Marian L. Pursley

Of Greenwood, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2010 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. She was 75.

Marian was born on July 30, 1935 in New York, New York, daughter of the late Joseph and Isabelle (Marino) DeMaria.

She was employed with the State of Delaware as part of the administrative staff in the Medical Coding department for 15 years, retiring from that position in 2006.

Mrs. Pursley enjoyed aromatherapy as a hobby in her free time.

She was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church in Milford, where before her illness; she was training to be a Eucharistic minister to homebound members.

She is survived by her husband of four years, Jesse C. Pursley; a son, Gary G. Lohr of Wilmington; two sisters, Anita DeMaria of Saratoga, NY and Debbie McCullough and her husband Larry of Glen Burnie, MD; two grandsons, Ryan Lohr and Gary Lohr and a lifelong friend of 55 years, Ann "Muffy" Craner of Dover.

Friends may call from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at the St. John's Catholic Church, 506 Seabury Ave, Milford.

Burial will be held in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to St. John's Catholic Church, Building Fund, 506 Seabury Ave, Milford, DE, 19963 or to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE, 19963.

Elizabeth A. Farrall "Betty"

Of Milford, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 79.

Betty was born on July 22, 1931 in Chestertown, Maryland, daughter of the late Archie and Florence (McGinnis) Stubbs.

Mrs. Farrall was a full time homemaker who loved cooking and working in her yard. She also enjoyed playing Par 3 golf.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Farrall in 2002, two sisters; Amy Walls and Marie Brittingham and a granddaughter, Tina M. Farrall.

She is survived by five sons and four daughters-in-law; William A. and Debbie Farrall of Milford; Edward W. "Buck" and Sharon Farrall of Harrington; Thomas R. "Squeak" and Lorraine Farrall of Harrington; Gary A. Farrall of Milford and Ricky Bramble of Cheswold; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Carroll Short of Cecilton, MD; a brother, James R. Stubbs of Oakwood, GA; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several neices and nephews.

Services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford, where friends may call two hour prior.

Burial will be held in the Milford Community Cemetery on Route 113.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the American Lung Association of Delaware, 630 Churchman's Rd, Suite 202, Newark, DE, 19702.

John Richardson Peirce V

Of Milford, Delaware, died Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland. He was 74.

John was born on October 27, 1936 in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, son of the late John R. Peirce IV and Virginia May (Grimm) Peirce.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and up until his illness, was an active volunteer at the Air Mobility Command Museum at the Dover Air Force Base.

Mr. Peirce retired from Peninsula Oil Company in Seaford on April 1, 2002, where he held the position of Safety and Environmental Director for the company. He was also the Project Manager for the construction of the Uncle Willie's convenience stores.

John looked forward to trips taken to Hatteras, North Carolina and any time he could spend with his family and friends. He also enjoyed going to yard sales, kayaking, surf fishing and Arabian horse shows.

He was always mindful of a person's responsibility to civic duties. John was a former member and past president of the Milford Jaycees, a member of the Delmarva Oil Heat Association and a member of the Arabian Horse Association of Delmarva. He was a commissioner on the State Emergency Response Commission, a past member of the Delmarva Water Transport Committee and was an early member of the Seaford Mutual Assistance Group (SMAG), an organization dedicated to preventing and mitigating hazardous material spills affecting the water.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sally E. Gluck.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Ann Burke Peirce; his daughter, Gail S. Ament and her husband John J. Ament, Jr. of Milford; two grandsons, Trevor P. Turner and Ryan P. Ament and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Food Bank of Delaware, 14 Garfield Way, Newark, DE, 19713 or to your favorite charity.

Herschel N. Poore

Of Milford, passed away Monday, January 10, 2011 at his home. He was 91.

Herschel was born on August 17, 1919 in Milford, son of the late James Brainard and Estella (Messick) Poore.

He was a proud veteran of the United States Army serving his country during World War II.

Mr. Poore owned and operated Poore's Furniture & Appliance Store from 1940 to 1969. He was elected as Kent County Sheriff in 1968 and was appointed a Delaware State Constable in 1970 where he remained until his retirement in 1992.

Herschel was a member of the Milford Lions Club, the Milford Kiwanis Club, the American Legion Post #3 in Milford, the Blue Hen VFW Post #6483 in Milford, the Milford Elks Lodge #2401, the Union Lodge #7 AF&AM; in Dover and the First State Shrine.

He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Milford where he had served as a Trustee.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie Dare Poore, a son and daughter-in-law; Jeffrey B. and Suzette Holly Green Poore of Milford; a daughter and son-in-law; Joanne Natalie Poore Musser and Calvin L. Musser III of Laurel and four grandchildren; Jeffrey B. Poore, II, Nathan Daren Poore, C. Landis Musser, IV and Jason Herschel Musser.

Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 2011 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford, where friends may call two hours prior.

Burial will be held in Barratts Chapel Cemetery in Frederica.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 172, Milford, DE, 19963.

Edward L. Hendel, D.D.S.

Of Houston, Delaware, passed away Monday, November 29, 2010. He was 74.

Ed was born on September 16, 1936 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, son of the late Albert and Beulah (Toney) Hendel.

He graduated from Hamilton College in upstate New York after which he pursued his degree in dentistry from the University of Pittsburgh, Dental School. After Dental School he completed his internship at Wilmington General Hospital and The Childrens Beach House in Lewes.

Dr. Hendel owned a Milford Dental practice for 47 years, retiring in 2009.

In his leisure time he enjoyed gardening and landscaping his yard. He also had a passion for flying, skiing, sailing and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Hendel was preceded in death by his brother Robert I. Hendel and his daughter Carolyn in June 2010.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Christine M. Hendel; a son, Gregory J. Hendel of Belgrade, Montana; a daughter, Jennifer E. Hendel of Littleton, Colorado and a sister, Janice Walker of Telluride, Colorado.

A memorial service will be held for Ed and Carolyn at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Christ Episcopal Church, 200 N. Church St, Milford.

Burial will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Milford Public Library, 11 SE Front St, Milford, DE, 19963 or Christ Episcopal Church, PO Box 191, Milford, DE, 19963.
