Myra Coburn Castell
1924-2008
Myra Castell, 83, passed away on August 26, 2008. Myra was born on November 22, 1924 in Tampa, Florida. She was a lifelong resident of Cedar Key and a graduate of Cedar Key High School. Myra and her husband Vernon celebrated their 63rd Anniversary in April of this year.
Myra is survived by her husband Vernon Castell of Cedar Key, her daughter, LaVerne Bell of Chiefland, her son Douglas and his wife Wanda Castell of Inglis, four grandsons, Michael Bell and Ryan Bell both of Chiefland, Douglas Castell and Raymond Castell both of Inglis, eight great-grandchildren, two sisters Susie Day and Wilma Holman both of Chiefland, and one brother Tyler Coburn of Gainesville.
Myra was a member of "the greatest generation" and touched many lives. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her independence and zest for life will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to have had her in their lives.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 29, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home in Chiefland. Services to celebrate Myra`s life will be held Saturday, August 30, 2008,
10:00 a.m. in Christ Church, Cedar Key.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 2116 SW 16th Street, Gainesville, FL 32608, or Christ Church PO Box 210, Cedar Key, FL 32625.
Arrangements are under the care of Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 1310 N. Young Blvd. Chiefland, FL. 352-493-0050

Grant Aaron Richburg
Grant Aaron Richburg passed away in Chiefland on November 22, 2008. He was 44 years old. He was born January 23, 1964 in Gainesville to Kay and Gary Richburg. He was a native of Cedar Key and worked as a fisherman.
He is survived by his grandparents, Eddie Richburg and Myrl Richburg; his father, Gary Richburg; mother, Kay Richburg; daughter, Amanda Richburg; sister, Glenda Richburg; grandchildren, Joseph and Christian Kilpatrick. He was preceded in death by his brother, Nelson Eddie Richburg.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Cedar Key Cemetery. Services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Jim Wright officiating.
Arrangements are under the care of Knauff Funeral Home, Chiefland.

"Mack" McCain
1938-2008
Mack McCain, of Cedar Key, passed away on October 3, 2008 in Gainesville. He was 69. Born and raised in Cedar Key, he was the owner operator of McCain Construction in Cedar Key for many years. He also worked for Gulf State Steel as an ironworker. He was a Baptist. He enjoyed working on equipment and most of all he loved being with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma McCain and sons, James McCain (Kathy), Kenny McCain (Rose), Harold McCain and Gilbert (Mary), daughter Gayle Locke (Louie), sister Bobbie Mae Smith, stepsister Helen Berry, twelve grand children and ten great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services for M. McCain will be conducted on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the Cedar Key cemetery with the Rev. Jack Watson and Rev. Jim Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedar Key Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM at the Knauff Funeral Home in Chiefland.

Janet Hale Betts
1914-2008
Janet Hale Betts of Cedar Key entered the larger life on Friday, August 8, 2008 under the gentle and compassionate care of the staff of Haven Hospice in Chiefland, surrounded by the love of her husband, her children and their families. She was 94 years old.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was born July 24, 1914 in Cedar Key to William Henry and Ida Little Hale. She attended Cedar Key School, Gainesville High School and Florida State College for Women. After a short business career in Clearwater and with the Association of American Railroads in Washington, D.C., where she met her husband, she devoted herself to her family. She and her husband lived briefly in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Missouri and settled in suburban Washington, D.C. before returning to Cedar Key in 1977.
She was an active worker in several Episcopal churches, including St. John's, Norwood, in Bethesda, MD, and Christ Church, Cedar Key, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She was also a founding member of the Cedar Key Historical Society, which she served as treasurer for ten years.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-eight years, William F. Betts of Cedar Key; her son and daughter-in-law, Charles Hale and Patricia Kady Betts of Washington, D.C.; her daughter and son-in-law, Jane Cringan and Samuel S. Ireland of Gaithersburg, MD; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Friends will be welcome to call at the family home at any time. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, Cedar Key at noon on Saturday, August 23, 2008.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Christ Episcopal Church, Cedar Key, or Haven Hospice, Chiefland, FL. Arrangments are under the care of Knauff Funeral Home of Chiefland.

Marlene Gifford
Cedar Key resident Marlene M. Gifford died July 15th, 2008.
Marlene and her husband Walt semi-retired in Cedar Key several years ago. She was a loving wife and mother and a trusted friend to many.
She leaves her husband, Walt, and three adult children.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, July 26th at the Parish Hall of Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Key, located at the corner of 5th Street and St. Hwy. 24.
Snacks and refreshments will be provided. Family and friends are all welcome
Her family has requested that no flowers be sent to the home. Instead, those wishing to make a donation to cover the costs of her final arrangements may do so, with any remaining funds going to Haven Hospice in Chiefland.

Nancie Katherine Dale
Nancie Dale passed away peacefully May 10th, 2008. The funeral was held May 20th in Worthing, England. Survivors include Colin and Linda Dale, grandsons Peter Dale, and Patrick and Helen Dale, two great-grandsons and three great-grandaughters.
Nancie was 91 years old. Her life took her through World War II when she had the sole responsibility for bringing up her only offspring, Colin, as her husband Eric was away with the Royal Air Force for many years. One night as they were at the movies the sirens were sounded and they had to leave. Colin was very cross for having to leave the movie and when they reached home Nancie made him cheese and tomatoes on toast which cheered him up and has remained a favorite ever since. Mother and son grew very close during this time. In the many diaries she kept in almost every entry there is a mention of Colin.
Eric died in 1989 and shortly afterwards Nancie left England for the first time. She flew to Florida to visit Colin and Linda in Cedar Key where she made many friends. She was happy being near the water, watching the birds and greeting her friends every day as she made her rounds of the post office and the market. She returned to Cedar Key each winter until her health declined.
Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer`s Society.

Roy T. Sills, III
1963-2008
Roy T. Sills, III, 45, of Cedar Key passed away July 13, 2008. Born in Jacksonville, FL he has been in Cedar Key most of his life, where he was a clam farmer.
He is survived by his sons, William Timothy Sills and Joshua Pershing Sills, and daughter Shyloh Elizabeth Sills, all of Cedar Key. He is also survived by his mother, Cobina Sills, of Chiefland, father Roy Sills, Jr. of Citra, sisters Sandra Lee Sills of Roselle, IL, Donna Renee Douglas of Niceville, FL, Monica Sue Miller of Madisonville, TX, and 6 nieces and 2 nephews.
Graveside services will be Thursday, July 17 at 11:00 AM at Shiloh cemetery with Pastor Dennis Webber officiating. Visitation will be Wed. July 16 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the care of Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 1301 N. Young Blvd. Chiefland, FL 32626

Terry Ray "Red" Cole
Terry Ray "Red" Cole, 46, passed away on May 24, 2008 after a tragic accident in Chiefland.
He was born on June 21, 1961 in Niles, MI, to Raymond and Barbara Cole. He was part of the Cedar Key community for 11 years, coming here from Homestead, FL. He worked for Mack McCain Construction for 11 years, and he loved to fish.
He is survived by his father, Raymond Cole, Homestead; his mother, Barbara Peterson, Tennessee; sons Terry Ray Cole Jr. and Nicholas Cole, both of Cedar Key; and a sister, Nancy Graham, Edwardsburg, MI.
A graveside service will be held Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Cedar Key Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care of Knauff Funeral Home of Chiefland.

Donnie N. Meeks
Donnie N. Meeks, 87 of Chiefland passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on August 1, 2008. He was born Nov. 15, 1920 in Gulf Hammock and lived his entire life in Levy County.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ in Chiefland. He farmed for many years and worked for 17 years at the Levy County Road Department. He loved to hunt and fish and was a member of the Gulf Hammock Hunting Club. He enjoyed working in his garden, spending time with his family and most of all, spending time with his beloved wife, Virginia.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Virginia Sharp Meeks, of Chiefland, whom he cherished and with whom he had two children, son Jack Meeks ( Darleen), daughter Betty Eiland (Melvin), both of Chiefland; 5 grandchildren, Chuck(Rhonda) Cook, Kalyn Gay, Don (Andrea) Meeks, Lynette (Mike) Gregory, Lela (Bobby) Elmore; 10 great-grandchildren, Kyle Cook, Kasidy Cook, Keri Gay, Kendalyn Gay, Cory Meeks, Jody (Nickie) Meeks, Kristen Gregory, Kelsey Gregory, Jordan Elmore, Ethan Elmore and 1 great-great-grandchild, Landon Meeks. He was preceeded in death by 7 brothers and 3 sisters and his parents, Dave and Fannie Meeks.
Funeral services will be Tuesday August 5th, 2008 at 1 pm at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services Chapel with Pastor Chuck Cook and Brother Billy Slaughter officiating. Visitation was on Monday August 4, 2008 at the Funeral Home. Interment will be at Ellzey Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Haven Hospice of the Tri-Counties, 311 NE 9th Street Chiefland, FL. 32626.
