Shamp, Jean L.

LINCOLN - Jean L. Shamp, of Lincoln, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. She was 73.

Mrs. Shamp became of resident of Delaware in 1958, after moving down from Pennsylvania. She worked as a packer and operator for Playtex for over 23 years, retiring in 1999.

Her favorite hobbies included swimming and dancing. She also liked to entertain family and friends while sipping coffee around the kitchen table, and keeping you in stitches from laughing so hard.

Mrs. Shamp always put everybody else first. She was an amazing one of a kind person, very loving and kind, giving, and protective of her family. She will be sorely missed.

In addition to her parents, Francis James and Margaret Delozier, she was preceded in death by brother, William Delozier; and a sister, Delores Drury.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Gerald E. Shamp; daughters, Deborah McGuire of Lorton, Va., Tracey McDade of Felton, and Audrey Wegner of Lincoln; sisters, Mary Fyock of Sidman, Pa., and Patty Hall of Laughlintown, Pa.; eight grandchildren, and ten great- grandchildren.

Memorial Service will be noon, Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, where a visitation will be one hour prior.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy. Harrington.

Witherspoon, Sclena "Sug"

Sclena Parson Durham Witherspoon was born on March 29, 1924 to the late Norman and Goldie Parson of Havre de Grace, Maryland. She was the eldest of five children. She was fondly called Sug, by family and friends.

Sclena entered eternal life on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Citizens Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Havre de Grace, Maryland. Sclena was preceded in death by her brother Pennycoe Parson and a sister Mary Galloway.

At an early age she joined St. Matthew A.U.M.P. Church. Sclena remained active until her health started to decline. Her church family called her Mother Witherspoon. She was a member of the choir, served on the Usher Board and served on several committee's. She sang with the United Choral Ensemble. Sclena was a also a member of the Evening Star Chapter #20/OES. Sclena loved to cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends, she had a wonderful personality that could light up a room.

Sclena was educated in the Harford County Public School System. She demonstrated her culinary talents at Harford County School and Bayou Restaurant. She later worked as a Nursing Assistant providing comfort to many with her kind caring heart.

Sclena married Richard Durham and later in life she married William C. Witherspoon, who preceded her in death. Sclena was the mother of eight children. Three children preceded her death. Carouso Durham, Mary Walton (George) and Catherine Clayton (Larry).

Sclena was the matriarch of the family. Sclena was a loving daughter, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and a friend to all.

She leaves to mourn three daughters, Diana Heath (James) of New York, Mildred Durham of Baltimore, Maryland and Tryvinnia of Havre de Grace, Maryland, two sons Norman Whittington of Randallstown, Maryland and Roscoe Durham (Elmira) of Fallston, Maryland. Twenty-five grandchildren, thirty -five great grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends. Many thanks to Gloria Lee Smith, her adopted daughter.

Visitation will be Saturday January 22, 2011, 10a.m.-12p.m.with funeral starting 12 p.m. at St. Matthew A.U.M.P. Church, 563 Revolution Street, Havre de Grace, MD. Burial will be in St. James United Cemetery, Havre de Grace, MD.

Grant, Kathi M.

HARRINGTON - Kathi M. Grant, of Harrington, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was 43.

Kathi was a homemaker. She was regarded as a great artist who could draw beautiful art as well as make great piņatas. She loved her crafts and made numerous paper mache masterpieces over the years.

Her favorite activity was going to the beach and spending time next to the ocean. She enjoyed collecting driftwood, sand, and rocks that washed up on the shore. Whenever possible, she would vacation at the beach.

Kathi was known as very outgoing where everybody was a friend. She could be blunt at times, and was known for saying things like it was. She was very sentimental about birthdays and holidays and made time to recognize even the little things.

She made sure her sons went to church every Sunday, and she looked forward to going herself and spent countless hours talking about the Bible and Bible stories. She lived her beliefs and believed in giving to all. Her family was her world and she accepted all her son's friends as her own children. She especially had a soft spot for Michael, Amanda, and Mark. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by a cousin, James Redden Jr.; and uncle, Gary Redden.

She is survived by her parents, James Grant of Seaford and Nancy Grant of Harrington; sons, Matthew D. Grant and his girlfriend Miranda Wright of Harrington, and Caleb C. Grant of Harrington; maternal grandmother, June Severe of Harrington; siblings, Maria Redden of Harrington, Linda Young of Harrington, Jimmy Grant, Larry Grant, Donny Grant and his wife Sharon, Danny Grant and his wife Jennifer, Megan Grant and David Grant; niece, Christina Butler; nephew, Sean Colbert; uncles, James Redden Sr., and Roger Redden; and aunt, Lois Pinson.

Services will be 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Harrington, where visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the funeral home to help defray funeral expenses.

Betty Louise Betit

Age 85, of Newark, DE, passed away at Union Hospital in Elkton, MD on Tuesday, January 18, 2011.

Born in Pittsfield, MA, Betty was the daughter of the late Russell and Alice (O'Keefe) Arthur. She enjoyed cards, games, cooking, and entertaining. She was also an avid reader. Her husband, William E. Betit, Sr., predeceased her in1999.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Carol A. and Freeman Gray of Newark, Susan L. and Robert McClanen of Salem, WV, and Alice M. and William Kelly of Newark, DE; her sons and daughters-in-law, William E., Jr. and Carolyn of Fort Mills, SC and Vincent A. and Deborah of Newark, DE; a half sister, Maureen Arthur Wilusz of North Adams, MA; 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 22nd at 1 PM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 345 Bear-Christiana Road, Bear, where friends are invited to visitation after 11:30 AM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Calvert Manor Nursing Scholarship Fund, 1881 Telegraph Road, Rising Sun, MD 21911.

James A. Lofink

Age 93, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 17, 2011 at Manor Care Health Services.

Born in Wilmington, James was the son of the late Phillip J. and Joanna (McDermott) Lofink. During World War II, he served his nation in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater. He worked for the US Postal Service for 41 years before his retirement. He was predeceased by two sisters, Phyllis and Jane Lofink and a brother, Joseph Lofink.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 65 years, Viola (Rollo) Lofink; his son and daughter-in-law, Vincent Lofink and Janet Kilpatrick of Hockessin, DE; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and Carl Jones of Massey, MD; six grandchildren, Brian Lofink and his wife, Michelle McClafferty, Michael, Anthony and Richard Lofink, Janet Jones and her life partner, Georgie Aquirre-Sacasa and Randolph Jones and his wife, Rachel; and a great granddaughter, Viola Jean Jones.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 20th at 11 AM at Christ Our King Church, 28th and Madison Streets, Wilmington, where friends are invited to visitation after 10 AM. Interment will be private.

Mitchell, Clara Emily

Clara Emily Mitchell, "Emily" as everyone knew her, age 100, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2011 surrounded by her family. Born in Philadelphia on February 8, 1910, she was the daughter of the late William T. and Caroline Clark Cowan. She was a member of Hickory Hill United Methodist Church, and a member of the UMC Women. She was a lovely independent woman, who mowed her own grass till she was 88 with a push mower, and cleaned and maintained her own home till she was 93. She enjoyed traveling, watching TV and it was noted at her 100th Birthday Party that she was one of the last people alive who could recall living through the Great Influenza of 1918, and could recall numerous parades and gatherings in Philadelphia with Civil War Veterans. She loved, and was devoted to her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband: Delbert B. Mitchell in 1963; she was also preceded by two sons, Jerry Lee and Kermit Ellis Mitchell; and a daughter-in-law, Lavessa Mitchell. She is survived by her sons: Burton Mitchell, of Salisbury, MD and Daniel Mitchell, and his wife, Kay, of Dagsboro, DE and a daughter, Emily Draper, and her husband, Steve, of Milford, DE. She has 9 Grand-children, 12 Great-grand-children and 3 Great-Great-grand-children. A very special thanks is extended to Emily's dear friend, and caretaker, Mary Tracy, who cared for her in her waning years. Services will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE where friends may call one hour prior for visitation. The Rev. Betty Jo Megee will officiate. Interment follows at Millsboro Cemetery. In Lieu of Flowers, family suggests memorial contributions to Hickory Hill Church C/O; Roy Rogers, Treasurer; 28209 Walt Carmean Lane; Millsboro, DE 19966.

James Marshall Divel

Of Selbyville, formerly of Milford, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, January 19, 2011. He was 96.

He was born in Amaranth, Pennsylvania on September 16, 1914.

Mr. Divel served in the United States military for 27 years. He entered the US Army Air Corp in 1942, and then selected to serve in the US Air Force from where he retired in 1969. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #534 in Harrington since 1975. He had a life long love of playing cards. He frequently played his favorite game of pinochle at the Moose Lodges in Harrington and Camden, the Senior Centers in Harrington and Dover and with family and friends. Mr. Divel won several local championships. He also loved hunting, fishing and tinkering with engines with family and friends in PA, DE and MD.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Lois E. Divel.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Anita E. Eastman; his loving son, Glen Marshall Divel and wife Karen; his grandchildren; Christine C. daCosta and husband George, Paul Marshall Divel and Christopher Glen Divel; his great-grandson, Matthew James Chapin daCosta; his sister, Lena Belle Berkstresser and husband Donald and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, January 24, 2011 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

The interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE, 19963.
