Busick Church and Cemetery c/o Charlotte Davis 130 Millington Road Millington, MD 21651

Batton, J. Hope

J. Hope Batton of Calhoun County, WV passed away Nov. 19, 2010 at home surrounded by her family. Hope had a long career as an optician with DAFB optical shop. She also worked in retail. She is survived by her husband and children, William Ernest Batton, William Lee Batton, Russell Ernest Batton, Dianna Warder-Fisher, and Monica Batton. She is also survived by 4 adult grand children and 7 great grand children.

Memorial services will be Wed. Dec. 1, 2010 at 1 PM at the Trader Funeral Home 12 Lotus Street Dover, DE Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Hewitt, Arthur Art

Air Force

Arthur Leonard Hewitt, September 13, 1939 - November 3, 2010, of Camden, DE after suffering a stroke in August 2010 passed away peacefully at Heartland Hospice in Wilmington, DE. Art was born in Mattoon, Illinois and graduated from Ridgeville High School in Ridgeville, Indiana. He served 4 years in the Air Force before being honorably discharged and then attending college where he obtained a degree in Manufacturing Engineering. He worked many places, including General Foods in Dover, Hollywood Brands, Midwest Potato, and Delaware State University, and was the sole proprietor since 1987 of Blue Hen Electric Company

He was third of eleven children born to Leonard and Wilma Hewitt and the beloved husband of Jean Hewitt for 35 years. He is preceded in death by his father Leonard, brother Lyle Hewitt, sister Linda Jackson, and son Sean Hewitt. He is survived by his mother Wilma, wife Jean, brothers Robert, James, Kent, and William Hewitt, sisters Eleanor Leap, Janet Vaughn, Teresa Berwick, and Jo Ellen Hewitt, children Cindi Pallmann and Chad Hewitt, son-in-law Matthew Pallmann, and beloved grandchildren Elizabeth, Torrin, and Ian Pallmann. Art loved fishing, hunting, woodworking, and most of all spending time with his children and grandchildren. His greatest joy the last 7 years was his grandchildren.

Art was always ready to lend a hand and maintained his sense of humor until the very end. Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing on Sunday, November 7, from 2 - 4 pm, at Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover, DE. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Monday, November 8, at Southside Baptist Church, 4904 S. Dupont Hwy., Dover, DE. Immediately following, Art will be interred at Sharon Hills Memorial Park, 2928 Sharon Hill Rd., Dover, DE. The family requests instead of flowers, that donations be made to Heartland Hospice, 5661 Ochletree Lane, Wilmington, DE 19808; to Southside Baptist Church, 4904 S. Dupont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901; or to a trust fund for the grandchildren being set up by their grandmother, Jean Hewitt, in memory of Art Hewitt. Checks to the trust fund can be made out to Jean Hewitt or "In Memory of Art Hewitt Trust".

VanDevander, Joyce Joy

Joyce "Joy" Vandevander, 74, Dover, passed away Wednesday November 24, 2010 at KGH Bay Health Dover.

She was born on April 27, 1936 in Whitwell, England to the late Richard and Grace Walkley Rimmington.

Joy retired from J. C. Penny after many years, she was in cosmetic sales. She loved animals and gardening. She is preceded in death by her husband Lonnie VanDevander in 1983.

She is survived by Daughter and her husband, Lynn and Greg VanDevander Smith of Dover, DE. Son, David VanDevander of, TX. Granddaughter, Jamie Barrett, Granddaughter, Taylor Smith Grandson, Lonnie VanDevander, Grate Grandson, Quinten Roach, Sister, Jean Craft of England, . Sister, Audrey Douglas of England, . Life long companion, Otis King of Dover.

Services will be private.

The family request that memorial contributions be given to Kent County S.P.C.A.

Sharp, Alfred

Alfred Sharp, Sr., 68, Frederica, passed away Friday November 26, 2010 at

Delaware Hospice Center Milford.

He was born on November 12, 1942 in Milford, DE to the late George and

Elsie Biddle Sharp.

Alfred was a lifelong resident of Delaware and was retired from Kraft Foods of Dover as a senior warehouse supervisor. After his retirement, he was employed at Green Meadows and State Street Assisted Living. He enjoyed puzzles, bird watching, camping and spending time with his grandchildren and his pets, especially Tigger. He was very loving and supportive in all life's trials with everyone he knew and he could always make you laugh. He will be dearly missed by all. He is preceded in death by his sisters Elsie Ethridge, Ruth Jeannette Hammond and Virginia (Midge) Williams.

He is survived by his loving Wife, Carolyn Sharp of Frederica, DE. He was the loving father of 5 sons and 2 daughters, Nancy and Robert Staton of Spring Branch, TX., Alfred and Lori Sharp of Camden, DE., Tim and Cindy Steerman of Bunker Hill, WV., Donna Adams of, TN., Wayne and Laura Sharp of San Antonio, TX., James and Laurie Sharp of Burlington, NJ., Michael and Jocelyn Sharp of Bristol, VA. Brother, James and Alice Sharp of Greenwood, DE.

Brother, George and Judy Sharp of Greenwood, DE. 20, Grandchildren, 3, Great grand children. He was a foster parent to many children whom he enjoyed and remembered fondly throughout his life.

Remembrance Services will be held Tuesday 11/30/2010 1 PM at Trader Funeral Home in Dover, DE Entombment will be at the Sharon Hill Memorial Park, Dover, DE

Friends may also call Tuesday 11 AM till time of the service at the Trader Funeral Home in Dover.

Schwartz, Winfield L.

Army

Winfield L. Schwartz, age 98, of Dover, DE passed away peacefully on December 10, 2010.

He was born on August 7, 1912 in Schuylkill Haven, PA to Elmer W. Schwartz and Edna Loy Schwartz. He spent his childhood in Schuylkill Haven and most of his adult life in Dover, where he worked for 31 years as a Plant Engineer at International Playtex. He was a registered Professional Engineer in DE and NJ and retired in 1977.

Winfield graduated from Schuylkill Haven High School in 1930 and from Muhlenberg College in 1934. He also attended Purdue University during his service in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served his country in the Philippines. He was a charter member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Dover and was an active member of the church until his death. He enjoyed reading and travel.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother in law, William J. McGlinchey. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth A. Dietz Schwartz, his son Richard and wife Michelle Tau of Cranbury, NJ and his son Robert and wife Cynthia of Rolla, MO. He is also survived by his sister, Marion A. McGlinchey of Schuylkill Haven and grandchildren Christopher Yung and Melissa Tau Schwartz of Cranbury.

A funeral service will be held at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church on Wednesday, December 15 at 11 am. A visitation scheduled for 10 am will also be held at the church. Burial will be at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Friedensburg, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St. Andrew's Lutheran Church 425 North DuPont Hwy Dover, DE 19901. Winfield loved his family very much and will be dearly missed.
