Rogers, Anamae R.

Anamae R. Rogers, 78, of Millsboro, DE departed this life to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. Born in New Castle, DE, on Sept 9, 1931 she was the daughter of the late John and Anna Hall Ryan. She was a homemaker, and had been very active in her community. She was a Charter Member & Life Member of the Indian River Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, and was the last of a long line of Fire Service members in her family representing many, many years of service. She was a member of American Legion Post 28, a "Bingo Queen" and loved crochet, crafts and Quilting. She was a member of the Oak Orchard A.G.A.P.E. Center. In addition to having helped raise about half the kids in Riverdale and Oak Orchard, she was devoted to the Lord and her family, kept an eye out for everybody in Oak Orchard, and was a Richard Petty NASCAR fan. She is survived by her sons: Allen L. Rogers and his wife Deborah; Harvey "Hob" Rogers and his wife Terri and daughters: Joyce A. Bowden and husband Mike; Carol L. Miller and husband Allen "Apple"; Millie I. Charnick and husband, Dave: and Bonnie M. Serman - all of Millsboro. In addition, one brother Toby Ryan, of Townsend, DE. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. She was preceded in death by her brothers: Jack, Paul, Tobe, Hob, and Oscar Ryan. Services will be Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 2:00 PM, with Pastor Allen Miller officiating, at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St. in Millsboro, DE where friends may call two hours prior for visitation. Interment will be at Millsboro Cemetery. Family suggests memorial contributions in her memory to the Indian River Vol. Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, or the Community Church of Oak Orchard.

Jackson, Barbara C.

Barbara C. Jackson January 26, 1954 - May 7, 2010 After a courageous 8 year battle with cancer, Barbara passed away surrounded by close family at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE on Friday, May 7, 2010, early in the morning. She was born and raised in Millsboro and graduated from Sussex Central High School. Barbara was born to William H. Davis and the late Doris E. Mosley Davis in 1954 at Milford Hospital. On August 25, 1984 she married Daryl J. Jackson at Indian Mission United Methodist Church. Together they lovingly raised Daryl Brett Jackson, 25 and Cory E. Jackson, 23. Barbara graduated in 1975 from Salisbury University with high honors in Secondary Education. In Barbara's career, she had the opportunity to work with Jobs for Delaware Graduates, Native American Consortium in Washington DC and Baltimore, Indian River High School and lastly Sussex Central High School where she taught English for 30 years. She was an active member of the Nanticoke Indian Association, even serving as a council member and editor for the Annual Powwow book. For many years she worked diligently with the youth coordinating bible study at Indian Mission UMC and supporting the Nanticoke Indian Dance troupe. Barbara loved being with her family, spending time with friends, working with her students, laughing and playing with her beloved dog Snoopy. Despite her long battle with breast and bone cancer, her strength and courage in the face of adversity still remains an inspiration to us all. With her unwavering love for Christ, Barbara touched the lives of numerous people with her smile, generosity, laugh and loving spirit. Barbara will forever be remembered and missed by her husband of 26 years, Daryl Jackson, children Brett and Cory Jackson, father William Davis, sister Audrey Brown of Nashville, Tenn, grandmother Ella Mae Mosley of Milford, DE, mother-in-law Mary Drain, of Milllsboro. Sister-in-law: Paulette Brunswick and husband Tony of Ashburn, VA her "Chemo Posse" Sabrina and Lauren, a host of Aunts, Uncles, Nephews, Nieces, Cousins, a much anticipated grand-daughter and countless other family, friends, and students. Friends and family are invited to attend on Thursday, May 13, 2010. Calling hour will be from 6-7 PM, followed by a Memorial Service led by Pastor Jerry Denton and Rev. Cindy Quillen at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to the Nanticoke Indian Association Scholarship Fund, 27073 John J. Williams Hwy., Millsboro, DE 19966 attn: Mrs. Bonnie Hall.

Patterson, Elizabeth Ann

Elizabeth Ann Patterson, nee Carson, 87 of Mohnton, PA, formerly of Rockland Township, PA died July 29, 2010 at the home of her daughter Chrissy Gambler. She was surrounded by her loving and devoted family. "Betty" was predeceased by her beloved husband Robert "Pat" Patterson in January 2010.

Born in Darby, PA on March 13, 1923, Betty was the daughter of the late John B. Carson and Helen Louden Carson. Betty graduated from Darby High School in 1941.

In May 1942 Betty met the love of her life, Pat, on a blind date and they were married on August 4th 1942 in Wilmington, DE.

She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. Betty had a zest for life and loved the beauty of nature. She enjoyed her beautiful flower gardens and also loved watching birds which she could identify by sight and song.

Her hobbies included sewing, flower arranging, gardening, canning produce, making jelly, and reading. Betty and Pat loved the Lord and her life reflected this love through her hospitality and generosity. Their farm was the gathering place for all the family and their many friends. Pat and Betty loved traveling and camping, especially with loved ones. Acadia National Park and the seashore were their favorite places.

Betty is survived by her three daughters, Patricia Reiner of Millsboro, DE; Christine wife of Errol Gambler of Lewes, DE; Lorraine Trexler, wife of Rich Paulhamus of Mohnton, PA; and one son, Robert Patterson, Jr., husband of Lana Patterson of Cumberland House, Saskatchewan, Canada; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; and her brother Charles Carson, husband of Marilyn of Easton, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brother John B. Carson II and sister Helen Edwards; sons in law, John A. Reiner and Robert P. Trexler; and grandson Jeremy L. Trexler.

A funeral service will be held at Noon on Tuesday, August 3rd at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE. Family and friends are invited to attend the celebration of Betty's life. Visitation will be 11AM - Noon. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro, DE. Flowers are welcome or contributions may be made in Betty's memory to the Salvation Army, 301 S. 5th St., Reading, PA, 19602, (610) 373-5208.

Rossell, Steven M.

Steven M. Rossell, "Steve" Age 52, Passed away on Monday, May 31, 2010 at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, De. Steve was born on January 11, 1958 in Wilmington, De.He was the son of William and Judith Rossell of Millsboro, De with whom he lived.

He graduated from William Penn High School in New Castle, DE. He worked for many years as a painter both in New Castle County and Sussex County in the beach area. Steve was a die-hard Redskin fan staying loyal through the good and the bad seasons. He was very interested in the restoration of vintage vehicles and a big fan of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In addition Steve collected action movies. Steve was a loving person, and especially loved his family. He believed that "Families Are Forever". He was a happy man who had a very infectious laugh. Those who knew Steve could not help but like him. He was preceded in death by his sister, Diane Rossell and her son Bradley, and a niece, Diane Downward. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his daughter, Catrina, a Brother, William Rossell, Jr., Sister, Anna Roberts, and Judith McKee and her husband Kenneth, and many nieces, and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 5, 2010, at the Glebe Cemetery in New Castle, Delaware.In Lieu of Flowers, the family requests contributions to your favorite charity.

Pettyjohn, David Ralston

David Ralston Pettyjohn, age 94, of Georgetown, DE passed away on March 23, 2010 at the home of his daughter. Ralston Pettyjohn was born on June 9, 1915, to the late Golda A. Sr. and Hattie Pettyjohn. At age 12, Ralston suffered a serious foot injury in a tractor accident, and in order to receive school bus service, relocated to Lewes to live with his Aunt Nan and Uncle Willie Truitt for 5 years during his recuperation. He graduated from Lewes High School in 1933. However, despite Ralston's physical setback, he went on to become a renowned pitcher for both Lewes High School and the Sussex Bees. His love for baseball followed him for the rest of his life.

In 1938, Ralston married the former Mildred Dorey. He first worked for Parks Goodnight and Old Line Construction Co., as a heavy equipment operator. Then, he was employed at Townsend's Inc. and eventually became one of the first servicemen for the company. He also tended to his own poultry farm until his retirement from Townsend's in 1981. Following retirement, Ralston enjoyed a life of bowling, shooting pool, watching baseball and traveling. Ralston was a member of St. John's U.M.C., performing with the St. John's Quartet through the years, and he religiously attended Zoar U.M.C. in Millsboro where he was a member of the choir. He was also a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 3 and served on the Georgetown School Board of Education from 1959 - 1967. Anyone who knew Ralston knew his love of the Lord, family, and good food. But most significantly, in Ralston's senior yearbook, it states, "That for which we will remember Ralston is his calm temperament and good nature."

In addition to his parents, Ralston was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Dorey Pettyjohn in 1977; his brother Golda A Pettyjohn("Bugsy" to most, "Bud" to Ralston); and his son-in-law Norman "Buff" Taylor. He is survived by his two daughters, Gail Megee and husband Floyd and Gaye King and husband Irvin; 4 grandchildren, Lisa Steele and husband Tony, Ron Megee and wife Brigid, Don Megee and wife Tara of Georgetown, and Loriann White and husband Chris of Millsboro; 3 step-grandchildren, Michael King and wife Stephanie of Middletown, Kathy King and Dean Parker of Millsboro, and Christina Shaw and husband Andreas of Georgetown; 7 great-grandchildren, Colby Steele, Corey Jean Megee, Chelsea Megee, Chase Megee, Lake Megee, Maggie White and Kit White; 6 Step-great-grandchildren, Zachary King, Jeremy King, Shelby King, Jessica Cannon, Shannon Moore, Dustin Mitchell; 3 Step-great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, June Pettyjohn and Madelyn Dorey of Georgetown, Thelma Monroe, Leah Dorey, and Betty Jo Collins and husband Donald of Millsboro; his cousin David Truitt and wife Helen of Lewes; and many nieces and nephews. Lastly, he is survived by his devoted friend of many years, Verdie West of Dagsboro.

A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday March 28, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Watson Funeral Home 211 S. Washington St. Millsboro, Delaware where friends may call from 11 - 2. Rev. Arthur Backus and Rev. Dr. Edward Wilkins will officiate. Interment will be in St. John's UMC Cemetery, Springfield Crossroads Georgetown, Delaware.

Rowley, Laurence D.

Laurence D. Rowley, 87 of Georgetown, Delaware formerly of Centerville, Va, passed away on June 1, 2010 in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford, Delaware. Mr. Rowley was born in Birmingham, Alabama on December 29, 1922 to the late Laurence and Neva Gilmore Rowley. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II. Mr. Rowley previously worked for the Fairfax County Government in Fairfax, Virginia as a map draftsman. He retired in 1987. He loved being with his family and especially his grandchildren. He was a loving husband and father. Laurence is survived by his wife of 43 years, Edith H. Rowley; a son Elwood Rowley of Georgetown, De., son Franklin Kerns of Manassas Va., a daughter Valerie Thomas and husband Keith of Georgetown, De., son Laurence D. Rowley II of Colorado Springs, Colorado and one brother Roland Rowley of Pawleys Island Sc., 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St. Millsboro Delaware where friends may call 1 hour prior. Newman, Sr., Richard E.

Marines

Richard E. Newman, Sr., 83, of near Georgetown, Delaware passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at home. Mr. Newman was born on March 28, 1926 in Gloucester, Massachusetts to the late Paul B. and Hazel A. Publicover Newman.

He was a heavy equipment operator working with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #542, Philadelphia, PA retiring in 1988 after 27 years of service. Mr. Newman was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post #28, Oak Orchard/Riverdale near Millsboro.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years Elizabeth Chambers Newman, a son Richard E. (Sharon) Newman, Jr. of Laurel, DE, a daughter, Jodie Marie (Edward) Quinn of Middletown, DE, three step sons, Raymond F. Chambers, Jr. of Georgetown, Stephen M. (Joyce Shuster) Chambers of New Castle, DE, and Dale I. (Sherri) Chambers of Wilmington, DE, a sister Mabel E. Murray of Billirica, MA, a nephew William Newman of Magnolia, MA, seven grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. Mr. Newman was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Mae Newman in 1983 and a brother Warren L. Newman.

Services will be 11 AM, Saturday, March 6th at the Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, 2220 N DuPont HWY, New Castle, Delaware; Friends may call one hour prior the service. Interment with honors will follow service. A memorial service will be 1-3PM on Sunday, March 7th at the American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion RD, Millsboro, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers the family asks for contributions to support the American Legion Post #28, 31768 Legion RD, Millsboro, DE 19966 in memory of Richard Newman.

HOUSTON, GRACE

Grace Houston age 78, of Millsboro, Delaware passed away on October 21, 2010 at her residence surrounded by family. Grace was a retired phone operator from Christiana Hospital. She was a member of Mary Mother of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Millsboro, Indian River Yacht Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus. She loved her card club, cooking, and always enjoyed drinking good wine. Her Mother, Grace Fulton, and a brother Willis Fulton who passed in 1970 preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband George Edward Houston Jr., son Edward and wife Lisa Houston of Millsboro, Delaware, Daughters, Denise Mahoney and husband James, of Wilmington, Delaware, Anita Viola and Husband John of Newark Delaware, Kimberly Jarrell and husband James of Wilmington, Delaware and Beth Miller and husband Stephen of Millsboro, Delaware, 14 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be offered on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Mary Mother of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Rt 24 Millsboro, Delaware, at 11:00 am., burial will be private.

ESHAM, JAMES ELWOOD

James Elwood Esham age 59 of Gumboro, Delaware passed away on October 22, 2010 at his residence surrounded by his family. James owned Esham Construction for over 30 years. He loved woodworking, and cabinet making. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge 2483, and was an avid Redskins fan. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, he was a homebody. His father, Elwood James Esham, predeceased him. He is survived by his mother Betty Phillips Esham of Gumboro, Delaware, his wife Vickie Taylor Esham, 2 children, Dawn Annette Morton and husband Wayne of Delmar, De, Keith Allen Esham and wife Heather of Keedysville, Md., 1 sister Linda Cohee of Georgetown, Delaware, 4 grandchildren, Brandon, Jonathon, Emily, and Caleb. Several nieces and nephews and, numerous family and friends also survive him across Sussex County and the Eastern Shore. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Watson Funeral Home 211 S. Washington St. Millsboro, Delaware where friends may call 1 hour prior. Hall, Aldon David

Aldon D. Hall, Age 99, of Clarksville, Delaware was called home to his eternal rest on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Aldon was the son of the late James G. Hall and Beatrice (Williams) Hall, and Stepmother Maggie Rogers. Aldon was born on August 22, 1910 in Williamsville, Delaware. He was affectionately known to the community as "Pop Pop." He received his early education at Blackwater School in Clarksville, Delaware, as well as attended school in Bayard and Wilmington, Delaware. He was a hard worker and held various positions with local companies. He later went on to own his own lawn care business before retiring. Aldon was joined in holy matrimony to the late Louise V. Hall on December 28, 1936. From this 63 year union they raised eight children. They were also foster parents for the state of Delaware for over 30 years. Aldon was a longtime member of Union Wesley United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee and member of the cemetery committee. He loved the annual camp meetings and prayer bands. Aldon enjoyed gardening and hunting, and would donate the fruits of his labor to the auunual church harvest home, friends and neighbors. He loved watching and playing baseball. His favorite team was the Baltimore Orioles.

Aldon will be remembered as a quiet, hardworking, respected, wise and honest man. He was loved by all. He was preceded in death by his wife Louise V. Hall; two sons, Norman Hall and Monroe Pettyjohn; one daughter, Gwendolyn Braxton; three brothers, Leon, Elmer, and Clinton Hall. He leaves to cherish his life and loving memories three sons, Aldon S. Hall (Catherine), Kenneth Ferebee, and Lafayette Ferebee ( Victoria); three daughters, Kathleen Gibbs (Larry), Patricia Moore, Sharon Hoover ( Roger); a daughter-in-law, Doris Hall; a brother, Ernest Hall; three sisters, Agnes Coleman, Leona Hall, Lucinda White; and two sister in laws Ernestine and Evelyn Hall; nineteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and twenty five great great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 23, at 12:00 Noon, at Union Wesley United Methodist Church, Clarksville, Delaware. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in the Union Wesley United Methodist Church Cemetery. In leiu of Flowers contributions may be made to the Union Wesley United Methodist Church, 32137 Powell Farm Road, Frankford, De 19945.

Hermann Jr., Anthony J.

Anthony J. Hermann Jr. age 81, of Millsboro, Delaware passed away on April 27, 2010 at Beebe Hospital, Lewes, Delaware. Anthony was a member of Mary Mother Of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Long Neck, Delaware. He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony J. & Kathryn Kuhlman Hermann Sr. and his beloved first wife of 44 years Marion Lombardo Hermann. He is survived by his wife of 20 years Loretta Yangello Hermann of Millsboro, and his children: Jack Hermann and wife Colleen of Gallaway, New Jersey and Bill Hermann and wife Kathie of Philadelphia, Pa., 8 grand children and 7 great grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 9:00 AM at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Georgetown, Delaware where friends may call at 8:30 AM. Entombment will follow at 1:30 PM at Calvary Cemetery, 2398 State Highway 70, Cherry Hill, New Jersey. In Lieu of Flowers contributions may be made to St. Michael the Archangel - Mary Mother of Peace 202 Edward Street, Georgetown, Delaware 19947.
